Seriously, it's almost 2018. Why do people still argue Peter vs Phil in Genesis? They're both vintage at this point and both represent a different era of music, who even cares anymore? lol
+JPMcFly1985Two #FeelTheBern people still argue because Pete's era was creative, had complex lyrics and had an unique sound. Abacab onwards loss all this to create more simpler and more commercial music. Genesis is not a 80s pop party band. When they made songs like Home By The Sea and Domino they kept in spirit with the 70s whilst still finding a new identity but then they would make something awful like Throwing It All Away or I Can't Dance.
Gabriel was more experimental true, though I'm more familiar with his solo music. I do think 80s Genesis still had a more prog rock and slightly more hard rock sound than Phil solo (which was pure pop or soft rock), though I guess the ballads like "Throwing it All Away" could easily be Phil solo songs too. I think all 80s music was about being very pop and catchy and getting it to be on MTV, so it lost some of the experimental edge the 60s and 70s had.
