That's awesome! Several years ago I bought an inner tube and didn't realize it had a presta valve. I didn't even know how to pump it with air! I hated it. I just bought a used carbon gravel bike and it had a presta valve. I had to buy presta-to-schrader adapter and pumped up the tires. I really didn't have to buy that adapter because I didn't know two of my pumps had this feature where you reverse the rubber and fitting like you demonstrated in the video. THIS IS A LIFESAVER!!! THANK YOU!
Same thing with me. Was going to buy a new pump because my new bike has presta valves. All of my old bikes had schrader valves. I pulled out my super old park tools pump and discovered it could be converted like in the video. Good stuff.

Spent more time than I’m willing to admit trying to figure out why my pump wasn’t working. I thought the tyres had green goo in them or that something was dead wrong with my bike, but it turned out I had to unscrew the miserable brass washers first to get the pump to work. Hi Keren, thanks for your comment🙏. That's frustrating. I'm so glad that you found the video helpful and that you can now deal with presta valves and maybe even help others who are not aware on how they work🙂.
Thank you so much! I start a new job on. Monday and have to cycle there, so I bought two new inner tubes for my bike plus a pump, and I whenI got home I thought the pump wasn't compatible. Then I watched your video. You're a life saver!
You're very welcome! I'm glad the video helped you figure out the pump compatibility. Good luck with your new job and enjoy your rides! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! 🚴♂️
I only found that Presta valves exist after I bought my bike and eventually had to top off the tires for the first time, so it was frustrating to find out that way and that, additionally, I would have to buy (and keep track of) an adapter. This tutorial is very helpful. Thanks for making a quality instructional video about a topic that many cyclists probably think is a very basic one.

i just bought a bike and it had the presta valve and i bought a pump and watched like 3 other videos that didn’t help because i didn’t know that you had to switch the rubber piece inside but once i got that i was able to do it! Thank you!!
Hi, thanks for the comment.🙏 That's great to hear! I'm glad you found the video helpful. I can understand how watching other videos without that crucial information might have been frustrating. But I'm glad our video provided the missing piece of the puzzle for you. Now that you've got it sorted out and know how to switch the rubber piece inside the pump, you'll be able to inflate your Presta valve without any issues. Thanks once again for sharing your experience, and I'm glad we could assist you in getting it right. If you have any more questions or need further help, feel free to reach out. As a professional cyclist for 20 years, I can provide a couple of suggestions. In addition to this video. 1. Rotate the wheel so the valve is directly centre on the ground. Inflate the tube closet to the ground as opposite to what is shown in the video. It stresses the cord less and as gravity is working in your favour it doesn’t encourage air to escape as quick. 2. Inflate slightly over your desired PSI limit, when you disconnect the valve it releases some air and a few psi over compensates for this.
Hey Peter, thanks a lot for taking the time to comment and sharing your pro cyclist wisdom with us and the other viewers. Your ideas about rotating the wheel so the valve is in the centre and inflating the tube that's closest to the ground totally make sense. And that tip about slightly overinflating the tyre to compensate for the air release when disconnecting the valve is clever too. To be honest, though, in the context of our video, the overall difference these suggestions make might be negligible. But hey, I love hearing different perspectives, and I'm sure that these suggestions will be useful to some of our pro cyclist viewers. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, and I hope you keep enjoying our content!🙂
Whats wrong with proper valves!? Why make it so much more awkward to carry out the simple task of pumping up a bicycle tyre by putting these stupid delicate valves on, which I had to buy a specialist pump for? It's a Helpful video, so thanks for posting, but I don't see the point in these valves, apart from making life more difficult
@@nicholasdowling6415 I still don't get what's the point with prostate valves. They are usually found on sport oriented bikes like road and mountain bikes but I still don't understand what advantage they offer.
Awesome you saved me from buying another pump thinking I had gotten the wrong format or something. Real life savers and what youtube should be all about, people helping each other.

This video is incredibly descriptive and slow enough that I didn't need to rewind or pause at anytime. Not that inflating the tire is difficult but there are a few steps like turning the internal adapter around. I ended up reading some article written by a third grade level thinker about how there's different valves but they didn't demonstrate how to actually inflate the presta valve. They actually made some really burnt out half a brain cell comment about how if you don't put the cap back on the Schrader valve that somehow your air is going to leak out after 300 yards. That's when I closed that browser and found your video which was a billion times better than that junk article

My husband just bought me a used bike without either of us realizing it had different types of valves on each tire. So glad I found this video, you’ve saved me so much time and frustration! 😅
Clear, concise and effective tutorial with no waffling. Before this I didn't know you could switch the pump from shrader to presta, and didn't know about opening the valve on a presta and pressing it to loosen it. Now I know both. Many thanks. Subscribed!
Same! I thought it was an external adapter or whole different style pump. I never did like lance Armstrong bikes or 95% of the spandex wearing 5 wide bike pack rats that are common in nice areas.
Superb clear, informative and to the point video. I'd been struggling with the Presta valve on my wife's cheap 2nd-hand bike and was ready to throw in the towel but this explained exactly how to deal with these valves and now the tires are all pumped up and ready to go again.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m really glad the video helped you figure out the Presta valve issue and saved you from throwing in the towel! It can be a bit tricky at first, especially with older bikes, but once you get the hang of it, it's much smoother. I'm happy to hear your tires are all pumped up and ready to go! Hi Anthony, thanks for your great comment🙏. I'm pleased that you found the video useful. Your negatve feelings about presta valves are shared by many other viewers. I hope that hanks to this video you will find them a bit less frustrating.
Your well-edited visuals, paired with the concise and calm narrative, kept THIS nervous novice to bicycle maintenance from pitching, a fit…AND its brand-new mini-pump (which had been promoted as having a head whose internals needed NO reversal to accept either type). I had broken three small, fragile teeth at the very center, which must have been the “universal” feature. EVERYTHING you illustrated matched with what I discovered about my pump when I followed your directions. Your observations and tips regarding the Presta valve, and the attachment/detachment of the pump were very much relevant and appreciated. I will definitely be exploring more of your content. I have ridden for decades, but never had the confidence to work on my bikes myself. Realistically, I won’t be… I will be using your channel’s guidance, and you can be sure I will recommend your channel to so many friends that share my ignorance. THANK you.

Thank you so much for this video. I had zero clue what a Presta valve was when I got my bicycle and found out (thought) that my hand pump would not work on it, but your insightful video showed me otherwise - I had no clue that my hand pump had multiple settings for different kinds of valves.

Thanks for the video, it's such an important and basic thing to be able to do. I had to figure out how to pump up my Presta valve tyres through trial and error and it was a bit frustrating. It's genuinely difficult if someone hasn't shown you how because everyone is used to Schrader valves from cars, motorbikes, and the kind of bicycles we ride when we're kids.
Hey, thanks for the comment🙏. Yes, Presta valves are not as straight forward to use as Schrader ones. I'm glad that you found our video useful and are now more confident in using Presta🙂

Excellent work ! Without your video I would have continued to think that both of my air pumps were defective, and/or that the back innertube on my bike was bad. Then today, i couldn't take the slowly-flattening back tire any more, decided to switch in a new innertube, and lo and behold, neither of my 2 new innertubes would inflate either !!!!! That's when I found your video (you made today's ride the best ride I've had since buying this Sirrus a few months ago). Not only did I learn how to correctly assemble my hand-pump, but now I can use my electric pump properly too, and pass on to others what I've learned from you. Thank you !
Your video is great in spite of my frustration with the Presta valve. You make it very clear and understandable how to air the tire with the Presta valve.
Hi Alicia, thanks so much for your great comment. I'm glad the video helped you navigate the process. If you have any more questions or if there's anything else you'd like assistance with, feel free to let me know. 🙂
A simple technique that I never was taught but always expected to know. I’ve been yelled at for asking to use someone’s pump and then trying to get it to work but they felt that was inappropriate. YT asked how I liked your video so I said it was life changing with five stars, I liked and subbed so hopefully more people will see your video over others. The first suggestion was sooo annoying and awful. I was thrilled to find your video second, but wish it was the first suggestion. Cheers💛
Hi Robert. I'm glad that you liked the video and that you found the answer to your problem👍. And massive Thank You for sharing your opinion with YT. The support we get from people like you means a lot to us🙏. Cheers🙂

I cant seem to pump my presta valve. I saw the brass thing lose and i tightened it and pump again but i still can't pump air into my tube. I gave up and look for solution on yt. And i found this. Now im laughing to what i did 😂
@@cyclemaintenanceacademy I have nominated it the worst invention of mankind. Why I have one in my MTB is beyond me. Since it only needs 1.4bar and normal car valve could handle that just fine.
Brother, you helped me so much, i bought new pump for 25usd and for a week i couldn’t able to ride it. Thanks you i just refunded pump and after few minutes i will ride my bike again😊❤

Hi, thanks for your comment. It looks like you have turned full circle. But don't give up, try a different pump and see if that helps. I hope this helps🙂
Great video. Didn’t realise my pump could work on Presta valve tyres until I watched this video. I was about to go to bike shop to buy a “Presta” pump!! Thank you. 👍
Can anyone honestly tell me why Presta valves exist? Do they have a single advantage over Schrader? Feels like they’re just way more inconvenient and finnicky and have no upsides
It depends. Presta valve is narrower so the rim hole is smaller. That makes the rim stronger. Presta valve is lighter than Schrader. Finally, presta valve can hold more pressure. However, the differences are so marginal and bike tyre manufacturers will soon introduce road tyres that don't require high pressure so these advantages are not noticable for everyday cyclist.
You're welcome. It always make me feel good to read that my videos saved someone's time or money. If you need any more help or have any bike related questions feel free to get in touch. Happy cycling ☺️
Hi Nancy. Good idea if you're struggling with it. Don't forget to check if your rim have a hole enough big to fit a Schrader valve. I hope this helps 🙂
Hi, thanks so much for your kind words! I'm glad the video helped clear up the confusion about using Presta valves. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!
If your tube has a valve that can be replaced then yes, you are correct. However, unfortunately, most standard presta inner tubes come with the valve that can not be replaced.
Not a fan of the presta. My spare bike just has them fitted. glad I've not damaged the valves yet as I'd no idea how to inflate them,m just winged it. My pump has both S & P valve holes, so no pump adjustment needed. Your video put me straight, thanks.
Hey, thanks for the comment! I'm glad the video helped you out with inflating Presta valves. If you have any more questions or need tips, feel free to ask.🙂
Hi John, yes, good question.😂 It's the lock nut that is causing all this problem. First, it needs to be undone and screwed back on each time used. Second, it often bends and snaps when pumping. On the positive side, Presta valve is slightly easier to pump compare to Schrader (especially when using a hand pump) because it has no valve spring to overcome.
You are right Gerald. Schrader is much easier to use. There are some advantages to presta valve though. We compared them both in the video here:th-cam.com/video/2aKvBMYXp3Q/w-d-xo.html
Hey Mark, good question. The main advantage of Presta valves is that they hold more pressure better. That's why you mainly see them on road bike wheels where higher pressure (over 100PSI) is required. Car tyres don't require high pressure (they are usually around 30-35PSI) and Schrader valves are easier to use. That's why they became a standard for motorised vehicles. Tyre companies work now on new types of road tyres where higher pressure is not required to achieve lower resistance so at some point Presta valves might loose their main advantage
@@cyclemaintenanceacademy i dont know if i agree if its true then why Rear shocks and fork shocks still uses Schrader and those holds up to 350psi. All of these should have been Presta from the start
@@marklouieadame thanks for your reply. Do you know what, you are probably right. I've just realised that I've passed on the information that I've been tought many years ago and never questioned it. And what you are saying makes sense. This makes me realy want to dig into it. I will do some research and get in touch with few tyre and tube manufacturers and see if they have any answer to this. I will let you know if they will enlighten me🙂

Wish I knew about this flip when I got a flat this morning several miles from home. I’ve been using the adapter to pump my tires for 25 years and I had the adapter with me this morning but no pump that could use it - or so I thought. I wound up calling my wife to bring me the “real” bike pump, and pumped the replacement tube with the adapter in no time. Presta is a perfect example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. I’m sticking with the adapter.
Hi, I totally understand your frustration! It's always tough dealing with a flat when you're far from home. It's great to hear that you were able to make it work with the adapter in the end, though!
Hey, thanks for the comment and sharing your experience with others. I'm glad that you found our video helpful🙂. If you ever need any more help related to bike maintenance you know where to find our TH-cam channel
I just left my adapter screwed on
i just bought a bike and it had the presta valve and i bought a pump and watched like 3 other videos that didn’t help because i didn’t know that you had to switch the rubber piece inside but once i got that i was able to do it!
Enjoy your rides with properly inflated tyres, and happy cycling!🙂
Thanks Peter I was getting so frustrated and you actually saved me icl ty very much ❤️
Whats wrong with proper valves!? Why make it so much more awkward to carry out the simple task of pumping up a bicycle tyre by putting these stupid delicate valves on, which I had to buy a specialist pump for?
It's a Helpful video, so thanks for posting, but I don't see the point in these valves, apart from making life more difficult
@@nicholasdowling6415 I still don't get what's the point with prostate valves. They are usually found on sport oriented bikes like road and mountain bikes but I still don't understand what advantage they offer.
I think this is pretty obvious after the first time you pump them.
I hate prostate valves.

I'm so glad the video helped! 😅 Dealing with different valve types can definitely be confusing at first. Best wishes,
Clear, concise and effective tutorial with no waffling.
Before this I didn't know you could switch the pump from shrader to presta, and didn't know about opening the valve on a presta and pressing it to loosen it. Now I know both.
Many thanks. Subscribed!
Hey, you're most welcome. I'm glad that the video was helpful.
Invaluable... I don't like Presta valves, but I'm stuck with them for the meantime, and this has been REALLY useful.
THANK you.

Cheers💛

Hey Rob, thanks for the comment. I think that the majority of the viewers can agree with you.

Hi John, thanks for the comment🙏. I'm really pleased that you found the video helpful🙂
@@cyclemaintenanceacademy Ah ok cool, thanks!
Agreed. If it ain't broke...
DON'T FIX IT.

Hi, thanks so much for your kind words! I'm glad the video helped clear up the confusion about using Presta valves. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!
If you break the valve you can always remove it and put a new one in, they are very cheap to buy.
Not sure who invented the Presta valve, but I wonder if he’s had his ass kicked yet
Hi John, yes, good question.😂
It's the lock nut that is causing all this problem.
First, it needs to be undone and screwed back on each time used. Second, it often bends and snaps when pumping.
On the positive side, Presta valve is slightly easier to pump compare to Schrader (especially when using a hand pump) because it has no valve spring to overcome.
@@cyclemaintenanceacademy Thank you for the video and comment, it was very helpful

You are right Gerald. Schrader is much easier to use. There are some advantages to presta valve though. We compared them both in the video here:th-cam.com/video/2aKvBMYXp3Q/w-d-xo.html
@@cyclemaintenanceacademywhy is it all our cars and trucks still uses Schrader valves instead of Presta valves
I thought this wasn’t thing but I guess I’m wrong, I bought a new floor pump because I couldn’t figure it out but this video helped me out so much can’t thank you enough.
Hey, thanks for your comment and sharing your experience with others. I'm glad that you found this video useful🙂
Presta valves can definitely be a bit tricky at times, but it sounds like you’ve got a solid system that works for you. Thanks for sharing your experience!
👍👍👍 awesome explanation on the 2 types an i never knew that about the pump , also if you break the Presta valve it's not useless, 2 things you can do:
* use for repair patches
*cut in half an place inside your bike tyre as extra protection from punctures 👍
Thanks for sharing your tips👍 and thank you for your comment 😁
Thanks! Finally a video that shows every single step, fully detailed! 👏
