How ASUS scams their 2023 laptop customers

  • The specs of your laptop might be completely different from what you were told as ASUS keeps falling deeper into fraud territory.
Basically I was disappointed that my MiniLED laptop screen looks horrible, then eventually found out that it wasn't even MiniLED to begin with.

Some people might say in the grand scheme of things, HDR doesn't really matter to them or whatever. No big deal. But I agree with you it's beside the point. It's the practice. The point is the ethics and the honesty, or lack thereof, being shown by Asus. This is the kind of practice that a company could, and probably should, get sued for. Laptops ain't cheap. You better be getting what you're paying for. False advertising to me = theft.

Big tech(s) with reputable and prestigious brand image can do whatever they want to consumers. Maybe they will blink if it is an order of thousands of units from a company/university. Other than that, don't even try.

Always check the NITS brightness specs, because they'll be different. 1100 NITS means miniLED monitor. 500 NITS means regular IPS display. Nebula marketing ploy is shady for sure, because they're purposefully calling all their 2023 displays 'Nebula' to mislead consumers. But they cant lie about the actual specs of the machine inside the box

    • @Niberspace

    • @rajatchaudhuri
      @rajatchaudhuri 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

1100 NITS of brightness only works in HDR profile and only to some specific areas where the image or video output is very bright. Let’s say the moon in the dark sky. Depending on how much area is covered by the moon on the whole screen the brightness will increase. If the moon is visible on the whole screen then the brightness from the moon would be around. 400-500 nits. But if the moon is visible only in an inch square area of the screen then it might give you upto 1100 nits. That’s why it is called HDR 1000, because it works only while using HDR mode. Not whole screen will give 1100 nits of brightness. The screen only gives power to a specific area where the colour range is at brightest to provide dynamic range between brighter and darker areas.

i just received my first gaming laptop today. When I was shopping around, I noticed that it was confusing. So many variations. What I learned was that I had to pay attention to the full model number and check the specs at the Asus Rog site. There, I would see exactly what I was getting. I would blame the seller for describing it incorrectly cause its really not that difficult to search the model number and see exactly what youre getting. The seller probably did that on purpose, to increase sales.

Back in 2007 I bought ASUS parts for a new PC I was building, because I heard good theings about ASUS. I even went and bought a 17" ASUS laptop to game on when I travelled. All those parts and the laptop were great and they lasted me so many years without problems. In 2020 I bought an ASUS A15 from a guy and wondered why he hadn't kept the laptop longer than a few months. Then I saw the screen and saw how just awful it is. I kept the laptop but gamed mostly on my main PC anyway. Later I moved and needed a new laptop and bought a 2022 A15 and noticed that the build quality had become even worse than the 2020 A15. The new screen was much much better though and the specs were ok, so I kept it. After 4 months of light gaming the screen just turned off while I was typing on the laptop. Hard reset didn't help so now I have packaged it up and sending it in for repair, but after seeing your video, I am now afraid I will only get it back next year! Writing this in August 2023. I used to be 'almost' Asus exclusive, for PC components, and if in the market, I probably would have been into their Laptops too. I did a lot of research into this laptop before I bought it, I noticed some irregularities in that I couldn't find the hdr 4090 version anywhere in the uk and ended up getting it shipped from America, the only issue now being I have an American keyboard that has a few buttons in different for example the @ sign is on the number 2 instead of just above the right shift key and it has a $ sign and no pound sign, in my opinion not a major turn off, it does take some getting used to though.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I had the laptop for 4 days before it developed a major fault (a boot loop) I sent it to the repair centre in the uk and it had a dodgy motherboard, received it back about 2.5 weeks later, now works perfectly.

Asus systems have terrible build quality in my opinion. I also have to strongly agree with that and made enough own experiences from repairing stuff. ( broken hinges, many driver issues, excessive backlight bleed, dead pixels, rips and tears in the keyboard deck, backpanels flexing enough to block spinning fans, DoA incidents (many faulty motherboards with shortcircuits due to cheap components blowing up , components being wrongly aligned on the board from assembly...) ) It really is horrendous !!! And while coil whine is ok to a certain extent, the coil whine you demonstrated can hint at failing components. (usually components involved in voltage regulation)

Yeah I knew that in general in Australia NZ we get the lower spec screen but wasn’t a deal breaker, ROG G14. I like the style of the Asus laptops and the performance specs they have on price are good if you get a good one.
My Asus plugs into a TV so the screen is rarely on. I don’t have the fan noise problem but your experience of after-sales support was woeful, they should have replaced it in full, with the high spec screen. It is a worry hope my machine stay good touch wood.
They do run hot, but apparently that is fine these days. I will see in a few years time if true or die from overclocking heat. But if it lasts a few years that will be fine as gaming machines generally only last that long due to game specs requiring faster machines.
Lastly I do agree Asus needs to improve on their deceitful sale tactics, make it clearer what they are selling and better support if you get a lemon. It only ruins their reputation in the long run. Great posting you experience I hope it gets them to change.

That's what spec sheets are for, on Asus website I see the configurations clearly laid out. There are codes for each configuration to differentiate them. This practice is super old and super common.
As far as I understand Asus doesn't have eshops in most countries, they sell to third parties who sell to users. It is those third parties that choose the configuration to sell for their region, and it is those third parties that list the configurations on their website or store, not Asus. Most Laptop manufacturers do this.
It sucks that you didn't get the configuration you wanted, but you are responsible to check what you are buying. With that said you are absolutely in your right to complain about sellers who don't list the correct specs or not the complete specs.

I've been a big fan of ROG series for some years, got a couple of their devices . I've been waiting to get a new rtx 40x rog thingn since their CES announcement the start of this year. Now nearly half of a year passed, you can see all all kinds of the propaganda or reviews from YT and tech sites, but there's no large scale sale or access to these 40x products, clearly there's something wrong in the production line.

Not sure what you're implying though, this one has that 40x and it's crazy fast. It's not the graphics cards fault that ASUS lied about the monitor. However if you're referring to the coil whine then yes, though sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one who cares, as several replies told me "just put on headphones!"

HP do the same thing! In the US, most HP "business" laptops get beautiful 500nit 100% sRGB panels, while in the UK they sell the same laptop with 250nit panels with 45% NTSC (and the same laptop is also more expensive in the UK). This is one of the reasons why I never buy HP laptops any more.

@@Niberspace Lenovo were pretty bad a few years back - it was literally a lottery. I used to order ThinkPads for new employees - I'd sometimes order the same laptop a couple of weeks apart, one would come with a gorgeous IPS display, another would come with a TFT panel (which you'd have to be sitting straight in front of in order to see anything on the screen). Lenovo are much better these days - they clearly give you the option to choose which panel you want now (and charge you accordingly).

Asus clearly differentiate between Nebula HDR and regular Nebula dispays on their website. At least on the promo video i saw. And the regular Nebula is still a very decient screen. The HDR is fitted to the high end scar only while the regular Nebula is fitted to the midrange strix. I also seen lower end G laptops without the Nebula display. About the fan noise theres not much you can do about it. From what i hear all gaming laptops suffer from it. But all things taken into account i still think the 2023 Asus G is the most cost effective gaming laptop there is

it is not limited to specific markets
if you visit ROG Strix Scar 16 page for different countries you can see that some of them have up to four models
    1. IPS with no OS
    2. MiniLED with Windows Home
    3. IPS with Windows Home
    4. IPS with Windows Pro
seems to me miniled versions were in limited supply to begin with, were sold out quick and the majority or these laptops are IPS
it was pretty scammy for asus to market this laptop as a miniled laptop and nowhere did they mention that only some models have miniled
given the hype no wonder everyone just assumes that strix scar 16 equals miniled just to be hugely disappointed later

This is downright crazy. I had a lot of trust in ASUS because I used an Old Vivobook that I purchased in 2012 and used it until 2019 as my main work computer, after which I switched to a ThinkPad. It never caused any trouble except that the battery died out eventually. In my mind, it's been always a solid company until I stumbled upon this video. So thanks for bringing this up.
I have been strongly considering a ROG laptop for my new gaming laptop but I've got to look elsewhere.
