One thing I loved about new order was that BJ was a fleshed out and decent man forced into impossible circumstances, but who never misdirected his anger. We never see him treat anyone as less than himself. He shelters his love without treating her like she has nothing to contribute, and is kind to Max. He only hates the Reich, and never lets that anger become unfocused. Much more gentle than you’d expect from Wolfenstein.
@@samcooper2474they could have made Hitler this man in like a mechanical body, trying to present himself as an intimidating figure. It was due to sheer virtue signaling and I honestly think you can't explain why else. New Order and Old Blood had so much potential that NC and Young Blood completely threw away in favor of modern politics. To be fair, the first two games of the franchise did involve a decent amount of political writing throughout it's story (as happens when discussing a war as controversial as World War 2), but it was far more nuanced and intelligent. It didn't preach down to its audience like the later sequels did.
To bring up the Klansmen scene, it's very unlikely that the Nazis would allow the group to exist, at least without core members who are Nazis, since it's basically a group that exists outside the regime. The Nazis removed several things that were considered traditionally German, like fencing clubs, because they were bond-forming groups that existed outside of the regime.

Indeed, it happened to a lot of games actually, a very sudden change in direction, either by executive mandate, consulting firm or subversion, it hit in a lot of places. Another series I think about this happened to was Shadow Warrior, the second game was phenomenal and had a fun ending, SW3 completely butchers everything the second game got right, characters included, lo and behold the developer went through a huge change and founding members were kicked out, replaced with ideologues in their place.
Eh it can happen unfortunately where the same developers just fumble the game so hard or try to redevelop it made through and it just turns out poor. Best example would be bioshock infinite which was original going to be a story of libertarianism and vox populism and you trying to escape a crumbling city in the sky which then became a tale of the horrors of evil white racism in the 1900s with weird multiverse crap. I personally agree, most of them were bad and forgettable, but there were some gems in there. But, unfortunately, was drowned out by stupid, idiotic politics.
Even in New Order there's little bits of humanity to the soldiers, in the first level after scaling the castle walls there's a commander you access from a secret passage he's giving a status report to Totenkopf, if you let the conversation go on long enough they actually discuss plans after the war and how much the officer is looking forward to going back home to his wife for example.
Even some of the guard banter feels so human. Like the guy complaining about chest pains because of the mould from uberkonkrete, but his buddy tells him not to say shit like that too loudly because that could be scene as criticising the regime.
New Order and Old Blood do more to humanize them than most serious World War 2 media in general does. Makes the way New Colossus turned out even worse.
Old Blood is brimming with it. The first scene with Rudi Yeager, the desk jockey is clearly soiling his pants because he knows if he messes up or pisses him off he'll be fed alive to the dogs, in fact just a couple steps before that scene a newcomer soldier is warned that by an officer who is his uncle. Two soldiers in the prisons debate about the paranormal activity, because one is a Roman Catholic and finds talk of the devil as horrible. Later on in the docks segment two Germans debate over grammar because one of them thinks for them to be the best race on Earth, they need to adhere to the proper grammar. Castle segment has two guys talking about their respect for Helga's determination to trek through Africa even with the aftereffects of polio. Escape section has a gag with two soldiers in a cave talking about the prison escape and then declaring "surely he won't get us here". The town section has multiple moments, the most notable being a guy talking about how his wife is leaving him or becoming more distant (I forgot the exact details) and it's revealed that he's an overthinker into existentialism. His friend naturally roasts him for it. More conversations go on, mostly about how they can't wait to finish this grave digging. The last section has some Germans talking about the zombie apocalypse now raging and one speculates that his comrade turned into a zombie simply because he wasn't faithful enough. Main villains Rudi Yeager and Helga von Schabbs are also humanized but not to the point that they're basically presented as "misunderstood" or cartoon villains, but people who chose to stand up to all odds while serving the worst regime imaginable. Rudi was abused by his uncle and his only friends were dogs, that's why even though he raises them to be man-eating killers he treats them like his babies. Helga is a polio survivor determined to stand up to the pressure from her superiors about the paranormal project her team is working on.

I never liked set's "jewish space laser supertech" material. The game treats the Germans likes cartoon villains who have no logical reason for hating their targets, and at the exact same time, says "no, actually, the Dat' Yichud *ARE* an underground Illuminati cabal with super tech that's been silently controlling the world for 1000s of years, and selfishly don't share their tech". This makes the Jewish group in the game live up to every stereotype and conspiracy theory about them, which his the *EXACT THING THAT CREATES NAZIS IN THE FIRST FUCKING PLACE* I ASSUME the logic in the writing was "The Germans wouldn't have won without the 'help' of the very people they were trying to destroy. How very ironic." The problem is, this gives genuine credence to the German arguments, but doesn't dare to suggest that. What would've been better was for Germany's targets to be truly helpless, showing that there WASN'T a legitimate reasoning for their hatred, making you rightly hate your enemies for harming true innocents. It creates the "New Guy" Effect - where a (typically left leaning) person makes a strawman, but is in such a deep echo chamber or ideological bubble, that the strawman disproves their argument or makes the argument of the strawman seem reasonable.. Making Set and the "SuperJew" faction be the way they are, that gives your enemies a genuine, real reason for being the way they are. This wouldn't be a problem if you humanized the Germans once in a great while, but they don't, and treat the regime as a 1-dimensional cartoon. If you're going to do this, you can't give credence to the arguments of the villain at all. to effectively write a villain, you must either: A: give the villain a human element that makes them endearing or likeable, with a genuine reason for their actions B Treat them like a flat, Saturday Morning 80s villain with no reason for their actions other than moustache twirling. You can't have both without making your writing come off as stupid.

The reason why games like metal gear get away with it is because the themes complement the anti war message and educate the player instead of saying "you're a fascist if you don't agree" games like wolfenstein 2 try to tell you. One of my favorite moments in New Colossus is when BJ has an argument with a bunch of Marxists. It was framed to be a back-and-forth of valid points from both sides, but pretty much everything that BJ argued was correct, whereas nearly everything the Marxists said was either misguided or downright wrong. BJ argued if the Marxists actually took practical action instead of protesting the war, maybe they wouldn’t be in their predicament. This is true because now the Marxists are having to fight the Nazis without an entire army backing them up. They waited until it was much more difficult to fight back. Meanwhile, Horton argues that the U.S. only got involved in the war to widen the pockets of the fat cats in Wall Street. If that was the case, then why did the U.S. declare war on Japan only after Pearl Harbor was bombed? Also, the U.S. never declared war on Germany. Germany declared war on the U.S.
Remember history is a lot of people's greatest weakness. Many people are completely ignorant about the other 4 theaters of WW2. Having to explain to people that the US makes 10x more money helping nations 'rebuild' or 'help' than actually going to war is a constant struggle. While not fighting, the US was essentially funding and arming the Allied forces, which in turn was what helped our financials. At the end of the war, 3/4ths of the USSR's miliitary vehicles were of US make and even their own Stalingrad was founded by an American engineer who spent time there helping them build their own forces before we entered the war. It's was a major reason why the Japanese bombed us, even though the man who proposed it was completely against the plan.
One note: The US bankrolled and made a ton of money off of the war before they ever got involved in the war officially. Germany was pretty vocal about this being problematic which resulted in the US using Canada as what was basically a proxy/middleman to handle it.
@@youknowwhoelsecantthinkofagood I believe that is what @uchytjes and I are stating. The US didn't go to war for money because we were already profited off of it. The US joined the war because a) we were attacked, b) we had a bunch of terrorities in the Pacific that the Japanese were after, c) the interconnected treaties made everything a mess (we just wanted Japan but Germany and later the rest of the Axis powers declared war on us) and d) we Americans are a vengeful bunch but glory when we can make it seem righteous.
@@sofakingimmature Yes, I know Pearl Harbor caused the US to go to war. But the Marxists here make it sound like they only joined because it would widen the pockets of those on Wall Street, even though wars are usually financially crippling. If the US was making money by exporting surplus overseas, then it would actually be more suspect if the country didn’t join the war and just kept profiteering off of the war in Europe whilst remaining neutral. That is what I’m saying.
I agree with a lot of the criticisms leveled against New Colossus, especially the tonal inconsistency. The part that really left me scratching my head, was when you had to find the secret compartment in the U-boat and while stealthing you listen to two starving soldiers that had been hiding for months and one of them is breaking down while the other tries to give him hope they´ll make it out alive, just for Blazkowicz to slaughter them moments later. The game gives you these glimpses at the enemies as ordinary people, just to discard that idea seconds later and kill them in a often gleeful manner, which made a lot of the characters come of as some seriously unhinged psychopaths, while the game lacks the introspection to even acknowledge it, like Spec Ops; The Line did. Edit:Also thanks to Loli for putting into words that strange disdain for Mustache-Mans portrail in the game I had, that I could never really verbalize.
Funny enough, with just a bit of tweaking to the writing. The tonal inconsistency could've actually worked if set up properly. Like, keep it so the resistance gets more and more brutal towards the Nazi's as the story goes on. At first it's understandable. They're backed into a corner and at risk of getting wiped out. But as the dust settles and breathing room is achieved. The crew doesn't slow down or refocus. Instead, the tactics and missions get more loud, violent, and careless. BJ and a few others are starting to realize this. Sure, they're inflicting casualties and destroying some expensive equipment here and there. But it's not actually hitting the enemy where it truly matters. The resistance is merely reacting and not thinking. The resistance is seeing red and somebody is going to suffer for Caroline's dishonorable death. But their hatred is blinding them to why they're overthrowing the Nazis in the first place. Just barely distinguishable from their oppressors. My pitch here is a little flawed. But I think you'll get where I'm going with this.
@@BrokenCornholio1537 But all of this would require introspection and some nuanced thinking. From the way the game was marketed and how keen the studio was to lean into controversy, the people that wrote this game don´t understand that a cause no matter it´s goal can be poisoned by the means employed to achieve it. They have nazis, nazis are evil, so just do to them whatevere you want, you can´t be bad, you are the good guys after all. What really bothers me is how those moments of humanization found their way into the game, was there an actually decent low-level writer surrounded by rabid ideologues? Does he need help? Does he have a gun to his head? Is his name Steve? I just can´t figure it out.
@@xyxxanx9810 Likely the opposite, the horrifying truth is that a lot of the writers, like many in the 80's-90's, WERE rapid "progressives" who had enough talent and wit to know how to write a compelling story while only occasionally slipping in a bit of their lopsided world view, to, as the romanian puts it, "put the carrot in the cupcake." as it were. Then trump got elected and suddenly, wit and nuance be damned, their "progressiveness" just came flooding right out. To these people, that man getting elected was like being there when the twin towers fell, or surviving the titanic. It was just the right kind of psychological trigger to make them lose all self-control and lose the ability to seperate their politics from their art. Its nothing new, people have been arguing for decades about the need to see everything from a progressive lens.
The writers were probably not intentionally trying to make the nazis soldiers sympathetic - they might have been trying to humiliate them, showing them to be weak and pathetic before you righteously killed them.
I'm just gonna point out that this is very much a part of The New Order and The Old Blood. Right from mission one of TNO there's a german officer bragging about how none of the americans made it onto the beach, only for you to walk up behind him and stab or shoot him as you please, and then they make the same joke again later in the level with an officer in Deathshead's castle. One standout example I recall from TOB is the literal grammar nazi exchange you can overhear at one point. From day one these games have played background conversations for both laughs and lore, TNC is not unique in this regard.

These regimes got popular by offering the easy and brutal solution to all the world's problems. They are still made of humans, run by humans, in service to achieving human interests and needs. Denying the humanity in the regime is denying all insight into why such a thing happens and how to prevent it from happening to your own. Ironically they depict the Nazis the same way the Nazis depicted the jews- as ugly, weak, disgusting worms that nevertheless control everything and pose an existential threat to all things good. Seriously doubt they were able to recognize the irony while breaking down in Trump hysteria tho
Between the 2016 election Covid I’m convinced these people were monsters all along. They were just looking for the state-sponsored excuse to be the bastards they always were inside. If you know one of these subhumans IRL never forget that their mask (so to speak) slipped and showed you what they really are
It reminds me of funny mustache man in Western media. He was portrayed as the most evil figure in history and this was reflected in all of our media despite our people or leaders having no problems with the Germans pre WW1 and right before WW1. That same media colossus was then used on Trump simply because her wasn't a part of the Uniparty club. We say first hand how easy the masses can be turned to vilify one man over mean tweets. The educational system now printing out morons intentionally helped with this too.
There’s a note in the first game about Engle or however the name is spelled. She was such a die hard nazi she had like 6 kids before or during her military career. So not only is she a competent well decorated officer but she’s so devoted to her cause she birthed 6 kids with no mention of a father or marriage. She quite literally gave her body to the cause as much as she could. That’s why she’s scary, she’s all in ride or die and she’s absolutely certain about it. She “knows” she’s right and can’t be reasoned or negotiated with. She’s an actual supernatural force of a person and ironically an actual strong woman.
@@Calvin_Coolage Honestly, I'd prefer Bubi as my father over my violent alcoholic druggy dad who done nothing for my family other than causing mayhem in the family during my early childhood and me not being able to get a passport as a child.
1:33:27 - about that, i just watched "Look Who's Back", despite being a black comedy, they actually portrayed funny mustache guy as a man out of his element, but a man who knows how to work so well with people. One of the great moment there was, being dragged in some late night show joke/skit, he effectively used uncomfortable silence to let the audience get to his level. Him pointing out in thought that feeble men do not know the power of silence, and are afraid of silence, like the antsy talk show host. It's funny because it's ridiculous, it's frightening because it explores the nature and charm of charismatic people, and it taught me to be very wary of individuals like him, of individuals who likes and knows how to push the masses for their personal agenda.
This movie is great. When I first watched it, I expected a goofy comedy (I watched it on Netflix), it was surprisingly thought-provoking and well-written. The dog thing was a bit of a contrivance for me, but overall, a good watch.
Around the time New Colossus came out, an FPS channel named Jarek The Gaming Dragon cited it as his Game of the Year, and even back then, I'm still baffled as to why. Then again, he also put a JPEG of Donald Trump onto a CoD WWII thumbnail and went out of his way to call out people that didn't like Bioshock Infinite as racist, so he seems to have a clear bias.
Bioshock Infinite isn't even a Bioshock game. It's such a complete departure from the previous 2 games. It's essentially just Call of Duty with a grappling hook before Call of Duty added a grappling hook. Can't forget the entire ending just being a it doesn't matter what you did before this because you're always a bad guy haha. Endless universes but somewhere Booker is always evil by the end.
@@coltonwilkie241 I remember playing Bioshock:Infinite for the first time. I dies twice somewhere at the beginning of the game cause I got stuck at a turret. I tried to deal with it like in previous bio/system shocks by using powers or another workaround to conserve ammo...just to notice that I have over 100 bullets for my pistol. I remember I paused the game, put hands on my neck and thought to myself "oh, it's THAT kind of game" and just played like it's CoD
Dead-on about how post-2016 media HAD to be Orange Man Bad and Conservatives Are Nazis commentaries; I remember how games that tried to NOT be political commentaries during that period were lambasted and their developers hung in effigy. Remember Cuphead and how game journos bitched about the game being "enjoyed by Nazis" and how the old-timey cartoon art style was actually a secret dogwhistle for Nazis because "old racist films were made in the same art style?"
The Cuphead stuff was pure unsubstantiated rage bait. No one was calling the game racist or how it was a secret dogwhistle. Some articles did talk about the history of (some of the) artstyle and how it was used in racist cartoons back then. But there was no one calling the game racist over it lol.
@@awsomebot1 That's called guilt by association. A favorite tactic of the so called woke corporate media these days is to smear reputations by these _oblique implications_ of whatever --ism or --phobia based on extremely tenuous, spurious association. In this case it's implying the game and/or its devs are racist by association; again bearing in mind the supposed association is extremely weak to the point of being ridiculous. *But there is literally zero other reason to mention racism at all other than implying guilt. Especially considering literally ALL cartoons of the era used that art style, from the most racist to the most innocent.* Point is, it's typical shitlib activist "journalism". They politicize everything, and from the far left perspective. Indeed as these "journalists" generally admit themselves, they consider it their duty to push The Message™ and use their platform to fight the evil far right --ist --phobe bogeymen they seem to see hiding under every rock (or within every line of code, lol). As I've come to expect from gaming outlets like Kotaku and their ilk these days. It's all so tiresome.
@@J.DeLaPoer No, they talked about it because it was interesting and it's worth discussing. Not even the usual suspects were calling the game racist on twitter etc. It's a reach for you to say that just because they bring it up, they're automatically implying X.
The whole 2016 election shit really shot this reboot in the foot. New Order was a decent start... and then New Colossus happened. DUDE, TRUMP'S AMERICA IS LIKE HITLER'S AMERICA. Most pearl-clutching reactionary shit ever.
The studio has only gotten worse since then too. Now there's some gender confused obese rainbow haired possible predator in charge of the Indiana Jones game.
Hitler's America was a nice place in New Colossus funnily enough. Replace the swastikas with American flags and it would look like idyllic 1950s American cities and towns.
All of it. Every single fucking piece of media had to have some kind of allegory/commentary on Trump, his policies, or current event. Even if it made no goddamn sense whatsoever. Oh and if anybody dare call out how shit, unoriginal, pathetic, or just how objectively incorrect it was. They'd be racist, sexist, whatever. Take your pick. I hate this era of politics...
Honestly yeah. It felt like nothing was free of the rot of political commentary. You wanted to watch a movie? BOOM commentary. Wanna play a game? BOOM commentary. Wanted to keep up with friends on social media? BOOM commentary. Honestly, just staying offline and talking to regular people was the best way to avoid it.
It's such a shame that The New Collosus was pure, destiled cringe and killed the franchise. Also as a Pole Im pissed that they retconned BJ into being a Jew. Blazkowicz was always stated to be a son of polish imigrants. It's like only jews are allowed to have power fantasy revenges against nazis. Also also - how is BJ blonde and blue eyed when his mother is a black haired Jewess and his father seems to have very dark hair too?
I don't mind BJ being partially Jewish (since there is meant to be a bit of an irony that he can infiltrate Nazi territory despite being part of two races they want extinct), but the way they handled his parents was strange. Firstly why would a Jewish woman marry an anti-semite? why would an anti-semite marry a Jew and have a Jewish son? And why do I get the feeling that the developers wrote BJ's dad as simply an stereotypical American redneck racist with nothing Polish about him except for his surname? If they wanted his dad to be a bully to show how BJ developed his fortitude fine, but why go out of their way to make him an American Nazi? It's like a forced attempt at making him "fighting their Nazis since childhood".
Personally, I think of only two reasons why they altered BJ's look this much: 1- They wanted an overall irony that the epitome of the Nazi Aryan image ideal, is a Jewish-born one-man killing machine against them. 2- To make J's scene hit harder on BJ personally. In the Wyatt Timeline of New Order. Otherwise, why change the darker haired look from the previous games? And yea, it makes even less sense when we see his parents in New Colossus. You scratch your head thinking: "Did those genes skip a generation?"
@@GideonRavenor712 i mean if both parents had those traits from an ancestor its possible, smaee with as an example an african american couple having a white child its rare but if both parents have some white in the recent family history and the child gets both recessive traits it can happen, but its extremely rare
I’m guessing that probably has something to do with the fact that the Holocaust is elevated above pretty much every other genocide that has ever happened in history just because the Nazis apparently intended to kill pretty much every Jew in existence as opposed to “some” of them. News flash: just because not “all” members of your group are slated to be wiped out by another group doesn’t mean that the ensuing atrocities don’t actually matter.
a nine hour shooting game with three hours worth of cutscenes and at the start you have to wait thirty minutes before you can shoot something. that alone is unforgivable
New Colossus two big issues. The first is they didn't have a villain they could lean on that was good enough to carry the game. Nootzi Hillary Clinton is not scary or a character that can carry a game as a villain. Anyone that starts the game and remembers that you back handed her jaw off. Then tossed her like a Loony Toons cartoon is not going to be afraid of her anymore. There is also the fact by the end of New Order you become a waking Nightmare to her. They should have just fully revived Hitler, or someone else completely different and stuck them in the spotlight. Death’s Head was from the research division. Nootzi Hillary Clinton was from the concentration camps. Pick another field like the economics department or war department and push them up to the front. I know Giancarlo Esposito and his type cast is in everything, but a cold non caring bureaucrat that was a by the numbers person would have been great for a villain. Instead of another crazy moron. The second was Doom had come out during development and you can clearly tell what levels were made BEFORE and AFTER Doom 2016. Doom 2016’s gameplay is designed around always moving. New Colossus DOES NOT HAVE THIS FEATURE. But the levels are designed as if THIS FEATURE EXISTS. YOUR GAME DOESN’T HAVE THIS GAMEPLAY FERATURE! STOP IT! As a result, the story is a dumpster fire and the combat is even worse.
yeah these games have a weird insistence on putting the villian in your face and having them monologue when I'd prefer they just do there damn job and I passively hear and learn about them that way instead of bs scenes where the hijack the game cause they want an emmy
I hate how they changed Anya in the sequel. Her relationship with BJ was indicative of how well they balanced each other: BJ didn't have all the brains,, but had allthe brawn, while Anya couldn't hold a gun, but was very educated. But New Colossus came out right around the time where media depiction of pregnant women fighting was seen as progressive. It was everywhere in comics, books, TV shows, and games, and I don't know why. It's just disgusting and irresponsible.
Not only that, but that bit of Anya saying she was getting horny from her pregnancy over the radio felt so disgustingly sleazy. Can the writers please keep their weird ass kinks to themselves for five fucking minutes?
Favorite part of the Ball of steel monolog is it's stupid on two level one it's just plain stupid. Two eveything said is exactly why Balls of Steel means bad ass. It's saying somone is so badass and thick skinned even what would be the most vulnerable part of their body is made of solid steel.
I hated Grace as a character. She was loud, mean, obnoxious, and just didn't fit in with what the story should've been. You don't go from talking about how you saw a boy's skin melt off from an atomic blast. To some weird ass monologue about how you hate the 'balls of steel' expression.
I HATED the part with the secret Jewish engineer society stuff. “OoOoooHh tHe NaZis oNly Won bEcaUse oF tHe jEwiSh sUprEme TeCHnoLogY” well then… why not use it against them in the first place… ? Or even after the bombs fell?! And the more you think about it the worse it gets.
not only that. but one of the N-zis main talking points about the Jews was that they didn't help Germany win WW1. So by giving the Jews all this fancy high-tech has unintentionally made the N-zis correct...big fail.
I never liked set's "jewish space laser supertech" material. The game treats the Germans likes cartoon villains who have no logical reason for hating their targets, and at the exact same time, says "no, actually, the Dat' Yichud **ARE** an underground Illuminati cabal with super tech that's been silently controlling the world for 1000s of years, and selfishly don't share their tech". This makes the Jewish group in the game live up to every stereotype and conspiracy theory about them, which his the **EXACT THING THAT CREATES NAZIS IN THE FIRST FUCKING PLACE** I ASSUME the logic in the writing was "The Germans wouldn't have won without the 'help' of the very people they were trying to destroy.
Since they were a secret society, it's likely that the average Jew in the Wolfenstein universe wouldn't have had a clue about their existence or their capabilities, and as to why the society didn't use their equipment to fight the Nazis during the war, they probably got detained before the Holocaust began. The Nazis in real life did exploit Jewish scientists like Einstein.
@@TheHylianJuggalo It's arguably worse than that, in the sense of 'not thinking things through'. The fundamental premise of the entire series is that the Nazis *could* have won, with just the right bits of supertech in their arsenal. And not only won, but transform into an interplanetary empire that lasts for generations. What it's saying, essentially, is that everything they wanted could have worked with the right tools. *But that's not how the war turned out.* They *did* have incredible technology. They *did* have wonder weapons. And none of it made a blind bit of difference because their goals and ideals were a deluded fantasy. Applying social Darwinism to your government and chain of command meant endless backstabbing and arse-covering up and down the hierarchy, with the added fun that the leadership could just have somebody shot if they drew their ire. Their 'unstoppable war machine' was nothing more than industrial-scale looting and enslavement of conquered territories, which left every place they invaded broken and destitute. Had they somehow come to some kind of peace treaty in charge of Europe, it would have collapsed in a couple of years as their Empire's lack of a functioning economy would have drained what remained of the treasure that hadn't been shoveled wholesale into the gaping maw of their war machine. A hunger that would be *immeasurably worse* by forcing them to adopt increasingly complex and expensive technologies for even basic equipment. These aren't the Nazis. These are what the Nazis *wished* they could be. This is a universe where their government was lethally effective. Where their army was every bid as powerful as the propaganda. *Where the trains actually run on time.* That despite being just as sociopathic and delusional as their historical counterparts, *it all works,* even better than any "Democratic" or "Socialist" government ever dreamed. That's a more dangerous illusion. One that probably never occurred to the developers, and to be clear, it was utterly essential to create a credible threat to oppose. But the more the games advanced the timeline, the more... disquieting it got.
@@TheHylianJuggalo If the story was internally consistent and you were fighting the [germans] in the first half because you blindly believed the [proper + uganda], and then after they're on their knees you learn the truth and then fight the [uncriticizable] in order to bring peace and prosperity, that would have been based.
the way to best summize the downfall of Wolfenstein is as such. They saw “Iron Sky” Ripped out all the comedy (it was a shitpost) and dated political banter and just kept the dated political stance without any irony.
My favourite thing that’s going to happen with things like wolfenstien TNC is that it’s going to be hard for future gamers to understand any references as time goes on. An example is try to watch movies and media that were anti bush in the early 2000s half the people their referencing you don’t know and lots of the things they claim would happen didn’t.
I think this trilogy encapsulates everything for the 2010s. You had the rise of old IPs being reinvigorated and treated seriously. New levels of brutality that wasn't shy to leave an impact on the player. Then just... the collapse. Either the nepotism started rolling in, or a single year broke everything and everyone, the gatekeeping wasn't held up enough. Good thing is that you can still play older games. You can always play older games.
Oddly enough, good description of the 2010s. Starts off with so much promise, then the venom starts to seep in and then it gets so Fucking awful, you can barely remember the good times until time has passed long enough.
Say that in ten years when the digital-only releases start disappearing and/or steam shuts down or commits an ideological purge. Cue that line from the speech from the end of the Dinosaur sitcom.
@@randomcenturion7264 man. Two-half of the 2010s almost feel like completely different decades. the early half was full of optimism, the future seemed great and things would only get better. ....and then the other half only feels like the beginning to an end. and now we are living in this insane clown world with no light at the end of the tunnel in sight.
The golden age of PC gaming was c1993 to c2013. It's all been downhill from there; moving at light speed since 2016 (along with the leftward moving of the Overton Window at lightspeed around the same time -- no coincidence). The 2009 Wolfenstein was the last decent one; and I still say RtCW is the best of the entire franchise. Between the cancer of "woke" ie; radical left ideologies invading everything and the cancer of the modern mainstream AAA development in general (loot boxes, DLC, microtransactions, pay-to-win, laziness, endless reboots/sequels/prequels instead of innovation and creativity, etc etc) I pretty much only play retro games and indie stuff nowadays. I don't feel like I'm missing much of any worth. I mean to give an example I've had more fun with the Rise of the Triad and SW: Dark Forces remasters, free Doom WADs, and my Nth replay of Deus Ex over the last few months than any big AAA title the mainstream has put out in years. Don't get me wrong the odd gem still exists, but it's getting harder and harder to find any new, big studio game that's both good and free of the woke virus (the latter usually precludes the former in itself).
Love how you combine earnest analysis, honest and actively constructive criticism, and a "how you could have made this trainwreck work". TAL is what game journos should have been.
@@thealphaincel1619 It was pretty decent for its time tbf, I wouldn't call it mid because barely any games were re-inventing the line in terms of shooting
@@johndodo2062I honestly didn't enjoy the shooting either. Enemy visibility was screwy and they turned the game into a stupid ass cover shooter. Even The New Order on higher difficulties let you go full Rambo at times whereas The New Colossus had you hiding behind cover most of the time even on Normal mode. Because of how much I hated Normal mode I didn't even bother trying the higher difficulties.
Really appreciate you pointing out my biggest flaw in New Colossus. It feels like someone trying to write '70s exploitation pulp, but they've never read or watched '70s pulp only heard people talk about it. In the same way people who find Tarantino movies as masterworks have never seen the movies Tarantino apes off of.
RTCW is still the best Wolfenstein game. TNO was some really good groundwork but the 2016 election happened and everything after that, both writing and design-wise, was dog water.
@@motherurck7542 It kind of accelerated the process that had been slow burning till that point. What else could the powers that be do when a dark horse candidate they assumed would never win...won?

The bit with the father could’ve been an absolute redemption arc for him where he could’ve had a last stand with his son and finally bonded with him. And ultimately sacrificing himself trying to protect his son, the only family has left because what father wouldn’t die to protect his own especially after everything he’s lost? That could’ve been a huge moment for BJ to see his father as something other than a man he feared but that deep down his father still cared about him . New Colossus was a monument of wasted potential.
They also could’ve made the reunion something like his father reasons his harsh ways made BJ the man he is now, that being so cruel to him pushed him to become strong, and maybe include something where he feels intense regret for selling BJ’s mother to the Nazis and admits that he was overwhelmed by fear and now hates himself and even begs BJ for forgiveness for everything, trying to mend things by giving him his mother’s ring, saying that it should go to a woman with a worthy husband. Then have the final stand where he proudly goes out in a blaze of glory while cursing the Nazis, finally redeeming himself to his son.
The note regarding abuse being a common theme. Remember Adolf's childhood. He was abused by his father as well. In another life BJ could have been a dangerous tyrant in his own right but the writers aren't brave enough to explore this.
Everything about Adolf's life can be summed up as “and then it got worse” Absolutely every bad thing that could happen to him, happened, as if the universe itself was setting him up to become the evil monster he was. To me, that is what makes him so terrifying. That anyone could have become like him if enough shit goes wrong for someone, something I wish more stories would focus on.

I was on board with this game until we met up with Grace , for some reason B.J. had to prove himself to her ? The dude captured the flagship of the Uboat fleet which had nuclear ammo , he went to the moon , killed everyone there BY HIMSELF and came back like it was nothing , he destroyed the London Monitor the giant robot that ended all resistance in London , he went to a concentration camp and ended up freeing the prisoners , he assaulted deatheads compound and managed to kill the evil scientist that was building all of the crazy robots the nazis had. But for some reason that very same dude had to show to her that he still has a fighting spirit like wtf ?
This franchise had so much potential after New Order and Old Blood... Then they fucked it so hard they might as well have taken it out back and gave it the treatment of BJ's dog.
true. it could have easily become one of the best trilogy in all of gaming if it wasn't for the outbreak of Trump-derangement syndrome that hit the entertainment media like the black plague in Europe.
The whole "Punch a Nasal" campaign ended my desire to play New Colussus even though I liked New Order and Old Blood. These days, we know exactly what they mean when they call someone a fan member of the Austrian painter.
Unexpected Kirsche cameo, but welcome I dunno, the whole reboot trilogy never clicked with me. I'm kind of a history autist so there's just simply no way my mind could turn off to accept the absolute exponentially infinitesimal number of factors that would need to go in the Nazis favor to have a conquest of anything beyond Europe, already a stretch at that - world domination simply too far. Even if one man had developed wunderwaffen, they simply couldn't get the materials and industrial capacity to get those out in any numbers to turn the tide, let alone conquer the world. I guess Star Trek Enterprise was slightly more real in that stranded on earth aliens who wanna fuck up the timeline help advance several critical technologies, but the show still kept things in the bound of what was possible even with preventing key events from happening knowing the future, and alien schizotech bolted onto 194x stuff - the Nazis only had a toehold in North America, and were not making headway, and they hadn't won totally in the USSR either, with the remnant still large Red Army regrouping in Siberia. Even the time machine the aliens get to build as thanks for their help is still restricted to trying to make schizo futuretech work on incredibly old (by their standards) equipment. Like yeah, I get the characters are a part of the first, but the worldbuilding just threw my mind out of whack. And a lot of stuff was just more for filling a blank (causing more blanks - so the Nazis just totally surprise win over a victorious Japan somehow in one day?), to just nonsensical snark (the US atomic bombing thing being a flipped version of a common and sensical argument to why dropping the bombs on Japan was morally correct - it being flipped makes no sense, no America wouldn't surrender after one atomic bomb, no America is not a densely packed island nation whose infrastructure had already been destroyed, no it doesn't make sense as Germany was far behind in atomic weapons in the first place). Yeah I get there's a place for social commentary or bending the rules of reality or how things work in our minds to make a game, but honestly, W2/Spear of Destiny was more one could suspend their sense of disbelief than even the first in the nuTrilogy. And RTCW more than that. The paranormal elements of Wolfenstein were picked for a reason - its easier for the brain to accept Germany wins WW2 by unleashing ghosts and zombies to turn back the tide than Germany conquers the entire world because they leaned into SCIENCE (and Jewish secret societies) harder.
Honestly the atom bomb thing was silly. Are you gonna look me in the eyes and tell me "Yeah AMERICANS gave up at a show of force"?! Americans of all fething people see that sh1t as a rallying call! See: Pearl Harbor. Nuking a city would just make America fight that much harder and way meaner to boot.
As a fellow history autist, can I just add the fact that germany for the entire war relied on HORSES to supply its army, and also the fact that hitler if he got a single whiff of the di u chad or whatever its called tech was jewish wouldve shut the project down anyways? Like if we’re being realistic wolfenstien the reboot series wouldve realistically been the cold war but instead its the US and USSR searching for old whatever their called tech and reverse engineering the nazi tech, yeah… Also I’ma just add this, the main reason hiroshima and nagaski were chosen by the USAAC to be nuked was because they were the only semi important cities that their nuke couldve feasibly destroyed large chunk of because nukes until like the 70s were small low yield tactical nukes.
This video depressed me, I always used to watch extra credits for their history videos cuz they were fun and well animated. I had no idea the rest of their channel was piss poor takes on the state of the world and media. Rest of the video is fantastic as always, though.
Welcome to the club, friend. I used to love their content so much as a teen but the straw for me was their "Bam! You're a ****!" video. The part where they actually suggested that Orcs were synonymous with black people (I am black myself) genuinely infuriated me! When did westerners suddenly decide to infuse toxic identity politics into everything? I am a fantasy fan and never saw myself as an Orc or felt victimized.
@@orboakin8074 I'm white and for whatever it's worth, the only fictional aliens that reminded me of black people were Skid McMarx from Ratchet and Clank (reminds me of an in-law who's from Trinidad), and Ashoka Tano from The Clone Wars (she always looked a bit Afro in the face, so I wasn't surprised when Roasrio Dawson ended up playing her).
Their history content is also pretty shallow. It's not wrong but it's just surface level stuff that they cover. Overly Sarcastic Productions is much, much lower production value and manages much more in this regard
They really blew the opportunity to kill Hitler, and place his head into a robot that had chaingun arms like the original game. It would have made a good contrast to how BJ lost his head. Instead we get a lousy ending in 2. How can you mess that up so badly?
I hate new collosus more because it uses it's story to shield itself from criticism. Ignoring the story the game just flat out sucks. It removes eveything great about New order gameplay wise. New order felt like a direct response to what FPS games were becoming hide behind chest high wall wait for shooting to stop pop out shoot repeat. New collosus brings that back especially on harder difficulty but without a proper cover mechanic making the whole things feel awkward and slow.
I wouldn't say the 2009 game is non-canon, since The New Order does mention key events from it. Deathshead's face for instance is the result of the zeppelin crash at the end of Wolf '09 and Caroline Becker's supposed death is brought up in The New Order, mentions punching Hans Grosse and floating towards a light. Both events occur in Wolfenstein '09. So, despite the direction the reboot took, it's still in continuity with both RTCW and Wolfenstein '09. I like to call it the Deathshead or Totenkopf Trilogy. Starting in RTCW continuing in Wolf '09 and finally the final showdown in TNO. When I first played TNO back in 2014 I felt the gravity of the final battle, since I was dealing with someone that had evaded us since 2001. Not sure if anyone else felt that, but there you go. Really sucks that you can't buy it anymore. But if you can't buy, you can't really steal it, either, right?
What people seem to forget, is that a reboot doesn't necessarily mean that everything that happened in the previous timeline is completely thrown out the window, with the exception experiencing things leading to the Allies winning the war it can easily be presumed that the MachineGames version of BJ went through everything that the previous version of BJ has went through, it's an alternate universe but that doesn't mean the timeline has to diverge from the beginning of the whole story (meaning that a story can be canon to two timelines, for instance the Lucas Star Wars movies are canon in both the old EU and the Disney universe). Funny thing is that I've recently been playing the 2009 Wolfenstein and I immediately noticed that version of BJ bearing a striking resemblance to the one in The New Order with the exception of the darker hair, even his voice actor sounds a bit like Brian Bloom.
Man, thank god for that whiny twitter user and his fart sniffers. I had forgotten about your channel and how golden your vids were. Keep up the good work!
I've never liked the twist of the hidden jewish engineers creating the advanced technology. It undermines the villains, and worst yet is how they use that going forward.
It also gives the Germans petty points despite being treated like cartoon villains "The jews ARE an underground Illuminati cabal and don't share their technology with the world"
I never liked set's "jewish space laser supertech" material. You can't have both without making your writing come off as stupid.
altering it to be ancient jewish supertech that the jews have not have access for 2000 years would work better. Still a flawed idea but it could work better than the original.

It's kind of impressive that a reimagining of a classic Id series could crash and burn so quickly and only after 1 game. Young Blood was like the shit cherry on the top of the diarrhea cake. There was a point they should've toned things down for New Colossus, but nope, they kept going with things nobody wanted. Oh well, at least Return to Castle Wolfenstein is still exists.

It's like you put into words why I hated everything that wasn't New Order or Old Blood. Return to Castle Wolfenstein still the best Wolfenstein game. They should make a HD remake of that, seriously.
replaying The New Order recently made me realize how much I love the ability to peak and lean around corners, and now I lament every FPS that lacks this mechanic
Been looking forward to this one's full release. Unlike these games, especially New Colossus, you did not disappoint with this review Loli. It really is unfortunate when you see the potential these games had. The little scenes in Roswell with the KKK members trying to speak German, the little kid and his mother correcting him using English instead of German, and the one lady who tries to impress an SS officer only to end up insulting him and possibly ending up on a list.
Honestly, I'm surprised the 3rd Wolfenstein game had Hilter killed off-screen. You would think that because of how hyper-progressive that game was, it would give you the chance to kill off the man responsible for World War 2, yet this reboot never allowed you to do it yourself.
@@chaosinc.382 No its not, the world you are in the Nazis have won, Hitler is now an aging dictator but the power doesnt lie with him anymore. Killing Hitler at this point in time is not a strategic win but more symbolic. And even if you did kill Hitler the nazi propaganda would hide this anyway. The game tells you all this in context to the story
It really hurts cuz its SO close to being one of my favorite fps games of all time, the pieces were there, if your theory of it being torn apart and pieced together is true, that dream version of this game probably existed, or at least was alot better then what we got This is such a well put together video, and i hope you have more franchises you love to make more videos on in this style
I guess it was for the best that I didn’t buy New Colossus. I really liked New Order and it’s such a tragedy the sequel games fall harder then the Second Reich.
Another fun bit of gaming knowledge for you all to consume: Games are being built worse due to labor laws thanks to the gig economy. You see, most studios shifted over to contractors as that makes sense. Hire a talent for a game, then let the contract expire, and everyone wins. However, then the gig economy exploded in the mid 2010s. A ton of companies made money off of contractors, and that led to a rather insane law; after three years as a contractor, the contractor is treated as a full time employee for all intents and purposes. Now, would a company admit defeat, hire on a core of developers and use contractors as sort of polish up men to clean up the mess? Of course not, those DEI degrees in those management positions cannot think too much or they ruin the ESG score. Thus the current modern day gaming situation. DEI management trying to force specialists to do a full 3 years worth of work within a year (it takes time to spin someone up, and to learn the in house technology. Plus when the contractor knows he will be let go no matter what, he is not going to do his best.) Any game that is looking to be produce, better be finished within a year or it becomes a terrible game of telephone with each set of developers trying and failing to work with what is there, while Bridge yells at them for not being gay enough.
Yep. Old game development workplaces were like family. Everyone knew each other, got along and had fun. Now, you just bring no-name talents for a year and throw them out before they can learn anything or fully integrate themselves into the team.
Kinda wild that youre see workers be systematically abused through the gig economy that offer little benefits... and then you conclude it's the woke's fault. Lol.

*Sigh* .... Yeah, I pretty much agree with this video. Nothing much to say from me, honestly. Here, have a like. Your video is added to my favorites. I'm likely gonna fall asleep to this video some nights too. All I gotta day is yeah, I think New Order started off with a concept that was really strong for this series and New Colossus blundered it all from there. I bought New Order back in 2014 thinking this was gonna be the start if something strong and legendary. You can imagine how depressingly wrong I felt when I finally played New Colossus.
Similar experience. New Order was fantastic, brutalist dystopia, but that bit of rage and hope that even with all this impossible evil, you can still fight for a better tomorrow...even if we can't see it. Then New Colossus came along and oh boy oh boy, I suddenly felt everything Wyatt/Fergus felt. I legit felt like, "I used to fight with legends, now I'm stuck with THIS." The New Colossus wasn't as good as The New Order, but there have been worse successors, it wasn't as bad as say Metal Gear Solid 4, which ramped up the feminism/wokeness/misandry, a huge chunk of the game was facing repetitive boss fights against these new villains who were all boring cookie cutter copies of each other, and it relied way too much on fan service referencing the previous games (mainly the first) instead of charting it's own new course (to the point of bringing back a deceased villain from the first game out of nowhere). Or Halo 5, in which every level was vapid/boring without any of the epic battles or apocalyptic vibes the franchise was known for, and took a huge step back from the increased quality in character writing that started in ODST and continued through Halo Reach and Halo 4.

Exactly.

Almost like a certain consulting agency was brought on and THEY dictated how to make the game "more inclusive and diverse".
Edit: Good games existed in those four years, but were mainly overtaken by shitty political bullshit.

This makes the Jewish group in the game live up to every stereotype and conspiracy theory about them, which his the *EXACT THING THAT CREATES NAZIS IN THE FIRST FUCKING PLACE*
I ASSUME the logic in the writing was "The Germans wouldn't have won without the 'help' of the very people they were trying to destroy. How very ironic."
The problem is, this gives genuine credence to the German arguments, but doesn't dare to suggest that.
If you're going to do this, you can't give credence to the arguments of the villain at all. to effectively write a villain, you must either:
A: give the villain a human element that makes them endearing or likeable, with a genuine reason for their actions
B Treat them like a flat, Saturday Morning 80s villain with no reason for their actions other than moustache twirling.
You can't have both without making your writing come off as stupid.
@@surprisedchar2458 of course you can. Just look at metal gear, bioshock, deus ex,disco elysium or fallout, Those are all amazing franchises. I'm just saying that if a game or movie is taking jabs at donald trump or talks about stuff that's happening in current year instead of the story focusing on its own points it's trying to tell, then it's going to be outdated years after. The reason why games like metal gear get away with it is because the themes complement the anti war message and educate the player instead of saying "you're a fascist if you don't agree" games like wolfenstein 2 try to tell you. When you write a political story you have to be sensible about it and put your own political bias aside to tell a great one.
The tone shift from TNO to TNC really made me uncomfortable. How do you go from a game with an unironic, actually scary concentration camp level, to presenting the Nazi's being more like Cobra than an actual terrifying force?
Also, '09 Wolfenstein can still technically be played, since it's classified as abandonware and available on most abandonware archive websites.

@@uchytjes10 Yes, but if the US was only in it for the money, then why would they enter the war? Wars tend to cripple countries financially.

Personally, I think of only two reasons why they altered BJ's look this much:
1- They wanted an overall irony that the epitome of the Nazi Aryan image ideal, is a Jewish-born one-man killing machine against them.
2- To make J's scene hit harder on BJ personally. In the Wyatt Timeline of New Order.

The problem is these games forget every NSDAP member besides the Austrian painter.

If you're going to do this, you can't give credence to the arguments of the villain at all. to effectively write a villain, you must either:
A: give the villain a human element that makes them endearing or likeable, with a genuine reason for their actions
B Treat them like a flat, Saturday Morning 80s villain with no reason for their actions other than moustache twirling.
You can't have both without making your writing come off as stupid.
*But that's not how the war turned out.*
They *did* have incredible technology.

@@williamfrank962 Interesting, what were some predictions in anti bush films that never came to fruition?
I think this trilogy encapsulates everything for the 2010s. You had the rise of old IPs being reinvigorated and treated seriously. New levels of brutality that wasn't shy to leave an impact on the player. Then just... the collapse. Either the nepotism started rolling in, or a single year broke everything and everyone, the gatekeeping wasn't held up enough.
Good thing is that you can still play older games. You can always play older games.
You can't always play older games. Go try to play Wolfebstein 2009. Lol.
Oddly enough, good description of the 2010s. Starts off with so much promise, then the venom starts to seep in and then it gets so Fucking awful, you can barely remember the good times until time has passed long enough.

I love when people making stuff try to be "inclusive" or "progressive" but their brilliant idea is to make the character a stereotype.

Can you explain a little? I’m diving into the “rabbi hole”
The swedes that made the game obviously didn't have father figures.
The whole dad bit felt like one of the writers was extremely mad at their dad for voting Trump
100% agreed
Abusive people do not care about their children though, if they did then they would not abuse their children
The note regarding abuse being a common theme. Remember Adolf's childhood. He was abused by his father as well. In another life BJ could have been a dangerous tyrant in his own right but the writers aren't brave enough to explore this.
Hitler was not abused by his father. His childhood wasn't idyllic or perfect, but it was pretty damn comfortable.

I dunno, the whole reboot trilogy never clicked with me.

Welcome to the club, friend. I used to love their content so much as a teen but the straw for me was their "Bam! You're a ****!" video. The part where they actually suggested that Orcs were synonymous with black people (I am black myself) genuinely infuriated me!

The New Order was the peak for Wolfenstein alongside The Old Blood but it went downhill and never recovered.
Yep that court level is criminal game design for a reason
If that's the case, it makes for a pretty lousy shield.
I have no regrets for playing on the easiest difficulty for that game
Thanks for the very cool playthrough idea, I’m definitely trying this out soon

Another fun bit of gaming knowledge for you all to consume:
Games are being built worse due to labor laws thanks to the gig economy.
Damn, this really does clear a lot things up. It's sad but a lot of things make sense now
Lol.
Wasnt this why Halo Infinite was such a trashfire?
@@chaosinc.382 Yeah, it was. They had even worse though since they used contractors to build not only the game, but the new game engine itself.
You want to know a games story that was really affected by the 2016 Trump election and was even worse?
Life is Strange 2.
To be fair, Life is Strange was already a messy franchise, even before then.

LIS2 was so bad. Some guy on anon summed it up as: "imagine, a game made by Frenchies using American politics as a platform, unintentionally portraying hispanics as violent thugs and literal retards."
If twitter glue-eaters think it's bat, it has to be good.
They didn't even watch the video they literally calling him a nazi
I said it in the live chat, I'll say it here: If you want a good example of a old dictator with dementia who is still knowledgeable and a threat, capable of thinking 10 steps ahead, look at the X-Factor Investigations comic when they dealt with Doctor Doom in the future. He was of Earth-1191 if you wanted to look up some info.
Victor von Doom did nothing wrong
New Colossus fucking sucked. Even from the gameplay stand point, it was so short and the level design was such a cluster fuck
Glad I'm not the only person who felt this way. The level design was terrible.
I legit felt like, "I used to fight with legends, now I'm stuck with THIS." And then Young Blood made me feel I was going from one shitty future to another.
@@randomcenturion7264 Damn straight.

i remember seeing facebook advertisements for the 2nd game on facebook saying "make america nazi free again" after trump got elected. it was so cringe. i still played the game just to see and the writing was 10x worse than the previous games as expected.
Desk Ketchup Bostonian was not someone I was expecting to see in the vid.
It should be illegal to have such a strong original and then a complete trashfire of a sequel. I call this the "legend of korra" effect.

The New Colossus wasn't as good as The New Order, but there have been worse successors, it wasn't as bad as say Metal Gear Solid 4, which ramped up the feminism/wokeness/misandry, a huge chunk of the game was facing repetitive boss fights against these new villains who were all boring cookie cutter copies of each other, and it relied way too much on fan service referencing the previous games (mainly the first) instead of charting it's own new course (to the point of bringing back a deceased villain from the first game out of nowhere). Or Halo 5, in which every level was vapid/boring without any of the epic battles or apocalyptic vibes the franchise was known for, and took a huge step back from the increased quality in character writing that started in ODST and continued through Halo Reach and Halo 4.
