I'm gonna be honest it wouldn't surprise me if earth 2 team or Shane himself were to use this challenge as a proof of concept and find a way to make an actual "product" with the files being made public but that's just my speculation
Yes, this is my fear that they will rip off Callum's work. I understand why Callum wants to be transparent, but I think it's a mistake to make any code public. I think they are just hoping to enlist Callum's help for free, because I don't think E2 has got anything at all. All they have is a poorly functioning website.
As soon as I saw the water tower I knew it would be nothing like "the matrix" or "ready player one" They obviously have no plans to put in the work or effort to make an immersive first person experience, all they did was generate the terrain just so they could sell it, there is NO ONE working on the rest of the game they are promising... there will never be any gameplay or cities or any kind of crafting and building, this is not a game, it's just a terrain viewer.

At least on a general level what they are proposing has been done, it's Microsoft's Flightsim. Dude I love you for always having the links in the description. It's annoying to actually follow through with this and too few creators take the trouble. This attention to detail is why we love you.
"Synthesizing satellite data on the fly..." I bought that asset on the Unity store too... u aint special Earth 2. Also the material / shader thing is like... standard built in material / shader support. You can change the color of materials on an object- that's a very basic feature in every game engine.
The shader color change and the random color patterns they show at the end is no different technology than what mmos use to allow skin changes in character customization. The funny thing though is that had they not said it was "revolutionary" or "proprietary" I would have *praised* E2 for finally showing game development progress after all this time.
What the developer said is 100% right, with a perlin noise generator you can easily make a height map and generator for random generation. Tons of games do it and it's relatively easy.
Makes you wonder if Shane knows that Callum's day job is? I'm guessing he doesn't. Things like Nightmare world and his youtube video's are his free time.
Bruh people really think that Callum isn't going to be able to build what Earth 2 currently has when this is the same person developing Nightmare World because someone wanted to see him try to do the same thing as the Dream World devs lmao
Doesn't matter how many people help him and whether it takes a week or 30 mins. He is still replicating "revolutionary technology" with minimal effort and time
Actually, this is a net win for Earth 2. They can fire all of their devs that just slack around and take years to do stuff a single person could do in a week.
They’re asking a TH-camr to do more than they have shown us. All they have shown is is a video image of changing biomes (which we have seen before). It’s a video, anyone could make that including me and I completely suck at this.

@@mas8705 yeah there's been a lot of progress in the last 2 years or so. I've followed the project for a very long time, and it's incredible how far they've come in practical terms. I could go on for too long, but it's been great to see. The reason for the long timeframe is basically that they needed to do a whole lot of stuff from scratch (also a change in engine, but that's ancient history). They needed to do a lot of difficult stuff that isn't really well trodden ground. (Their planet tech is absolutely the best in the business, shit's gorgeous already and it isn't even done yet)
I have no experience in 3d, I just run a scripting business on a "metaverse" called second life, and I often have to play around with 3d objects, and we can achieve the same thing the earth 2 devs achieved on that water tower *in the second life client* by manipulating materials and textures. Not even changing the textures mind you, just simple sliders that change color. Coloring textures have been a part of second life for 20 years almost now, and materials, maybe 5~6 years ? Where's the novelty in what they're doing ? I can reproduce that water tower thing *with no experience with 3d* within 30 minutes on SL. Give me a couple of hours and I wrote you a script that automates the process. Truly the next ground-breaking product in the tech world. 12 years ago, when I started SL, I used to hide it, felt like a nerd, it felt like a dirty little secret, and now cryptobros and "not financial advisors" are all over "metaverses" like it's the next big thing when it's been a thing for over 20 years now and the OG's that have been there for a decade or more are just moving on.
Bro, I'm fucking around in Automation and even in this early access title, you can change the fucking texture of pretty much any part of the car you make. This is amazing. Holy shit. Can't wait for the next news on this.
Why is it that when that whole part about 'significant player customization' came up; All I could imagine was something that was talked about on 'the old G4' and the line of Adam Sessler saying: "Take this car for example. We can't show it to you; Because it's covered in human reproductive organs." And you can just bet that some random person would cover a building, or buildings, in the same fashion.
Im not a developer by any Stretch of the imagination, could barely consider me an amateur if even that, but everything they showed off in the trailer seemed like the average unity asset? Especially the tower: White, clean, simple but Scenic etc. It looked like Just another average model you'd take Instead of making It from zero, Place in the backdrop to save yourself some work and forget about It. Also the ability of changing the colors and opacity of an object and calling It beeing able to "change the material from metallic" to wathever that other stuff ment seems silly. What, Will the tower get hit by lighting stikes more often and have a rust effect Creep over It with a different opacity and shade of color because its supposed to be made of metal?
I will note that Microsoft Flight Simulator uses more advanced techniques than everything shown in the video. It pulls in real satellite and weather data at detail levels far above and beyond anything shown in the video. The rendering techniques in Microsoft Flight Simulator are well above and beyond anything shown in the videos. There is also plenty of user generated content in Microsoft Flight Simulator, from planes to airports to landmarks and more.
3:19 If you know enough to understand all the words in the clip, then you also know that flight simulators have been using these techniques to recreate plausible Earths for 20+ years precisely to avoid reliance on large orthophoto downloads (and licensing nightmares). New my foot, and prototype in this case just means "don't look too close because our implementation sucks".
I am familiar with procedural generation, and Callum is essentially right. If you are familiar with graphical programming you don't even need to use Unity or Unreal Engine. The lighting algorithm has been around since the 70's, and terrain is very easily generated with Fractals or Perlin noise. To do a demo like that, all you need to do is choose a height to be flat and blue, representing water, and then use a color ramp going from green to brown and white. The area is not a problem, Perlin noise and fractals operate by interpolation or subdivision so you get detail for free by zooming. Look at the Terragen software to see state of the art terrain generation.
I looked up the word "proprietary" to make sure I understood it correctly. It literally means "relating to an owner or ownership". so when they say, "look at our proprietary technology!" They're basically saying "look at our our technology!".
Wait. They are making 1 to 1 recreation of earth. So why are they talking about procedural generation? Shouldn't everything be placed by hand, modelled by hand or made by using some other satellite technology like Microsoft flight simulator? If they are making procedural map generation, that will not be 1 to 1 with earth. That will be just "Minecraft RTX in Unity" or something else.
Procedural just means that it's being created on the fly. This can be done with tearrain data, although not to the scale and level Earth2 are promising. You are right everything else would need to be hand crafted. I don't think they are planning on recreating earth though, only the terrain so people can plonk down some low poly buildings on their small patch of worthless virtual space. Basically like a sh*t version of Google Earth with crypto gambling.
@@justanothernobody7142 huh. So it's just used to cut down some work on terrain only? + If you could place your low poly buildings then what about cities and other buildings? You can place your colourful tower on top of the white house or other buildings. Or you could destroy these buildings for your towers and as they call it "holo buildings" I think.
@@THE_PeKa Yes so instead of actually making 3D models of the terrain by hand which is almost impossible, at least for the entire planet anyway, the terrain is generated on the fly using height data. Essentially displacement maps and other maps like normal maps for smaller detail. I don't know how they are going to handle buildings and the like. Personally I think it's highly unlikley they will even get that far. They are stating they are creating something that even some of the biggest game and software developers in the world have so far been unable to achieve. The closest thing out there to what they are going for are things like Star Citizen, NMS and Google Eartth and they are still a long way off from what Earth2 is promising to be.
The tech they "showcased" does in fact already exist. Want proof? Take a look at any of the currently active space exploration games such as Elite: Dangerous or No Man's Sky.
OMG! They figured out how to use a Principled BSDF! Stunning and brave! I never would have thought to change the colors DYNAMICALLY! Genius! NO ONE HAS EVER DONE THAT BEFORE!
Once again, the matrix, ready player one, persona 5, and the entirety of the fictional book and movie tech genre shows how metaverses in general are a bad idea
I saw bigfry's video on this, I commented on that saying that as soon as callum actually replicates what was shown, then earth 2 would probably just take what he made and add that code to theirs.
The new water tower building is first because it occupies single tile and is essential to convert water to industrial water, whatever that is, used to produce ‘resources’. This ensures a ‘player’ needs to own a minimum of two tiles. Likely requiring multiple towers to produce resources, requiring more tiles from Earth 2 or other tile owners. Either way it’s more money to Earth 2.
I love that you've made earth 2 your own pet project that you can dunk on whenever they do something stupid (which is to say, as often as you please) and there's literally nothing they can do about it because their scare tactics and community harassment have no effect on you. keep up the ownage, I'll keep watching
lol....when I create liveries for my cars in Assetto Corsa Competizione I can use their "proprietary shader method" that allows me to give not only a "metallic" finish to the paint, but also "glossy", "satin", "chrome" AND "satin-metallic" finish to it....and if you really feel adventurous you could even create your own special finish, with the highly advanced and sophisticated technique of "opening a text file and fiddling with a grand total of FOUR numeric values".....just....WOW! TRULY REVOLUTIONARY! xD
Betcha he doesn't pay, has a massive petty rant about it, steals Callum's work, but misses some kind of signature or watermark and gets caught out again. Also the Earth 2 truthers will, ironically, still not accept the truth. But it's fun for the rest of us
I don't know Callum. What I do know is that a team leader, made a challenge to a single person, about doing what his team has ALREADY FAILED TO DO. That's like a corporation going "ah, but YOUR mom-and-pop shop can't do what we haven't done either". Well, one thing I'll say is that Earth 2 deserves every penny they've swindled so far. The people that support them really don't seem to have the brains to hold their cash.
Also, the other proprietary technology is just... literally the default material in Unity can do that. Have two inputs for the color/metallic/roughness colors, and use a UV-mapped mask image to blend between them. Or better yet, if you look at the water tower example, you can see that the materials meet right at the edges between polygons, which means he may have used separate materials assigned to different parts of the model.

Spite is a powerful emotion. I expect Callum to be done in 3 days, maybe less.
Is this some new mmo or something
I predict one of two outcomes:
Callum will deliver something that meets the strange conditions that have been named, then they'll accuse him of getting help from a secret development team, refuse to pay him, and then steal his code for their own use when he posts it publicly.
That or the week is the time they need to finish emptying the bank accounts and run.
Another example of E2's toxicity, Arya Reality/Investments decided to mock and shame KiraTV on his mental/physical health, attributing it Kira being upset about being "wrong" about E2. That community is truly filled with truly shit human beings.
its funny because earth 2 people will be as garbage as humanly possible because they want to be right so bad, where as earth 2 skeptics genuinely want to be wrong because its other peoples lives at risk.
@@2Poor4UserName it’s not funny really. The hardcore fans of E2 are the lowest of the internet, would give 8chan a run.

@@CmoIsDaNam3i I believe there will be a cliffhanger at the end of the season, leaving it open..
There is a bunch of idiots throwing money at this "project" and as long as they do that it is going to continue.
The TV show "Earth 2" will be better remembered than this scam hopefully is.
Hey, i remember that show!
Whoa. That’s a deep cut. I didn’t think ANYONE remembered Earth 2!
That's the first thing that comes to my mind reading the titles here. Every single time.
Now wich one has the worse cliffhanger?
i still to this day have rememberance of that super odd show. its prob what scared off all the channels from doing any sci fi show.
Now that is something I haven't heard of in a long time. I remember Tim Curry had a fantastic stint as a villain.
Earth 2 is the content that initially brought me to this channel and now I watch every video you put out. Perhaps the real tile value was the creators we met along the way?
:D good one. always see the positive in things.
Thank you! Everything in this video is information I've been repeating *ad nauseum* for the past 24 hours. I'm a nobody. I realize that no one will listen to me. However, what I am is a game dev with many years of study and experience and I refuse to let blatant scammers like Shame Isaac dump on my experiences by saying old technology is 'revolutionary' or 'proprietary'. lol
This is an amazing video and I feel really glad that someone else finally made a video reflecting what I've been trying to explain.
I'm gonna be honest it wouldn't surprise me if earth 2 team or Shane himself were to use this challenge as a proof of concept and find a way to make an actual "product" with the files being made public but that's just my speculation
And claim copyright, since it's 'clearly' a rip-off of their work.
Yes, this is my fear that they will rip off Callum's work. I understand why Callum wants to be transparent, but I think it's a mistake to make any code public. I think they are just hoping to enlist Callum's help for free, because I don't think E2 has got anything at all. All they have is a poorly functioning website.
have you ever heard of a "Killswitch" ? I'm not worried lmao
I'm sure the Earth 2 Defense Force will rise up and say: "It's not a scam, I have a Tesla. Do your research"
Is this in Red Faction context, or Earth Defence Force context?
.........as someone who loves Earth Defense Force.......I can emission all the tesla with "not a scam" guns bolted on all firing at giant critics XD
Butterball?
Bigfry adding fuel to the fire and trying to call Callum out because he didn't do it in "30 mins" is really infuriating. Thank you for clarifying this stuff for people that don't watch Callum's content or in Bigfry's case, don't pay any attention to it/understand it.
Bigfry really make an oopsies for this obe
Yeah Bigfry video saying how amazing and new this tech is really backed him into a corner. He completely fell into E2 marketing scheme.
Instead of coming clean and admitting he made a mistake he is just adding fuel to the fire.
@@nathaniels9141 I enjoyed some of Bigfry's content before, but I just clicked off that video, he sounded like either got dipped in the kool aid or was shilling for them. Last comment I left was mentioned the fact that they hired a known liar and scammer, said person lied about a lawsuit, Shane then defended said liar and scammer, and here's Bigfry going to bat for them. Wtf man.
Omg Shane is so shook hahaha. Anyone confident in their project would ignore these types of things
the really, really sad part is if someone WAS able to create something like this, then it would have such massive implications for science as a whole. an endeavor that would help shape the world (literally) while making massive strides in scientific computing. scamming whales is much easier though, so i give them that much at least.
At least on a general level what they are proposing has been done, it's Microsoft's Flightsim. Of course it's missing the option to buy tiles, you get the whole world for the base price, and it doesn't have the option to build your own buildings, although 3rd party devs can and do sell improve buildings.
@@Demiurge13 maybe they do, maybe they don't. it honestly doesn't matter because greedy dildos will see the dollar signs and then think that's going to be the way to go. then those of us who aren't stupid enough to throw thousands down (like gambling addicts) will pay the price because that's all "game" companies will do because their CEOs smell the money.
They’re trying to become the defacto Earth analog for the future of NFT driven online ‘virtual reality’ like Ready Player One. But unless developers of these virtual experiences get on board then it’s completely pointless.
Hoo boy, this just went from a dumpster fire to a burning landfill.
Isn't it glorious?
Looking forward to Callum's try on this as his work on his game has been commendable while Earth 2 has been ordering a pizza and getting a saltine cracker with a colony of blooming mold on top a decade later; either way can't wait how it turns out.
This is such a win for Callum, even if the E2 idiots keep moving goal posts and make excuses, their reputation is going to take a massive hit
Dude I love you for always having the links in the description. It's annoying to actually follow through with this and too few creators take the trouble. This attention to detail is why we love you.

Also the material / shader thing is like... standard built in material / shader support. You can change the color of materials on an object- that's a very basic feature in every game engine.
Yeah, that shader shit; I could have done that since my first Unity lesson. Applying and changing shaders is piss easy.

Shane Isaac challenging Callum Upton to build a better E2 in a week with a shoestring budget was a huge mistake….. If anyone can do it, it’s Callum

@@mas8705 Atleast its playable... technically
The saga that keeps on giving so glad there are some full on puds that exist on this planet you would need to be a complete nimrod to buy into this

We can't show it to you; Because it's covered in human reproductive organs."
And you can just bet that some random person would cover a building, or buildings, in the same fashion.
Highlight to my workday, seeing upper echelon new video notification lol
Those devblogs sound like the shit i used to write in college to puff up my wordcount and sound intelligent.
Earth 2 - The gift that keeps on giving.
You are my hero, honestly. Thank you so much! I will go on buying one shirt every week :D
11:00 Anthem also had special metallic surfaces and textures for your robosuit... HAHHAHAHHA
"Proprietary" is a dirty word. Open technologies are the future. Fitting for a scammer though, I guess.
Their propotary tech is so advanced they can do things people have been able to do for decades xD
Technically speaking they would only need to model 300 of those blocks as water would only need color matching.
I am genuinely excited to see your next video on this. Thank you for all the hard work. See you next time
I'd say you're beating a dead horse, but this horse just won't die.
I laughed sooo hard at the sheer joy and glee in Echelons voice as he was narrating . It must be like all his birthdays and Christmases at once !!!
I saw bigfry's video on this, I commented on that saying that as soon as callum actually replicates what was shown, then earth 2 would probably just take what he made and add that code to theirs.
I was down today because of rather complicated news at work, but seeing this thumbnail actually lifted my spirits quite a bit
The things Callum does out of spite is fucking gold I love it!
I'm waiting for the resolution. Can't wait!
lol....when I create liveries for my cars in Assetto Corsa Competizione I can use their "proprietary shader method" that allows me to give not only a "metallic" finish to the paint, but also "glossy", "satin", "chrome" AND "satin-metallic" finish to it....and if you really feel adventurous you could even create your own special finish, with the highly advanced and sophisticated technique of "opening a text file and fiddling with a grand total of FOUR numeric values".....just....WOW! TRULY REVOLUTIONARY!

Earth 2, the gift that keeps on giving. Love your content.
Their bulbous tower casts a shadow that is too intense for what light source is reflected on the bulbous part. They already kinda failed here.
This is a slow and drawn-out self-destruction. Even better than a speedrun!
Earth1 is also doing really well with the self destruction challenge
Bring me thine entertainment! I love that this gravy train just doesn't stop giving.
