Ran my own motorcycle repair garage for 15 years. unfortunately, Covid forced me into closure of the business.
I enjoyed every moment of being my own boss, but after closing it, I took a regular job as a support worker in mental health, and within a few months had enrolled in University at 40 years old to persue a degree in health and social care.
I haven't looked back since and get much more satisfaction in my new role. Never be scared to explore new things!
In America there is an old adage that goes, "find something to do that you love and makes you happy and just do it, and the money will follow." This probably works for some, but not for everyone.

Small business owner north of Seattle here. You absolutely nailed it. I've been working in my industry for 11 years, brick and mortar owner for just over 2. Despite being wildly different fields(exotic animals here) and halfway across the world, your business points are 100% on point. I suspect it's just the nature of the beast being self employed. Thank you for sharing your struggles as well as your successes, it's so important for growth and learning to acknowledge both. It was pure chance I found your channel but I'm here to stay. Thanks Sid for sharing this! I have been self employed for 3 years and it’s not easy at all. I wouldn’t change it for the world. So everything that you said is on point. I have a head injury so I suppose this is more therapy than a job. I try to grow as much as I can in the garden in the warmer months to keep costs down. Everyone wants everything for free these days which is so frustrating as they don’t know all the work that you have put into getting that bouquet to the customer. Thanks for sharing! Although I share your dislike for social media at times, I'm glad you decided to start your own channel here, because aside from having a good head for business, you have a gift for mentoring and teaching others and always come across as so genuine. You talk so much sense. Been self employed for 32 years . First 25 was working with my father and the last 7 on my own as he's retired. Anxiety completely agree with you. Fear of employing people when I get crazy busy and then felling responsible for them. Body falling to pieces and knowing I will still be working for another 20. Constant expense of tools. Bloody paperwork. I wouldn't change a thing because I love my job. Keep on being told I should get on social media but is scares the shit out of me but I know its what I have to do to move forward. The best way to reduce imposter syndrome or anxiety about when the good months will end, is to take stock of EVERY success. I work in sales and having good weeks, months and years is the goal. Take note of what happened and why it was successful then how you can multiply it by X amount to ensure the success as best as possible. It takes away the anxiety of the "what ifs" because you know exactly why something was successful and what wasn't. Also ps, look into the program called Hootsuite or something of the sort. You can set up your socials and forget about them. Takes away a bit of the stress. Or get a uni student on a contract who's studying communications. Sorry for the rant but you've got a great channel and I want to see the success!!! Keep going man!

Im 22 and started my Exterior cleaning business ( Witherley Exterior Cleaning ) last year whislt on furlough. I gained enough work to quit a job i hated to pursue my goal of being self employed but i can honestly say, although i absolutely love my job, it has been extremely difficult and taxing on the mind. I can completely relate to every point you've made in this video, fingers crossed it will get slightly easier when my 1st year is over but regardless, being successful doesnt come easy !
Regarding the bad side-effects of vibrations: It's an actual disease called "vibration-induced white finger syndrome" or Raynaud-syndrome. It's pretty common when you're working with tools, that swing, vibrate or oscillate at certain frequencies. Though it's effects seem to not outright develop, but at a later time, years perhaps. I've seen this being a problem with seasoned, longtime blue-collar guys. There are certain types of gloves which can reduce the intensity of vibrations being transmitted to your hands.

Great video Sid, I can relate to this as I'm starting up my garden maintenance business in Staffordshire, doing it on my rest days from my normal job and evenings. Good advice especially regarding the commitment and time needed, its never ending, as is the social media!
Just started my own pressure washing business. Been going about 2 months now. The biggest thing for me is the not switching off it’s crazy how much time I spend thinking about it. Stressing about not enough work the other. But 100% would rather be putting all my energy it to something that is mine. Thanks for all your videos definitely helped me start following my dreams. I think anyone starting up in any business could testify to your relative points of obvious dangers and put falls! I’m a joiner! And like you say the start up cost are crazy! And the tools!!!! Man! I have spent a small fortune on these and always looking at the next thing! But I wouldn’t change a thing! I love watching your channel! I find the nature of your job so satisfying! I’d love to do this one day! Certainly for my on enjoyment! Love the FSL and re-sanding! Something so satisfying about that! Keep up the great content man!

Good video, in the main I agree with most of the points you make.
I'll be honest, weekends are my time. I used to work every single weekend as an employee....so as soon as I started my business it was a conscious choice to say no to working weekends (for the most part...if I do a school I'll work on Saturday every couple of months)
I do get peace of mind knowing my work is regular and organised barring any cockups etc and I can imagine your anxiety levels will rise if the work you do is ad hoc etc.
As for taking guys on, if your work is on a rota your ability to plan makes things simpler. If your work is ad hoc use Co tractors and be up front about workflow...you'll be surprised just how chilled some contractors are about contract ad hoc work.

Interesting video mate. I relate to you a lot, we both setup at a similar time doing basically the same thing and both have young kids and family. Watching how you grow and manage your business is really helpful, the odd point you make here and there makes me question how/why I do things in the way I do. Your totally right about not switching off, I do a roof moss job and when I lay in bed with my eyes closed, it’s like I’m back on the roof! 😂🤦🏼♂️ driving around on a day off ‘oh, they need their roof doing, they’re driveway needs a wash’ 😬😂 9months into being self employed and would never go back to being employed again. Best decision I’ve ever made 👍🏻

I was halfway through a large roof job this week, after the first day it been out in the sun all day scraping, a serious effort to make the following say easier, woke up the next day and WOW - I couldn’t move haha! Love that feeling though 👍🏻

Really interesting vid! Having worked in the training industry for over 10 years, I've seen so many small businesses not budget for the costs of mandatory certification and H&S training, etc, so they don't bother. It's only when it's too late and the worst has happened that they then panic to get all their guys trained properly that they realise the investment it is.

Facebook selling pages are elite in this business.. especially for gutter cleaning and pressure washing. I genuinely don’t pay for or use any other form of advertising and I get so many jobs from Facebook, the key is posting on the selling pages as much as possible and posting very good looking before and after pictures and it’s great!

Hey Sid totally agree with everything you said in the vid, I am going through my first year of business and it consumes your every waking hour, I'm lucky because I have a friends house that I go round on regular basis and its the only time I get to switch off having that is a god send.
Well done sid. Like you said, there are some points that are not spoken about lol. I'm the same, just when I think about taking a chunk of profit, I realise there is something else I need lol.
LOL watching this was like looking in a mirror. I Run my own I.T business and have done since 2014. I'm doing really well for a one-man band but do find it hard at times. I find it really hard to switch off, I hate taking leave constantly thinking about business a will be losing and what future work would have come from that. But it's all mine and I would not have it any other way. I too won't take people on as I just don't need the stress that comes with it. Now I am 45 but the concerns are still the same. Keep at it and stay true to your values.

Good video, Sid! I like how calmly and realistically you’ve touched on this subject. Another thing: do not obsess over TH-cam. I know how miracle-ish it seems to be able to grow at this speed, I even understand it from your business perspective, but I would still suggest to think of a number of videos you could upload in a week, then divide that number by two. Potential subscribers will be here, so will your “regulars”, if you do less, but do it pretty much consistently. I don’t want to send you away, don’t get me wrong :) I just don’t want this to suck you in & cause more anxiety by making you feel like you have to do absolutely everything not just in your work but in here as well. Longest comment of my life. Sorry!

Don’t be afraid to get staff, you’ll work it out and it’ll change the business in ways you didn’t expect.
I just know that I am not good at being self employed. I work for someone but I am somewhat aware of the thinks you can encounter.
but even working for someone if you have the mind of someone being the employer it makes me motivated to do the best I can and go the extra mile if that means my employer can eat well.
In the end I do rely on that he is doing well if only for my own gain.

My best tip from over 20 years in the trade,
Even as a sole trader one man band, make sure you have weekends and holidays as being self employed is one reason why you make time for yourself and family. If you let business dictate your life 24/7 your failing at the primary principal of being your own boss in my opinion. I don't work 24/7 365
2 things about business i've learnt to be true. No one becomes rich working for someone else and the second is as a business person, if your not expanding your business with equipment or people you should be expanding it into passive income with assets. I have my bread and butter company where i exchange my time for money. i leave as much of this money behind and try not to touch it. I then use that money to buy a house to earn a passive income. Leveraging your profits before you have to draw a wage on them is extremely powerful. You have a good work ethic and will do well im sure

Great video and real talk....I suffer from the vibration issues from the pressure washer , think they call it white finger , it's awful , most days the right hand is numb or pins and needles

Yeah there’s some gloves specially for it, try searching anti vib gloves, I presume a lot of heavy pressure machinery guys use them 👍👍

Carpal tunnel syndrome aka white finger comes about after long use of vibrating equipment. I've have/ had it pressure washing for last 6 years. Dont think there is going to be a cure unless you give up the tools that cause it but you can certainly reduce it. First thing I did was buy a suttner gun/ lance witch has LTF from Q washers so much easier to hold the trigger in as it's not fighting you wanting to release under pressure. The lance has an ego grip to reduce vibration but tbh it still had a lot of vibration imo , I got a rubber car mat and zip tied it on quite thick which reduced vibration massively found some better rubber matt on ebay which looks smarter and works a treat. Still wanted to reduce the vibration further so for the last 3 years I have been using a large plastic spring clip to keep the trigger held in- game changer! Phill from dirty driveway uses velcro and others take the trigger mechanism apart and use a ball valve on the hose. I find the spring clip easy to whip on and off ,again all about getting used to it and being mindful about not leaving it on the trigger when the petrol runs out! Also dont grip the gun lance to hard let the pressure float the lance. Take breaks to let the body recover. I'm not endorsing any methods just saying it has worked for me. All the best. M

Please be safe with the chemicals, I know you touched on that, but it's critical to ALWAYS where a respirator. My brother in law did a job similar to your job and did not always wear his safety gear as he should. He died 13 years ago at age 46 from Leukemia brought about by his use of chemicals in cleaning. It was a very cruel, very slow, and horrible way to die.~Peace~
