People wanna make decluttering content, but instead of helping neighbors, family and friends with their spaces, they just buy a ton of stuff to declutter. I'm decluttering because a lot of my clothing doesn't fit properly anymore, but I've been doing it slowly over a year lol. I bought like 5-6 pieces of clothing, but that's it.
edit: If you live in America, and need to donate clothing Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) does picks up. All you gotta do is set up a date for the pickup, label the boxes or bags, and then set them outside an hour or so before hand. I've done it a couple of times, and I know my clothing is going to go to people who need it instead of a landfill.

My family has always had a system of getting rid of clothes, they were called "giveaways". My aunt always knew a family that had daughters our age so she'd just give the clothes to her.
I'd always give my little sister first dibs tho 😂

    • @kayviana

Honestly the best way to do things, my family is huge so ours is quite similar. Siblings have first dibs, then cousins, then friends of the family.

Yes!!! I used to get my cousin's clothes! Her family had much more money than ours and I was always SO happy to get her discards (which were always still in excellent condition).

I appreciated this. I am actually doing a whole house declutter, but my plan is for it to be a one-and-done. I'm looking at how I got here and how to not get here in the future. Too many decluttering videos seem to be like you say: performance. I don't plan on being a minimalist. I just want to be able to enjoy what I have.

    • @kayviana

I think it’s lovely that you’re setting up plans to avoid this in the future. It can very difficult. In the past I found that shopping was a hobby. Creating hobbies that have nothing to do with shopping can be so helpful for redirecting your time. A little bit of change at a time is the way to go. Be kind to yourself during this process. Thanks for leaving a comment as well :)

From an European (Swiss) POV, the USA has a massive overconsumption issue. I think it also relates to the appalling work/life balance you guys have. You have very little free time compared to most of the world so I suppose that buying shit gives you that little spark of happiness and feeling that the insane hours at work being worth it. Also living with debt as if it's the normal/logical thing to do is mind boggling to me.

For that feeling of "get rid of the same old same old" I rearrange furniture and decorations I already own, switch up curtains and bedding between rooms, when it's warmer weather and blankets are used less I'll use them to cover the sofa or something.
Honestly just switching things you already have around gives just as much improvement to that feeling, and has an extra sense of achievement attached

I love this and I agree 100%. One youtuber (Caroline Wrinkler) was saying we can do this with frames as well. She keeps a few in storage and changes her frames up on the wall when she needs a change. Some parents do that with their kids' toys as well (keep a few in storage and rotate them so the kids get "new" toys they had forgotten about lol

We only de-clutter around Christmas because we don't have a ton of stuff. I have my art supplies all of which I use, we have books which have all been read, and a limited amount of clothes between myself and my partner. I own 4 pairs of pants and maybe like 15 shirts. No seasonal clothes except like 3 hoodies.

I got my stepfather a framed autograph from one of his favorite star gate actors (met him at a con) and some Milano cookies and he was so happy 😂 if people love you you don’t have to go all out, every Christmas I make like 6-8 different varieties of cookies and put them in those cute dollar tree boxes they get in at the holidays and put ribbon on them. I’m not spoiling anything but art displays like Omega Mart here in Las Vegas are interesting bc all of the products look and are color coded like real brands, but they’re off- like you’re in another dimension. We’re such overconsumers here in America we can look at these fake products and know the real product name. How weird is that to think about? 😂

Just a fun tip, Area 15 where it is located has “experience passes” so you can buy one of those and access multiple attractions there (I forget which tiers have OMEGA MART but it’s 2 of them) and it’s a way better value than booking them all.
