We owned a '77 RR classic for 11 years, it had done just over 380,000 klm when we bought it from a friend, by the time we'd finished with it it had 900,000 klm plus a bit, one engine rebuild at 600,000 was the only major expense. A great car that took our family all over Australia, both our kids learnt to drive in it, wish we still had it, it'd go past everything except a petrol station.

At last, someone who has actually owned one (as opposed to all the dreamers and idiots who haven't) and tells it how it is. These cars are superb but like with most 'status symbols' they fall into the hands of people with zero status and no money with which to maintain them. Great to hear your experience.

So the philosophical question is: restoration or preservation? (there might be shades in between). I'm a preservation advocate. Patina counts. Use and maintain according to usage as things have more value if they are used. The 3 dr Classic is an elegant vehicle that should be seen on the road, not in a museum.

    Another professional interesting show.
For hard core remote work a well maintained older 4wd is often easier to manage. They're simpler and can usually be fixed on the trail. They're excellent teachers because you generally DIY ... the alternative is draining your bank account if you pay someone.
I do all maintenance and repairs on my ten year old D40 Navara. When I'm in the desert at least I know the vehicle ... it's one piece of the puzzle to help manage the risks.

In your case Andrew, Range Rover seems to be like a romance from your youth, a love to which you think back your whole life, reliving it from time to time. However, this is just an exhilaration, nothing more, because a lifelong relationship is wise to build with someone you can 100% rely on. T.ex. with Land Cruiser J70s series and you know it very very well. :)

It's reality that these Landys are getting old and rare, and there's not many 70s British cars around that could ever survived nearly 50 years of use. The only ones left will be the ones that prior owners looked after and not abused.

I live in south america, with a 2010 FJ cruiser, and overland in the Patagonia of Chile and Argentina. My pick will always be Toyota, simply because of Parts. Although the FJ cruiser is relatively rare, most the parts are compatible with Hilux, Tacoma, landcruiser, lexus, etc of similar years, plus or minus about 10 years. In remote locations, good chance I could find something that fits something in a pinch locally. Luckily, never needed a part so far; so I guess that is all hypothetical. 😋

Sometimes you have to buy blind. Lot's of people won't take the risk so you can pick up a bargain.
I once bid £1000 for a 70 series Prado. I flew to Scotland to pick it up. Lots of little faults that were exactly as described.
I went over the whole vehicle after a two day drive to get it home. Mainly the problems where caused by un-skilled people working on it.
    How did it turn out?
Nine years later it is parked on my drive worth £3000 or £4000. Starts everyday and I would never part with it.

Conditions you describe are a lot like what we face buying old, unrestored vehicles in Arizona. Bodies are generally good, there's minimal deep rust, but interiors and paint see a lot of wear.
I've found a good way of guesstimating how many times a vehicle odometer has rolled is to examine the condition of the pedals. The more miles, the deeper the wear. The body and interior degredation will happen regardless of mileage if left outside uncovered, but the pedal wear doesn't change much by weathering.
Another point too though, just because a vehicle is low miles, if it's old it could still suffer some mechanical issues. My '95 Chevrolet Impala SS had 6,400 miles on it ten years ago when I bought it. I'm up to around 40,500 miles now. I've had to deal with valve cover gasket failures causing oil leaks, HVAC system failure to the point that I had to replace the AC compressor and the rest of the system, and problems with sensors for both coolant level and oil level act-up intermittently. That car has been garaged its whole life, never left outside overnight except on the occasional road trip.
so all in all, even if this Range Rover has had its odometer wrap once or twice, it still seems like it's in reasonable shape and and a lower-mileage example might not be much better off anyway.

    • @takiman1
      @takiman1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree. I skipped ahead to see recap I have seen at least twice and ended the video prematurely. First time I have ever done that for this channel.
With respect some additional criticism. Other travelers have been putting out content from Africa for months and crossing borders so selling the 105 rings a bit hollow and premature now. Combined with ditching the super tourer immediately after it was built it is really adding up to a lot of content viewed where we never get to see the project used. Sure some of it is Covid, but the rest is choices that are starting to add up in a frustrating way. I was a Patreon in the past but frankly with the super tourer I was fairly convinced my money wasn't really needed and sent it on to more modest content producers who are not just doing builds to sell off, and to be frank, not stretching out a drive across Australia on bitumen into a XX episode series. This is going to be longer than the Canning Stock series which really shows how stretched out this is getting.

If I had that Range Rover, I'd spend whatever it took to make it more well sorted than when it left the factory and I'd drive it wherever I wanted to go, on pavement or off it.
But 45 years old doesn't bother me. I'll go to the epicenter of nowhere in a well sorted Willys MB/Ford GPW.
Well sorted is well sorted. I don't see age as being altogether relevant and compared to what I have access to in new vehicles here in the USA, the older stuff has a lot more appeal.

Andrew you recently spoke about a weight reduction in the new troopy you propose to build. This is boring. Nobody wants to see that it's hardly any change to what you did before. Why only Toyota's? They're good cars but everyone's seen Toyotas done and done again in Australia. Please.. Now before everyone gets at me in the comments and says it will break, and it's not reliable, and make reference to all this nonsense about the new off road spec silverado 1500 trail boss soon to come out in Australia, this guy has driven Africa in old lemon 4wds. What would be so bad as to what I'm suggesting with the canopy set-up from your yellow truck? I hate the drive lines in Toyota's there's so few options. I think the silverados are a much more interesting vehicle and basically an LS motor (with direct injection) and 10 speed. I'm not denying there are more electronics, a 10 speed and more complex front end. But it's not like you couldn't work with that. You just wouldn't do it out of spite and continue to ride the Toyota bandwagon or some other usual suspects 4wds in Australia. I'm not coming at this from a show pony angle there are people in Australia who build up US trucks sure. I am coming at it from an angle "you can make it work" you can overland without it being a 79! Well I'll still watch the troopy build as you have bought it already it seems.

If you guys had an agreement to build up a rig and get exposure for the shops by getting YT views, again, it's your business, but by what you've said in this video, a whole lot of labor was DONATED to build up the Cruiser, not exchanged for YT exposure, and that you sold the rig because of covid. That just sounds messed up to me.
Reasonably, an experienced person would know what it means to donate time and labor to projects of other people, and they would also know how it feels when things go south. It's all I'm saying.
