That was the point for it to become epidemic, so that people get a chance to realize their overcomsuption and its consequences on their lives, the environnement, etc... If they do it genuinely though. Doing it every month to just rebuy more clothes is really even worse than how it was before. I agree that's the problem when someone has a successful YT channel about decluttering : what will they do once they decluttered everything? I see it through the years and got a bit disappointed, leading people to have to change style constantly to stay relevant... that's not really minimalism

Allllll of this! I am guilty of the once a month look around but for me that's like i had some items i didnt get around to, or i wasn't 100% sure about an item and am revisiting seeing how i used it in a month/in 2 months/3 months etc. I have a declutter box which is if i read a book on my shelf and didnt like it, it goes in the declutter box rather than back on my bookshelf, same for utensils that ive since found/come to realise i have no use for and etc. Pet toys that my pets have decided they don't like, in the box. Then when the box is full, i sort it as it needs sorting and etc. People have found this so weird that I'm not just doing this constant massive declutter? Sure sometimes we find a box we didnt get to before or we forgot to do the closet and such but like how do these people find all this stuff. If I get the declutter bug, I ask my family if they need any help with a space and get stuck in with them! It's so insane to me.

I really like your point about decluttering via people in your life instead of just donating to goodwill! A woman in my church just gave me a bunch of tights she was getting rid of, and I just texted her to see if she wanted my old coloring books for her kids lol. A lot of people don't think to do that, or maybe don't have anyone in their life they have that kind of relationship with. This is probably a seperate point but it just feels like another example of people being isolated and having no community because every relationship is commodified

It's always important to mention that trends of cleanliness/aesthetic are.. inherently classist. You never see poverty declutters because for us that means getting rid of a few articles of clothing that don't fit and picking up around the house. The trend of modernizing every replaceable object is something that you have to AFFORD to do. I live with different furniture from an ARRAY of decades because we've never been able to afford replacements, only to get new furniture we NEED. Consumerism can impact anyone, but people with money who care about status will always be at the highest risk of overpurchasing.. leaving things gentrified for the rest of us.

My decluttering only accures to my clothes, and i have a reason! Untill a little before, i have been growing, and i needed to let go of a lot of things i grew out of! I gave them to my best friends little sister and my cusins! Or trown away if broken (they already lived through 3 girls, thay can be broken) hahah I am a collector, and i looove my thing to the point, that I will be repairing the rhings as long as I can. I just love them. As a kid I had a lot of toys, but what kind? I have a colection of a figurine horses, that were expesive, and now when I'm older, I joke with my sister (that plaued with them too, and have their own horse collections) that someday if we need, we'll sell them and be rich XDDD they are collectables after all, and after some thime, we do have some more expensive examples 😏 I am a buyer, but also a collector, so I don't trow away the tings, untill I need to. Espessially after i stopped being a little kid :))

debt free, i dont buy like ... everything, but i do buy expensive things that im into. most items that i like are like 200-600$, i own little but nice things, works for me.

This is the first video I’ve seen of yours! I really love the way you broke down the reality of overconsumption! My favor always has the thought process of “recycle, reduce, reuse” as well as “do I actually have a need for this or do I just want it, how often will I use it” before buying anything. My parents were within the lower middle class to ‘middle’ middle class, so we always had to pass down things and do our best to maintain the things we had to make them last. I do also think some of the problem is the actual quality of things in the stores today. I’ve had more clothes fall apart in the last 5 years than I ever have. I still have clothes from 2008 that are in good condition, where I can get items off seemingly similar quality that fall apart or rip with a 2 year span.

Vestiaire Collective is the same. It’s hit or miss. I bought a bag which had obviously passed their first phase authenticity process because it was for sale. I went to sell it myself and Vestiaire bounced it and hence I realised via them it was counterfeit.

diamond mining is now very regulated as far as the "blood diamond" scandal goes. its also a very expensive process. opening a diamond mine takes about 12 years and hundreds of millions if not billions of investment dollars. the fact of the matter is that while yes their prices are extremely inflated due to marketing, we simply would not have diamonds if they didnt sell for so much money. the truth is that they are expensive to mine and thus they sell for a lot. what would be the point of investing so much money and time into mining for them if the mine owners couldnt quadruple their original investment? natural diamonds are a gift to us humans because they tell us so much important information about our earths history and what processes are required to form diamonds in the first place over billions of years. i rest my case lol.

Commenting because I think you deserve a boost for this video. Also, I think it's wild how decluttering caught on with youtubers doing hauls- while still continuing to do hauls. But then again, many people seem to shop like a youtuber even though their jobs are something else. I kind of understand, we all feel more and more anxious about the future, but it's still wasteful.

We only de-clutter around Christmas because we don't have a ton of stuff. I have my art supplies all of which I use, we have books which have all been read, and a limited amount of clothes between myself and my partner. I own 4 pairs of pants and maybe like 15 shirts. No seasonal clothes except like 3 hoodies.
