    Another awesome video. There is something Zen-like in watching you methodically taking this bike apart. It reminds me of the acclaimed novel "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".

    Another great tutorial bruv! I've came to a conclusion that patience will be your best friend during such overhauls. Best wishes from India.

    Amazing content!!! You have no idea how many home mechanics you will be helping out with these videos for years to come. I hope your channel grows and I think it will if you keep putting out gold like this!
    Now if you could only do an ironhead complete restore series after this one :)

      @Cyclingwithgasoline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks and yes, I hope this helps garage mechanics with their iron barrels! And I'd like to get an old ironhead sportster for a total restore. That could definitely be in the future.

      @@Cyclingwithgasoline cant wait! they shouldnt be too expensive in the US right? Here in Aus an ironhead in decent shape can be very expensive, around 15k AUD.

      @@slash502 Yeah, not too bad in the US. Around $4,000 or so for a good restoration candidate

    Thank you for making these videos. I'm sure it takes a lot of time and effort to film and edit. On top of the rebuild itself. I enjoy watching the progress and your narration, its informative and relaxing. Thank you.

      Thanks, I really appreciate that! It does take a lot of time to film, but I enjoy it and hope this series can help others with their bikes

    Well done and big Thumb's Up! By now, most of the latter-day electric start bikes have probably been "de-spragmatized" and their quirky grenading starters long since kicked into the neighbor's hedges. Yet this will serve as a handy guide for those only now getting around to it. I didn't need that special clutch-holding tool. Most folks just jam a piece of wood or something between the primary drive chain and clutch housing to keep it from rotating. Also, if memory serves, my '05 Bullet may have had some sort of locking tab washer doodad on either the clutch or rotor where one bent over the tab to help hold the retaining nut that yours lacked...probably lost by a previous owner who'd gone in there. So, I'd suggest consulting those Hitchcocks' parts diagrams before the rebuild. I'd have tried to save that stator intact with its wiring "for later." You never know. But then again, in my heart of hearts, I know it just would have just ended up in that pile of old steamship valves, radio tubes, and broken 8-Track cassettes I keep for no good reason. But carry on! I'm really enjoying your rebuild series, and fully appreciate your taking the time to document every step so well, mindful of the fact that it adds at least 8½ additional levels of bothersomeness doing so.

      Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment! I think these sprag clutches have a 100% failure rate. Very flawed design. The holding tool was cheap and convenient, so I picked it up. I did use the ratchet extension as well for the rotor bolt 😂. As far as locking tabs and retaining clips, etc., this was actually complete. Both the clutch and alternator were aftermarket from a previous owner at one point, so it’s little different than stock. That’s why I’m replacing a lot of these parts - I want to know exactly what’s in there when I’m done. I’m thinking 5, 10 even 20 years out. And I honestly can’t be bothered with saving a lot of stuff I’m not using. I have too many parts from other bikes already. And this isn’t a vintage BSA or Norton Manx. Trying to sell most of it would just get drowned in shipping costs alone. Although I do have a local buyer for the clutch assembly.

    Thank you for the video. When I was watching I realized that soon I will be changing the drive shaft sprocket in my bike, the one being held in place with this large screw nut that I will have to undo to remove it. I would love to get a proper tool (like offset box wrench) before starting the work but I have no idea what size it should be. If you had a chance and did not mind measuring it I would be able to order it ahead of time. Thank you.

    Excellent!! Another great video and I've answered a question I put to you regarding the timing side case. For some reason, I hadn't noticed, previously, that the timing/idler gears turn on their spindles which are stationary. Wrongly, I assumed they were like the gears on my old BSA A65 which were fixed to their spindles then the spindles ran in bushes which were pressed into the removable timing case and crankcase which meant the timing case needed locating dowels to position it correctly. I now see that the gear spindles, on the RE, are also the locating dowels for the timing case ........ pretty neat :) Don't you just love engineering? ;)

    • @Cyclingwithgasoline
      @Cyclingwithgasoline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it’s kind of amazing how different bikes can be, but that’s the cool thing about independent engineering (everything turns freely on these spindles). Thanks again for watching!

      @@Cyclingwithgasoline Looking forward to Part 5 but I had a thought. Since you're ditching the electric starter motor, why don't you use the space for a counter balance shaft ....... now that would be a bit different :)
