Well, as a metal head, everyone of this riffs had its particular reference, all of the guitarist were pretty good, but the one that I enjoyed the most was the last one, you nailed it
Chris Buck remind me of southern/stoner/sludge metal. Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Bongzilla, Fu Manchu. Thick guitar tone, slow melody. Music to chill and think about important stuff going around and observe the world. And Mick Taylor just rip my heart off with vibes of old school new wave of British heavy metal. I (if I say so myself) have the voice to give it the heavy prog vocal (but not nearly the guitar chops) it deserves. Call me!! Kudos, my man. Everybody's stuff was good. Great. But the harmonizing on top of the rhythmic stops and general badassery took the prize here. I can't wait to see where that goes.
Chris' solo has the most wicked tone played with a little something that you can't quite name except you want more... Paul's was def my favorite, had the most surprises rhythmically and melodically, as well as more atypical melody to the genre with up to three harmonies I think? My new ringtone!

Mick: This one is thrashy/groovy too. Wanted more tho. Paul: Prog as it gets. Loved the constant beat change, but never missing the groove. This was a cool experiment, learned a lot today.
As someone who does appreciate metal, I can say all this was ranging from good to totally awesome. I really appreciated Mick with his slayer-esque in between step thingies and his performing attitude :). Paul himself stole the show for me, the complex rhythm changes getting you on the wrong foot is something I enjoy from recent and current bands. @@mysticmagicsmurfdarklord6844 I think it really depends on your taste and what you've grown up too. Personally I wouldn't put f.e. Black Sabbath in the Metal Genre but I can definitely see, why people might do so.
@@perryborn2777 here's the thing... like all forms of music, if it's not in your heart, it's like a child who mimics the action of a parent. the actions might be close, or even correct by accepted standards. however, they aren't real. all of those guys are talented. in their chosen genre, they obviously excel. i don't knock their efforts at all. music won't move people if it's not created by the movement of the artists heart. it has to be genuine. as cool as all these guys are, none of them are metal heads. this was an exercise for them.
Dunno why, but that first song makes me think of a cross between Primus and Black Sabbath. Also, interesting to see that while not all guitarists seem to enjoy metal (HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??!??), everyone kind of accepts Sabbath😄🤘🏻
As a metal head, Sammy G and Paul delivered the best riffage. But Mick’s solo? Unreal. So impressed. He would sound right at home on a great metal song with the emotional bends and shred chops like that.
Chris Buck had genuinely the greatest solos I've heard in a very long time. Given I dont listen to Metal as much as I used to but the skill is Sooo there.
As a lifelong Metal fan, I do have to congratulate everyone for going outside their norm. I really enjoyed hearing the thought processes behind the riffs, though to me they felt more hard rock than metal. I really like Justin's take- the groove had me thinking of Pantera and the dissonant bend at the start felt very Slayer.
Really liked this! Personally: Justin came in so hard with that riff ... clear winner for me. Mick was like the love child of Pantera and Helmet :) Awesome.
This video was even cooler than I expected. I thought it would be re-interpreting famous metal riffs in a non-meta style. The creativity on display here and technical discussions are indeed inspiring.
To me, Justin captured the most "authentic" metal vibe. Sammy was most adventurous, and his track is very cool. Chris wasn't metal enough, but played the best song and solo, and is the song I'd like to hear completed most. David created the most modern sounding metal track, and it's genius in its own right. Mick pedalshow host won the most respect from me for getting the drums right for metal, and for adapting what he knows so well. (...I would have liked to have seen Tim Pierce in on this.)
That's the problem saying "metal". Do you mean the first days of 70's innovators like Sabbath, the 80's Maiden/Priest era, 90's metal genres, 00's nu metal or today's pig farmer's metal?
Isn’t it funny when you see interviews with metal performers and they are the friendliest people on the planet. Very inspired playing and refreshing when it comes from a different angle. Loved it

Chris track was sick as well, if he could stretch it to about an hour I think it'd be on par with Dopesmoker.
I wish grunge weren't dead lol
i recently had a grunge rock video marathon watching session on youtube.
@@MindsDozer been on that train for about 7 years now 😅😂
As a Metalhead i approve all of your riffs, but one stood out.. Justin's riff was amazing it really felt like a real actual metal song.
Anyone else noticed that during the Chris Buck solo, he snapped the low E string from the saddle in and even with that it sounded great. What a guitarist…
Yea saw it, kinda didnt realize that's what it was 👁️👁️
It happens... That's Gibson bridges for ya 😂
Yeah, I did a double take on that for sure.
Well, as a metal head, everyone of this riffs had its particular reference, all of the guitarist were pretty good, but the one that I enjoyed the most was the last one, you nailed it
Paul, dude, your take on that one was EPIC. As a rock-prog fan I can heavily dig it. Those rhythmic displacements man... AWESOME JOB.
His riff needs to be made into a song immediately
Exactly !
Tank, Girlschool, Tigers of Pan Tang, Saxon, Angel Witch. Man, that's beautiful
Imagine if Chris Buck soloed over Paul’s track? My heavens!
Oooohhhh! That would be a killer combo! I would love to hear that.
that's a GREAT GREAT idea! they should do it!!!
MAKE THIS HAPPEN
Chris rocked so hard that his low E string came off the bridge saddle. Honestly a first for me!!
Your not a guitarist maybe 🤪
@@HctudYT I am, just haven't experienced that or witnessed that before on the low E string. Could just be a dodgy saddle on the bridge perhaps.
@@HctudYT stop
@@ROAMZ101 Happened to me before. Some fixed bridges don't hold up very well.
I've had it come off the nut because i restringed it like a beginner... because i was a beginner... but never the bridge! that's crazy
Metal is a sensation, a spirit - Chris Buck got it in one. I'd buy his track.
His solo gave me huge Opeth vibes, when they covered Bridge of sighs. The solo on there has a very similar feel, with these amazing bends
He is an exceptional musician
@@muenchhausenmusic That song is the original almost note for note, not knocking it but it sounds as though you haven't heard the original version.
@@neilsherer1766 I have, only one year ago I realized that this was a cover. I listened to the original and liked it a lot. Actually, I was pretty blown away by how this guy, whom I had never heard of before made such great music. I forgot his name. I remember listening to the album that Bridge of sighs is off and also liked it
@@muenchhausenmusic Robin Trower
Very heavy bluesy stuff for everyone, but Paul, you MUST finish the whole tune, I love the melodic part of it and clearly the progressive metal nuance is all there!
Amazing stuff, great video again!
Have to say I agree 🤘🔥
Paul: "There's a little metal inside all of us"
Iron in our blood: "YEAHHHH!!"
Calcium too! It's so metal it explodes if exposed to air, moisture or false metal

@@JK-xp7pg they’ve had a few Metal tracks on their recent album KW and on some old ones. When they play live they’ll do metal renditions of the Mictotonal songs

ok
paul, your riff is a masterpiece.
the harmonies you've created gave me goosebumps
i'm going to learn it immediatly
Paul - should you finish? YES!!!!!. THat riff is one of the most badass thing I've heard in ages. PLEASE follow it up and see where it goes.
Chris Buck sounds like Chris Buck no matter what lol. His signature play style is undeniable.
Best compliment EVER for any artist!!!!!!! (I also agree with you 100%)
How about the 20 second melodic contest paul had? Chris has a very fine touch
Mr. Buck is by far my favorite guitar player on TH-cam. It's definitely a compliment.
@@AnthonyChhan i honestly don’t know how he hasn’t joined a legit band yet his style would be HUGE like the bends he does are crazier than most of the stuff that’s on the air and it sounds better
@@AnthonyChhan like for all i know that’s just not his thing but good god that man needs a contract from a studio with full creative control he could probably get a song in top 100 in sales with his playing alone
All of you nailed it, man.
Justin: Very stoner and groovy. I liked it.
Samurai: So Thrashy. This is the one I liked the most.
Chris: What a face-melting solo. Want more.
Mick: This one is thrashy/groovy too. Wanted more tho.
Paul: Prog as it gets. Loved the constant beat change, but never missing the groove.
This was a cool experiment, learned a lot today.
Samurai seemed so unsure, but I think he actually excelled at this.
Hopefully he will release a full song from it.
extra point for Chris for knocking that low E string out of its saddle
Notice that too...
Yeah, and then keeping on at it like it didn't matter. Which, apparently, it didn't lol!
Everyone put a ton of work into these and the result shows!
For me Samurai Guitarists riff sounded the most metal of them all (and it sounded fucking sick - great stuff). The rest was more rock or prog rock than metal.
I personally disagree, I think they were all metal, but okay
Yes the samurai and paul was the most metal the other was like rock or something betwen
His riff was sick!
I thought the different styles of rock infusion made the riffs much more metal in the sense of expanding on what metal can be.
@@mysticmagicsmurfdarklord6844 I think it really depends on your taste and what you've grown up too. Personally I wouldn't put f.e. Black Sabbath in the Metal Genre but I can definitely see, why people might do so.
I can't believe there's not more love here for what SammyG gave us.. that was terrific!
imo he had the metalest one. but even though everyone did cool stuff, none of them truly "get" it.
His stood out the most to me tbh
My favorite riff was his
@@cheezyridr Idk man, I think Chris got it pretty well
@@perryborn2777 here's the thing... like all forms of music, if it's not in your heart, it's like a child who mimics the action of a parent. the actions might be close, or even correct by accepted standards. however, they aren't real. all of those guys are talented. in their chosen genre, they obviously excel. i don't knock their efforts at all. music won't move people if it's not created by the movement of the artists heart. it has to be genuine. as cool as all these guys are, none of them are metal heads. this was an exercise for them.
Paul listening to Chris shred a monstrous powerful metal solo:
*Sips from tiny cup while smiling*
2 years on, and I still revisit this to hear Chris and Justin’s submissions.
Paul’s was the best out of all of them lol.. he even chose Progressive as the metal subgenre as a bonus. Amazing!!
Dunno why, but that first song makes me think of a cross between Primus and Black Sabbath.
Also, interesting to see that while not all guitarists seem to enjoy metal (HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??!??), everyone kind of accepts Sabbath😄🤘🏻
i was thinking the same thing! using the sg and everything its crazy how sabbath really is the foundation for modern metal music
Absolutely, I thought the same thing regarding the first song
I was hearing melvins x primus
I would love to hear their revision with Judas Priest's Painkiller as the source material. It simply has everything the metal genre has to offer.
Was thinking Songs for the Deaf QOTSA myself! He nailed it though, I didn't expect that
Chris: “how would Tony Iommi play this?”
My Brain: “without fingertips”
😂😂
And left handed lol
and no fucking feedback of the strings.
HAHAHA!!! That was awesome.
Same 😄
As a metal head, Sammy G and Paul delivered the best riffage.
But Mick’s solo? Unreal. So impressed. He would sound right at home on a great metal song with the emotional bends and shred chops like that.
Chris Buck had genuinely the greatest solos I've heard in a very long time. Given I dont listen to Metal as much as I used to but the skill is Sooo there.
it sounded like srvs metal submission
The Chris Buck solo was absolutely disgusting oh my god. Would love to hear a full version
Have you notice his last string... It jumped...

@@RONALD-mr6ov Yes! @9:00 minutes LOL! Awsome!
Agree 100% though Sammy G was getting there.
Justin sounds nothing like hard rock though.
@@EbonyPope fair enough. That's just the kind of vibe I was getting, not a hard definition. What would you say it's closer to?
Did anyone else notice Chris Buck freakin pop his low E string out of the bridge during his solo?? That was intense
Chris simply landed a fenomenous and unexpected guitar solo with that tasty bends at the end... Just beautiful.
Chris Buck needs to start a fucking metal band, and I need to find a microtonal guitar. That Samurai riff was sick.
Really liked this!
Personally: Justin came in so hard with that riff ... clear winner for me.
Mick was like the love child of Pantera and Helmet :) Awesome.
Love the Samurai addition. Also, Paul's effort sounded very much like Metalocalypse/Brendon Small. Dig it.
Justin’s is so fucking cool, I would never expect him to play something like that
yeah man, i want a full song out of it
So good! Reminds me of Gravity Storm by Steve Vai with those nasty bends
With due respect for others, I'll go with Justin, too.
Metalhead of 25+ years here and Justin's slayed. He gets it. It was heavy af.
dude! if he doesn't make something out of it, one of us will have to!!!
DUDE! How these guys aren’t “metal” is beyond me. The challenge is opening a little door in their minds. Awesome.🤘🏻
Paul, if you, Samurai Guitarist and Chris Buck released a metal album, I would 100% buy a copy.
I feel like Chris's definitely had a Zack Wylde era Ozzy / Black Label Society vibe to it.
Chris sounded like early sabbath / 90s stoner metal
chris sounded a ton like early sabbath, fucking loved his riff
Justin still had hard rock all over it, but yes was most metal sounding. Subjective i guess for each listener
That's the problem saying "metal". Do you mean the first days of 70's innovators like Sabbath, the 80's Maiden/Priest era, 90's metal genres, 00's nu metal or today's pig farmer's metal?
Absolutely heard Geezer Butler’s influence as Chris Buck’s riff began.
Face: melted. Makes me want to see Joey Landreth join The Sword.
As a bass player I love that the uke bass has the biggest sound.
yeah ... that´s really nice
Isn’t it funny when you see interviews with metal performers and they are the friendliest people on the planet.
Very inspired playing and refreshing when it comes from a different angle.
Loved it
Justin's is so swampy - utterly awesome - need to see where that can go. And Paul - your riff is joyful - Sci Fi - and could be so interesting if developed fully.
Agree!! 100.
I came back to watch Paul again...that needs to be a full track.
Justin's definitely got a a solid sound with a groove to it. My favorite out of all of them.
@@LifelinkTV Agreed, in terms of the riff I actually liked the most.....Justin totally wins.
They all did a solid job, but Justin killed it.
I love how it almost has an Alice in Chains feel to it....given the slightly bluesy feel mixed with the semi-tone dissonance and bent low notes. Very Jerry Cantrell at times....
With a dirtier sound and slow pace it would be a very interesting base for a stoner/doom track.
Dudes!!! Paul that was killer!!! I'm a pinky-challenged guitarist. I have played metal most of my life. That was both educational and entertaining!! Thank you all so much!!!🎶

If the idea were riffs, then Justin takes the win here! Great great riff. I would want to hear the rest of that song for sure. Chris did an amazing solo ( I'm sure he even does them while getting his tea ready or something, that is how good he is...) as always. Samurai did something that I am still trying to understand. And that makes me want more! Very very cool. Mick went cliche and Paul all prog. Nice job everyone, but Justin just nailed it here!
Paul’s was the best. OMG it was so technically sound. Also enjoyed Chris. It’s amazing how his touch is always there. You can always tell it’s him playing.
Chris Buck is a god damned genius. He’s probably one of the best guitar players of all time. He’s not just a guitar player, his music comes straight from his soul. Such a monster musician.
Yeah, he's really great at solos and is without doubt my second favorite TH-cam guitarist. My favorite being David Simpson, feel free to check him you might like his stuff (listen to the intro piece of "how I relic my guitars", so much atmosphere and feeling in his playing). Chris bucks has the solo, David the atmosphere (he good at solos too) would love a collaboration between those two to be honest.
