I feel like these were just made up on the spot one day in 1902 one day when someone went "woah this hand I have is really funny looking it should definitely be a win" and everyone nodded and agreed
It's funny cuz I posted these just for fun and now if you search for Riichi Mahjong I'm like one of the top posters even though I'm garbage at the game😂 Glad you found the videos helpful!
Thank you! Mahjong soul just had their survey and I mentioned you as one of the youtubers I watch for riichi mahjong content! I hope a sponsorship comes your way because you definitely deserve it!
Good video, slight correction though: While orphans (kokushi musou) is the most common yakuman in sanma, in typical 4 player play the most common yakuman is 4 concealed triplets (suuankou) Also one more note: It is actually advised to go for kokushi musou when you are at around 8 unique honors and terminals since you can't kyuushu kyuhai but you also have a shit hand. Kokushi musou is interesting since it's an amazing defensive hand due to having a ton of typically safe tiles to throw when things get dicey or if the hand dies. It's also advised to go for it at 10+ since you're in 2-shanten or closer anyway
Thanks! I wasn't ranking the Yakumans particularly in order of rarity, just in the order that feels right. Kokushi is much more striking than Suuankou so I felt it fitting to put it first 😎
9:25 The thing i would say about Chuuren Poutou (九蓮宝燈) is that the term "Nine Gates" I say is seems like a mistranslation. It's "Nine Lotus Lanterns." Mahjong Soul and Riichi City represents Chuuren Poutou as Lotus Lanterns. It's probably referring to Gates as waits.
Daisuushi also has responsibility payments like daisangen. Basically don't drop the last wind if someone has called the other 3 winds. Shousuushi isn't affected by this rule. Certain rulesets out there also includes suukantsu for sekinin barai, though this is less common.
thanks for explaining this. I found an essay on youtube detailing all styles (defensive, offensive, balanced) and I would love to see a similar themed video from you Because that youtuber hasn't posted in a while
I think riichi on 13 orphans (and esp 13 waits) is also potentially fine ngl, if done early enough it may be difficult to parse your yakuman and they may want to discard honors from their honor pairs to play safe. The riichi stick is, in my eyes, sometimes also basically a 1000 point fee to add pressure.
Ok this is very off topic from the game but I’m realizing now that a lot of a fighting game characters moves, litchi from blazblue, is based off mahjong stuff, seeing all the names here helped me to see that a little bit
Calling riichi is almost always better for any yakuman that must be concealed, like suuankou or 13 wait kokushi. Since you must draw the tile yourself, you'd actually prefer to intimidate your opponents into playing defensively and slowing down their hands, which increases your chances of getting it.
I will make a video on this eventually as this is a very important part of Riichi Mahjong. Furiten basically means you've thrown your own winning tile(s) out. For example if you were 7-9 ball waiting a 8 ball, but you've thrown an 8 ball at some point during that round, you will be in furiten. That's simple to grasp but it also extends to multiple tiles. For example, if you have a 23 ball, waiting 1 & 4 ball. Even if you've only thrown 1 ball, you will be furiten and CANNOT RON on either 1 or 4 ball. Same case if you've only thrown 4 ball. It may seem like a detriment at first- however, you can use this to your advantage when you consider that everybody else must follow this rule too. This means that what someone else has discarded- they cannot ron you on that tile. That's the base of DEFENSE in Mahjong.
-see this video -boot up MahjongSoul next day -get a kyuushu kyuhai hand -go ballin' and try for kokushi musou instead -reach tenpai -forget that I shouldn't call riichi -someone else deals into open tanyao💀 -next hand -deal into double riichi within 3 turns -next hand -attempt for kokushi musou again -everyone discards all red dragons when I'm 2 tiles away from finishing my hand by end of round💀 Yeah, I think I'm not going for yakuman ever again 💀💀💀🤣🤣🤣
As I said in the segment at 15:42, if you want to push it, push it. There's no strict indication on when to push or pull because it depends on which round it is, which seat you're in, how fast you were, what position you're in (leading or losing), and then finally how close you are to actually hitting it from the start. The only situation I'd push without thinking is if I'm 1-3 tiles out and there's no other option. Even then I'd still fold if the situation on the board changes.
@@JouzuJuls I understand there's no strict indication but examples like the 9 terminal exhaust is a good time to go for 13 orphans as a good call to try. For other hands, advice would is 1-3 away from the start to go for a yakuman then? That helps
@@MochaxMatcha for 13 orphans, 9 tiles itself isn't enough for me to try it in normal circumstances (in ranked) unless I'm desperate and losing hard. If I was leading I'd hit draw. For me to try it while leading (or not losing badly) in ranked, I'd need 10-12 tiles from the get go. Something else like Suuankou, Id rather take the Chiitoi or the Toitoi because it's much safer. If it comes it comes, if not, play the safer option. Daisangen I'd try for if I have 2 of the 3 in pairs, especially if you can pon 2 of them, people usually fold cuz they're scared of Daisangen. Again everything is a case by case basis with lots of factors. Oshihiki is about reading the situation and making the right call, not remembering set rules 😎😉
Never played mahjong before but this seems very complex. Not sure if its because im stupid or because its 5am where i live atm... Im gonna hope its the latter 😂
My Mahjong videos are also quite helpful for people learning the game so I upload both! There will be more Japanese learning videos to come as well as Mahjong guides! 😁

Most make sense, within the rules of the game. While the rest are just allowing a win if you start off really lucky.
1902?
Isn't that game like hundreds of years old
Just started learning mahjong like 2-3 weeks ago and your videos've been a very great help! So happy to see a new one.

*lil smile* i got it once

@@JouzuJuls Fair enough kokushi is probably the most iconic yakuman
I can’t imagine how annoying it was to get all the footage for this. Zaki is a big help 😂
I just started playing 4 days ago, and today I went from 4'th place to 1'th place with a 13-orphans in the fourth game, never felt more alive
these videos have been super informative and entertaining, keep it up!

how do u get the cat tiIes theyre so cute :3
They were part of an event, it should (hopefully) rerun. If not I'm sure they'll give other tile variations in the future!

Awesome video! I'm new to mahjong and MS so this helped big time. You got a sub and like from me. Bonus han to you for using the Mr. Lahey clip lol
i actually did my first yakuman while watching this video lmao, i wanted to understand the rules and it just happened
I just started played like a month and get 4 yakuman ready on 13 orphan
They just never let me win
That's the hard part, once you get on Tenpai it's like the universe raises everybody's alarm and you'll just never get the last one 🙄🤪
when you have a yakuman but the other player ron or tsumo for 1 han
couldn't be me
Funny thing is my first Yakuman i ever got was Suukantsu and it was just casual game before going to bed.

Hello there. I noticed that word 'furiten' would appear and sometimes I can't win even the opponent throw out my winning tiles. Why is that?

-everyone discards all red dragons when I'm 2 tiles away from finishing my hand by end of round💀
