Doug clearly gave the most lines to the ones he felt had the most talent. If anything, he was TOO nice. Marzgurl was only given a job because she lost the "Nostalgia Chick" contest, and Doug decided to give her and Chick with the Goggles a slot anyway.
When Spoony brought Brad Jones on, Linkara's billing got knocked down a little bit, and there was a clear yet unspoken tier list that Doug was too nice to admit to.
The real irony being that Lindsay was absolute shite on toast as well. Only Brad, Phelous and Brandon Tenold were really any good.
@@knshinn2 Phelous always seemed like a better foil to Doug than Linkara. Dude is so deadpan & relaxed in comparison to Doug that it's what got me interested in his content, especially since I was getting more into horror stuff thanks to him. Hope he's doing alright.

I just watched Rob's commentary on To Boldly Flee. Hearing his version of how the whole "rape" scene went down was kind of interesting. Here's more-or-less what he said:
So, apparently Rob originally wrote it as kind of a “scary” scene (with her being assimilated), which then turns into something funny when Film Brain hears them and thinks they’re having sex. The joke being that the sounds he hears are so goofy and cartoony, and it’s so obvious she’s being assimilated, but he mistakes it for sex anyway.
Then, somewhere down the line, Doug got hold of the scene, and added in lines for Lindsay. From his point of view, it was to make it more clear why Film Brain would think they were having sex, but according to Rob, they ended up making the scene come across more “rapey”. Lindsay & Linkara, who were both somewhat upset about it, went to Rob, to talk to him about it.
Rob assured Lindsay that he wouldn’t let the scene come out if it came across like she was being raped, and that he would personally edit the scene himself if he had to - which he did. He replaced Doug’s original sound effects (which apparently just reinforced the whole “rape” misunderstanding) with tech sounds from Transformers and stuff. When he talked to Doug about it, Doug’s response was apparently something along the lines of “I guess I’m just too naïve. I don’t get what the problem is, because I don’t think that way…” (though to be fair to Doug, listening to his own commentary, it sounds like he also had his doubts about how the scene was sounding). They did end up sending the final cut of the scene to Lindsay for her approval, even offering to cut it completely if she wasn’t satisfied with it, and she said “I don’t think it’s particularly funny, but I have no real problem with it as it is now.”
The funny thing is, according to Rob, Lindsay actually calmed down about it fairly quickly, saying “I trust you” when he assured her he wouldn’t let a scene she was uncomfortable with come out. Linkara, however, wouldn’t let it drop for the entire shoot. Apparently, he kept on saying “You know, Doug wrote a rape scene!” According to Rob, he sounded “like a brother tattling to his parents”. He just kept going on and on about it, saying things like “This may violate my feminist principles” (lmfao). Rob tried to reason with him, but he kept going on about it, at one point saying that even the very act of what he is doing (assimilating her) is a form of rape, to which Rob basically responded by saying “Well, blame the writers of Next Generation then! THEY’RE the ones who wrote the Borg that way!”
I cant believe Linkara and co. lied about the rape scene. truly shocking.
Also worth noting: Spoony did an interview with the Excom developers AFTER the Betrayal thing. Not saying just trust anything Spoony says, but Lordkat's claim that killed his chances is laughable at best. It didn't even ruin Spoony's chances with the games developers.
From what I recall the devs actually took in pretty good humour so christ knows what LK was on about

I mean LordKat eventually joined the drudgery degenerate site known as KiwiFarms, and they ate up his words with no question. Hell, they were quick to jump on the ChangeTheChannel bandwagon like everyone else did no questions asked, and never even questioned it for a while.
And that was a site that also had threads on several of the CTC paper contributors like Linkara. Really shows the double standards of that site.
It reminds me of when the band Winger blamed their failure on the kid in Beavis and Butthead they bullied always wearing a Winger T-shirt.

The moral of the Channel Awesome drama: never trust anything that LordKat, Obscurus Lupa, or Linkara have to say on anything.

I can agree with this. The problem is his ego and success wouldn’t let him actually mature his content at all, and his comedic sensibilities are insufferable. When it’s just him talking and being more conversational, he’s a lot more appealing, but I guess he isn’t willing to expand more on that and instead would rather churn out moderately successful but outdated content that is totally insular and irrelevant to nearly everyone.

@@mackybell14 I remember some years ago watching him and his brother talk about Steven universe pretty regularly. It wasn't my favorite show or channel or video series but generally when I saw them recommended I would give them a listen. When you get Doug without the nostalgia critic filter he's pretty genuine and nice to listen to. I remember the uproar about retiring the critic character but honestly that wasn't the problem at all. It's downright sad to see him wearing the costume now knowing how much he wants to be rid of it. If he had gone in a more genuine direction and prioritized the review portion of his videos, the part he's good at, he would've done great. Doug thinks a little too highly of himself just like every other channel awesome member. I just wish he knew what his actual strengths were.

The Channel Awesome Lore is embarrassingly the most autistically involved I've ever been with an internet community. I was there from the start. There's been a ton of good retellings of the event with varying quality. This is without a doubt the best. You speak as an outsider of the community and for that reason or another it allows you to form your own interpretation of that events with more clarity rather than letting internal biases get in the way. This is my favorite video of the event and if I could like it a million times I would.

I am certainly not defending Suburban Knights or To Boldly Flee, nor am I heaping praise on the movies that I am about to transcribe. I am merely pointing out that pretty much the same time that Doug was making this low-budget junk, "Hollywood" was also green-lighting those stupid movies (Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Meet The Spartans) that also had a "plot" that involved random characters from popular movies making cameos and saying mangled quotes, only to have something really stupid happen. If "Hollywood" thought this was a great idea, you can understand why Doug thought this would work as well.
On a side note, every time someone mentions these films (not that often), I keep reminding myself that DC Comics thought the Batgirl movie was "unsalvageable", but this stuff got greenlit.
Probably a difference of budgets and both Warner and Disney really need to trim their movie budgets. Still the fact it was considered so bad they canned Batgirl actually makes me want to watch it now.

Spoony is so tragic because he legitimately could have been one of the biggest, if not THE biggest reviewer on TH-cam, but then he had his mental breakdown because he made too much money, and was too successful.
It's just funny how LordKat of all people is like "Yeah, I could have been huge if Spoony hadn't embarrassed me," because, bruh, a big part of the reason LordKat is even relevant is because of Spoony's outburst.

Glad I'm not the only one who was skeptical of the Change The Channel document. For a while it seemed like everybody in every Discord server I was in had swallowed that Kool-Aid without hesitation, which made Doubting Toms like myself none too popular. _Literally_ all I was asking was for people to acknowledge the inconsistencies in the complaints and simply reserve judgment on these ANONYMOUS testimonies until concrete proof was presented, and apparently that was enough to put me on thin ice with some of the admins of those servers. I don't know what it is about unsubstantiated accusations that make people act like tribalistic animals, but it's quite a thing to behold.
Fun-Fact: Allegedly Spoony's back and I don't mean "Orange Man Bad. Woe is me." Spoony we had for awhile. No, I mean actual Spoony.
MarzGurl (No idea why she uses "Gurl") abandoned her youtube about six months ago, Her actual website is dead (Literally, it's just an error message) and is a Twitch Streamer with a small viewer base of around 80. But, she apparently an actual Voice-Actor that won an award recently. Oh and she's super Breadtube. 5 mins ago as of writing this she tweeted "And whatever a Black Fan feels is probably true to their experience" (Because that makes sense and absolutely isn't playing with fire.)
Her hold involvement in kick-vic should be took with a grain salt because she may have had something to gain with joining Chris Sabbat's side in the argument. 🛑(Cliff-Notes for those that don't know: Chris Sabbot (Piccolo from Dragon Ball) is a heavy hitter in the American VA scene, owning one of the major studios for Anime Dubbing specifically and his voice can be heard in almost all English Dubbed Anime going back 20 years, if not longer. He, for whatever reason, wanted Vic Mignoia (Probably misspelled last name) gone from the industry. I've heard everything from Vic having a brighter future, Vic being a better VA to just Chris being jealous of Vic's admitted sexual exploits with consenting adult women. Vic is a arguably attractive, fit man that was know for cheating on his wife alot, Chris Sabbot is an arguably unattractive out of shape man that is also know for cheating. However, Chris had to pressure the women into it Casting couch style.)🛑 Chris Sabbot is a heavy in a small, gate-kept industry that she's starting to make roads into. She spoke out in favor of Vic, her career would be over before it began. She comes out supporting Chris, she might get some extra work. It may just be flatout networking for her. In her sitation it's more advantageous to be on Sabbot's side then on Vic's. And if Vic does eventually succeed in holding everyone slandering him accountable, she's so small no one would care.

Spoony recently did an interview with the actor who played Curtis in Phatasmagoria 2, and he seemed to be in better shape physically and mentally than he was, in which he talks briefly about a video he's intending to make on some garbage D&D movie. He's also been streaming again, and while I only checked in on a couple, he seems in better spirits in them and isn't yelling at his fans anymore. I think there's a sliver of hope for him, though he's still tweeting way too fucking often. I hope Musk really does destroy twitter so Noah will have no choice but not to use it.
Fully aware this is probably just wishful thinking, but honestly I'm just happy he doesn't seem suicidaly depressed anymore and blackmailing people who're worried about him with it. Might feel different if I was one of the people whose money he ran away with kek.
I watched that interview and yeah..he really did seem like his old self again. Aside from his god awful livestreams I've heard so much about, isn't that the first time he's been in front of a camera in years? I've only ever followed anything he's been up to the past few years more through osmosis rather than actually following him ( I refuse to use Twitter for one thing), but from everything I've heard about him maybe, just maybe, he could come back. Then again...we've all heard this before.

Really the biggest barrier is going to be getting him to stop tweeting every hour and actually working on his videos, but he does seem to be having fun. I don't follow him on twitter either but I do check in on his account from time to time.

@Abrasious Productions Yeah, the comic is overhyped, and I missed that train when it was first being uploaded. From what I've heard, the fan base was fine at first when it was just a bunch of 4chan shitposters, but once shippers from the Hetalia fandom got involved, it quickly went downhill.

My initial reaction to the document was never in malice to Doug and being confused by how people painted that one scene as ‘crepe’ which, yes; isn’t even what’s happening. I’ve said this before but JonTron being mass community disowned was a bandaid being ripped off compared to the CA downfall. Comes to show that ‘picking your friends wisely’ has inherent benefits, especially online.

It's a drag how Channel Awesome imploded on itself with all the pettiness and rotten things going on behind the scenes. Doug and his current team are still doing well so everything mostly turned out all right in the end.
Thank you for giving some love to Brad Jones. He is one of the few to make it out of channel awesome unscathed, even if his audience is dwindling nowadays. His content has stayed consistent for well over a decade, and he's great friends with Doug to this day. For real, they still do videos together every once and a while, and they have a great chemistry. They're both super excited whenever they record videos together.
It's sad that if someone searches Channel Awesome, you're going to first get a ton of videos from 5 years ago of everybody giving their 2 cents based on a lot of false and exaggerated claims and takes from people who just seemed to not like Doug Walker, or the fact that the guy was TH-cam famous at the time. But that's the internet for you, anybody that is successful at something might as well paint a bulleye on their back, because there are going to be people who are looking for any indiscretion to make a big deal of and get you cancelled.
Frankly, it's amazing how quick everyone was quick to jump on the CTC movement when it first came out. Even the sites mocking Channel Awesome and its individual users like Lewis or Dan Olson (including notorious Lolcow-bashing/producing sites 4Chan and KiwiFarms) barely questioned it at first glance because ot the hateboners they had towards Doug, Rob and Mike, even with their pre-established hate for the document's contributors because the latter three were (apparently) the bigger assholes by comparison.
But now here we are - Most of these critics have either retreated to their own corners or stopped being relevant, those sites mocking CA have only gotten worse with age in ways that can be called hypocritical (both 4Chan and KF have harbored groomers and pedos despite their claims to hate them and have only gotten further and further into the deep end of insanity to the point of splitting the sites' userbases in half) while Doug, despite having gotten worse, is still going on as if nothing happened.
@@Newsystuffs based on what i've seen the channel awesome threads on kiwifarms have gotten more respectful towards doug to the point that their opinions on ctc have shifted to hating them more than doug, although most of it is just them doing research and finding out how alot of the complaints were either exaggerated or outright lies.

Doug's work has the same naive, surreal quality of a porn parody with all the sex scenes cut out, or finding published copies of Chris Chan's "Sonichu" in a mainstream book store. It's just interesting how many youtube commentary channels have made a career on talking about Channel Awesome's body of work (behind their back) like they aren't fully aware how much all of it sucks.

Somebody linked me this video, and I'm so glad I watched it. I was one of those few who always looked at the ChangeTheChannel shenanigans with a skeptical view, just because I was also aware of how skeevy a lot of the involved parties were. Doug Walker was and is by no means perfect and I fully believe he mismanaged things, but the fact that everybody complaining about him had sketchy histories themselves made me question how truthful the accusations were. The part where you brought up how the document tried to throw Channel Awesome under the bus for the Jew Wario situation, all while running defense for Holly who directly shielded Jew Wario for years, really opened my eyes for how full of crap that document really was. It was pettiness, pure and simple, and the fact that Doug and Brad have actually maintained their audiences while AngryJoe, Linkara, Lindsey, and everybody else have turned into LOLcows really speaks to how much they really did need Doug.
Firstly, thank you for calling out LordKat about Spoony. When I heard his rant I thought he was a man with anger issues with blaming others for his failings. In his streams he came across as an unpleasant person. Even if it's true that LordKat lost the interview because of Spoony, that rant would have killed off any opportunities. If I had worked in PR and heard that rant I would have blacklisted LordKat.
Whenever I watched Obscurus Lupa I always felt something off about her. Her persona was always stiff and forced. She wasn't that entertaining or interesting and I avoided her videos. I avoided quite a few CA producers because they didn't have the personality and some became obsessed with their storylines, things I would skip because it was so cringe. Spoony was one of the few that made the storyline watchable and he was naturally the funniest.
One of the pettiest complaints in the Change the Channel document was complaining about Disneycember. They complained that Doug was posting a video a day and hogging all the limelight. But it became an annual tradition, and some people looked forward to it.
A lot of people who were in CA have moved on. Some are embarrassed by their videos. Mathew Buck hasn't done BMB for years, Lindsay Ellis does video essays, and Mike Jeavons just makes videos about tat and fast food. I like Mathew Buck's Projector videos and I find some of Lindsay Ellis' essays interesting like her Hobbit Trilogy, but I wouldn't want to meet her.
Lupa is a bitch.
I told her some of her episodes weren't good in my opinion and damn!.

What's funny is that most of the contributors from the trilogy that either had fun, or said and did the least are ironically the ones that were/are the ones doing relatively as well as Doug. Bennett The Sage largely did his job, minded his business, built a brand that stands on its own, and his career has been all the better for it. At the same time, one thing that Almighty didn't mention that adds even more context is that.... A LOT of these assholes who were either making comments or were directly involved with making the document were dating and fucking each other at the time. All the women like Lindsey and Lupa are insane, and the dudes they were smashing at the time, Todd and Phelous were pussy whipped like shit. Just a whole lot of petty conflicts of interest.

Thank you for this video! I had no idea that the Change the Channel document was so flawed! I watched a livestream of a guy reading through the entire thing and man, what a whiplash of holly being depicted as a tragic, overworked manager, and now to protecting a sex pest.
I wonder how much Spoony's self-inflicted downfall was because of how Channel Awesome threw him under the bus. If I was in his shoes and that kind of shit got thrown at me from people I trust, I'd probably burn out on life too.

When I was at the end of my high school days and entering college, I watched Doug and some of the lads because I stupidly thought the idea of website with a group of people having their own story inspired me to try piece it together with all the anniversary movies (I thought To Boldly Flee was a good flick, just because I was dumb). I also fell into that anti CA shit with Asaliaeri dumbassery. The document to me was seeing a lot of stuff being justified for the hate of the content, but I questioned why the people who hated it stayed for so long. As the house of cards came down, I look back and go "man, it could've been worse. I could've been Quinton Reviews"

As someone who ventured through this insanity back when it was TGWTG, I can honestly say I enjoyed these three specials, along with Linkara's special as well. To the point that while I love watching videos like these that rip them apart, I know I can still rewatch all four and not feel like I'm wasting my time. Course, I likely would also be playing a game too, but still.
I guess it's just me being a victim of *nostalgia.* And knowing the in-jokes and history helped too.

The entire reason I think the document is fake is because of one person who's been silent through all of it: Guru Larry.
Guru Larry is still on Channel Awesome, even though he though he gets more views now then Doug does and genuinely doesn't need it. He's even recently made jokes about how he's going to be the last person on the site. If everything in that document were true, why would Guru Larry risk everything keeping his name attached to the Channel Awesome brand even when he gains nothing from it anymore? He has everything to lose and nothing to gain. That alone tells me he doesn't even think document is accurate and he's one of the actual channel awesome people. Also apparently the only one that's not an unhinged weirdo. That fact is why I just his choices on it. If he were a sex-pest with skeletons in his closet, they would have already came out.

I used to watch nostalgia critic fairly regularly, heard about the change the channel thing, heard some stuff here and there about it, but couldn't really tell what was actually going on. I've also been somewhat interested in knowing wtf Doug's movies were like, though I practically only know angry joe besides Doug and his brother.... So, thanks for not only summing up the movies, but kinda boiling down what really kinda mattered in the document. It was nice to see that angry Joe have pretty much the most fun in the movies, also nice to see that practically the only 2 people I'm vaguely interested in from time to time, Doug and Angry Joe, didn't seem too bad when discussed in the documents. (Sure Doug possibly a bit of an ego at some points, and incompetent, but that’s relatively not that bad compared to a ton of internet "celebrities")

this was a fun series. I watched almost everything channel awesome put out until shortly after Kickassia. I knew some of the drama but it was nice to have extensive over few of all the intrigue and controversial claims. I especially appreciate you adding some references to Oney /Jim and the Jokes like the Bat Credit Card at the end. The whole thing had some nice editing.

I remember the Lupa/Todd/Chick love triangle being a recurring joke on Todd and Chick's channels. I wonder how much of TBF's stupid long runtime was because it was trying to play in all the various plot threads from all this other bullshit going on with the site. In a lot of ways, I think that was Doug learning his lesson from what you criticized Kickassia for, namely, trying to make it feel more ensemble and less like a 2hr nostalgia critic episode. The problem is that everybody on CA was so far up their own asses that attempting to juggle all this stuff and make everybody feel "included" was going to always result in a jumbled mess.
