  • This week, Jack and Edwin make another questionable cheap car purchase, an unreliable classic V8 P38 Range Rover. They'll take it out on the road, see what it's like off-road on some of the UK's finest green lanes before taking it to a Land Rover specialist to find out everything wrong with our cheap 4x4...

'Tatey one chief financial officer' aka T81 CFO number plate came with the rangy when I bought her in March 2019. She needs a completely new wiring loom to fix the intermittent electrical issues, someone before me had hacked the existing one to death. If you buy an old P38 take out the body control unit (BCU) and open it up. Check that the printed circuit boards are not coming loose, that is what kills the BCUs. She still needs front axle oil seals, shocks and bushings but then should be pretty well complete. Paint needs doing properly too. I bought it for when I regularly visited the UK to see my old mum. It was intended too as a project car. Renting a car for several weeks is expensive, and you end up in tiny uncomfortable stick shifts and I prefer automatics. The plan was to do the work myself, which I started by replacing all of the cooling system, changing the auto transmission oil and filter and a general engine service. That heater return pipe that you found, is metal and I hadn't noticed it was weeping. The front hubs, CV joints, rotors / discs, suspension air bags, air compressor, air conditioning condenser and filter are all fairly new. Kyle fitted them because I couldn't get into the UK with the travel restrictions. It also had a complete new exhaust system, pity some low life loser had to steal part of it.
Travel restrictions stopped me travelling to the UK until February 2022. As things happened, I used Tatey One for a few weeks until Mum passed shortly after in April. 2022. I then no longer needed the car and passed it to Kyle. Even with the cost, had Covid not hit, then it would have been cheaper and better than renting. If you fix the remaining issues, I think you will have a great vehicle.
I am delighted to see her getting a new lease of life and probably being cared for properly. Living outside the UK it would cost me way more to visit and sell the car than to basically give it away. Enjoy it.

I bloody LOVE a P38. Done a full engine rebuild on my 1995 4.6 in the last year. Your engine disabled issue is probably the micro switches in the drivers door lock. I had the same issue, change the lock assembly and itll probably sort it. Also, thanks to Andy for the top tip on switching off the annoying reversing mirror dip! 😀

Love the P38, I’ve had mine for 11 years now and I’ve always done preventive maintenance on it so it’s been perfectly reliable. The beauty of owning an old Land Rover is that you know what’s next to go wrong because all the faults are commonly known so you can prevent it before it happens, simple. I certainly won’t be parting with mine.

  • @srowell3
    @srowell3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I bought my £800 p38 2.5 diesel manual about 6 years ago. It costs about a grand a year to maintain. It's easy enough to work on. Just replaced all the air bags and EAS pump myself. 28mpg if you're sensible.
The engine disabled is the battery in the key not making contact. Happens on mine and you just have to wiggle the battery cover on the key and try again!
The remote on the key has the same frequency as WiFi so it can drain the car battery depending on where you park as it keeps the car awake.
For the eas if it ever starts locking out definitely get an easkicker which resets it without a laptop. Also if it doesn't go up leave the door open and car running so it can get the air tank up to pressure before trying to go up.

I bought a 1 owner 2000 4.6hse p38 here in the US for $2400. I’ve had it for a year, and so far the only stuff that has gone wrong are wheel speed sensors, cruise control, wiper motors, window motors, gauge cluster, sat nav screen, AC controls, every bulb, and it leaks from the radiator, front main, rear main, oil pan and valve cover gaskets. So it’s going great!Might trade up to an L322👍

Mine only needs a head gasket, a transmission, the air suspension rebuilt (it works, but I think it needs new bags, and a valve block rebuild). The ac display is disappearing, the radio needs the code (the code I have no longer works). I think that will fix the problems…. 😂
It’s a 1996 SSE modified by Cameron concepts. It’s supercharged so it’s not slow (it’s not fast, but it was in 1996!). Probably one of the first ones they did. One of my favorite vehicles.

I loved this thing til I had to use it daily, neither myself or the rangy were ready for that situation and I don't blame the car at all, I did my best considering how rapidly the faults escalated and if nothing else I got her to the next relay point in her race so she had a chance! 😂

By 60k miles / 2 years it smoked from one tailpipe on start up, needed the coolant topped up every few weeks and came back on a low loader once a month or so and sometimes the cruise control would refuse to disengage which could be exciting. I run my 4.6 (lpg thankfully) as my company car. 115k miles, cost me 1300 quid 3 years ago. I do lost of the maintenance myself which is mainly basic spanner work. Great support on Facebook groups now including electronics, parts (including keys) from independent supploers. To monitor the various computer modules i use a cheapo OBD2 reader for live engine data and RSW solutions software and cable for digging into the BECM, EAS, HEVAC etc. So far so good, i love driving the old girl.

I bought a 99 Range Rover HSE 4.6 for $500USD, someone had stolen the Cats out of it, got a replacement for $400USD with all four O2 sensors, passed the American version of MOT, drove it for a year (loved it) then sold it for $2,000USD. It's still on the road 3 years later!

LOVE the P38! Had one back in 2010 for a couple of years. Used to go wrong just sitting outside my house.
Have an L322 now which is the same age as the P38 was and that gives much less trouble.
Gotta say - the Bordeaux gives me tingles in my special place 🥰😍

Something very strange about the YT algorithm. Never seen this channel before (soorryyy) and yet two days before I have my £700 off eBay 2001 P38 Bordeaux delivered it recommends this channel.
I bought mine as a project car because my OCD needs feeding while I wait for my restored '78 Mini to go to the painters (in May!). Nothing is ever as bad as people say ..... 😂😂

I absolutely love my P38. Yes it throws up problems but everything it's all fixable, and it'll go almost anywhere. I'd rather sell my 700bhp CLS63 AMG than sell my P38!

Just that reaction alone when the key was turned and it didn't show any faults said more than a thousand words :D My guess here is the system that registers faults, is itself, faulty

@@skyrocketautomotive In fairness, after having finished watching the video, it does look like it's in better shape than what a first glance would have me believe, knowing what they paid for it, with the exception of the electrical gremlins
All in all, i've seen worse cars for more money. Pretty good going for a near 25 year old £400 land rover😅

You need to change the RF receiver for the alarm/central locking. Modified version is part number YWY500170 from Land Rover. Helps with the interference from phone masts etc

I've had my P38 for 12 years, in that time I've spent less on it than they've spent on this one in 4 years. It fails almost every MoT first time, and had an oil leak for the last 10 years, but its been reliable. Not bad for 3k in 2011, and now just touching 270k miles.

L322, supposed to be the least grief to own? Work required on that, not bad at all and far better than main dealer prices. Priceless to find an experienced and knowledgeable, trustworthy garage.
