Such a mundane thing but even after several decades working on bikes I just learned a couple things about something I've worn out and replaced without much thought. For one, I never flipped the lever for Presta valves unless the rubber fitting was getting worn and I assumed it was just a sign I needed to replace the head (and I'd always swear that I had replace the entire valve for just a small part). But I come from a Silca world where there was no lever to flip. Second, I never really considered how they work! They just did and I moved on to bigger things. I do think when I swap my gaskets next (soon), I'll be smearing a very thin coat of silicon grease on any rubber parts just to be sure everything moves smoothly. Thanks RJ!
Thanks alot dude! My pump head was only feeding the schrader and not the presta. After disassembly i found the rubber ball was gunked up with tubeless sealant and was effektively glued in place! After cleaning and reassembly works like a charm! Who knew valve heads could be serviced? :D
Mine too! I put backpressure/air to un-stuck it, without opening it🙂! But it might stuck again.. At least now i know the solution.. Your comment was as helpful as the video, thanks! 🙂
I never knew I could replace that head, let alone take it apart . Glad I kept that old pump and now going to take it apart and see whats going on with it. Thank You for posting this. Cheers to you.
This morning, I went to the bike shop to get a new dual valve (it's leaking on the Schrader side, which was seldom used...it's still usable on the Schrader side, but not on the Presta side. They did not have it. I went to the local hardware shop, which suggested the bike shop... Then I found this video ! Thanks a lot!
I have an identical dual head setup on a much cheaper pump! Great video. I never would have tried to mess with it as it looked a bit fragile. Glad to know its serviceable! Thanks again for great detailed info and video!
This helped me make my pump work again. The problem: I had air coming out of the wrong side. Because I now understand how the pump prevents air coming out from both sides, I thought: "what if I place the pumphead sideways?" This fixed my problem, because now the ball inside the pumphead was doing its work again. Thank you! 🎉
I have a similar pump and it stopped working on the schrader side. Took it apart after watching this video and cleaned the internals and the rubber ball and lightly oiled everything before putting it back together. Now it works like a dream again on both sides of the head. There was just so much dust and grime inside the ball valve that it was stuck to one side.
Just used this video to fix my park tool pump. After years of only using the larger side the ball had become seized. A quick disassembles n clean and it’s good as new. Thanks
You just saved me $150.00 from buying a new pump .. which I was already to do! My pump with this type of head was only sending air to the Schrader side, so I whacked the head good on my rubber floor mat thus freeing the little ball .. and now it works on the presta too! Thanks!
Just saved myself £8.00. My pump was only working on the schrader valve side when all I need is the presta. Disassembled and super glued the ball to the schrader side, swapped the rubber tubes over as in the video and now have a perfectly working presta once again. Thanks 👍
I'm so glad I found your video! The hose on my unit got broken close to the head and your disassembly helped me to understand that I can just reconnect the head again. The hose is just a little shorter, but it beats buying new pump. There is one more fault that I wasn't able to fix though and that's the lever dropping down, breaking the clamping force on the valve. It looks like the piece is just worn down too much. What I do is I wedge a piece of wood in the head which fixes the lever in place. Thanks and have a like!
Thanks to your video I was able to take my pump apart and clean the gunk off the ball valve so now it's working again and I dont have to buy a new one. Thanks for a great video :)
I had some fun the other day trying to pump an inner tube, which had been taken off the bike to find a slow-ish leak - and the air kept on coming out of the wrong hole on the pump. Now I know why. I had tried putting my finger over the wrong hole to stop the airflow - but probably reinforced the flow to that hole. I ended up using another pump, but now have wisdom on my side -- for next time! Great Vid.
Thanks for the clear and detailed tutorial, you helped me get my Craigslist pump working! The step-by-step instructions gave me the confidence to take it apart and I’m really excited to tinker with all kinds of junk that I own whereas before I thought I’d break everything I touched!
Wow, thanks for the video, I was gonna buy a new tyre with the other valve and all it took as a couple of minutes of dismantling and the other valve works now. Thanks!
I didn’t know what to do when the valve only blew from the wrong hole. I just blew some air in by mouth and that possibly moved the ball so now it’s working again. Nice!
Such a niche video, I really lucked out finding this one as I'm trying to disassemble and CAD model that exact dual valve pump head for my engineering class! I couldn't figure out how to take it apart for the life of me.
the ball was the key on why when the other nozzle is in use the pump air doesn't just come out on the other nozzle, because when there's a greater pressure from outside (air from tire) the ball is pushed to the other nozzle hole effectively sealing the the other nozzle air hole. As for why the air doesn't simply go back to the pump it's because there is another "one way" ball mechanism at the base of the pump. Amazing how they can think of such mechanism.
I think this is the correct explanation. And when you try to pump up a completely flat tire, there's no back-pressure from the tire pushing the ball, so there's a high chance the air will just come on the wrong side...
Thanks for the video. I have the Blackburn version of the dual pump head and a dirtdauber built a nest in the shrader side. After I cleaned out the dirt, the shrader won't hold pressure (presta side still works). Now, I will take it apart to repair (or replace the head).
Excellent video!!!!!!!! THe check valve ball on mine was stuck... I sprayed some armor-all type product down the holes and that help loosen the ball. I helped it along by using an air compressor line to give it a quick (small) blast in each hole and bingo! Thanks again!
Thanks for this detailed video. Just this morning my floor pump was leaking air and never realized you could take valve apart and switch the gaskets around. I’ll definitely try this on the morning before buying a new pump 👍🚵🏻♂️
The presta side is also a Dunlop side. I have dunlop and auto-schrader valves. I use floor pump at garage. I have also short travel pump that has turnable head. One head is for presta-dunlop and other is for auto-schrader. Thanks for the hint, i can turn the pump gum sealing around for new contact! 😄
Got puncture, bought new inner tubes, (stupidly) didn't check if they were presta or schrader valves. Couldn't work out how the hell to get the pump head to switch to presta. Got annoyed. Watched this video, understood how the dual pump head works, managed to pump up tyres. Cheers mate!
Great video.Very useful for guys like me who love occasional DIY projects here and there. When you think something mustn't work as easy as it seems, take it apart!
Nice one RJ. Picked up another floor pump a while ago, but didn't seem to work as good as my K-Mart floor pump. Gonna open the head up and check it out. Thanks mate.
My one was stuck on the schrader valve. I started following your guide but it turns out after hitting the pin a few times it works again! Percussive maintenance ftw!
Great & informative video. Something that you use all the time but had no idea how it worked, now I do. For those that plan on working on theirs, if you want to extend the life of the rubber seals 303 Protectant works great & when re-assembling the parts, spraying some rubbing alcohol will make things much easier.
Thanks! I have a cheap pump from KYK tools that sometimes takes a pretty sharp first stroke to seat the ball. I wasn't going to replace the head because the whole thing only cost me around $7. If it gets to be too much of an issue I'll clean it up and swap the stem seals while I have it open.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Well I kinda feel like the schrader hole is placed at more prominent position, probably because it's a more common valve. But if you primarily or exclusively use it for presta, then it'd be a bit nicer to switch their positions. You'd also have an easier time using it on a disc wheel where the valve sits in a cut out.
I just replaced the dual valve head on my Lezyne Alloy Floor Drive pump with their ABS1 Pro HP Chuck because it wouldn't fit a Presta valve on a particular brand of tube I just got. Besides the fit issue, my original chuck wasn't pumping air through the Schrader side. I think I'll take it apart and see if I can apply these fixes to it. I'll probably never use it again because I never liked the dual head design with that lever that almost always rapped my knuckle and caused a lot of pain when I'd flick it back, but it'd be nice to repair it if I could. The new screw-on chuck is infinitely better. Thanks for the video RJ.
Cool stuff. Now trying to see if I can retrofit the Park Tool dual-valve pump head onto my Giyo track pump. As Giyo (a Taiwanese firm) makes a ton of pumps under contract for other brands, this seems straightforward enough. It would eliminate the job of dismantling the pump head, inverting two parts, and reinstalling every time I had to inflate between Presta and Schrader valve tubes

After watching this, overhauled my floorpump, cleaned, relubed o-rings with silicon spray, swapped those rubber things, works like new, Big thanks!
🤔Gotta hand it to the engineers who designs stuff like this! Thank you for the clear and concise explanation!👍
I always wondered how this ending works in my pump. Many thanks for the explanation :)
Greetings from Poland!
I wish everyone a lot of health!!!
I thanks you brotha
Nice honest chap, you can tell, no hype, no music, fully explained, breathe of fresh air compared to many hyped videos. .

Easy to understand when you can see the insides - thanks for making this.
A perfect tutorial. One of the best videos on TH-cam.
I have an identical dual head setup on a much cheaper pump! Great video. I never would have tried to mess with it as it looked a bit fragile. Glad to know its serviceable! Thanks again for great detailed info and video!
Thanks so much. I just fixed mine. And learned which way to flip the lever. I'm old school, you had to flip the lever down to make the seal.
This helped me make my pump work again.
The problem: I had air coming out of the wrong side.

Great video! I was able to repair my existing floor pump! Saved it from the landfill!

You can always buy a new pump head.
Extremely useful , bought some on amazon and believe they are leaking but will now have a better picture
Thanks to your video I was able to take my pump apart and clean the gunk off the ball valve so now it's working again and I dont have to buy a new one. Thanks for a great video :)
a bunch of sealant get into the chuck and this totally saved me from buying a new pump. thanks for the info!

Awesome, I've never thought about how they work thb, great video, Cheers.
I've had a pump with this style head for nearly 20 years and it never fails me.
Really well described, no hyped talk, bet he’s a nice chap.
Great vid. You are a great teacher. Going to glue the ball to presta side so I have a schrader only pump. Thanks

did this to an old pedro's, worked like a charm. thank you!
Many thanks for such a clearly presented and useful video.
Fantastic explanation. I'm in the middle of doing some maintenance on my Planet Bike ST pump and came across this video in my subscriptions. Fun info.
Wow, thanks for the video, I was gonna buy a new tyre with the other valve and all it took as a couple of minutes of dismantling and the other valve works now. Thanks!

My lever broke off a Blackburn Airtower 6 and is stuck to my Schroeder valve. and this explained a lot. Thank you!
Oh, it was very useful. I was about to reverse-engineer it when I found your video which made it easier.
Swap the gaskets! - Brilliant! Thanks
Great explanation, human ingenuity always amazes me!
Amazing, didn't know it would be so simple to repair this !
Thanks for the video, i fixed my pump !
🙋🧑🔧 best information sar ji
Well done and thank you for the video
Thanks , saved me buying a new head! :)
Thanks. I couldn’t see anything wrong with mine but when I put it back together it works.

I think this is the correct explanation. And when you try to pump up a completely flat tire, there's no back-pressure from the tire pushing the ball, so there's a high chance the air will just come on the wrong side...
Very good, clear description.
Nicely explained! 👍
Thank you so much. I always wondered how the air goes to right side of the item.
Thank you for solving this mystery. 😁😁
Excellent explanation!
Wow what a clever design.

That is why I signed yo for youtube, to watch quick very useful videos that saves you a lot of time and few bucks as well
I always thought they worked via the use of black magic!😂
Thanks for the explanation RJ, you learn something new everyday.👍😊
Thanks for this detailed video. Just this morning my floor pump was leaking air and never realized you could take valve apart and switch the gaskets around. I’ll definitely try this on the morning before buying a new pump 👍🚵🏻♂️
brilliant video. love this. I always wondered how these things worked. More of these kind of videos.
your expert skills will come into play if this pandemic worsens stay healthy. ; ]
What a brilliant design.
Thank you RJ for showing us this.
Thanks man, mine was leaking and now I know what to expect. Love your channel!
Excellent and informative, RJ. Thank you.

That's actually really smart! Thanks for the video.
I have a similar dual valve head pump - broke 2 presta valve tips already, gonna use a shreider adapter from now on.
Only needed the last two minutes 👍🏾
Great video.Very useful for guys like me who love occasional DIY projects here and there. When you think something mustn't work as easy as it seems, take it apart!
Very true!
Nice one RJ. Picked up another floor pump a while ago, but didn't seem to work as good as my K-Mart floor pump. Gonna open the head up and check it out. Thanks mate.
I have never once thought about that pump head. In fact I never even knew what it was called. Now I know. 👍
Really clear explanation. The only thing stopping me is The punching out procedure but I reckon I can get a punch pretty cheap.
A set of punches is useful to have, but in a pinch you can use any steel rod of suitable diameter, e.g. a long enough screw would work.
Great video really like attention to detail. Well done mate.
very nice and deeply operation on dual hole pump valve nice rj
Yes, I have been curious. thank you for sharing
Very great Exp
Very useful information, thank you.
My one was stuck on the schrader valve. I started following your guide but it turns out after hitting the pin a few times it works again! Percussive maintenance ftw!
You're giving me the idea of rebuilding the valve head on my old Blackburn Air Tower 5 (which technically needs a full rebuild). Too bad it's at work!
Great & informative video. Something that you use all the time but had no idea how it worked, now I do. For those that plan on working on theirs, if you want to extend the life of the rubber seals 303 Protectant works great & when re-assembling the parts, spraying some rubbing alcohol will make things much easier.
ohhhh interesting. thanks! I have the same pump 😁
Thank you for the broadcast so great!
Thanks great info just got a new bike with the different stems rhanks
Thanks. I opened mine up to find tire goop to keep tires from going flat clogging the ball.
I was wondering how that thing worked, thanks!
Great vid. Thanks for the info.
Great stuff, RJ.

Fixed mine, thanks!
Thank you. I just fixed mine.
Could you flip the positions of the holes so the presta valve goes on the end of the head?
Probably not. Why? You are second person to ask this. Why???
@@RJTheBikeGuy Well I kinda feel like the schrader hole is placed at more prominent position, probably because it's a more common valve.
