If you disregard the star, it is the rank of Sergeant First Class in the Army. It is 3 chevrons and 2 rockers. That is the rank I was when I retired from the Army 9 months ago. As Dylan said, if it had a 3rd rocker, it would be the rank of a Sergeant Major.
They're Sargent stripes Trog. I forget what three on top and two bottom are. I think 3 and one bottom is Sgt. First class. Three top. Three bottom is Master Sgt. Aren't there 3 and 3 on the Epiphone?

Finally the video I've been waiting for lol. Funny story,back in 2015 when I saw the music video to Wash It All Away by Five Finger Death Punch and saw that Jason was playing a red version of this guitar. I told my brother about it and he immediately knew it was a Gibson Explorer and he told me they stopped making Gibson Explorers completely and for a while,I believe him until last year lol. By then I actually started playing guitar ,pretty terribly I might add lol. And I wanted one of the red ones,which hadn't been announced yet,until my birthday last year. So big thanks to Epiphone for that birthday gift lol. If all goes to plan, I'll have mine by the time my birthday comes around this year. It'll make me so happy because I've literally wanted that guitar for 4 years now. Can't wait to order it

All of the other signature models were gorgeous. The Jason Hook model is just trying too hard to be cool, but I guess that makes sense considering he's in the 5 finger death punches.
I think it’s extremely tacky. If you want to get a military themed instrument, the government series is far more tasteful. And all that Jason Hook branding just comes off as egotistical.

It wouldn't be awful if it didnt have that plastic tubing. I can stand the military graphic. It's not as horrible as some of the graphics I see on dean guitars. But that tubing makes this a completely impractical instrument. Its ugly and in the way

Supposed to be a US Army Chevron ( I think) on the front but I don’t believe it’s historically correct nor currently correct. With only 2 rockers under the Sgt stripes it’s Denotes a Sgt First class. But with a star in the middle it would represent a Sgt Major but it then would require a third rocker. So it’s more theme - ish rather than correct. I like ebony and rosewoods as much as the next guy but there is nothing wrong with granadillio. It’s a beautiful Central American hardwood. Have it on my 2018 Explorer and it’s great. I like it a lot. No reason to really stick your nose up at it. I’d probably make a plate to replace the conduit as well. Ok my 2cents is in.....

Hey just to let you know, the stripes are actually a rank in the US Army. The E grade is E-7 ,Sergeant First Class, SFC, Platoon Sergeant. I served 27yrs in the US Army, as to how I know.
That conduit thing is a deal breaker ....Good for Epi to drop it . No baby pic for this one ? LOve the JB and 59 pick up combo ... Yes indeed. Had a PRS SE Tremonti, loved it great guitar. Now I have an Epiphone Tommy Thayer and it is great. So, I think sometimes they throw some great appointments on signature stuff, even if the endorsee's are jackoff's.
I think a cool idea would be to get a white Explorer pickguard and have an experience painter match the two rockers. The pickguard would cover the ugly conduit and star, making the insignia a Sergeant Major.
The star could also be part of a rank insignia. You have 3 stripes or some people call them cheverons, then 2 rockers but normally there would be a third rocker. The star in the middle would indicate the Army rank of a Sergeant Major. I really think because of the 3 stripes/chevrons and the 2 rockers and then the placement of the star being in the middle between the stripes/cheverons and the rockers they were looking for it to look like a military rank. It would be the Sergeant Major rank sitting sideways and just one rocker short. But I think it's one rocker short because there just wasn't enough room for the 3rd rocker. If you take the base of the guitar and move it clockwise to the right until it is vertical it's easier to see it as a rank. The more I look at it the more I am convinced this is the look they were going for.
I like the fact that it has super jumbo fret. I play mainly an ibanez rg 550 and an EVH Wolfgang standard both of which have jumbo frets, they are bigger on the rg but not by much I think the rg has 6150 frets and the EVH has 6105. jumbo frets have spoiled me and I'm definitely having them put on my 1980 gibson 335s custom firebrand asap.
I had a '18 LE Les Paul Special Double Cut that had granadillo fretboard on it. Didn't bother me that it wasnt rosewood. Felt just like rosewood. Only sold the guitar because I want a more 50s spec Double Cutaway.

Well, what bothers me a lot - could you make sure the tubing was UNDER the plastic under the 3-way togle before shooting the vid? It looks kinda cooler that way. And, well, about the thing getting in the way - normally for some professional work and especially in heavy music your hand just stays on the bridge - it's not supposed to go all the way down to hit the tubing
I think the graphics really put people off as the Epiphones haven't been super popular either. When they first launched they were selling for £759 (not sure what that is in dollars) but they kept dropping the price. Last I checked they were sitting at £455 and they've only just started to sell. Its a shame because the extended cutaway and the top arm bevel make it look pretty unique as far as explorers go, the graphics seem to be a real turn off. Still, for £450 you could always just sand the top down and paint what you want haha.

I like everything but the paint job and the lack of a pick guard, but those can be changed for about 300-600 unless you refin. Yourself then probably about 70-85 dollars and some elbow grease

I honestly thought the plastic tubing was a coiled cable that the switch wires ran through. Never seen it up close. What it actually is is so much worse, and I wasn't exactly attracted to it when I thought it was a coiled cable.
That insignia is for the Marines, sort of lol. The Marines Sergeant Major insignia looks just like that accept it has 4 down stripes (chevron) instead of the 3 the guitar has. I actually think this guitar looks cool and I have determined that watching your channel has opened my eyes to the fact that I, Ron just Ron, am an odd duck lol. It seems that most of the time I don't like the "popular" and yet I am not flashy at all which is why I would probably never buy a guitar that looks like this one and yet I do like it lol. When I bought my new Gretsch 5420 last year I almost got it in black but nahh just one time let me go a bit flashy so I ordered it in the Gretsch Orange lol. I even went so far as to buy a nice Orange strap for it lol. I love the comfort cut!! It gives the body a little more style, IMO. I get why they with the SD's but for me, if I am ordering a Gibson I want ALL Gibson electronics. Now about that conduit, I love it but I wouldn't want it lol. After you pointed out how it can get in the way of your strumming hand, nahh not for me, but I still think it looks cool! They should have either routed the wire channel deeper so the conduit sits flush or went with a smaller in diameter conduit. If it were me I would get some plexi glass and cut out the shape of the necessary cover plate for that area and I would only use half the conduit. Push the wiring in,lay the half conduit over top so it covers the wires and looks like a complete piece, then put the clear plexi glass cover on it.Now you can still see it but it would be smooth as you roll your hand over it.
It would be okay if you completely sanded off the front, refinished it and put a blank truss rod cover on it. And screw on a pickguard. Thanks for making a video about a guitar that many of your viewers would never know anything about otherwise!

Shoulder stops because of the contour of the body and would look even worse than it already does with that big green flap on the symmetry of the shoulder. It's just a bad decision in design. You interested in doing a signature T and maybe a real 59 and 60 burst in the future. Got a bunch of other cool guitar pieces for you to pick from too. I just like your channel and would do anything for a nice 1985 custom. Please know I'm very serious about this one.

Grenadilla is another name for african blackwood. It feels similar to ebony. It is used widely on woodwind instruments (mainly clarinets).
Fun fact,the guitar has LED lights that shoots across the stadium,plus it looks great
The first Hook signature guitar was made in Winchester, KY @ RS Guitarworks. Then Jason took the design to Gibson and mass produced it.

I had a 2012 Gibson SG with exactely the same reddish fingerboard, but it was called 'baked maple'.

Ffdp gives out those little cases with the picks at their concerts, same case but with their album on it. Threw me off when I saw you show it lol

I honestly thought the plastic tubing was a coiled cable that the switch wires ran through. Never seen it up close. What it actually is is so much worse, and I wasn't exactly attracted to it when I thought it was a coiled cable.

That black conduit is awful!
That insignia is for the Marines, sort of lol. The Marines Sergeant Major insignia looks just like that accept it has 4 down stripes (chevron) instead of the 3 the guitar has.
I actually think this guitar looks cool and I have determined that watching your channel has opened my eyes to the fact that I, Ron just Ron, am an odd duck lol. It seems that most of the time I don't like the "popular" and yet I am not flashy at all which is why I would probably never buy a guitar that looks like this one and yet I do like it lol. When I bought my new Gretsch 5420 last year I almost got it in black but nahh just one time let me go a bit flashy so I ordered it in the Gretsch Orange lol. I even went so far as to buy a nice Orange strap for it lol.
I love the comfort cut!! It gives the body a little more style, IMO. I get why they with the SD's but for me, if I am ordering a Gibson I want ALL Gibson electronics. Now about that conduit, I love it but I wouldn't want it lol. After you pointed out how it can get in the way of your strumming hand, nahh not for me, but I still think it looks cool! They should have either routed the wire channel deeper so the conduit sits flush or went with a smaller in diameter conduit. If it were me I would get some plexi glass and cut out the shape of the necessary cover plate for that area and I would only use half the conduit. Push the wiring in,lay the half conduit over top so it covers the wires and looks like a complete piece, then put the clear plexi glass cover on it.Now you can still see it but it would be smooth as you roll your hand over it.
E9 has 3 chevrons and 4 rockers in the Marines. That same rank is 3 chevrons and 3 rockers in the Army. It's closer to the Army.

It would be okay if you completely sanded off the front, refinished it and put a blank truss rod cover on it. And screw on a pickguard.

Explorers are my absolute favorite guitars, and I hate this thing.

Shoulder stops because of the contour of the body and would look even worse than it already does with that big green flap on the symmetry of the shoulder. It's just a bad decision in design. You interested in doing a signature T and maybe a real 59 and 60 burst in the future. Got a bunch of other cool guitar pieces for you to pick from too. I just like your channel and would do anything for a nice 1985 custom. Please know I'm very serious about this one.

I don't usually say or even think this, but that was a terrible playing demo. We just need you trogly, run it through something high gain like it should, and play some hard rock on it. Because that's the audience of people who are gonna buy this thing. Other than that great vid as always, but sheesh Jason hook gets a bad enough rap, don't add to it lol

No disrespect for Jason, but that tube looks horrible, what´s wrong with pickguards? Could have requested a rusty one to go with the motif or keep the epiphone look, no pickguard, this is "too customized"

The black wire thing looks like.... How do you put this nicely. Ummm Breaking Bad.... They probably took it out of the epiphone because somone probably has to put that garbage in their by hand. Would have been cooler if they used a big orange extension cord on the front instead. At least that would be less likely to wear out in ten minutes. Have you ever bit down hard on one of those chucky cheese straws? No way that crap is gonna hold up over time.
