    I have one of these Ford LGT 165 tractors which I bought new back in 1980 c/w 2 stage snowblower, 42" mower deck, tiller, rear weight box, tire chains and chrome hubcaps. It's been a great tractor over the years and I still use it for snowblowing in winter and for tilling my garden in summer. It's had a few brackdowns over the years but nothing serious and I just fix it and still going strong. Never regretted this purchase.👍🛠

    Great review. Brought back some memories. Back in '78 I bought a new LGT 165 with a mower deck and rear tiller. The rear tiller was powered off the front of the engine with a pulley about where you put your idler pulley. Had a shaft on it that ran to the back on the left side which powered the tiller. I had it for 14 years. Went through 2 of them shafts for the tiller. It would bend and wear out the 2 bearings on the side. After the first time I could never get it to be dead straight. I thought it was straight but some where it wasn't as it kept wearing out the bearings and then the shaft would bend. It was my first garden tractor and did a ton of work for me. I ended up trading it in '92 but I don't remember the dash ever being broke at the hood latch. It was still in great shape except for the shaft for the tiller. I had to have something with a rear PTO that was more robust. Ended up trading it for a 425 John Deere where the PTO came right out of the trans. like most tractors are. Thanks for bring back memories.

    I removed the sun dried brittle plastic console and dash, used them as templates, and traced them onto aluminum. Turned out great.

    This is the family tractor that has been sitting outside in the field for the last 30 years. Nowhere near this condition but I didn't want the family tossing it because sentimental reasons. Starter motor went around 1998 and it was just left to deteriorate because we couldn't get parts for it anymore after Ford sold off their local tractor dealership and we weren't internet savy like today.
    Before this tractor, we had a much smaller Wheelhorse in the 70's but you couldn't do much towing or plowing with it because it wasn't heavy enough. We got the Ford here with the mower deck and that ran pretty well for 15 years.
    Dad replaced it with a Cub Cadet, which was a straight up Lemon as the gear shift for reverse broke within days and we made due with that until we got a John Deere front loader/mower combination in 2002. The John Deere is still running strong, the Cub Cadet, that piece of junk I broke up and sent to the town dump, pieces at a time after some scrappers took the engine, the Wheel Horse got dragged out to the curb for clean up week in the early 2000's after sitting outside for almost 20 years and turning into a solid rust lawn ornament. The blue Ford is still here.

    Great video! Very informative and accurate. I agree with your assessment of the Jacobson and Ford tractors - my brother has a Ford 120 with a hydraulic lift system that operates a 12" single plow. It could easily handle a 2-bottom plow with better traction, such as ag-lug weighted tires and/or chains. Hmm - I guess I had better get to work on that... BTW - you have a great name - Norman is mine and my dad's first name. Keep up the good work!

    Hi. I am an ''old'' subscriber here. With the help of your channel, tractors kind of became my new hobby. I just got myself a Ford LGT 165 for ''FREE''!!! Everything is on it, but the engine is ceased (at least, I think it is at first look. With all your tutorial videos, I can't wait to spend some time on it. And like you, my goal is to use it as a working tractor on my small homestead. Do you know How much these tractor (LGT 165) were sold from the dealership when new? And how much a similar tractor would sell for today when brand new in USA (or Canada where I live) ? I also bought an old Bolens 900 for $150, the engine is running very well, just need to clean the carb, and a missing connecting part for the shifter, and …. a seat! I always love these ''vintage'' tractors, and through channels like yours, now I am able to understand and work on them. I love your passion about these vinage tractors. Thank for all your videos. Keep up the good work. Good day to you all here.

    I have had a LGT 125 for a few yrs. I originally bought it to clear snow since it came with a single stage snow blower. I used it for about 2 winters, but ithe blower was pretty out of balance and really shook. I recently removed the blower from the front of the tractor and it's basically headed for scrap metal. Maybe I should have not done that? We love using this tractor around the house / our campground! It runs great, all hydrostatic and fun to drive. I still have the rear tire chains and 85 lb wheel weights. I have not removed snowblower support bracket underneath yet. I'm kind of wondering if I could use the front PTO for something else someday. One issue I have is about a half a turn of play in the steering. Looks like there are issues with the gear box. My tractor looks very much like the tractor in this video.

    Thanks for this walk around. If you have the time, I have a quick question about that Kohler K341… I also have a close sided LGT 145, and a close sided LGT165 that I bought about 6 months ago (package deal). Something I noticed is that on the LGT145, it has that ‘teardrop’ shape air cleaner cover, but on the LGT165, it does not. It’s just a round air cleaner that covers the carb, but it still has a teardrop shape backing plate. I haven’t figured what the air tube to the right of the carburetor is (when looking at the side of the tractor). What is this air passageway, and do I need to have the teardrop shaped air cleaner, or is just the round one OK?

    From Mark in Kentucky. Norman, I have a Ford 17LGT hydrostatic tractor with the KT-17 Kohler engine. If my memory serves me correctly, Gilson manufactured the tractor that I have.
    The mounting ears near the top of the transmission housing are broken off - So there is no way to keep the transmission from moving around. Does my tractor have the same Peerless transmission as the one shown in your video. The rear cast iron axle looks identical to yours in the video. My Ford has a 48inch mower deck that used to do a fine job back when the tractor was still usable. I’m not sure if the KT-17 is a series 1 or series 2. Thanks for replying to my questions about my K-241 Kohler on my 107 Cub Cadet.

    Nice to see you posting videos more regularly now. I am a new subscriber but hope to see some more builds coming up. A little off topic I know, but do you by chance have a particular favorite brand or at least era of a brand that is your favorite? I presume you have a love for many of the brands given what you do and your website but was just curious if one particular one was dear to you for one reason or another.
    Thanks

      Hey Zach, I am preparing to do more builds. With summer here, my business is super busy, and I have been using the tractors a lot to build my horse farm. So you will see more Tractor at Work Videos while the weather is nice. Next week I will be doing a video on a Root Ripper build for a Category 0 3 Point Hitch. Then in a couple of weeks, I will do a straight restoration on a 1960's Ford 120.
      My Favorite brand of Tractor is the Jacobsen Built Ford LGT's from the Mid 1970's. The best era for Garden Tractors are the Mid 1970's They were advanced, but still used all steel body parts. In the 1980's tractors were still made tough, but many companies started to use plastic in the dashboards. I am a young guy, so I don't mind plastic, but with a tractor those plastic dashes get beat up over time, and are harder to repair and make look nice.

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I have encountered this issue many times with myself and customers. 2 possibilities: fuel Pump not functioning properly, and it can no longer keep up with the fuel pumping, or your ignition coil is heating up causing too much resistance in the wiring and preventing a high voltage build up or your points are arcing too much due to a bad condenser causing no magnetic build up in the coil. Not a big deal to repair, so don't let it be a deal breaker for you. I normally replace the entire ignition system when I buy a tractor and start fresh. New wires, points, ignition coil, condenser and spark plug cable.

    Hah hah, just like mine, except newer.😉 I *almost* built a snow plow for mine back in 2009 or so, but we haven't had a significant snow storm for years here. (here being the mountains of western New Mexico). Anyway, like you were saying the hydrostatic transaxles in these are just about indestructible, as are those big 16 hp. cast iron Kohlers. The only thing I've done to mine mechanically, is replace a head gasket, fuel pump, and the ignition switch. Everything else on the tractor is pretty much bullet-proof. (besides the mower deck anyway) My 52" 3-blade deck has a bad pulley that needs replaced, but they have a 1" keyed shaft hole on a rather small 5" pulley. I have another pulley that would work if I cut the center out of the old one and weld it into the replacement pulley. I've sort of lost interest in it though since I've been pretty much disabled the last couple years.🙄

    Norman i have a question. I purchased one of these bad boys and want to use it to mow. The pto clutch is toast...i for the life of me cant find a new one or even just parts. Do you have a suggestion as to wear to look?

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suggest to test the pto first to make sure it is indeed toast. Do this with a multimeter. Take a resistance test between the wire and the body (ground) of the clutch. You want to see a small number but not 0, OL or infinity. If it is indeed bad eBay or email me and maybe I have one.

    nice tractor. you dont see many of them, i worked on a couple ford LGT's but i cannot remember the model. i think it had a K321. any K series is a fantastic engine from the little under-rated K161 to the large K341, in reality all of the koher K series are under-rated, which all of the new stuff produced today is way over-rated. i really like kohler k series and onans but i personally would not buy an onan, they cost way too much to rebuild.
    that rear end is incredibly well built. you dont see that anymore. that kind of makes me wonder, what's better in your opinion? this rear end setup or the IH cub cadet? im partial to the cub cadet rear ends..... not the newer junk but the heavy duty quality farmall cub derived engine. so what's stronger? that cub rear end is tough to beat and they almost never break. i have a 1961 cub cadet original and the rear end is 55 years old, really a heavy duty setup for a 7hp rated tractor..... lol

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrew, thanks for your comment. I agree with you on the K Series Engines. That's why we specialize in developing parts for them. Keep them going for 100 more years! From a technical standpoint the rear end configuration on the Ford LGT series is better than on the IH Cub Cadets. They dissipate heat more efficiently, have a high and low gear range, and has a planetary style differential. However, they are a pain in the butt to remove and are lighter than the Cub Cadet Rear Ends. In a small tractor, I want as much weight as I can get in the rear, and the Cub Cadet Cast Iron Rear ends are HEAVY.

      IH built cub cadet sure are tanks. i own both a farmall cub and a cub cadet. they were and are still great machines. the cub cadet brand no longer has any value. mtd makes garbage and slaps the cub cadet name on junk that's not worthy of the name cub cadet. most people have no idea that name cub cadet exists because IH took their farmall cub transmission and put it into a small frame with a single cylinder engine. hence cub cadet. i own both machines so i can tell people a little about the history and how they share the same rear end. it made for a heck of a durable setup

    Sounds like Ford is priced like Simplicity. At least on the east coast, you get WAY more tractor if it says Simplicity instead of more common brands like JD, Cub or others. Works for me.

      Joking aside. All of the old single cylinder engine powered tractors are loud. Only way to quiet them down is with ear muffs.

    • @originalCN4

      I guess with sound matting it would only increase the cost and slightly reduce the noise, if I get adventurous enough to even purchase an old subcompact tractor, I might think about it I guess

    So yes get these while they are cheap!
