I have a 416-8 that runs great. I pulled it out of a field all dry rotted out , with squirrels nests, hornet nests, etc. It had sat where it broke down about 15 years ago. Well now it is a beast. I had to re wire the whole electrical system. New tires. The tranny oil was sludge, and the twin onan engine had black oil. And the shifter was broke off. After a few weeks of work it runs great and I use it to plow down six foot high blackberry thickets in my back forty. That low gear just will not stop.

Utterly brilliant little tractor. I am keeping my late father-in-law's one going here in the UK and its wonderful for mowing the paths in the woods. Pretty beaten up, 31 years old and just new starter and ignition switch. Great South Bend Engineering!

I had a factory fresh Wheel Horse 312-8 delivered new from our local dealer . . . a few decades ago. It's been used to mow this 1/2 acre lawn without any service calls. It's been through a few batteries, of course, but other than that it hasn't needed anything. I won't admit here how infrequent the oil changes have been, but whatever I've been doing hasn't diminished its worklife at all. Great little machine!

Hello Norman, I just found this very same Wheel Horse 312-8 tractor from a fellow near me for $350.00. I plans are to restore it for use on my future retirement property. It should make for a great heavy hauler to transport fire wood out of the forested 18 acres we have. Thanks for all the video's, tips and tricks of your trade. I look forward to buying the parts I may need to restore this tractor from your company. God bless you and yours. Robert.

With the gearing that has could pull a house off the foundation lol. Really though growing up my parents had a pontoon boat a 20 footer. Think I was 14 mowing the lawn. Well the boat was in the way of mowing. I still can't believe I hooked up the little 12.5hp Craftsman my dad has and pulled the boat out of the way. I mowed put the boat back. My dad got home thought I had got the neighbor to move the boat. Told my dad nope used the tractor. He didn't believe me so I was happy to show him. Hooked it up and moved the boat so my dad could see. Moved the boat with the tractor after that until my parents got rid of it. It never harmed the tractor at all. My dad still has it to this day. He hasn't used it in the past 2 years as the carb is bad on it. Don't know why but you talking about pulling trailers with your Toro made me think of that.

I have just bought myself an almost identical Toro Wheel Horse Classic 312-8 a 1991 model with the 12.5 Hp Kohler Magnum engine. 476cc it has done just 690 Hours. I found it along with its cutting deck and a leaves collector. I intend doing a full restoration to restore its paintwork and electrics. These Wheel Horse garden tractors were built to last. The engines are so strong and the steel work lasts for years. Brilliant machines! Loved the video, looking forward to seeing more about the 312-8 and any other Wheel horse models.

Interesting engine arrangement. The transverse mount with a belt drive is simple but not as efficient or robust as a longitudinal mount with a shaft drive. Still a great video and certainly a tractor worth saving.

I have a 1993 wheel horse 314-8 we bought it brand new thing still runs has over 1000 hours on it it pulls like crazy I pull logs with mine I drew loader and backhoe plans for it to use the attachomatic system your right about it needing bigger spindles I would do the four bolt hub conversion but great tractors using a geared transmission like on the wheel horse for loader work isn't to bad if you can rev match I always use second gear or first gear so much fun these machines great vids keep Em up only thing bad about the Kohler magnum is the valve guides kinda suck at least that's what I found and my oil sentry came apart somehow and the float was chewed to hell inside my engine had to re build it anyway

My dad just brought 1 of these out to my Micro-farm.
I was taking it up to park by my other tractors, and didn't know about the 2 speed transmission.
I put it in gear, let out on therr clutch, and it did a wheelie.
Dad thought that was hilarious. He said after it happened, "Oh yeah, it has high and low for each gear". Thanks for the heads up Dad....🤣
So, warning they're light in the front end.

I have this same tractor and love it. How does the seat pan/rear fender/fenders (the metal piece that the actual seat is attached to) secure to the rest of the tractor. When I purchased mine used, they said they had damaged it and used bent metal pieces and screwed it to the console where the gear shifter is located. I'm trying to find the correct part to fix this as the metal they used is too thin.

Could you please tell me where the voltage regulator is located? That machine is exactly what mine is. Mine is the older model, 1985. The only ( major? ) thing I've had to do to my machine was with the fuel pump. It quit working. I put in a new pump but that didnt work either, so I put an electric pump on to it. Works great!! As far as the voltage regulator goes, I have an issue with at first it appears it's not charging at all, and then as it's running you can watch the voltmeter creep up to about 16 volts. So I'm thinking the regulator is not quite doing its thing very well. If you could help me out, that would be great!!

This tractor may be a little light to pull a plow through virgin soil. Depends on your soil though. When I do new plots I have to first use my backhoe or tiller then I can plow after that.

    • @daveb1081
      @daveb1081 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Gosh, that kinda stinks lol, I wish it was Syncronized for the gears and not for the ranges, so you only had to stop when your going from Low to High or vice versa! My 1995 Toro Recyler 2 has a 3 speed gear and it's not Syncro, yeah, it's a walk behind, but I absolutely love it! Super overbuilt quality, and the transmission pulls like there is no tommorow! All the hydro guys think Im wierd but whatever! Gear is defenetly the way to go for a mower, if it was a loader tractor, id say hydro! Thanks for showing me! I've always wanted one of these machines, specifically a 416-8!

  • @wendells3344

Hi, I have a 312-8 that I just purchased. It is in very good condition. When I got it the mower deck was installed and I mowed with no problems. I removed the deck then so I could go into the woods with chain saw etc.
I decided to re-install the deck and mow one more time before snow. I connected the center lever to the deck, then the one at the front of deck. Mule and belts OK. My problem is that the front of deck will not go down to ground?
The wheels on the front of deck remain up in the air? What have I done wrong? Im frustrated.
I hate to have to take it back to the dealer for this. Can anyone tell me my fix?

no this is the original engine. this tractor is a later reproduction by Toro. they called it the "Legacy" series I think. this tractor is from the early 90's.

That. Belt drive is the same as my John Deere 210 it's called a Vera drive

This drive system doesn't vary the speed of the belt like your 210. Your vari-drive has a sheave that comes in and out to lengthen or shorten the pulley ratio. It's pretty cool!

Bro, I want one so bad, being in the house with parents tho still at 17, it's a no go! The 416-8 looks like a tank! Maybe someday! Another tractor I'd like to have is a 520-8, just to say I own the largest gear machine in the 500 series!

It's limited in many aspects because, everything is belt drive. The belt drive wheel horses are good machines, but they are not brutes due to their limits of design. They are just about the best lawn tractors, but they can not compete with true garden tractors, imo.

i think they are a true garden tractor they can handle tillers and single bottom plows, which is the what sets a garden tractor apart from a lawn tractor. a so modern so called cub cadet garden tractor that has shaft drive but cant handle a single ground engaging attachment. the wheelhorse had these attachments therefore they meet the definition of garden tractor.
my point is shaft drive is not what makes or breaks a garden tractor but shaft drive has its advantages

The accessory belt drive an a small car like a Toyota Corolla can consume up to 25 hp. Few suggest that the A/C compressor, power steering and alternator of a car should be driven by a shaft. The belt drive of a Wheelhorse is no more trouble than that of a small vehicle and long term maintenance is easier than most shaft drive garden tractors. The belt drive of the Unidrive also eliminates the need for a clutch disk. That the simple belt drive is less trouble (less costly to repair) than a shaft drive is a reason that the shaft drive D series Wheelhouse is not as popular as the classic versions. That said, if you can get a hydrostatic compact tractor Kubota/ Yanmar etc, it will likely require less maintenance than a similar model with a geared transmission. The 412-8 is just a 12 hp machine, the belts are fine, you would most likely be limited by traction and light weight ( less than 700 pounds ). The 8-speed Unidrive is very strong.
