One of my clearest memories as a child is sitting on my dad's lap watching this video and being absolutely terrified of the puppets.
THANK YOU! Just showed it to my husband, we are late 30’s now, he had the same look I had all those years ago.
Same. I remember seeing it in tv as child. Terrified of the dolls and everything ... but I remember this one thanks to this
I was six when this video came out and the guy eating his tongue in a hotdog bun has haunted my whole life. 😂

Superman, where are you now? When every thing's gone wrong somehow?
Literally ahead of its time. As an 80's kid, I didn't think we were in a land of confusion. Now, I think this song applies more than ever!
Oh yeah we weren't in a land of confusion in the 80s. 80s and 90s were great! I hate the way the world is today
This video turned out to look like a prophetic model about the coming of the modern online AI-driven, algorithm, President Deepfake, media machine of mass destruction - it terrified me as a kid but the world we live in now that I'm older is far worse...
Yea they thought Regan seemed old. Wonder what they would think of old Joe.
I bet 95% of the kids don't even know the cover of this jam wasn't original lol

At 2:16 Phil is singing in the forefront but during the group back-up part he also pops up from the drums. Kinda funny to acknowledge Phil would sing *while* playing the drums, which is not easy in any sense of the term.
The puppet of Phil used on the drums was their first generation that turned out poorly so it was used further away from the camera. The one in the foreground was their second attempt which turned out much better.

A fantastic demonstration of why nobody should pay attention to celebrity political opinion. This is a response to Pershing missiles being deployed in West Germany. This song speaks more truth today than ever before despite its age.

Oh Superman where are u now ? When everything gone wrong somehow
yes
The song doesn't speak of today, it rejects today and longs for "the future". This song is just as nihilistic as the power structure it's writers think they understand.

It's really depressing that we live in an era where this song is relatable
Let's hope Biden don't need life alert....
But wouldn't this be every era since the beginning of time?
Even more so today.
The bridge starting at 2:57 hits hard nowadays. There was indeed a time long ago where life was so much better.
It was happening way before the 80's. The Cuban Missile Crisis kicked things off in 1962, and the threat really hasn't calmed down much since.

absolutely
For as long as human beings exist, this song will be relevant, hell, ANY beings for that matter. Carnage is the nature of all species, most all living species are dangerously primitive and shall remain that way. We’ll almost definitely never exist for long enough as a species to genuinely safeguard ourselves against ourselves, but as this song asks: why don’t we all stop fighting, and make this a place worth living in? These are the hands we’re given after all, and we can do nearly anything with them, not just use them to engage in conflict.
Radio stations should blast this master piece all over the world at the same time to get this message out or what some radio stations have done in the past, to play the song on repeat for days on end.

How absolutely ironic this song is to present 2024! Clearly “Superman, where are you now?”
His name is Clark Kent. His power isn't strength or flight or even laser vision. Its to show us how a strong man or woman uses power, to serve the people. Clark Kent lives in the service of others, and that's his power. That's what makes him a Super-Man. We can't ask for help, we have to help others.

When the sun was shining
And all the stars were bright all through the night
In the wake up this madness, as I held you tight

Yup! This song is truly relevant in 2022!
This video scared the shit out of me when I was little, but now it rocks.
History repeats itself! Again and again! One day you would expect a generation to learn from it!
They're too busy burning the USA flag 🇺🇸 & demanding Civil War monuments be torn down...alongside hitting the mainstream media feederbar in a panic over a virus.
THAT'S WHY History will repeat itself🤔
@@maestroaxeman The only repeate here is the blind ignorance and stupid irresponsebility, of the idiots stuck in lies and bullshit... who lack the mental capasity and knowledge to see reality as it is, and not what some outdated narrsesist hatespewer told them it should be
@@maestroaxeman i hope you're referring to the ones who should be teaching and not the ones learning.
(1) Confederate monuments confer undue dignity on a faction that fought to preserve the institution of slavery and the ethos of white supremacy that underlays it.
(2) Alexander Stephens, VP of the CSA, famously gave the “Cornerstone Speech” in which he announced that the new Confederate government was FOUNDED on the idea that blacks were inferior to whites.
(3) General Robert E Lee acknowledges that he fought to preserve the institution of slavery, but one letter written after the Civil War in 1866, addressed to Gen. Thomas L. Rosser shows Lee Actually OPPOSED the erection of Confederate monuments or symbols saying it would keep division alive. (he was Sooo right)
(4) Any unprovoked attack on Civilians or Military bases are acts of Terrorism, -Fact. Major Robert Anderson of the Confederate Army became a Domestic Terrorist when he Attacked Fort Sumpter before sunrise on April 12, 1861, leading to a total senseless loss of over 620,000 American soldiers.
(5) Why do some insist on celebrating the lives of men who committed treason in the name of preserving slavery? That these statues even exist is unusual. When armies are defeated on their own soil-particularly when those armies fight to promote racist or genocidal policies-they usually don’t get to keep their symbols and material culture. Seriously, who does that?!? Even Deutschland knows better.
(6) In 1949, West Germany criminalized the display of swastikas; the symbol was blown off of buildings. The federal state systematically destroyed statues & MONUMENTS!, razed many Nazi architectural structures and buried ‘executed’ military and civilian officials in mass, unmarked graves so that their resting grounds would not become Nazi shrines. The Confederates were lucky the benevolence of Lincoln prevented him from doing the same.
(7) The statues were blunt instruments in institutionalizing white supremacy and blotting out the dual sins of treason and slavery. Those who believe anything else will forever be on the WRONG Side of history.
(8) if the South had prevailed:
(a) the Institution of Slavery would have persisted well into the 20th Century
(b) The “United” States would Not exist as the Super Power it continues to be; therefore...
(c) We May have not had the Military & Organizational strength to assist Churchill in defeating the Nazis nor stand up to the CCCP during the subsequent Cold War.
(d) We also Might not have a GIANT well deserved statue of a Real American Patriot, Abraham Lincoln, in The Capitol
Class dismissed
History never repeats. What you're feeling is an echo or a rhyme of the past.
What is history? "An echo of the past in the future; a reflex from the future on the past."

😂 Agree!
@MrGriff305 It completely is. The very topic of it is covering the concerns and events people had & experienced at that time.
Still cracks me up Phil popping up behind the drum kit during the "whoa ooaah" part when he's also out on front of the band
If you listen to the music closely, they have Phil timed right in hitting the crash cymbals on the refrains, then ducking out of sight! 😂
My generation will put it right...
Don't we all say that at some point?
Back then it was true
Back then that generation COULD make a difference.
Not sure. I'm Gen X. We all said screw the system and dropped out. Y'all made your bed. now lay in it.
Thank you Spitting Image, great show and great music video.
Remember Phil, everyone. He has retired for health reasons, and isn't doing so well. The music industry seems to have forgotten him, but we will not. ❤
Don't worry, Phil Collins and Genesis are timeless and immortal, musically - unforgettable.
Never gonna forgive him for taking an Oscar away from real artist like parker and stone
@@radical117 What a terrible thing to say
I'm passing this generation of music (not now music because it's weird but I like some artists tho) to the future generation so the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and the early 10s because I don't want it to be forgotten
@@radical117 Who???
Ironic that the Disturbed video is less disturbing than this one.
ooh ah ah ah ah
Hadn't thought about that but your correct
Disturbed sux
Disturbed's video is about the economic and cultural identity crisis of the early 2000s. While the message of unity that derives from the original song and their tribute to it is similar, Genesis' video was made in 1986. The world had been going through a Cold War for almost thirty years, with each side spreading misinformation and trying to invest more in its military arsenal than the other.
With the mid 80s (this video is is from '86), the world was also exposed to the dangers of nuclear technology following the Chernobyl incident, showing everyone that not only the nuclear weapons being used by the opposing powers were likely to bring the world to an end, but even the peace-time uses of it.
Added to this, both the Soviets and the US found themselves being led by unqualified people, with their share of problems (Gorbachev's drinking and Reagan's mental issues), people who were put in charge of an enormous military that had been waiting to pull the trigger for 3 decades, and which was now facing aging hardware and software that were liable to cause a disaster merely through a computer glitch or some decayed wiring.
Genesis' depiction of this is brilliant through its caricature, as Reagan presses what he thinks is his nurse's call button, only to trigger a missile launch instead. And all the while, the world seems to be oblivious to what is going on (the TV channels, putting everyone to sleep through funny talk-shows, optimistic series like Star Trek, which is why you see Leonard Nimoy's Spock at one point, and general entertainment, like Michael Jackson who appears in his Thriller outfit).
This was the true crisis facing the World in the 80s, even though most people block it out and only remember the fun music and different clothes or hair people wore. It was 2 sides with a very strong and embedded sense of identity, each trying to prove one's ideology over the other.
Disturbed was for the children of those generations of people, who instead felt purposeless and being only alive to exist as part of a vast economic machine that gave no importance to their value beyond their productivity. Bad in its own way, but not in the accidentally world-ending sense of things.
Might be neither of those things that screws us over now though, but this asshole virus instead, that's gonna tank economies with the equality of Communism and the ruthlessness of Capitalism simultaneously. And it's likely gonna kill more people before its conclusion than any of the last wars of the 20th and 21st centuries...
@monokhem I stand corrected, it was indeed Boris Yeltsin who I was remembering.
As for the second part, a lot of people my parents' age actually thought a nuclear incident the likes of Chernobyl was as close to being in the vicinity of a deployed weapon.
While this doesn't make any sense (a reactor is not built on the same principles as actual nuclear ordnance), these were folks born in the late 30s (and maybe being part of the Communist block didn't help either).
I don't think even an actual nuclear war would end the planet, it's been through far worse and some ecosystem always replaces the previous one, eventually.
But it would end a lot of what's been built and that people are used to. The "modern conveniences", so to speak. Hell, we've still got infrastructure in place and still the whole world's panicking, and it didn't take 10000 nuclear warheads to do it, only a tiny virus....
Heard this song when I was 12 and it was all about the beat, guitar and sound. As I've got older the words behind the music are timeless and relevant even now... Amazing song
Wow. Phil Collins, who knew he was also a prophet.
Who else was watching and listening to this on MTV in 1986!
The question should be, "Where did MTV go?" MTV is not the same MTV we saw back then. I have to click on a different channel to watch music videos and that channel just repeats the same songs. They should really revamp MTV and "bring back that lovin' feeling", cause if I wanted movies I would watch NETFLIX.
I was 3 and loved it!!
@@TheCake8queen you dont need MTV anymore, you have youtube, use it.

"Superman where are you now, where everything's gone wrong somehow." So true, my favorite part of the song. Lyrics are awesome!
Woke up in the middle of the night dreaming about this song and video. I forgot about it until just a second ago it popped back into my head. I haven't heard this song in YEARS, but it definitely a banger. It seems very fitting for a current cultural climate as well. Kudos Genesis!
I have to see some irony in the fact you dreamed about a song whoses music video is a dream
Basically the same here. Early this morning watching the news this song pops into my head. I had to look it up.
This song and video have been playing in my head…waking me up every morning for the past 2 weeks… 😶
All Reagan did was WIN the cold war! Right now, we are at DEFCON 3 because of OBiden! Why? DUMBASS REGESSIVES! Where is the song for now? Loved Genesis, but now.............................?
Wonder if they knew it would still be relevant 36 years later when they first made it
We are now IN a land confusion. 2025
40 years on and just...damn. Nailed it guys. Nailed it
40 years before that the world was just coming out of the second world war. Either we are not learning or there is a lot of profit to be made from never ending wars. I know where my money is on this subject.
As bizarre as the video is, it has a very powerful message that still stands today. "This is the world we live in." " It's worth fighting for!"
As completely weird and creepy as the video is, the hands holding the child's hands... gets me every time because... it's still true.
@@Crackrzz That is so true!🤘
You’re right about that!!!
Simple message, but, truer words were NEVER spoken! It's a world worth fighting for, but, the world powers that be, are simply fighting for a greater share of the world's political power over the vast majority of the world's citizens, no matter WHERE they live in the world! My opinion, so, prove me wrong, if you can.
It's so true
This is definitely the world we live in today. So much confusion and not enough love in the world!!!

And the sound of your laughter as I held you tight
So long ago
I won't be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right

Genisis =GENIUS. PHIL COLLINS. this man can perform any style of music. R&B, ballads, pop and classic rock, of course.. legendary musician and writer of music..
I love that at one point there are four musicians on the stage including two Phils.
One Phil for the drums and another Phil for the vocals.
The one behind the drums was called “the crappy Phil” because it was so badly messed up (not really sure how it got that way; when the band saw it, they thought “it looks crappy") and the one upfront was called “the good looking Phil.” The “crappy” one was originally going to be upfront but when they saw how it looked, they conveniently put it behind the drums and made another one to put up front.

There is hardly a prog rock song with a message as timeless as this one. It echoes across generations and centuries for all those who have been oppressed, enslaved, ill treated and cast out from human rights. Shows how the arts are one of the most powerful tools to bring light to this darkness and chaos that is our world
Yeah well, the arts can also be a great tool for the state to further it’s propaganda onto an ignorant populous… just ask Mark Ruffalo.
Or one with a more original, funkier synth-line. Such an unconventional time signature even for Prog Rock.
