I had to play Times 2x on your Video because I was watching another Tatum video, also I always think whenever I see your thumbnail I always feel they remind me of some Call of Duty or Modern Warfare thumbnail video.
Shane didn't even just try to invalidate the Challenge as it was on going. He actually tried to invalidate it before it was even known about it or accepted. Callum spoke on it a couple different times.

And if you think about it both Shane and DSP operate somewhat on the same level: They tell you to believe in what they're providing you with and expect you to fork over money, constantly negate criticisms and concerns of their fanbases, remove voices or belittle anyone with an opinion that goes against theirs, and believe groups of people outside their communities will be the bringers of their downfalls and not of their own shortcomings.
I'd say, anyone who says the challenge wasn't met has personal stakes in Earth 2. Those who double down now deserve to lose their money.

No self-respecting "CEO" of any company would challenge a youtuber, or anyone else to anything. They have nothing to prove. Callum (nor anyone in the "Shadow Council") are selling anything, so even if they lose the challenge, they have very little to lose. But what happens when they actually step up to the challenge? You lose big, and that is what happened. This really is just as you said, a big dumpster fire.
there are actually good ways to do this like many games creating lore and with company staff or even the ceo challenging youtubers to find and explain the story but doing it to a critic to discredit there critscm is really a dumb idea even if they cant do it makes you the actual dev seem really chilldish.

The fact that they changed the rules mid challenge imo makes Callum win automatically. He agreed to a challenge under specific rules and they tried to change them partway in to make him lose which means they should default imo. Even if Callum hadn't done what he did he should still win imo because he played by the rules while shane decided to try to twist them and throw random accusation out.
The funny thing about the alleged help tmk was that the accusation came before work had even been started.
They should honor the original challenge. Having regrets after you make a bet is on you, not the person you made the bet with.
Moving the goalposts is the coward's go-to. The fact that Callum managed to do it despite the dirty and underhanded change is by and large a David and Goliath story that deserves universal praise and acclaim.
I said somewhere that this was like kids fighting about whose mother makes best food. Game engines are filled with tools enough so that you could say that they are the mother who make the food for other mothers.
The other thing to remember is, the E2 devlog was meant to show what 'the team' has been doing for MONTHS. To then flip his lid and challenge Callum to do it in a week, was never going to work for Shane. He can claim whatever he likes but this young guy met or came close on every goal and did it for free in his spare time. No matter what, that makes the E2 team look like a bunch of hacks at best.
Shane is quite literally begging people to realize his grift is precisely what KiraTV has described it as for months-- not a take the money and run rugpull, just a bunch of yokels drawing a salary for doing the bare minimum until the money runs out.
You can't really warn people against investing in Earth 2 at this point. Some people will refuse to accept everything's burning until they're engulfed in flames.

Some people are insanely dumb... I know people who have been rugged by an NFT project only to buy into another NFT project by the team that just rugged them and they still think they're the smart ones backing these projects... Despite getting rugged by the exact same team at least three times so far. Some people will refuse to accept everything is burning around them to the death.

I don't know the exact prices of the cyrpto currency used to buy NFT's, but I got the rough idea that you would have to spend 1000s of dollars at a time for a single NFT.

Edit: Shane's talking out of his ass about a 1:1 recreation of Earth. The continents of Earth 2 do not shift position. The continents are constantly in a state of movement, but it takes millions of years for something noticeable to happen. Ice and water rising and dissipating isn't the only thing that happens on Earth, Shane!
It also looks like he attached the location of water to bump map of his earth, As somebody living in the Netherlands I'm about to see a major bug coming.

Then there's roads, are they going to have roads in Earth 2? they're always changing. There's no way you can keep Earth 2 up to date, which is why footage always shows rural locations, trees and grass. Sure, you can use algorithmic cleverness to make structures from aerial photography, they did it in the recent Microsoft Flight Simulator. It was okay for flying over less populated areas, but it won't work when you're supposed to be walking around and immersed in a city.

This is hilarious. Not only did he clearly win on a technical level, but he did so as a lone party with a fraction of the time E2 has had time and staff for. The fact that a lone guy could produce that in less than two weeks should genuinely make everyone who has ever dumped money into E2 consider their legal options at this point.

The real question is, did Earth 2 waste a ton of resources making their "proprietary" tech that could easily be replicated with simple plugins, OR did E2 use the same or similar plugins and Shane is upset that he got called out on it?

Callum has demonstrated he's a reasonably good programmer, meaning a simple shader graph plugin wouldn't take him all that long to produce.
Sebastian Lague, a different programmer that does videos talking about tech and demoing things in Unity, actually made something pretty similar in Unity already too (unrelated to E2 stuff or the challenge), I bring it up only because it's another demonstration of a single person going beyond what E2 has managed.
Both answers there are troubling for Earth 2 since it's something they should have revved a loooong time ago and been much further along in general development. It could, and should, have been the basis of their whole tile concept instead of their meaningless map database that they will now have to develop a pipeline to translate the tile ownership data into whatever they make in Unreal.
This is going to end up like that Flat Earth video where a guy challenged people to 100 grand if they could prove the earth was round but changed the bet's rules every time someone actually proved it.
It's a kind of religious mindset, there is a challenge in the Quran that if anyone can create a sura( verse ) like one found in the Quran then the Quran is false. But there is no qualifying meat on the bones of what "like " entails , so it's arbitrary what the criteria of success is, and so also arbitrary why any attempt would be deemed a failure..The Quran also goes onto say that it is impossible to create such a verse. Now the only judges are Muslims , and they believe the Quran , so they must believe such a feat is impossible because the Quran says it is, and if they even consider a verse meets the goal that means they are unbelievers and will burn in hell fire. So the challenge is laid out , and the Muslim is obligated to say fail to any attempt at it, it's not really a sincere challenge at all .
This is funny but none of it really matters. Anyone willing to invest in a project like earth 2 already has their brain turned off and won't change their attitude based on this happening

I have been programming games for about 12 years now, in a bunch of different engines.. And i have to say, even IF Callum did not beat the challenge, he is still 100% correct. What was shown in the Earth 2 showcase video is something someone could do in a day or two. At least the technical part of it.. Now, making this playable, and an actual good game, thats another story..

The thing is I think what this dude did is actually BETTER than the tech showed in the E2 flythrough video.
Because to me the E2 video looks like a texture, and that means the likely case is this video is Adobe Substance Designer material.

To explain, substance designer uses math to degenerate complex textures even in realtime, it's used in some modern games for stuff like generating puddles in rain and other occasional dynamic elements. But those outputs are always texture.
You don't need "proprietary" technology for a tech demo like this, cause it doesn't show an actual game. And the reason it doesn't show an actual game is cause the closer you get to the ground the more apparent the resolution becomes. Note how nowhere in the video (as far as I've seen shown here) do actual trees appear. Note the water above all, looks very flat without depth. Thats not real water, it's a floor that's painted like water. You couldn't even show waves on that.
In comparison, the demo this guy made looks like an actual functional game, it has an actual real water surface with depth. It uses an apparent shader to adjust the snow, there's visible plants. This is an actual functional demo you could build a game with.
I think the E2 videos are connecting two disconnected videos, the asset flip "playable" demo showed, and the fly through are not the same "game".

I am a UE5 Indie Developer and I gotta say, Earth 2s marketing video is nothing but boring stuff you can find in most basic UE4 and UE5 engines. Just knowing how to create a landscape texture blend is enough to debunk half of this. Not to mention, E2 didn't even bother implementing "cell bombing" or "tile mixing". You just see a ton of tiles all over the place with repetitive textures. To the normal person, E2 looks great but to everyone else, it looks like baseline crap.
E2 is not impressive and the CEO is a lying nutjob that needs to be sued into oblivion for his deceptive practices.
Please point me to an indie UE5 game with these dynamic fractal effects. I haven't seen anything this impressive with this much visual fidelity. Here's what another UE5 developer said.
"Challengers outcome is not even close. You can not seriously look at the two side by side and claim they are similar. Furthermore, saying "pretty good for just a week", doesn't fly with me, because Callum claimed it could be done in 30 minutes.
And no, I don't like Earth 2, am not interested in it, at all.
Callums terrain is clearly noise based, not parametric fractal. His mountains are smooth, showing no water channeling or tectonic stress. No amount of "aesthtic tweaking" could match Earth2's, because callum is using perlin or (in my case) simplex noise. Callum would need a lot more time to reproduce what Earth 2 has done, and he would need to restart from the ground up using parametric fractals, not perlin noise.
Callum's water does not come cloase to Earth2's. (look at it and tell me it is the same!) When the water level rises, it's just a plane (or fog) rising. The shoreline colors and biomes of the map do not change like Earth2's does.
Earth2 deserves some respect for their Terrain Generator. I would be happy to have one like it in my game! (However, the snow system of theirs lacks compared to mine, IMHO, and their biome system also appear to just be fractal normalization, and not using actual weather / heat /moisture simulations like I am attempting) but the mountains and shore lines are gorgeous.
Earth 2's generator appears to have a bit of a problem with reproducing flatlands. It is quite a challenge to do so with what appears to be their parametric fractal modeling. The world is not just mountains and sea, as beautiful as it may look from a glance. Their snow is poor. Note the ridge loses snow slower than the valleys, everywhere. While this would be the case in vegetated valleys, in high mountain valleys, the snow collects in the lower areas and the ridges melt first, but in niether case, does the snow stick to the ridges. They still have a lot more work to do. (my snow has the same problem)."

@@briankennedy3038 No, Callum said one of its feature - the "metallicness" of the objects - could be done in 30 minutes. Which he did, because it's very easy to do in two of the commonly used game/3D engines available. Callum also doesn't have to reproduce the same quality that E2 had in its demo, he has to fulfil the initial requirements stated by Shane.
Either way you look at it, Shane should not have offered this challenge to Callum, and - for E2's value to be anywhere near what they claim - Callum should not have been able to get as far as he did in just one week. This is egg on the face of Shane and E2's dev team - hey, for all I know, it's not their fault, but their CEO bragged about them publicly, so they get tarred with the same brush. For all I know, E2s super-duper proprietary stuff is mega-awesome and definitely worth all the money Shane has put into it; but that's not evident after this showing. Don't brag about your stuff then get huffy when someone asks why it's so impressive - if it really is as awesome as you say it is, you should be happy to show it off to people (put in a "not a final product" banner on it, or whatever).
By acting in this way, it just seems so tacky and small of Shane and E2. A good-spirited challenge would've been fine - "hey, if you think you're hot shit, do it yourself in a week, man!" - and if Shane had said "man, that's pretty cool for a week - not as good as our stuff, sure, but damn, kudos!" and paid out, he would have gotten cred for it, and could have shown himself to be a better person (and probably gotten acknowledgment from the "shadow cabal" too). This is just sad.

@@briankennedy3038 So the challenge was to use heightmap data stored on the drive. This data has to come from somewhere. Shane stated they were showing a geographical location, which tells me they were using real elevation data. Callum is using Perlin noise to create the elevation data, because he asked Shane for the real data and didnt get an answer. If Callum had the data his version would look VERY similiar (apart from the shaders). Also its clearly visible that E2 is using standard Perlin noise to create the biomes.

A CEO of a company with a team of devs was just showed up by a single youtuber is sad. Shane should either pay Callum a huge salary and let him build this sheate show or just fire his whole team. I have some understanding of how procedural generation works and I even made a blender add on that makes very detailed planets. I'm sure I could make something like Earth 2 very easily given enough time. It really isn't that impressive.

Seriously, though, do those mountain ranges look convincing to *anyone*? I mean sure they're definitely using SRTM data as a base map, but all of the high-res parts are just variations on Perlin noise! Most of those ridges are recognizably fractal absolute value Perlin, and making it look super-HD like that is really just such a wee extra rendering step that I almost feel like pulling a Callum Upton myself on this ridiculous project :D

The idea that the dev didn't complete the challenge because Shane said that he didn't complete "challenge 5" is a pretty laughable thing to nit-pick.
Getting height maps from real maps is very easy, and very easy to put into unreal engine. Just use terrain party, problem solved. I used to use them a lot when I made maps on city skylines.
Since E2 hasn't proven that they have created what they claimed, Callum's system is technically better.

One guy, not even one week. Imagine if he teamed up with one other guy that had a better eye for cinematography and they'd make something that not only could do everything Earth2's presentation did, but probably look and function even better in like a week.

I haven't seen such levels of delusion and incompetence since the days of Chris Chan believing he's developing a Sonichu game for Nintendo. Great job Callum for calling out these clowns. Seeing the excuses and copium from the likes of Arya will be the real entertainment here though!
To me, the plug-in content is decent, but looks like it was derived from free-ware plug-ins. The Earth2 video looks like an E3 non-playable graphics model presented by marketing dicks. It reminds me of the promise of Anthem prior to the actual release of Anthem... a false promise. I don't think the challenge was upheld by the challenger. But I'm no video game programmer or expert.
The challenge was for technical capabilities, not artistic. Callum is not an artist, nor does he pretend to be, nor did he criticize E2's art. It is a completely different skill set.
If my biggest investment gets butt hurt over a small fry TH-cam creator I would sell all my stock immediately!
The best part is all the Earth 2 fanboys really thought that Callum couldn't copy what Earth 2 did

They are not the first created such a system, only just one that probably works in real time. For example, there are also renderers in various universities that deal with the evolution of Earth and Mars, among other things. It just doesn't look that good and the calculations usually take several months, but such systems already existed. Ubisoft is also working (or has) on such a landscape system for Beyond Good and Evil 2. You can even see that in one of their dev log videos.

God, I hope not. This is so entertaining to watch. Watching Callum, in 5 days, recreate the tech Shane "Hobo Jones" Isaac said took dozens of developers months to create and then post the video swinging that BDE right upside Shane's head like he was Will Smith and Shane was Chris Rock was amazing.

I'm fairly sure Earth2's devlog footage was just made using a software suite called "World Creator". It does more than what their devlog video shows, actually (it can do realtime erosion simulation and more nuanced stuff like that). It's just subscription software. You could make that footage by just editing together recordings of the project from World Creator.

Thing is that none of the investors are likely of any notable intelligence to begin with. If they were, they would be looking at how Shane is responding to the whole thing as a big red flag. Do you really want to do business with someone who will either reneg on agreements or constantly try to redefine the terms of said agreements when an outcome becomes unfavorable for him? This shows not only a lack of integrity, but lack of foresight to have planned for such an outcome to begin with.
This is the type of personality who sells products on eBay and then tries to justify only sending an empty box or picture of said item, because that’s what they showed in the listing. Lol this is just made with "World machine" engine. Then in that engine you just need to change height map settings for biomes and then blend textures in any game engine.... The dude who tried to replicate earth 2 did overkill... You can even see the limits of the land you can generate with world machine.....

Whether Shane believes it or not, Callum made his point even if not a victory in this stupid challenge it’s a moral victory.

I feel like the Earth 2 stuff is pretty basic, like some World Machine or Houdini stuff almost any one person really could do with training and a powerful rig. It's honestly more impressive Upton is showing his work as functional in UE4, while the Earth 2 stuff I've seen doesn't indicate it is something that can be played. Earth 2 is like No Man's Sky syndrome where there is no guarantee or indication that the areas in the footage shown weren't dolled up specifically to be shown off. There is no longer anything impressive about massive landscapes in modern CG. The land looking good, being properly interactible, and not running like crap on a consumer-level system is what is impressive. Upton's might be less visually pretty, but purely procedural stuff made solo in just a week would undoubtedly be. Upton totally won.

The thing that blew my mind on Earth 2 was how much they were charging for land. What makes that land worth anything? Especially when anybody else could go out and just make another Earth.... E3, E4, E147, all of them worth poo. Cool concept, but focus on building the community first rather than trying to BS people into thinking it's something that it's not. Then, it would have actual value.
Basically, replace lands by N*T and you'll get the answer to your question and whole statement.

However it definately looks like he met the challenge as was originally written.
