I have never owned a range rover so I don't know how reliable they are but honestly, what vehicle a person buy is their business... what business is anyone to criticise what anyone buys? We watch this channel because of Andrew's passion. If you don't understand that, why watch this channel?

Andrew, I really enjoyed this series. It seemed like the start of the journey was all about replacing your old Range Rover, and as the story progressed it became more and more about this Range Rover.
Because of the tales you told along the way, I think it’s obvious that the reason you sought to replace your old Range Rover wasn’t because of the car, but because of the adventures you had with the car. And I’m sure, that having shared the experience of crossing Australia with this new Range Rover, it’ll be starting to endear itself to you in the same way.
An adventure with no obstacles isn’t very adventurous, and maybe the people debating the technicalities of reliability, toyota, etc. are missing the point.
Anyway - thank you for sharing the adventure. I Iook forward to watching your experience with the Range Rover continue.

I have a 10 year old Land Rover Defender - never had one issue.
It all comes down to the smile, also when you leave your car in a car park, if you don't turn around and look at it, you are in the wrong car. Life is to short for dull cars.
    Your smile says it all

I do not understand where people are coming off critiquing you for your purchase of a vintage Range Rover. You do not buy a vintage Land Rover or a Range Rover for modern reliability, comfort, and amenities. No, you buy these vehicles for the experience. You buy them for the nostalgia, the memories, and to carry on the torch of an age of exploration and adventure. So Andrew, have as much fun as humanly possible and keep up the fantastic videos.

    This series has been excellent!
I agree that the Range Rover Classic was iconic. Pretty close to perfectly satisfying a very demanding design challenge, out of the box.
Reliability also depends on intelligent preparation and maintenance - your experience with your early vehicles has informed your opinions and decisions over a lifetime.
Thank you for telling your stories.

I drive Toyota’s these days but when i see a series 3 or 2a long wheel base it still turns my head .. keep up the great videos ..

I remember going shooting in Scotland when I was around 11 years old in my uncles RR, I thought it was the coolest thing ever., blue with a tan interior! I had a Defender 110 in 2010 and sold it because of having children, had two hilux’s since then, had issues with both of them but I still think they are one of the best for reliability. Use 70 series at work and like them as well, except brakes and for god sake Toyota give them a 6th gear. Anyway 2 years ago I couldn’t resist the urge and bought another defender puma 110, and it’s the best decision for me that I ever made, it’s very subjective but I love this thing it makes me smile every time I drive it and I love how I can work on it myself. Great episode, I really do share your sentiments.

Love a good rant! Social media give's everyone the ability to express their opinion. And thats all it is, an opinion! Stick to your guns Andrew, love your work. Lastly, everyone gets so hung up on brands and put you or themselves in box, i.e. Toyota man, Nissan man, Range Rover lover etc; but at the end of the day its the not vehicle that matters but the memories and stories that you personally associate with it. This series has enabled you to tell some great stories!

I owned a 1995 Range Rover Classic. It was at one time an East coast vehicle so unfortunately it had some rust cancer.. However after modifying the Electronic ignition module which was inside of the distributor to a remote location just to the side of the radiator on an finned aluminum panel, changing the transfer case to a locking one, changing out a few relays, it was very reliable. I also got rid of the air suspension and added a two inch lift, so off road and on road it was the best of both worlds. I donated it to Rocky Mountain Public Television since it was rusting out and had a rear crankshaft seal leak that would have required a total engine rebuild to fix. I immensely miss it as it was the best on and off road vehicle I ever owned. It was under powered but I did mange about 17 MPG.

Andrew the 1st 2 minutes were gold, and the series was great.
I have actually been laughed at for owning an 04 Discovery II. But in 4 years of off roading in British Columbia, some pretty remote, I have never been left stranded.
It generally just runs, problem free no but at 18 years nothing really unexpected. Other than head gaskets but that was result of poorly done previous repair. Even then it was found as a result of a slightly over pressure cooling system.

Hi Andrew, really enjoyed watching this adventure with your 45 year old Range Rover, I guess what you can’t buy new off the shelf, is the character of the original 70”s Range Rover, great to see shots of it crossing deserts in Australia, which is what it was designed to do, and what a capable vehicle it still is, nice to watch a classic vehicle with no electronics and computers, simpler and in some ways much better. Would love to see her again in an another adventure.

Yes a new vehicle would be more reliable than an old RRC. But when that new vehicle does eventually go wrong, your screwed. When my old RRC goes wrong (which is not that often), I get the spanners out and I can fix it. For this reason alone I would never buy a modern car. The idea of making myself totally dependant on someone else, just to keep my car running, fills me with fear.

Agree totally, new has more bells and whistles....more that WILL go wrong. However new cars are built lighter and simply will not hold up over time. I have a '75 Chevy pick up that will still be going long after my more modern vehicles have been sent to the scrap yard

Andrew, i have loved this series as well as all the others you've done (including the Shackleton vid) . i can fully understand where you have come from with this series, i would love to track down my first landrover for the adventures i had in that, still regret selling that all those years ago. I fully agree with the rant about those bashing landrover reliability. Yes i have had breakdowns, but my current 110 defender i dragged out of a field 5 years ago stuck a battery on it and it ran, its now done over 100000 miles in my ownership all over the UK and the only breakdowns were due to me not changing the cambelt properly and hitting debris on the motorway which ripped off a brake pipe, i wonder how many other vehicles that are 23 years old could do that!

  • @dsrylchopping2630

My first car was a 78 2 door RR. I just loved it. The only time i didn't was filling up, especially when my mate with his 2.8L d rocky wasn't. Mine was not power steering, didn't need it. It did fall foul of the 3 fuses problem. Big fuses need more time to burn throu, in the meanwhile the wiring had melted.
While my mates where modding their holdens and fords, rebuilt the RR. I went full 4.2 L . Not the p76 route. The worlds best harmonic balancer, made in South Australia, the timing chain from the Buick 3.8 in the holden, duel link and a tropical radiator. Any suspect part out. Oh and a high torque cam to enhance my low range fun walking over and up anything. Id love the chance to do it again. My JK is as if id put the RR in a blender along with the rocky to blend the best of both. Sadly id say it is well short of either. For the money brilliant value. But after 13 years it has stopped for the first time and i can buy the parts i need. Jeep has stopped making some already. And i was unaware of the catch can common rail fix. And a design fault with the intercooler hose. Im all most too worried to take a modern 4x4 outback now. If it stops ......

Great explanation. As so many have said, until you have owned a LR you really can’t explain the attraction so many have to them. Not all will enjoy the experience, and that’s fine….doesn’t make the vehicle bad…just not right for them.
Like it or not LR have tended to push boundaries with their vehicle. This RRC was probably criticised for having “new tech” coil springs….and not leaf springs that the local blacksmith could repair :)…..the D3/D4 were also panned for similar “tech” advances. The new Defender…same. History repeats. Whatever you drive…just enjoy the outdoors….

Couldn’t agree more with you about the reliability - as a mechanic in a specialised 4wd workshop in the ‘80 working on all makes of 4wd the Land Rovers required little more than general servicing. It was the land cruisers that were high maintenance, especially the knuckle housing leaks and wheel bearings. Even the Patrols had far better reliability over the ‘cruisers. Just my first hand experience.

For a brief moment there you sounded like a LR fan boy, but yes they are amazing vehicles that are extremely capable. I think that the Rangie will make mincemeat of my Gen 2 Pajero in extreme conditions too.
The fatal flaw of the British motor industry was the build quality and the fit & finish of their products.
The Landy was the first vehicle most of the rural peoples of the world saw. It conquered parts of the world that were only accessible by plane or foot/animals.
Yes they have plenty of issues, but I'm sure their handbrakes work better than a Cruiser's.
Next I think you should find a series 1 shorty and do the same trip in it🤔. It'll probably take you a few days longer, but I for one would love to see such a series.

I'm a LandRover Animal : have been for most of the past forty years . I would say that I've found that many who complain about LR reliability are actually LR/RR buyers . The Discover 3 was a right pain for many when it launched . I've still got my '07 V8 and although it's not had problems , it's wear-rate is above that of my LC200 V8 and the neighbour's Prado . Suspension parts are weak and I "baby" the ZF because if it fails , that D3 is history . Nothing is perfect but if it gets me from A to B without drama , that'll do . I'm well heeled , but many can't afford this stuff so there is jealousy involved in the 4X4 World . Is there a re-spray on the horizon ? Have fun Andrew :-)

Dad had a RR in Cairns in the early 70s, took us to Cape Trib in the mud with ease, best car he ever had...would love an LR4 but not sure I could handle the derision, although your thoughts may just sway me...that or a Toyota it seems :(.
Look forward to seeing where you go with this passion

Use it as a billboard for your channel. Print a massive 4x4 overland logo for the bonnet. Drive it for fun and let it sell the channel.

Out of the box, LR have never been that reliable, but with a little effort, an owner can make them very reliable. After I rebuilt my 109 from scratch with a Tdi and several mods, it broke down twice in a decade, first time when a plastic Tee in a the coolant lines for the heater and fuel preheater (modification for running vegoil) ruptured, and second when the fuel injection pump solenoid burned out. My 95 RRC only once failed to get me to my destination in fifteen years, and that was a corroded engine earth preventing the starter motor from cranking fast enough, a simple fix. If you look at the condition that most LRs are used in, they are heavily neglected and abused. That is why they are unreliable. But other marques in that condition would have been scrapped.

In their day the Classic range was THE vehicle to own if you waned a truly capable and comfortable 4WD. I've owned S3 and 110 Ladies and they had minor issues, usually just maintenance stuff that wore out but was still ribbed for owning a Landie. I now own a Jeep and cop it for them being unreliable too, you just can't win.
I did the Simpson about 7 years ago with my Jeep GC an F250, Pathfinder, Pajero, BT50 and 80 Series and the only cars that didn't have any problems were the Jeep and the F250.

I had a Range Rover L322 for years. Got it to over 300k km. Was written off by another driver before it’s time. My wife reminds me of the money I spent maintaining it but I can only remember the good times driving it. Magnificent car. Replaced with a Q7. Worst car I’ve ever owned. I get it. RR are special.

I think what most people's gripes are quality in its entirety mainly components and build, which in this day and age is not in a manufactures interest. The charm and appeal to an individual is why you by it, and what you require it for.

Land rover owners who complain about reliability are the ones that fit britpart or terrafirma. Once you go through that phase and either refit genuine or uprated parts you realise how reliable they are again.

My family purchased our first Toyota last year. A 2019 Tacoma for my brother. In 2018 my dad purchased a Chevy Colorado. He drove the Toyota and disliked the way it drove compared to the Chevy. After driving both I would agree the Chevy is far better in every way except the fact it is not made as well. It’s more comfortable, has better handling, quieter and more economical and more powerful. Even the stereo is better. The only caveat is it’s lack of durability. If I had to chose I would go for the Chevy. The cost of unreliability is not worth the negatives of the Toyota.

Hi Andrew I've really enjoyed the series and Gwyn's reaction to it was priceless. You now don't know what to do with it??? Just to prove a point why not take it down the Canning Stock Route when it opens or across the Anne Beadell Highway. Stay safe and please keep doing what you do we all enjoy it so much and thank you for sharing.
    Cheers

Dont kink shame, and have fun with it. Do what you want with your time and money. I get sometimes you just buy something fun that makes you smile but requires a lot of work. I mean look at race cars they basically need to be rebuilt after a weekend of use.

I agree that if you buy a 40ish year old car, you are not buying it for reliabilty. But I disagree about the comment about buying for reliability, if reliability is all that matters, you need to buy mid to late 90s toyotas. Current hilux and cruiser models aren't build that way any more. 70 series is about 40 years old, so not new...

Hi, liked the video, I’m an engineer I feel that sometimes people believe that you can buy everything…. And don’t need to work for it. I would not dream of going anywhere unless I knew what I would need to organise to get back, if things went wrong. In the end machines need to be maintained correctly. Thanks
