    It is so nice to see a lady changing brake pads, because it really is quite an easy thing to do, as long as the rust/corrosion has not 'seized' anything on the brakes themselves. I am a guy and I do my pad replacement myself all the time. The only problem is that it's DIRTY, and if you live in areas where they apply salt to melt the ice/snow on the roads, then after 7 to 10 years the sliders on the calipers tend to SEIZE solid if you don't regularly re-lubricate the slider pins. And even if you do that, rust just generally eats away all everything, so after about 10 years everything is just a rusty flaky mess.
    That's about the time you either start to replace the rotor and drums and calipers too, or just go get a new car, because at that time probably a ton of things are ready to let go on the engine side of things too. Things like alternator, radiator, etc.
    Replace your car with a NEW CAR once your car has reached the 14 year limit and/or 300,000 mile limit. Remember that things that need to be replaced on a car start to rise exponentially after 10 years, due to AGE of the materials themselves. For example; the rubber dust boots/bellows on Toyota struts start to just disintegrate after only 10 years. Imagine what else is going on in other areas of the car. :
    So If your car hits the 10 year mark and it does not have 300,000 mile on it yet, subtract 25,000 miles of 'LIFE' for every year over that 10 year limit. That gives you an idea of how much longer you can safely keep your car going. So at 11 years, that mileage limit would now be 275,000 miles . And at 12 years that limit would now be only 250,000 miles (that's where my car will be next year, and that's when I will be replacing my car with a NEW Corolla). 13 years = 225,000 miles. 14 years = 200,000 miles. After 14 years just sell the car no matter what as parts will start to disintegrate no matter what. Once past 14 years it is cheaper to buy new than to try to keep the old car running.

      Interesting formula. I agree that even if you don't drive the vehicle, the rubber seals disintegrate and cost a small fortune to replace. Scotty Kilmer recommends using a spray bottle to spray all accessible rubber bushings, seals, etc. with a liberal amount of AT-205 Re-seal to extend the life. I felt like it was worth a shot and followed his advice. Time will tell if it works.

    Very good video. Thanks for demonstrating that you CAN do most vehicle maintenance tasks yourself. I liked that you showed to use the old break pad to compress the cylinder. I've seen several videos where they compress the cylinder without protection. A couple of things that I would recommend.
    First, if your going to do your own maintenance, invest in a set of proper wheel chucks and jack stands. This is infinitely safer then the jack that comes with the vehicle. The small investment could save your life and the expense will be recouped with the first brake job you do yourself instead of paying someone else.
    Second, remove the master cylinder cap after the car is jacked up so that you can compress the caliper piston with less resistance and pressure on the break line. Years ago, I popped a break line because I tried to compress the cylinder too fast with the cap on the master cylinder which caused excessive pressure in the line. Granted, it could have been a weak line, but it was no fun changing the line anyway.
    Third, Disposable nitrite gloves go a long way in keeping the grime out of your fingernails.

    Great video but you really should use jack stands when working under or around a raised vehicle especially use a junk factory jack.Also if you remove the cap on your brake reservoir the piston goes in easier.

    Yes the nuts were loosened before the car was jacked up. The wheels don't spin anyway because this is an automatic front wheel drive car. But it's never a good idea to rely on the transmission to stop the wheel from spinning. Thanks for your comment!!

  • @robertgreenfield9690
    @robertgreenfield9690 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. You should mention that on some cars, like VWs, the pistons can't be pushed straight in. A tool that rotates the piston while it's being pushed is required. Also, it's a good idea to clean and relube the pins and guide bushings.

      Yes yes yes. I use my jack in a jiffy too. She also needs safety googles, lab apron, heavy duty chemical resistant gloves, a safety buddy, bottle of water for hydration, knee protectors to prevent abrasion from kneeling..... I doubt a sedan on 3 wheels will tip over the 4th side.

    • @bradmckenzie-smith7994
      @bradmckenzie-smith7994 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is about the most idiotic thing I have seen anyone reply!!! If the wheels were square you might be right but instead of looking down her top in the video, look at the wheels, they are round. Sudden movement of the car for some reason (yes even with handbrake on) the jack can still dislodge itself and the rotor come down crushing her leg. How about that splatter from the brake cleaner, as far as I am aware, all brake cleaners are a hydrocarbon based solvent, not really something you want on your skin or in your eyes

  • @starcar1980

    Excellent job, girl! One tip, removing some brake fluid from the brake master cylinder can help when compressing the piston back into the caliper. Brake fluid rises as you’re compressing the brake piston. On my Hyundai Elantra, I had to use a special brake piston compression tool for the rear brake calipers. Maybe you can go more in depth on servicing the brake system, including changing out the brake rotors??

    Well I was thinking you doing my break. You look better then my mechanic

  • @everythingdiy
    @everythingdiy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    No you do not. You only need to bleed your brake fluid every 30-40,000 miles. You can look at your brake fluids color to best determine if you need a change. Usually if your fluid is dark that means you're due for a swap. However, if your fluid is still light it should be safe for driving. But as best practice you should get into the habit of changing your fluid every 30,000 miles (not matter the color) to ensure maximum braking performance. Thanks for the comment!

  • @everythingdiy
    @everythingdiy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Noise depends on a few factors. Type of brake pads, rotor condition and caliper age. Usually what causes the most noise would be the type of brake pad you used in your application. Typically most people purchase semi metallic or organic brake pads. While they are cheap they are noisy. The best brake pads for those who are concerned with noise are ceramic. They are quiet break pads that have virtually no noise. You cars age and rotor condition can also be causing some noise.What year is your car?

    are you gonna make some DIY restorations? like paint, dents or other maintenance stuffs? your car is prolly too new for those tho.

    so my 2002 mitsubishi lancer needs front brake pads and probably rotors.. if i bring the rotors and pads to my mechanic he will do it for $100.. but then i had this crazy idea to do this myself... how hard can it be? you make this look super easy but i am worried it will not go so easily for me...
