      yeah I hadn't seen much on it floating around the interwebz, so I figured I might as well share my thoughts on it and help clarify. Wish my video feed was a little better to see all the ghost branches. If it was my every day spot I would of figured out the lines. I've gotten to the point where I only throw on an action cam if I'm doing some commerical work, or if there's something really special I think I might want to capture. I've found most people aren't interested in watching how I fly for minutes on end, but it's really interesting that people will watch a short goggle dvr clip. Most ot the time I'm just focusing on having fun flying, and video is a far distant thought.

      In 2022 that’s most definitely the case for a lot of pilots. By now even the general public has seen and now has a limited attention span on flying vids. I watch bacons channel for the comic relief he brings and he just seems like a super nice guy so I support channels like his. I almost always fly with an action cam, but that is mostly just for me. I agree with you that most people couldn't care less about flight edits unless they are cinematic shots of interesting places. I just like to make something out of the footage for the creative process more than anything, and dipping my toe into the videography side of this stuff is a fun way to do it. Usually I just set my GoPro settings once and fly it like that every time without any variation. If I want to add a creative touch in post I will, but I agree that the camera isn't there for the flight or the quality of it at all. It is all about the background track and how the colors add to that for me, and sometimes I watch my videos back just to feel them as a visualizer for the music, lol.

    It’s great tech, that has to be said! It’s nice looking clearly good enough for TH-cam, but I still don’t see it replacing my GoPros (and not just cuz I dislike DJI).
    One GoPro is still a hell of a lot cheaper then an additional set of goggles plus AU per quad. Also: camera settings are set once per session on my GoPro flying different quads, instead of changing it up for every single quad.
    Then you have pilot feed vs cinematic settings, can’t strap an O3 to a mountain bike or a helmet, and although I don’t race I seriously dislike variable and/or high latency.
    To each their own, but for me, all-in-all I’d rather take the weight penalty, cuz every other practical reason points me towards using my GoPro.
    I prefer 4:3, but im still getting me a 16:9 goggle in the near future as the FOV is big enough to also operate at 4:3 for 4:3 native cameras.

      It is indeed a great system. The range and penetration of the video link is for sure the best option outside of really long range focused scenarios. I agree that a whole fleet of these things makes no sense...I might have 2 and that is going to be about it, lol. Having a nice camera that you can swap in and out starts to make the most sense when you have a decent size fleet and you don't want a bunch of random parts configurations running around. Where I am most excited about this system is in the 3" or cinewhoop realm. I think for a small quad, being able to get decent footage without carrying an action cam at all is going to make a lot of sense, and for cinewhoops having a backup recording may also come in handy plenty of times. Personally, the Bones is still going to ride on top of this O3 quad...I just like the creative control it allows for way more than the convenience and weight saving of the air unit. Ultimately though, for those people who just want to dump it off the SD card, throw a track behind it, and post it up, this may win out.

    • @JekleFPV
      @JekleFPV ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BaconNinjaFPV I see your point and feel the same for the most part. In shear image quality and penetration, no question it’s the most capable system! (Low light not so much, but that’s a whole other can of worms)
      But considering I already have a fleet (and action cams), spending almost a grand to put the O3 system on only a couple of quads to save some weight on those just doesn’t make sense to me at this point.
      I can crash and destroy a few naked GoPros for that price if I really need to save some weight. I already do on my LR quads and cinewhoops, but I’ve never really crashed any of those.
      Penetration has never really been an issue for me (😏), nothing I can’t push through. I find that a little breakup actually helps me with orientation of the quad relative to my position. So for freestyle I’ll make due with my hero 9 or my peanut. (Not to mention the rumors about an upcoming new Session.)
      If I ever move into paid gigs and/or cinelifters it might make sense, but until that time (or if the price ever comes down significantly), I’ll take the weight penalty for granted like we have done for years.
      That’s just my take, but everyone should decide for themselves what their priorities are for their applications.

    Hi...thanks for this
    2.7K is good quality and much easier on the memory and processing.
    I realize you did not stabilize the footage. I rarely do. However, the ease and simplicity of DJI stabilization may change my mind.
    I've never used a gopro, I'd kill it for sure. I think Bones was Gopro''s realization and answer to losing money on fpv replacements. So small a market, they couldn't identify the failed gopros specifically with fpv crashes. Now, they can...just like dji with their session 5 knock off.
    When you say flat color profile, is it D-Log, or D-Cinelike? If D-Cine, I'd just as soon record in normal. Color correction (white balance adjustment) and color grading is a PITA. In my opinion, LUTs are too specific to look good universally.
    i'd like to see same video without the LUT, which serves it's purpose for this video, but is more effort than I want to put into it. So, I got you beat there.
    Also, if you can give your experience of G1V2 versus G2, that could help. $650 is a lot of money for an upgrade to V2. Is it worth it?

    • @BaconNinjaFPV
      @BaconNinjaFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are very welcome!! Yes, the ability to just throw Rock Steady on might just get more people to stabilize their footage since it is so simple. I just never do since my flight style really doesn't look natural with any kind of stabilization, lol. By flat, I meant the D-Cinelike that DJI offers...not as good as GoPro flat, but it is ok. I like to use LUT's, but usually use my own primary conversion tables first and I hardly ever use the same LUT twice with the same settings. I just like that added layer of creativity! I will for sure have more vids on the system where I just show the raw out of cam footage because I agree that lots of people will just leave it on regular color and put it straight up that way. As for the G2 vs V2, I really don't think it is worth the money at this point. If you care about nothing except the quality of the pilot feed, then the G2 has a little bit of an edge, but not worth the money to me. The OLED's and diopter adjustments are worth it for some as well, but I really only care about being able to see obstacles and past that I am not picky.

    I had to hit stop really quick to add my thoughts and I think it’s fuckin killer!! Question, being a n00b and only shooting cinematic until I put the 03 unit in my first freestyle build, what, if any modifications can be made to lessen that blind spot(nice choice of music btw) caused by the recessed camera mount? With the camera footage being so rad, your videos will take on a new dynamic with the kickass video quality while taking off a lot of the added weight by being able to lose the action. camera. The trick then becomes protecting the 03 unit from crash damage. Fantastic informational video, Bacon! You covered a lot of growing concerns with the difference in the 2 and V2 goggles paired with the limited performance in the 2’s. Great job!!

    • @BaconNinjaFPV
      @BaconNinjaFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol, yeah I thought the lyric was appropriate for the use case! Lots of frames are already or currently redesigned with keeping the plates out of view in mind for the O3 system. When it comes to this particular frame, there are new side plates which soft mount the camera and keep them out of view...I am just waiting on them to come in :( It is a trade off between protecting the cam and getting the most out of it for sure. Personally, I don't like the limitations of the color grading on this camera so for my pilot preference I will keep running the Bones on top and take the weight hit. Not that this quality isn't perfectly acceptable, i just want those creative controls back that the color depth of a different camera gives me. Everything is a balance!

      Yes, I sure did update the firmware. I basically upgraded to 0606 in the FPV series, then rooted, then updated to the latest in the consumer drone side. Now that I have done that, when I go back to the FPV assistant it shows a totally different firmware path than it did before. You will for sure lose the ability to do the power output hack...which is sad. Personally though, I found the range and penetration to be more than sufficient as is just running the normal 700mw output but that is totally up to what you are doing with the quad.

      ooooooof....I can't pick favorites, lol. They are just two tools for different things, and they are both good and bad. I will say though, at the moment with the current HDZ VTX's, for freestyle DJI wins. You just can't beat this range and penetration. I am not personally really picky about the image quality for the pilot feed, which probably isn't a normal thing for most pilots. I just want to be able to see branches and obstacles before I hit them, and both systems do that for sure. DJI just does it better more often with it's style of break up, even if it does mean less consistent latency. Now for racing, HDZ wins all day every day!

    • @BaconNinjaFPV

      It does come out a little dark, and that is mostly just due to the exposure algorithm and color depth in this cam. The shadow details aren't great, and since I was going for minimal effort I didn't try to push the correction into making them look better. I think HDZ is a great system, everything just has its particular use case. For my micros HDZ does a realllllly great job, I just fly such large spots with bigger quads that it struggles with range and penetration. • @BaconNinjaFPV
      @BaconNinjaFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @razorblade7108
      @razorblade7108 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, thanks for the quick reply!
      Well I guess the two biggest advantages of the O3 vs. Air Unit and Caddx Vista are that you don't have to put an action cam on your quad, so there's less weight, less cost, less drag and less damage when crashing and second the H265 encoding allows for much better image quality when the signal gets weaker. Below 5 Mbps the old system would produce a very muddy image while the O3 will still produce a very clear image. And the situations where the signal gets bad are exactly those where you need a clear image to control the quad (inside buildings, close to trees, close to the ground etc.). I don't get why they don't have an option to record at lower FPS, they would just have to skip frames. Also it should be no problem to receive the raw image for FPV and record a processed image. Makes no sense that all settings apply to both outputs (except for RealSteady).
      Nonetheless I think those are just minor downsides and overall it's a good upgrade. The fact that it's too big for most frames and the camera would pick up the props can easily be solved by creating a mount where the action cam would normally go.

      @@BaconNinjaFPV Actually I found the changelog of an update from January which enables 120 FPS recording with the Goggles 2 and 30 FPS recording with both the V2 and Goggles 2. So I assume the latest firmware did indeed enable the option to record at different framerates than what you're flying with. The Goggles 2 video feed is still limited to 60 or 100 FPS and the V2 video feed is limited to 60 or 120 FPS. If that's truly how it works and you don't just receive a 30 FPS video feed and some frames are skipped on the Goggles 2 when recording in 120 FPS, that makes the O3 pretty much perfect.
      The update also enabled 10-bit D-Cinelog for even more contrast and dynamic in the images.

      It is a hard choice; you aren't alone on this one. DJI has better image quality, but the latency is variable based on signal quality. HZero has the fixed consistent low latency, but the image quality is lower because it uses less RF channel width. The other hard part is every pilot is going to react to that variable DJI latency differently. Some people can just adjust to it and keep on going, but others need that fixed latency to consistently perform. When it comes to range, DJI wins.....at the moment, lol. We will have to see what the increased range and penetration modes do for HDZero. It is a very very tough choice at the moment given all of the recent HD link advancements.

      Lol, some really valid points! It really comes down to what the pilot wants from the footage, and for some it is just not going to work at this quality. Personally I am going to keep running my Bones because I like the resolution, color depth, and dynamic range, but some people just don't want to do anything to their footage outside of toss a track behind it and upload. As for the goggle feed, it is absolutely a terrific system. Range an penetration are about as good as it gets for video links in the current market...as long as you aren't going over 13km, lol. I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on it!

      @@BaconNinjaFPV thanks for your reasonable response. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for FPV. That’s what makes it so interesting.
      For anyone reading, I would also heavily suggest watching Chris Rosser’s video posted today that depicts the heat problems of the O3 module. On full power, with poor airflow, or in a hot climate, there’s a considerable risk of the module overheating and shutting down.

      @@Flumphinator For sure, FPV is great because everything is so centered around what the individual pilot needs are. It makes it more of an art than a science, and for me that is one of the many things that I find so interesting about it! As for the operating temps, I can't wait to test that in the Texas summer with some real world use case. It is either going to live, or die, there is no in between, lol. Ambient temps of 110+ should put it in the high end of what it can do and that should be pretty interesting!

      @@BaconNinjaFPV as a Dallasite, I think I’ll stick with Walksnail and HDZero! I’ve seen surface temps on construction sites above 160. That sun is no joke.
