      ChrisFix Hi Chris, I'm a big fan of your channel! I love the videos! I wanted to ask about our 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The brakes lock up out of nowhere sometimes and I was wondering what I should do to prevent this from happening again? Any kind of cleaning or lubricating tips? Thank you!

    Another reason they could be making noise is you have the wrong application break pads on your car. For instance the more expensive performance break pads are often designed for racing, so they are made to stop better at a high temperature you would encounter when you take your car on the track, but in day to day driving your breaks don't get that hot and the performance break pads make noise. Normal break pads are designed for a lower temperature and won't make noise at the lower tempratures

    Another source of squeaks especially on mtn bike disc brakes is the pad type. Downhill mtn bike pads squeak until they're warmed up and then they're great. Other pads won't squeak, but will even boil silicone DOT5 brake fluid causing brake fade when they're hot doing downhill.

      Dot5 has the highest boiling point, both wet and dry, compared any other DOT certified fluid though. Around 500F dry and 360F wet.
      Mineral OIl will not fade on you though. Build a 'cool can' for your downtube, removes that problem in a heartbeat.

    • @foreigncareater
      @foreigncareater 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't know much about mountain bikes but I do know breaks Do they make a break caliper with ceramic pistons in them? Some car brands use ceramic pistons to keep fluid temp low. Break fade happens when the surface of the pad is the same as the rotor. Reason they make slotted rotors to help cool. If you are doing a lot of downhill and you still get break fade and own a Dremel tool get creative and groove your pads then see what happens. Remember you are thinking about trying to fet surface temp down but not losing friction area also. Good Luck !

    A really good practice that not a lot of people follow, would be performing some routine preventative maintenance to your brakes at each oil change/tire rotation. When I change my oil I also rotate my tires, as well as open up each brake caliper to clean any rust that’s built up anywhere, clean the hub, and apply all fresh grease. No matter how resistant and durable grease is, it’s not durable enough to last the entire duration of the life of the brake pads, which is what can lead to premature wear caused by pads not releasing when they should. A little routine preventive maintenance saves a lot of money and maximizes the life you’ll get out of your brakes

    • @sultanofsick
      @sultanofsick ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dunno, I just replaced my brakes at 90k miles and the caliper pens seemed to still be moving pretty much just as free before I cleaned and re-applied grease. Not saying a little preventative isn't a good idea, but EVERY tire rotation pulling the brakes apart seems a bit excessive.
      Also to my great surprise the fluid still looked pretty much the same as new when I started to flush (also the first time in 90k, unless the dealer did it for free without telling me *snort), so maybe Mazda just makes some really kickass brake systems.

    • @theodoreclay2213
      @theodoreclay2213 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sultanofsick Mazda does make good products. It might be overkill for me to be greasing them up every 7500 miles or so, but I only started doing that after a couple back to back sets of prematurely worn pads, and a set of warped rotors. If I was paying a mechanic $89.95 per hour to service my brakes, then absolutely no way I would service them that frequently. But doing it on my own which only cost me an hour of my free time and the cost of grease, hell yeah it’s worth it for the peace of mind. I personally just try not to cheap out, take shortcuts, or skimp out on brakes, wheels and tires. Flirting with death at that point in my humble opinion

    • @theodoreclay2213
      @theodoreclay2213 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sultanofsick lol at least you rolled up your sleeves and did it. Invest in a good jack, a $50 battery impact gun on Amazon, and set out all your tools ahead of time like Chris does in these videos, and it’ll go faster and faster each time. Having all the right tools for the job and of course not having to fight with seized up bolts and rusted rotors will speed it up as well. Some cars are designed well and the brake work goes fast, others are designed like crap and it makes everything a fight to perform any work. I did a brake job for a friend, and what was supposed to just be a brake flush ended up turning into a trip to auto zone at 7pm before they closed to get a caliper due to the bleeder screw being cross threaded from the last idiot to work on it. Once that valve is stripped out like that, your caliper is toast. No way to know it was cross threaded and just jammed up on it until you loosen it and see that it won’t retighten. The profanity coming out of my mouth was on point at that moment

Eventually, the rotor wore down as you see it, and the backing plate wore down so much it was able to exit the caliper bracket through the gap between it and the rotor. The caliper piston then contacted the exposed cooling vanes of the rotor. The piston got so hot and mangled from that, it melted the dust boot and square cut seal. He tried to save money on a simple pad and rotor brake job, and ended up paying for pads, rotors, 2 front calipers, and a brake fluid exchange. Some people's kids man...
