Little beefster took a lot (and gave a lot!) before it gave way. These are impressive buggers. I'm getting more and more happy about the old LGT 165 that brought me here to learn about restoring.
I love these types of videos. Your average idiot today would have junked that tractor, and bought some new piece of junk to replace an actual workhorse.
I ran the numbers for my Cub a few years back. While she is in good shape for 52 years old, she has little monitory value. The problem is that while she may be worth nothing, it would cost about 6K to replace her with something that could minimally do her job. Would my new 6K piece of junk last 52 years? I doubt it. Brakes, tires, points, spark plug wire, and head lights are just about the only things ever changed on her. I did have a valve adjustment done, but the old girls is still running on her old K241 without ever missing a beat.

On the older cub cadets I tilt the tractor and am able to drop the steering out from the bottom. It certainly can get tight with loader frames and different models. Always nice work.

A few small comments: pressure wash before repair; discuss why you didn't weld it; are new parts available for this repair (few of us have a boneyard)? Great video.

@@Isavetractors I used say this all the time until I visited Ireland. when I said it I got a funny look from my Irish friends. They explained; here we say "fools seldom differ". LOL! I loved it. Now I can't hear the "great minds..." without thinking of the Irish version.

I know that this video is 2 years old but here are a few ideas to improve the operation of the steering box. There are thrust bearing kits available on ebay that fit behind the
cam shaft nut. Removes friction from the washer behind the nut. Also, on the top of the steering column is a bushing. Replace it with a 3/4 id by 1 3/8 od flanged ball
bearing such as the ones used in the older Cub Cadet front wheels. I did this on my Cub Cadet 125 and you can now steer it with one hand. Third and I did this on my 69 JD 140 with a Johnson bucket loader on it. Replace the front tires with three rib tires. What a difference. Almost like power steering. Those turf tires just have too much footprint.

I did for a gasket kit for my ariens s16 it nice not having to fill it with oil every time I use it cause there no big oil spots on the ground but I still check it every time before starting it thank you for the parts
I've got an S-12H and could use a friend to bounce ideas off of. I just got it and there was quite a bit of metal shavings in the oil filter for the hydrostatic system.

You have inspired me to buy a few garden tractors. 1970 jacobsen chief 1000, 64 chief 800, and a Rugg carpet mini mower. Thanks and I'm hoping to restore the 1000!
Looks like it snapped right in the HAZ of the shaft. I'm betting there is a step turned right at that point in the shaft with a sharp edge that caused a stress point, then the heat from the weld added a brittle point and it flexed just enough that it went snap. A way to help that would be to replace the spherical bearing on the tractor that steering shaft goes through with a fixed bearing, that would limit the ability for the steering to use that as a lever and flex the shaft. It also looked like the front axle needs the stops adjusted under the tractor to keep it from trying to pivot as you steer.
I have a LGT 125. I mostly use my Kuboto B6100 because its got 4WD
Sure got lucky the gearbox housing itself didn't grenade, that's what happened on my Cub 1811 and ended up selling the tractor because it was going to cost more than I wanted to put in it
i have a safety switch to the brake. do you know where it is connected so that when i start i need to put the brakes down in order to start? Im cleaning up the wiring.
This was the weak link on the Ford open side LGT models. I had an lgt 165 with the pto shaft down the left side to the rear. Never could find the rear tiller for it so I sold it. 1 year later saw a rear tiller for it pop up on Craigslist 5 miles from my house. It was devastating. The guy I sold it to loves it I called him to see if I could by it back... big NO... so I told him about the tiller a d he bought it. I have a JD 318 with the 48 inch mech tiller and an Allis 712s with the 38 inch heavy tiller

You would get a fuller bucket if you stick the bucket trailer in and then curl up and then move forward slowly and raise the loader. You will get a full bucket every time.
When I work lighter materials like compost, manure, or mulch I do that. But for this stone dust gravel, half buckets was the limit. A full bucket of heavy aggregate is too heavy for this.
Maybe you could put a hole further up on the steering pivot to make it put less stress on the steering gear
I know this is an older video, but I was wondering about a tractor part that I saw in the background, it looked like the front grill for a Satoh tractor (Beaver or Buck?). Is that what I saw? Also, do you still have it and are you willing to part with it?
Narrower tires would help it. Throw some f2 3's on it.

I just re-watched this video from a year ago and I work on mine as well as a few friends tractors from time to time. You're very talented there Mr Norman and a pleasure to watch repair things.
I started to degrease and pressure wash / blow-dry with an electric leaf blower before disassembly outside on a concrete pad to keep myself and my shop a whole bunch cleaner and even more important My Wife a lot happier by not getting my clothes so dirty with grease and messing up her washer & dryer!.....Food for Thought....Happily married almost 50 years.
The fix is you turn the wheels only while you are moving . on to the repair .

No that wasn't broke. It just has the free floating steering wheel mod.😂

My open sided LGT145 has lots of play in the steering wheel can I adjust it , it turns about 1/4 turn before the wheels move ???
You can adjust it by turning the steering cam in more, however your play is likely caused by that and loose joints along the steering mechanism. Tighten it all up to tighten your steering.
I have questions, I have one and the stator is bad so is it rebuildable or do they make replacements?

I like the hydro pedal controlls better on this one. This is my favorite tractor and is used the most.

It's a poor design to much leverage on them. They should have put Hydraulic steering on them. I've fixed mine 3 times in 2 years. And it's not even my main mower
