Very true. It also helps mechanics refresh things and confirm the proper way. There is the right way, fast way, and wrong way to do things. Yet the secret to mechanics. The fast way is the wrong way. This video can also help you prove that if you take your car to a shop. Then get home. You can check to see if they in fact worked on your car and did it "Right". I personally wouldn't Want to work a mechanic job and be told to do it wrong.
I thought it was a hard job too! There is literally only like 7-8 bolts, including the tire bolts. I thought it was an impossible job for me to do, and then I look up videos out of curiosity and was surprised.

@ChrisFix I want to say so much more, but after my dad passed away last year I lost my rock for everything automotive related. I knew basics, but having my dad to rely upon when I wanted to work on a vehicle just gave me so much peace. A few months ago I donated a kidney to a friend and have been out of work for awhile. Things started happening to my vehicles and I didn't want to lose money to a mechanic. I was still dealing with not being able to pick up the phone and call my dad for help, so I turned to your channel. I needed to fix a tie rod and my brakes. Your videos gave me so much help, and most importantly....peace of mind, to fix the problems on my own. I may not have my dad any more to call upon, but thank you for your videos because rest assured that I am not the only one missing their dad when help is needed and you have filled that void 💯

@@jeffersonnava5265 Jiffy Lube charges 200$ per wheel. Includes rotors, pads, etc. so its over 800$ for all 4 wheels. They're by far the cheapest I've found near me so brakes are NOT CHEAP to get done. Glad I learned how to start changing my own though

This is definitely one skill that I have learned from Chris over the past 5 years. A few extra minutes of prep goes a long way. A lot of my friends actually think I’m really organized when in reality I just mimic what I see here on this channel.

Funny tho, I did it and my brakes failed and had an accident lol, Just kidding but sure I had trouble doing it, my brake discs and brake pads were not giving space to the caliper to close right, so I had to waste a little bit the pads and that did the job

My dad can fix basically everything. Thing is he doesn't want to learn me for some reason. It's so fucking annoying when he offers to repair something for me, then I ask him to only fix it when I'm around because I can learn a thing or 2 from it. Then I used to come back from school or whatever and he fixed it alone. Now I'm starting my masters in mechanical engineering in 1 year with just enough knowledge to change a lightbulb.
The thing is, he said his father wasn't handy and therefore had to do everything himself. I kinda feel like he wants me to learn everything myself instead of him teaching me because that's the way he learned it. Can't blame the old fella. Still have a 1982 rusty Honda cm450. When I finish my engineering masters I want to make a café racer from it.

Did you see the frame before the black-paint suspension? Chris had all the parts sanded down to bare metal. I didn’t see swirl marks either. Wonder what grit sandpaper he ended up for last stage.

Hey Chris. I've been watching you and your car repair video for years and I'm happy to report that I've recently replaced the brakes and rotors on my '09 Honda Fit, following your video. This is my third vehicle and with each DIY project I do, my car becomes less intimidating and I feel more confident about trying my own car repairs.
I grew up with my mother and sister and my father wasn't in my life to teach me about this stuff (and he's a car guy). Now I'm married with 3 kids of my own and I hope to be able to pass down what I'm learning about cars to them as well. Starting with how to change your Blinker Fluid. 😉

Hey Chris, just wanted to let you know, today was the first day I really worked on my car, I replaced my oil, changed my filters, and replaced the front brake pads. I went to a garage where you can rent a stand by the hour, as I lack the handtools at home, and I was done in just under two hours. I watched this video several times, and thanks to this was not really surprised by anything I encountered. Keep the good, work up, I think I just got inpired to undertake more work on my car. There's a lot of ripoff channels on youtube that lie and give bad if not dangerous advice, this is NOT one of them. I retired from GM, I have worked on cars ,trucks and motorcycles since I was 10 and this is the best channel for auto repairs available. I retired in 2006 so I have to stay on top of anything new like the no-fill transmissions (which you have already covered in another video) if I want to continue doing my own repairs! Thank you for an awesome channel, keep up the good work! And for anyone that may be wondering if this channel is legit, everything Chris is doing is first class, top notch exactly as it should be done, YOU CAN TRUST THE ADVICE HE IS GIVING!

* Medium Strength Thread-locker
1:45 - Parts
* Brake Pads (Ceramic is preferred)
* Rotors (Regular Blank are preferred over Drilled and Slotted ones for regular city drive)
2:10 - Overview
2:30 - Lifting the Car Safely
4:16 - Removing old Breaks Pads and Calliper
5:38 - Don't damage your brake line! Do not hang the Calliper by the break-lines.
6:25 - Removing Brake Rotor
6:53 - Remove Rust from the Hub Surface
* Use Eye protection and Mask
7:53 - Remove the oil film from the new Brake Rotor and install it
8:30 - Installing Calliper. Make sure to clean it carefully with a paper towel.
10:00 - Different tool for cross-shape Calliper.
10:36 - Lubricating Brake system with COPPER anti-seized. (NOT typical silver/graphite anti-seize)
11:30 - Changes gloves, or wash your hands.
12:00 - Put SILICON past on the Calliper guide pin.
* DO NOT use anti-seized or Petroleum based lubricant. They degrade the rubber.
13:45 - When done everything. Turn on the car and pump the brake a few times.

Very good overview. Don't forget to check brake fluid level before compressing the brake piston. This will avoid a possible over flow of fluid. The new thicker pads will take up space. 😊
Man,you’re a lifesaver. I saved $450.00. All I had to pay was $50.00 for the break pads and $7.00 for the 19mm socket. Thanks bro.
Please note, if you are replacing all 4 rotors at once: your front and back rotors are usually different sizes and you don't want to get them mixed up. Confirm the proper size of rotor with the old one when you swap them.

I am not a car person, but after watching a bunch of brake pad replacement videos this one gave me the confidence to believe I could do it. And I did. Replaced the brake pads in our 2006 Jeep. Of all the guides I've watched, this one is definitely the best.
Hey Chris, I just replaced my front brake rotors and pads. Also needed to pull apart one of the calipers to restore the pistons and seals. Followed it up with a brake fluid bleed and change, and an oil and oil filter change. Thanks to your videos, none of this was a hassle, the only hard part was breaking those bolts holding on to brake calipers! The money I saved was more than enough to buy a beautiful set of tools and still come out in front. Better than the saving of money was the satisfaction that I could accomplish something most people would not dare to attempt. I even had a five year old helping out with handing me tools, pumping the brake pedal during the brake bleed, and learning how brakes work along the way. I can’t express enough how appreciative I am that you generously share your knowledge and confidence in your videos. Cheers!

I just finished doing my rear brakes on a 2010 Forester because a mechanic quoted me $1,600 to replace all my brakes and a caliper. I've spent $110 in parts so to finish my rear brakes and rotors. You are a lifesaver!

I've done my own brakes for years. Wanted to watch this to see if there's anything added that I don't do. But I noticed one thing Chris didn't do that helps out a lot. Before resetting the caliper piston, take off the cap to the brake fluid reservoir to ease the resistance of the pressure in the brake lines. You can pop a brake line with little added pressure and makes resetting the piston much easier.
Thanks for the tip! If you pop a brake line, that brake line was going bad.

@@rashidredwan8139 oh boy. No bueno! Mainly because my Chev Cruze had a rusted bolt on the rotor. Once I got it off, I found a really bad crack on the wheel hub and that’s above my pay grade. So I made an appointment and just had a mechanic do all of it. Just got it back yesterday and it’s riding smooth now! Otherwise I’ve taken the pads off enough to inspect recently that I feel very confident doing it in the future.

I almost never comment on TH-cam videos, but really felt the need to do so here. This video saved me roughly $1000. Dealership told me I needed all new pads and rotors and quoted $1100, and in addition there was a stripped wheel stud which is apparently an additional $400 in labor, bringing the dealership total to almost $1500. I bought all new rotors and pads, a floor jack, replacement wheel studs, and a caliper tool for around $500 total. The best part is now I know how to do it for my wife's car, which will probably be close to another $1000 saved. You have a unique set of technical skills coupled with great presentation abilities. Please never stop doing what you're doing!

Dan iel since you are a technician could you tell me why I have a yellow key icon on my 07 Nissan Altima . It won't start at all I tried jump starting it and replacing the battery on the remote and I even tried hitting the steering control unit with a hammer and still nothing . What's wrong with the car?

I can't thank you enough @ChrisFix I've never attempted fixing anything on my car besides changing the windscreen wipers. But yesterday I changed my rear brake pads!! I was told a while ago they needed replacing, at a cost of $700 - $800. After watching this vid (many many times) I was determined to try it myself. I'll be honest, I was totally nervous but your pep talk directed to newbies at the start of this video became my mantra. All up the brake pads were $62 and after buying everything else I needed my total cost was about $130. I now have enough anti-seize to last me a life-time and the confidence to also do my front brakes too. Thanks again Chris, all the way from Australia :)

Barnea Florin it’s most likely a dealership that tries to overcharge for simple tasks because that is where they make most of their money at on repairs
@@fbarnea Nothing special, a Toyota Camry. The quote was so high I'm assuming, to cover labour costs. The pads aren't anywhere near that.

This is by far one of the most useful videos ever posted on TH-cam. I used this video as a guide to successfully change out all of the pads and rotors on my 2012 Nissan Altima this past week. The shop quoted me at over $600 to do this for me, I was able to do it for under $300. Now I have new skills, new tools and greater confidence. Thanks for the great videos, Chris!
So I've never done any repairs to any car ever. The breaks on my wife's truck went crazy last week. Watched this video and took everything apart..a few hours later I had the front rotors, calipers and brake pads replaced. This guy made it so easy!

I broke the screw of the caliber and it stay inside so i have to but a new part hahaha

You don't need replacing your rotors, bringing them to O'Reilly for turning rotors.

before you buy a bunch of tools find the car person in your neighborhood and see if you can work there and borrow some tools.. also handy if you ask questions... i am older and have helped newer mechanics many times... plus I have the floor jacks and many tools in case things come up. glad your working on your own car. women can be awesome mechanics.

@@Sticky_Ricky Did mine today and, though I gotta reinspect the fluid system, the hardware was super easy. Only thing that made it take more than a few hours was a stripped, over torqued lug nut that would not come off. Wasn't rusty or anything, just overdone by the tire company.
I remember watching this video when it first came out. 4 years later I finally decided to replace the brakes and rotors myself today. This video was great. I had extremely limited knowledge on how to do any kind of auto maintenance let alone any motivation for it. Fast forward to today and i have done brake jobs, suspension work, exhaust repair, spark plugs, gaskets you name it. It all started from viewing your content.

chris thank you, i convinced my local salvage yard to let me take a pair of rotors and pads off of a salvage charger for my own, and i replaced them all on my own because of this video!

I replaced the front rotors and brakes (after flushing the brake fluid using your video & your one person bleeder bottle) on my 2015 Kia Sorento this weekend by following this guide. I had a strong, knowledgeable friend help me jack up the car and place the jack stands, "break" a couple stubborn bolts, and knock the old rotors loose, but I did the rest myself. Thank you for the excellent guide!
