      Yeah, he's convinced me to wait for the Ioniq 5 or EV6 with 350 kW charging. I really wanted a Polestar 2 with tan leather seats and gold Brembo brakes but it maxes out at 150 kW and that seems kind of slow these days. Don't like Tesla but the 250 kW v3 Supercharger network makes long road trips in an EV seem almost like using a gas car.

      We are nearing, but not there yet. For me, personally, the limit is 10 to 80 % (let's call it 300 km of range as that's what matters, not percentages) in about 5 minutes. Pushing further doesn't really make much sense to me. And it's doable. It would be expensive but we have the technology (it's primarily about the battery). Then again I don't have children or a dog and I don't need 20 minutes for a bathroom break. I also prefer to prepare my own food for a trip. But yes, 350 kW is serviceable and certainly a lot better than 50 kW.
      No, the real challenge is something like towing. Not only current electric vehicles don't have the capacity to tow heavier trailers, consumption will go through the roof and good luck charging with a trailer attached. Roof racks are less of a headache but still significantly impact consumption and therefore range. And that's the dilema for me. As long as EVs can't do it, I will have to keep a conventional car whether I like it or not. And in that case, should I really buy a bigger, touring EV or should I stick to a city car where EV has the biggest benefit (and which will cover majority of my driving)? Reason says Fiat 500, heart says e-tron GT.

    • @godblesshamas
      @godblesshamas 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jobicek It's those stoopid (can't even spell it dumb) wheels that are killing the range. I was looking at a new GV70 for a highway cruiser and with 21" rims the 4 cylinder gets the same (bad) gas mileage as the V6. Boggles my mind why anyone would do that to their EV, it literally defeats the purpose of going electric.

    Nice! You will be happy to hear that the Taycan get as good range and efficiency while being able to sleep in the back as there is no annoying blockage above your legs and the car will operate without noise. You can get a 4s or a Taycan 2wd. Also, my Michelin tires are not quite as high aspect ratio making for a wonderful ride. Congratulations on the record! I just did a 1000km trip myself and found the trip and charging wonderful.

    Hello. Please correct me if I am wrong. At the end of the run you showed 1000 km and 9:30 hours. You had a delay of 5 minutes due to faulty charger. So you have to deduct 5 minutes from 9:30, right? Then you should register 9:25. Instead you added 5 minutes to 9:30 and got 9:35.

    • @Vercixx
      @Vercixx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe the time calculation is against the clock, not against what the car measured. The clock showed 7 :41, it was morning, he started at 10 :00 in the evening, so the total trip time is 9h41'. If you subtract 5' you get to 9h36' which Bjorn rounds to the nearest multiple of 5' and so you get the final figures: 9h35'.

    We were on a road trip in the Etron 55, stopped to charge and walked to a restaurant that was a little busy. Got a notification on my iWatch that the car had fully charged before the food came to our table! The Etron 55 @ 150KW is usually almost done charging after a restroom break. Fast Charging is only a small time penalty over running an ICE car.

    • @bochap2127
      @bochap2127 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's actually a negative for an EV, because you have to walk back to the car to move it away before eating.

    • @biff2bart509
      @biff2bart509 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bochap2127 Actually, it's a positive, because in an ICE vehicle, you would have spend 5 mins with the car while you were refueling, then head to the restaurant. In an EV, you just start the charge then leave it until it's done. And e-tron 55 is beast mode when charging on 150+kW chargers!

    • @bochap2127
      @bochap2127 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@biff2bart509 You have to read what he wrote. He said the car was fully charged before the food came to the table. You can't leave it until it's done, you have to unplug once its done. Many chargers will start charging expensive idle fees if you do not return to unplug and drive away. Also, in an ICE car, you can park next to the restaurant and not have to park at the charger and walk to the restaurant, so the 5 minutes extra for putting in fuel is negligible.

    • @biff2bart509
      @biff2bart509 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bochap2127 I read exactly what he said. Yeah, you have to stop if you don't want idle fees (or should stop if you don't want idle fees), but you can plug in your car, go get your food started (which will be the LONGER part of the process) a few minutes before you would finish filling up with gas. Most chargers also have about 10 mins of free idle time, so it's not like you have to rush away from your table the instant it finishes charging. After owning half a dozen ICE cars, I've made the switch to EVs and there are very few downsides unless: you're in a rural area / lack infrastructure or you need to drive a LOT very regularly (or the initial cost is too high). All of these situations are improving extremely quickly in many places in the world. It's not for everyone, but it's certainly good now for many / most people in the developed world.

    • @bochap2127
      @bochap2127 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@biff2bart509 I'm not saying ICE is better than EV overall. I'm saying that in this particular aspect, ICE beats EV *if the EV charges too quickly* .
      """ you can plug in your car, go get your food started (which will be the LONGER part of the process) a few minutes before you would finish filling up with gas."""
      This *absolutely makes no sense* . You don't plug in your car to fill it with gas.
      Bottom line is that if the car charges too quickly, you have to return to the car, unplug, drive it off, park and go back to the restaurant. This is a disadvantage. Remember, the charger will not be next to the restaurant. It is going to take perhaps 5 minutes to walk there.

      @@MiccaPhone This car has AC charging on front left in addition to CCS-combi on front right, though I think most people buying this car has garage parking at home and will not be charging much while street parked. For drive-through fast chargers it does not matter, but for "nose in" chargers it would be better with front left or rear right which is most common among other EVs except Tesla which mostly charges on their own superchargers. If this and a regular etron tries charging at a 2-stall location they better park with the charge ports towards the middle or one of them will probably not be able to charge because the other car has parked towards the middle.

    To make it a fair "competition", I think it's a good idea to order the cars by the total charging times, not the total overall times. I guess the intention is to always drive with same speed (limit + max 10%). However, I have the impression - after having watched many of these 1000 km challenges - that the actual driving speed can vary due to weather, traffic, road conditions etc.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nope, that's incorrect. Total time is what counts. Some cars need more charging stops and therefore more overhead. Some cars with limited range even had to drive slower to reach the next charger. And some cars overheat the battery and also needed to drive slower.

    Agree with your theory that these new electric cars don't matter compared with "fossil cars" due to normal "human breaks" but it all depends on the charger network.
    You need many "energy" stations with very fast chargers, enough available spots, together with decent food/rest place.

    18:35 I disagree with you.. I think that only when you’ll be able to do it in 8 hours or less EV’s are a real alternative to non EV cars. An EV has to be able to run it like a non EV. This week I had to make a 400 kms trip (200 km’s both ways) to get something from a client and get back. I couldn’t stop more than five minutes. I have an EV Hyundai kona and I had to drive my other car (gasoline) or, otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to do it.
    There are lot of people that drive long trips besides for pleasure and can not be stopping for long periods of time to charge up.
    We are getting more and more fast charges that solve part of the problem. Now, efficiency is what has to be improved so EV cars can really be driven for longer trips non stop if needed.
    Finally, today I just did a 600 km long trip on a non EV car and it took me only 4 hours and 30 minutes with a 10 minutes break. If I would take my EV, the trip would take 7 hours

    • @bjornnyland

    I'm not sure what the "challenge" is if you can deduct time for less than optimal circumstances. Wouldn't one be able to calculate the exact time from results of the range test? • @callistoscali4344

      I think one should only deduct time if the delay is not an EV specific issue, traffic, road works, etc. If it is an EV specific issue like charger failure, slow charging speed, etc, then there should be no deduction. You are right, it is a challenge after all.

    • @bjornnyland

      We always deduct time if there's something irregular happening that would not happen in other tests. In the recent 1000 km challenge in Model 3 SR+, I had to deduct 15 minutes. Or maybe we should not deduct the 15 minutes? ;)

However, because it is a challenge, then all the unforeseen circumstances should be taken into account.
