Restoring my Royal Enfield Bullet 500 - Part 3

  • I take off the timing cover, remove all of the gears from the inner case and remove the distributor. The timing pinion was a bit tricky. I then clean up the timing cover and lap the oil pumps. The right side of the bike is now ready to drop the crankcase. I go step by step, so you can see the entire process and use this as a reference for your own bike. #royalenfield #motorcycle #losangeles #motorcyclerestoration #motorcyclelife

    The cardboard box idea is brilliant!!

    Flat slotted screws are a good idea,SOME people over tighten fixings when they have socket heads,it’s easy to put more torque through socket heads,the soft alloy doesn’t need much torque, good series you’re presenting 👍🏻

      Thanks for watching! And that’s a good point

    I really like your video's - I have a 1995 350 that I rode back from India to the UK on in 1997. It's been sitting in my garage in Belgium for 20 years or more. I'm inspired by your video's to get it on the road again...thanks...

    These videos are great.. Its Christmas eve, I'm sitting on the sofa with a very large whisky having a super time watching this.. Iv a 2002 500 bullet which I love. The only trouble she ever gave me was she broke the kick-start Shaft and destroyed the gear box casing but it was a cheap and easy fix so iv long forgave her🏁🏁🏁

      Thanks for watching! On the sofa with a large whisky is the way to do it 👍. These bikes are moody and high maintenance, but always worth it!

    I'm planning to install a heavier crankshaft in my classic 350, your videos are giving me the courage I am lacking to get hands on my bike's engine. Gracias!

      I’m very happy to hear that. And thanks for watching!

    I'm currently having the same struggle with the crankshaft pinion. Thanks for sharing...👍

      Thanks for watching! And yeah, those are definitely notorious. Just grind down some small pullers

    You can use a piece of folded denim to jam up those idler gears instead of a screwdriver. Much less likely to damage the teeth.

      @Cyclingwithgasoline  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I wasn’t thrilled using the screwdriver, but I used the square side of the bit instead of the blade, and the bolt on the distributor gear wasn’t super tight, so all is well

    Great presentation. I wouldn't never have the guts to do a restoration like this - you make it look so easy.

    It's come to this: there's nothing I'd rather do than watch you dismantle an obscure Indian motorcycle!

    Continuing to enjoy the strip down and your detail step by step approach. The lighting and photography are excellent. I was surprised that I couldn't see any dowels to position the timing case to the engine case, maybe it just relies on the timing gear spindles to position everything? Looking forward to the next episode :)

    • @Cyclingwithgasoline
      @Cyclingwithgasoline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate that and thanks for watching! And the timing case is a very old school design

    • @twostroke350
      @twostroke350 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The two cam and two idler gear spindles are an interference fit in the crankcase and a sliding fit in the timing cover. Once it's slid down over those, there's no axial movement at all, they are effectively big fat dowels. You would ideally plastiguage and shim the clearance between the cam and timing cover because there is a lot of variation in gasket thickness, it can actually lock the engine up solid when tightened down if the gasket is too thin/shims are too thick.

    • @Cyclingwithgasoline
      @Cyclingwithgasoline  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@twostroke350 Yeah, it seems recent gaskets are thinner than stock. I know some people who literally double up on gaskets to avoid that problem. I’ll assess and make a decision when I’m ready to reassemble. And thanks for watching!

    Remember me ? The forever Classic 500 owner. It just arrived today and O boy I loved it. You're the 2nd person I am telling after my parents. Man you inspired me through that review. And a big one. I found about a rare Royal Enfield which is shooting up value! The Super Meteor 700cc. I don't know if it's available there. But I would love a review of you riding that beast if possible. Thanks again for the content. Love from Gujarat India 🇮🇳 ❤

      Thanks again for watching and enjoy your Classic 500. I’ve never seen that Super Meteor, but would definitely review it if I could!

    Originally I had mine (Bullet 2005) EXACTLY just like yours when you started including the BRG (British Racing Green) color. At the beginning of the linked video there are some pictures of how it looks right now - you can skip the part of a ride that follows for you can hear the engine but you can not see the bike. My way if rebuilding the bike was somewhat different. Anyway, I am attaching the link as it may give you some ideas. Cheers.
