@@seeleygirl6178 i dont think she was referring to the kind of quantity of clothes that can end up being collected over decades. I think she was speaking of when influencer who do tons of hauls and stuff do a declutter and the amount of clothes they have gained so quickly is crazy
@@seeleygirl6178I loved the video. 22 years in my space, but the fact that she let us in on the dilemma’s and the timelines was still helpful. Considering size and time, maybe we could run a calculation. She has …500sf? (Can’t recall exactly). And needed 7 days. So for me @ 22 years, or 264 months: 1/2 day X # months= 132 days. My living space is 900sf, plus the entire basement and a small garage with more stuff, so based on actual use of non living spaces, let’s say 1500sf. So 132 days x 3 (using 500 sf as her apt size, and rounding my sq footage considering storage)= 396 days. That seems like way too much to bite off, so I’m going to use this estimate to forgive myself for needing time, and break it into manageable chunks of closet, kitchen, storage closets, etc., plus hire help, for example for the garage and basement.
@@Trenchant468 I don't mean this in a mean way, but hearing this makes me so grateful I don't have a basement, limited attic space, and only a one-car garage that I am meticulous about not letting get out of control (I have reorganized my parents' two garage and attic multiple times, ugh). I am not judging people who have basements, but it seems to me, as someone who has never lived in an area where basements are possible, that unless they are finished living spaces, basements just become scary dumping grounds. Is this the case for most basement owners? Just curious. We are too low-lying with a high water table and swamps for basements where I live on the southeast coast of the U.S.
This is so realistic. U didn’t need to buy bunch of new organizers just to declutter, clean up, and organize your things. You made use of what’s available and what you already have. You also showed that you need to invest time and effort to do this and it’s okay to take it one day at a time. This video motivated me to clean and declutter my room and our living room, thank you so much this video!
Yes! I just watched another channel going from horder to «minimalist» and after throwing A lot away she bought A ton of fancy boxes and jars to display and put the things she had left in.
As a plant person, I am immensely proud of you. Getting rid of plants that do not spark joy is the path to freedom. Also, YAY for unrealistic goals that take longer to complete than we think they will because they get us MOVING and that is the point. Good work, Gabi.
You are not a trash hoarder. You are a responsible person who doesn't want to be wasteful. This will help you in the future to accumulate less unnecessary stuff. Also, if you keep up regular decluttering over time, giving away stuff others can still use is much easier because it's just a couple of things here and there. You did great with this big reset!
The fact you did this bit by bit over a longer period of time is actually SO motivating. Smashing it out in a weekend/week is just not doable for so many of us, but this is actually achievable. Thank you!
Girl you KILLED IT. Too many times you see people advertise a giant declutter then they get rid of barely anything. No false advertisement here! Great job ❤
I’m like that with gift wrap 😂 I usually do end up using a lot of it, but I do keep pretty much all of the nice tissue paper and gift bags I get because why throw them out?? 😆
Decluttering has helped me take stock of what is important to me over time. First time I did a large declutter, it was mostly stuff I had accumulated over the years that had lost their connection to me in the present. It was like finding myself in all this stuff I had. So now what I do have reflects me and makes me happier, even if it still seems like a lot at times. I also have a better understanding of what I enjoy so when I purchase new things they stick around longer and I don't need as much.
OHHH YESS I relate to all of this so much. I wanna get to that point where truly everything I own feels relevant but I think it’ll be an ongoing process to get there!
I haven't met a single other person in my friend group that "hoardes" items for sustainability reasons other than me!! that was super validating that you shared that with us. I thank you cause seeing you let go has given me inspiration to do the same. For example, I keep every single gift bag and wrapping paper I ever receive.... like for what!?
i do the same thing for sustainability reasons too!! i have old bubble mailers and envelopes from cards people have written and paper gift bags??? why???? because i might need it one day 💀💀💀enough is enough
Me, I do! I even have styrofoam because I don't know how to recycle it....quite often I give non recyclable things to my son to make things out of....so it gets one more use before it goes to the local incinerator or landfill 😬 we minimise waste and compost and recycle everything that we can, and walk/bike/bus/train everywhere...I struggle to throw out sticks with holes in too 😆
i just love how realistic this video is. decluttering is exhausting, tiring, messy and.... sometimes you dont feel satisfied after doing it. and of course, its not a process thats made in three days.... btw, rest in peace roald
thank you for the courage to share how most homes look like, not straight to the result of a clean and curated place, it helps people like me who are starting to declutter and gives us a good spirit to carry on
5:37 THIS PART IS TOO REAL 😭 I love this video because your apartment doesn't look like an IKEA showroom. It's much more realistic and has so much personality.
Please film more declutter videos in the future if you do them! This was great. Stuff is constantly coming into our lives and I have found it helpful to loosely follow a every month get rid of 30 things for 30 days” rule. Helps me reflect on what I allow in my space that takes up physical/mental energy!
I actually love that you put the dates for each day that you worked on this because it’s so hard!! Lots of people just do it in a solid week but after like a couple hours I’m just wiped! Much love for just taking it at a good pace and knowing that you do better when you come back fresh because same!
Watching this as motivation to declutter my room. I am a massive sentimental hoarder and a “what if I need it” hoarder but I loved when you said that you could always repurchase something if you ever needed it/wanted it in the future but right now you don’t. That mindset instantly made me think of how much I could get rid of because I never use it and I’m just keeping it in case i ever do.
I encourage you to engage with a local buy nothing group. A lot of donations end up in landfills. It can be time-consuming but a buy nothing group has a higher success rate of rehoming items in my experience. It also helps you feel like you're not throwing things away.
Edit: for anyone wondering my couch is from Floyd! She’s my daughter and I love her. Wooohooo!! Hope u enjoy watching my quest to SIMPLIFY MY STUFF. Can anyone relate to my trash hoarding tendencies? Plz say yes 😅
Ugh yes, I also keep random packaging like the stuff you had in the top of your closet! Sometimes it's really high quality, well-designed packaging and feels so sad to throw away?? But I have also not found a use for any of it in the years I've been hoarding it, so... (The one exception was a cookie tin that I now use to store sewing supplies!)
Yes I can relate to the box hoarding. Guilty! I am actually in the middle of cleaning my apt and getting rid of stuff. Your video has given me a boost to keep on going. Lol not a wise choice doing it while I am on PTO but it has to be done. 😊 😊😊
I 100% do lol, I will say that going to the container store and getting a label maker helps so much and makes everything so pretty, I feel like it makes me try harder to stay organized
I definitely get the box/packaging hoarding! One thing I'll say - I regret getting rid of certain types of gift bags, shipping paper and good tissue paper, but I never regret getting rid of old boxes and styrofoam. When it comes to giftwrap, anything that's sparkly or shiny isn't recyclable. If I can reuse packaging paper as giftwrap, it's recyclable for the giftee and relieves some of that guilt in a purposeful way :). In regard to recycling - I was a recycling educator for two years and have been in the sustainability industry for 12. If any viewers aren't sure what they can recycle, please remember NOT to recycle according to what the packaging says (kudos to tofu goob for educating herself and knowing little strips of paper aren't recyclable!). Recycling is LOCAL and varies. Check out your recycle hauler's website, municipality site, and local advocacy group info. Tons of good info, just not from product manufacturers :( If you're feeling a lot of guilt about your waste stream, try to shop your home first, then hit the thrift stores before buying new (both options are 100% guilt free)
honestly this was so motivating to watch because it's so real. i relate to a lot of the things you hang onto for longer than necessary like boxes, empty plant pots, etc and feel a lot of guilt and sadness abt the idea of getting rid of things but this video makes me feel a lot less intimidated by those feelings. thank you for showing me that this is achievable for me too
I TOTALLY relate to keeping things around because you hate throwing stuff away!! It is one of the biggest hurdles for me when decluttering, and it’s so overwhelming. Glad I’m not alone in that! Also this popped up in my recommended videos and I’m so glad it did-instant subscribe because I dig your vibe! ✨
This is the BEST declutter video I’ve ever seen, I can’t even describe why, you’re so just relatable about hoarding everything but seeing you still be so productive and realistic about getting rid of things you don’t need or use gives me SO MUCH motivation ! I will be coming back every time I need to declutter from now on, brb about to go and tackle my own clothes rn
I tried starting my decluttering journey March 2023 when I had a full week off of work. I agree, I regret taking that time to do that rather than just not be stressed out. I also only went through my clothes and books in that week. I got rid of 90 books and 4-5 bags of clothes but then I also struggled with how to get rid of them and it wasn't until July I finally had a garage sale, took them to a used clothes donation place and sold my books at the used bookstore. Now it's getting to be the end of the year and this video has motivated me to remember the rest of my house and just go for it!
Hi, I really loved your video, it's honest and real!!! Decluttering is hard and tiring because in addition to having to manage a lot of stuff, we still have to make a lot of decisions (what stays, what will be donated, what will be sold, what is recyclable and what is trash)... this is very intense for our brain. I lived two weeks of decluttering at the end of 2024 and it was a relief when it was over: first because it was finally over and second because I felt lighter and my house became more spacious and functional. I loved your video and your honest speech at the end! A positive effect on my life after decluttering: I started buying only the essentials which reduced my expenses (now it is much more intentional and conscious) and the feeling of "non-consumerism" is wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
im the biggest fan of decluttering videos(im basically monica geller irl) and i have quite easily seen every video out there on decluttering. but girl this is VERY easily the most satisfying and genuine decluttering video ive ever laid my eyes on. instant follow.
Learning about fabric recycling has really helped me in my own de-cluttering journey! There are places (sometimes bins or clothing stores depending on where you are geographically) were you can take you unusable fabrics like destroyed shoes or holey socks and they'll be recycled! Not a perfect solution, but one step above the landfill!
I know you posted this video 3 months ago, but it really did help me. I was searching youtube for motivation and searched best way to declutter an apartment and yours was one that showed in the results. I love seeing the reality of it taking you 7 days and that you had to take breaks. I get very distracted and discouraged thorough out the process. And I as well get overwhelmed with what I want to keep and how I will dispose of or get rid of the items I'm not using. Thank you for being real and sharing your decluttering process!
I love this. I related to you so much, I often struggle with feelings of guilt when throwing things away or giving them away. It's refreshing to see someone also has the same problem, and seeing them manage it. Thank you! 🩷
i am currently binge watching minimalism, declutterring and cleaning videos to motivate me to sort out my hell hole of a bedroom, which has been a year in the making 😅 thanks so much for sharing your journey to a better apartment!!!!!
Wow! That was a real intensive effort! It took me many more days than 7 days to declutter my place, so I’m in awe! 😍 I loved all your comments along the way 😅👍
This was SO motivating. I usually watch a lot more advice type videos on minimalist “experts” lol, but this was way more motivating for me. I got a ton decluttered while watching/listening to this! Love your energy and vibe! (I know this was over a year ago but still wanted to leave a positive comment because today it was so helpful for me!)
I’m so glad I found someone doing this in a small apartment with like normal things lol. Books and art supplies is so hard for me. But I have NO space for hobbies. Thanks for posting!
Decluttering for me is such a fun experience! It's sometimes a struggle for me to differentiate between "I like and will use it this" and "I don't like this/I like this but not in a way where I can use it" when thinking about what things I want to keep, but I'm getting better at trusting my decisions. I'm glad you got to simplify your space!
I approach my clutter with like this same mindset omg! like I keep SO much with good intention but then it all just snowballs and I have to force myself to be realistic, while still challenging myself to get rid of things as sustainably as my situation allows. I appreciate your transparency so much.
This has been the most real and relatable decluttering video I’ve found ever - thank you for sharing your journey. I share some of the same struggles with letting go of things and can apply what I’ve seen here. Absolutely love your approach
This video is everything. The mindset that you have about guilt and hoarding is exactly how/why I have little weird piles of useless stuff all over my little apartment. I’ve tried several times to declutter but I’m re-inspired to tackle it again. Thank you! ❤️
This is the first decluttering video out of the hundreds I've watched that brought me joy, motivated me, and made me excited to declutter. It was so helpful to watch your realistic process and allow myself grace to not commit to doing it all at once and perfectly, i.e. fancy containers, complicated systems, and mental warfare. LOL! Thanks so much for the inspiration and for sharing this with us.
Your video came up in my suggestions while sitting on the couch trying to find the courage to fold my laundry. Now, I am watching this video while folding my laundry - you gave me the motivation. Thank you 🙏🏼
Best video on the internet . 71 years old. 600 square feet apartment Two storage rooms your video motivational me! Thanks for being so honest. You rock!
The first video of yours that I've seen, and I really enjoyed watching. I like seeing what stuff people have, and then what they value and what they discard. I find the whole process quite fascinating!
I struggle alot with throwing away things that literally have no use anymore, because i attach some sort of sentimental value to them, even to the most stupid things ever (like packaging of something i dont even own anymore), so your video helped me alot to realize im not alone in this and that it is possible to declutter and separate from the things i dont need in life!
Intentional buying is a big part of the decluttering process. Bringing things into your space from now on that are purposeful and quality can mean you buy a lot less, but attach more meaning to those new things so they last you longer as well.
this is awesome, you have a ton of coriander seeds, too many plant pots, and a ton of soil... i see a mini coriander farm growing in your home, then once they all turned into little herb pots, you have homegrown gifts for everyone :-D
Damn.. "I'm really prepared for stuff I'm not even doing" hit me! I laughed out loud and replayed several times. Gonna repeat that line when I start decluttering all my unnecessary packing supplies tomorrow.
I feel you, man. This is always the vibe as someone who has inherited the mindset of "but what if I could use that for something else?" as if I don't forget I have those things in any instance I could have used it, haha. Also, love your space, would love to see an apt tour at some point if you'd like!!
Thank you for showing a real life, realistic decluttering job. With many videos, people show themselves running around like they're on speed. You don't really learn anything. You included the thinking process behind it which must be helpful to many people. You also showed sticktoitevness which is where I get into trouble.
I love seeing that you took your time doing this! When I started my journey into what I like to think of as philosophical minimalism (IE, only having things that serve multiple purposes and that bring me joy, vs just Not Having Things) I jumped into the decluttering process way too hard and wound up with a lot of really severe decision fatigue. Taking your time with any kind of decluttering can help you process the way that you want to live and help you know what you really value in your space. You did a great job! I hope your home makes you happier than ever!
You may be a random internet person but your vibe & energy is delightful! I shall watch your art stuff for inspiration. I'm getting back into needlework after a very very VERY long hiatus. ;) You said something, at 9:05, that was a major insight/aha moment for me. I'd been buying jewelry from thrift stores, but i woke up to the CHEAPNESS of it and realized I am wasting money, time & joy doing things that way. About 3 years ago I changed my tune, and while, YES I HAVE SPENT TOO MUCH MONEY ON GORGEOUS JEWELRY, I now WEAR said jewelry with pride, I support small business artisans, and I am feeling so much happier about living in a state of abundance. Oddly enough, making this choice, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW I HAVE SPENT WAY TOO MUCH MONEY ON THE JEWELRY (LIKE A LOT!), I have begun to take action on a bunch of long-overdue major tasks, and am now looking at quitting my crappy once-a-week job and I am ready to focus on my REAL inner life-as a poet & art collaborator. I feel like I am becoming a real girl. I am 67 years old and I am living with chronic pain, fatigue, and a few other obnoxious conditions. Had to get through some intense times to get here. Feeling FRESH through a major declutter process is very important. I'm getting into it, with a plan. Cannot wait to have my own creative work space. So I am very glad I decided to click on your video. I can use a few FUN clutter clearing buddies. TH-cam is GREAT for that! You are artistically adorable and I am going to reward myself after a big clutter push session, by watching you go through your own efforts. Your place looks excellent! Great job! ❤🎉❤
Honestly, this is so enjoyable to watch, and inspiring. It’s like I’m watching myself! Haha I am the exact same (trash hoarder) and it’s so hard to get rid of it when you don’t know how! I know you know. ❤
I'm loving that you understand you can have Maximalist design in your home, without the clutter. It's definitely two different things, though it's difficult to understand for some. I think your artist's soul has helped you with this. :)
I am the same as you when it comes to throwing things away, even if it is literal trash (you can only imagine the amount of plastic cutlery and chopsticks I have in my kitchen drawers). My #1 tip is to put this same energy when you purchase things, I.e., how often will I use this? do I have a place for it in my home? does it give me joy? And am I just consuming because I am feeling sad today? Decluttering by stopping the flow of overconsumption 🤝
I have a box and shipping envelope hoard under my bed. And then I realized I could tear down the boxes flat so now I can fit more! I keep them for when I sell things on poshmark or mercari
As a bit of a "collector of things" I really feel inspired by this video to do some decluttering of my own. And I have to say that you are likeable and entertaining to watch even when you do something like this that some people might think would be boring to watch. I'm not an artist myself but I subscribed because you have a kind of vibe and attitude that I need more of in my life 😊
I clicked the 'new to me' button and this video came up when i'm two weeks deep into decluttering my stuff, so I was already decluttering but it felt really reassuring to watch you declutter and hear you complain about the same things I complain about, like cleaning invisible spaces! I call it 'invisible cleaning', and it's so frustrating to spend hours doing invisible cleaning and see no progress! it's so funny how similar this looks to my decluttering process. i'm also a plant person and i felt guilty about some of the plants i was clinging to for some reason, but it feels so good to let them go, and somehow I also accumulated so many planters! it's more inspirational than i thought it would be to watch someone else declutter. it's nice to see that there's an END to this!
I love this video. The desk organization was very satisfying. You have a great apartment. Nice boxes are hard to part with. I'm impressed that you kept going through the whole apartment and it looks amazing!
It was totally worth videoing and putting up on YT. It was helpful to me to watch as I work on decluttering. I like the fact that it was very real life stuff. And in the end, you did really great! Thank you.
It was really refreshing to see someone so similar to me in habits be able to clean so thoroughly. I have also struggled with mild hoarding and guilt upon getting rid of things. I also feel it's particularly difficult for creatives to purge like this because art usually takes a lot of "stuff." I love how you stayed true to your maximalist vibe, while still making it not feel cluttered. I'm currently in the process of revamping my childhood bedroom and trying to teach myself that it's okay (and good!) to get rid of things. So sincerely, thank you for this video :)
Omg do I relate to feeling tied up about eliminating things from my home. My mind swirls about landfills, potential uses, fear of needing it for some reason, wanting to get money back out, whether it held meaning in past generations of family, whether it can be remade or repaired…
You did a great job! Decluttering is def an ongoing process. I’ve learned to trash/donate things immediately when they no longer serve me. Another thing is to give yourself boundaries for categories that you can’t surpass. There’s a lot of self talk to let go of stuff because of guilt or you may need it someday.
"Really prepared for stuff I'm not even doing" 😂😭 the relatability levels throught have just been crazy. Thank you for an awsomely honest declutter ❤ now subscribed 🥰
I have found some ways to be able to reduce clutter and also not have so much waste at the same time: old shirts = rags for wiping and cleaning, especially useful for anything that has to do with the car, great for 1 time use oil rags if you know drop by a small town car mechanic store sometimes they will take the box of clothes from you lol the rest can be donated / repurposed for pets / other items like toys or bags if you like sewing not sure what you could do with those bands, maybe they are stretchy enough to be able to wrap around cables or hold rolled up paper neatly? I used to use those colourful arm bands to wrap up tshirts for traveling bra pads are great for stuffing if u chop them up into tiny pieces. they are also great for keeping fragile things safe if you have a medium sized box of it like me :p wig caps / stockings are great as really fine filters, aquarium / water pumps / washing machine / plant pots etc. Usually not for human consumption tho! lots of people love to collect old jewelry especially if it's free so no worries about that old books, office supplies, art supplies are usually appreciated by any school bring old planters / plastic containers to plant stores, sometimes you can even leave them by the exit (if allowed) and people will just take them / soil as well, but usually just ask someone you know who has plants and they will usually take everything lmao clean cardboard is great for gardening / any cardboard making art or diys / some pets also like to scratch or nibble on them like rats, rabbits, cats etc. Cardboard boxes are only nice if they are the same size as containers, luckily they are recycled pretty much completely so it isn't the worst to throw them away selling / giving away a whole crochet kit on ebay is usually really easy in a city / same thing with any clean kitchen supplies food is a bit tricky, but best is to put food with early best by date at the front so you eat it first to make sure nothing goes bad also a friendly reminder for toiletries that some of them can expire! some oils and creams have an expiry date and can give you horrible rashes! So please check for your health and to reduce waste! :) Once again though, best way to reduce clutter is to simply not buy things we don't need. If you find something super cute on the internet and want to have it, bookmark it, then close the website. Chances are the next time you look at it you don't want it anymore.
This is exactly how i have been approaching decluttering this past year! After experiencing a little decline in my health, its been so helpful in creating a healing space for myself on the days im stuck inside ❤❤❤
I binged all of your videos yesterday and I'm so happy that there is another one for me to watch today, I really enjoy your positive and colourful personality
Watching this as inspiration before I declutter my own apartment. PRO TIP: I'm not sure where you're located, but near me, we have a place called SCRAP Creative Reuse, which would take things like those Barre bands and boxes and bra pads and anything that makes you think "someone could use this for something." SCRAP has several locations around the US, so they might have one near you!
Thank you for being authentic and real! Love the tip of making a pile to prevent the sentimental or feeling of waste. Sometimes trash can be treasure, sometimes trash is just trash.
Your apartment is super cute and colorful! I watched this to inspire myself since I'm about to start my own decluttering project and it worked! thank you!
Loved the realistic struggles of decluttering lol .. why is it so mentally taxing? Tip for those of us who say we're gonna sell stuff but don't or don't have the space to think about it: there are two options I've utilized in the past (specifically for clothes, bags, shoes - that kind of stuff) that I love!! ThreadUp is an online thrift store for women's apparel and the like. ForDays has an amazing program set up for sustainable closet cleanouts called the Take Back Bag. Both companies send you large bags with shipping labels to send your stuff to them. ThreadUp you can choose to sell your items similarly to online consignment & you'll get money to use toward your purchases or I think you can also cash out for a lower amount. ForDays responsibly donates, recycles, or throws out items sent to them - only 4% ends up in landfills (unlike GoodWill). For me these are awesome alternatives to remembering to actually take my things to donate/sell and I know the companies are helping towards a more sustainable fashion future.
LOVE the art supplies stand you created! This was seriously motivating. I’m on a declutter kick these days, but am procrastinating the biggest stuff (a storage closet😱).
I’m going to be 50 in a week and I have so much stuff!!! From grandparents, divorces, my children’s things, etc. You are so young and so smart to try and get used to doing this now. I’m one of those that doesn’t like to waste or throw out things. I’m horrible at it. And the longer I’ve kept an item, the more attached I get. I still have some of my childhood toys!!!!! So you’ve given me inspiration, just seeing a roomy closet was so satisfying! Keep it up! ❤
i randomly found your channel and i gotta say i love your vibe and energy!! your apartment is to die for & you did a great job decluttering! definitely motivated me to do it myself haha
I appreciate the realness in this video, thanks for showing this side of decluttering, and as I am reading through the comments, haha we all feel the same ♥
As a fellow box and shipping materials hoarder, I appreciated this video. I downsized my shipping/boxes into a storage bin and use the materials to ship the higher value items I sell online. Lower value items are donated or given to neighbors. Good job!
I have watched an insane amount of cleaning videos over the last 8 to 10 years and this is one of the better ones. Could not describe WHY/HOW it is better, but it just helped my clean-along mindset even more than most others. TY!
I like to watch these types of videos where a space is revamped/ decluttered. After seeing yours I feel proud of what you accomplished and look forward to seeing more of your videos! Also I'd love to hear how you like Jenette's Memoir!
I hardly leave comments but wanted to say I liked your video because you showed it doesn't have to happen in one session. Your time line showed life still happens but you keep persevering to it's done even if it's spread over a period of time. Realistic for a realistic life. Thanks
Yes on the guilt! I feel the same way. This was really supportive to watch as someone creative. I also don't use the term 'get rid' as much as possible and try to say 'pass on' so I understand that my well kept items will make someone very happy. Equally, the trash items that come in packaging are so sad to toss :(
I think you spoke very well on why it can be hard to throw stuff away - the mental load of figuring out how, the emotional load of wasting/saying goodbye… it’s always easier in the moment just to kick that can down the road, but that’s not always the best for us in the lomg run. Well done!
This was so satisfying to watch, thanks for taking us along on your declutter journey! You did such a great job! I too suffer guilt for getting rid of perfectly good things that I'll "maybe" use someday (and then never do) because it is "wasteful." I let this habit consume my tiny living spaces for years until I was approaching age 40 and my mid-life crisis culminated in the form of a HUGE DECLUTTER of everything I had accumulated during my entire life, pretty much all the way back to childhood. It took about a year but I did it and felt all the anxiety melt away. Now all of the things I own hold value or I use frequently, not because I feel an obligation to keep it. And after such an exhausting ordeal, I developed a daily/monthly habit of auditing my space for the donation/recycle pile. And I cull that dang box collection once a month, too, because that habit never goes away! Here's a couple ideas I learned to trick my brain: 1) Holding onto trash in my place isn't saving it from the landfill... it's only delaying its trip to the landfill. It's gonna go there when I die anyway, so I might as well not make it my freeloading roommate who doesn't even contribute to the rent bill but takes up all my space. 2) My apartment is not a storage facility. If things are living untouched in boxes so long that I forget I own them, then clearly it can leave my life without any impact. 3) If the items are something I haven't used in years, imagine how much joy that item could have been bringing to someone else all this time instead of sitting in my closet. This actually helps me to donate my art supplies fairly regularly when I know I've lost interest in them but they're still usable. I imagine some young artist finding nice art supplies for cheap/free that maybe they wouldn't have had access to otherwise.
Don't feel guilty about anything you are getting rid of! You are very young and I'm sure have learned some valuable lessons through this process that will help you be more discerning about your purchases/acquisitions in the future. And what I have learned is that if you want to live with less, you will do this process over and over again.
I am a bit of a hoarder myself, but I declutter regularly (books, shopping bags, gift boxes, puzzles...) What worked for me was to pack a box of stuff I didn't need anymore, write a nice message on it and put it in front of my house. (I live in a rather poor neighbourhood, e.g. there is a halfway house right next to me), and there is hardly ever anything left.
I like a lot the fact that you try your hardest to recycle and give things a new life as much as you can,the fact that you don't let anything go to waste unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary❤
"I am one person, why do I have so many shirts?" I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. All the other women who make declutter videos and tiktoks would NEVER and it drives me insane. You do not need that many clothes!!! you've worn most of them once and then never again!! stop it!!
When you said “I am one human” I resonated with that SO much cuz I keep saying “I am one person!” whenever I look at how much stuff I have for no reason. I’m gonna rewatch this video again when I get to declutter my own space later this week. Thanks for sharing 🙂
I like how this declutter is quite normal??? No excessive amounts of clothes/shoes/etc. Just a normal apartment, with good decluttering. I love it!
She’s only had 15 months. Try 30-40 years in same home!
@@seeleygirl6178 i dont think she was referring to the kind of quantity of clothes that can end up being collected over decades. I think she was speaking of when influencer who do tons of hauls and stuff do a declutter and the amount of clothes they have gained so quickly is crazy
h
YES!!! I love that this video wasn't sponsored by The Container Store or other organizing products company.
So true hah - I had a geranium that I was not into and she was so high maintenance! Felt a lot lighter after parting ways
Yeah but how do you get rid of them, where?
Ok, but why do u have to trow them into the trash?
I keep my dead plants thinking they’ll come back …
@@WinterEdition I get rid of mine by selling or giving away on local plant facebook groups
Sometimes you can bring "proper" stuff to a nearby school, for craftingprojects.
@@Widdekuu91 Kindergarten too
The fact you did this bit by bit over a longer period of time is actually SO motivating. Smashing it out in a weekend/week is just not doable for so many of us, but this is actually achievable. Thank you!
Girl you KILLED IT. Too many times you see people advertise a giant declutter then they get rid of barely anything. No false advertisement here! Great job ❤
Finally someone who collects packing material without a reason!! Who knows when I'll need bubble wrap or a specificlly sized box?
oooh me too me too!!
I’m like that with gift wrap 😂 I usually do end up using a lot of it, but I do keep pretty much all of the nice tissue paper and gift bags I get because why throw them out?? 😆
Same 😅 cause I also sold stuff on ebay for a while and i never had to buy packaging, but now?! 😅
I appreciate the moments you can have remembering who you used to be. And then you can move on by getting rid of the stuff you don't need anymore!
it is so unfortunate that i watched this at midnight because now i want to clean my whole apartment
Lol yep me too 😂❤
Same xD I just thought like this is such wasted motivation. But I knew what I was getting myself into lol
Lol me too 😂
😂😂😂
How did it go?
I haven't met a single other person in my friend group that "hoardes" items for sustainability reasons other than me!! that was super validating that you shared that with us. I thank you cause seeing you let go has given me inspiration to do the same. For example, I keep every single gift bag and wrapping paper I ever receive.... like for what!?
i do the same thing for sustainability reasons too!! i have old bubble mailers and envelopes from cards people have written and paper gift bags??? why???? because i might need it one day 💀💀💀enough is enough
Me, I do! I even have styrofoam because I don't know how to recycle it....quite often I give non recyclable things to my son to make things out of....so it gets one more use before it goes to the local incinerator or landfill 😬 we minimise waste and compost and recycle everything that we can, and walk/bike/bus/train everywhere...I struggle to throw out sticks with holes in too 😆
same here!!!
i just love how realistic this video is. decluttering is exhausting, tiring, messy and.... sometimes you dont feel satisfied after doing it. and of course, its not a process thats made in three days.... btw, rest in peace roald
Hahahah😂 I also laughed when she said Raold😂 like, idk why, but it's just the perfect name for a long lost toy.😂
@ kayleem1037 that’s actually his name tho lol, Roald is a penguin character from the Animal Crossing series 😆
@@elianewinter2638 ohhh ok! That makes sense! Haha 😄
thank you for the courage to share how most homes look like, not straight to the result of a clean and curated place, it helps people like me who are starting to declutter and gives us a good spirit to carry on
5:37 THIS PART IS TOO REAL 😭
I love this video because your apartment doesn't look like an IKEA showroom.
She can't she cleans once in a year!!!
That is not really ecofriendly though, repurchasing it.
I really appreciated that you didn’t buy anything to declutter!! Makes it feel real and is great to see
I encourage you to engage with a local buy nothing group. A lot of donations end up in landfills. It can be time-consuming but a buy nothing group has a higher success rate of rehoming items in my experience. It also helps you feel like you're not throwing things away.
How do
I set this up??
Same here, I have soo many boxes lol
Tons of good info, just not from product manufacturers :(
If you're feeling a lot of guilt about your waste stream, try to shop your home first, then hit the thrift stores before buying new (both options are 100% guilt free)
honestly this was so motivating to watch because it's so real. i relate to a lot of the things you hang onto for longer than necessary like boxes, empty plant pots, etc and feel a lot of guilt and sadness abt the idea of getting rid of things but this video makes me feel a lot less intimidated by those feelings. thank you for showing me that this is achievable for me too
I TOTALLY relate to keeping things around because you hate throwing stuff away!!
Do be careful, I know a similar factory and they are selling them to fetishists. I confronted them on Facebook and they blocked me without answering.
Thank you for being real and sharing your decluttering process!
omg I felt the same way about that mushroom rootbeer drink! It really grew on me by the end of it.
I love this. I related to you so much, I often struggle with feelings of guilt when throwing things away or giving them away. It's refreshing to see someone also has the same problem, and seeing them manage it. Thank you! 🩷
Aw I’m glad!! Thank u!!
i am currently binge watching minimalism, declutterring and cleaning videos to motivate me to sort out my hell hole of a bedroom, which has been a year in the making 😅 thanks so much for sharing your journey to a better apartment!!!!!
instead of feeling bad about getting rid of things, we can focus on not letting things we don't want/love/need into our lives! great video
Wow! That was a real intensive effort! It took me many more days than 7 days to declutter my place, so I’m in awe! 😍 I loved all your comments along the way 😅👍
Thank you for bringing real life into my TH-cam feed again, you're amazing.
Omg thank u! I’m glad u liked the vid :)))
This was SO motivating. I usually watch a lot more advice type videos on minimalist “experts” lol, but this was way more motivating for me. I got a ton decluttered while watching/listening to this! Love your energy and vibe!
(I know this was over a year ago but still wanted to leave a positive comment because today it was so helpful for me!)
children’s shelters and adult shelters are great donation options instead of thrift stores . especially with hoodies and socks and small bags .
I love how artistic she looks and her living space represents her soo well.
Thank you for being so real and honest it's so refreshing to see someone who acknowledges their own imperfections. This is so relatable.
4:02 that’s what I say to help get rid of things. It will be used by someone else or someone else will find joy in it
I love that ending sign off. You can do anything that you put your mind to. ❤❤❤❤
I'm getting back into needlework after a very very VERY long hiatus. ;)
You said something, at 9:05, that was a major insight/aha moment for me.
Decluttering by stopping the flow of overconsumption 🤝
lol - I too am a hoarder of 'good' boxes I may need later for a crafting project or to use for 'just the right gift for someone in the future'
This has been the most relatable video on decluttering and the feelings of guilt that come with it all - thank you!
The colours through the apartment are so cool! I just moved, so it was nice to see some (kinda) relatable chaos. Very satisfying and uplifting!
I have found some ways to be able to reduce clutter and also not have so much waste at the same time:
old shirts = rags for wiping and cleaning, especially useful for anything that has to do with the car, great for 1 time use oil rags
if you know drop by a small town car mechanic store sometimes they will take the box of clothes from you lol
the rest can be donated / repurposed for pets / other items like toys or bags if you like sewing
not sure what you could do with those bands, maybe they are stretchy enough to be able to wrap around cables or hold rolled up paper neatly? I used to use those colourful arm bands to wrap up tshirts for traveling
bra pads are great for stuffing if u chop them up into tiny pieces. they are also great for keeping fragile things safe if you have a medium sized box of it like me :p
wig caps / stockings are great as really fine filters, aquarium / water pumps / washing machine / plant pots etc.
Usually not for human consumption tho!
lots of people love to collect old jewelry especially if it's free so no worries about that
old books, office supplies, art supplies are usually appreciated by any school
bring old planters / plastic containers to plant stores, sometimes you can even leave them by the exit (if allowed) and people will just take them / soil as well, but usually just ask someone you know who has plants and they will usually take everything lmao
clean cardboard is great for gardening / any cardboard making art or diys / some pets also like to scratch or nibble on them like rats, rabbits, cats etc. Cardboard boxes are only nice if they are the same size as containers, luckily they are recycled pretty much completely so it isn't the worst to throw them away
selling / giving away a whole crochet kit on ebay is usually really easy in a city / same thing with any clean kitchen supplies
food is a bit tricky, but best is to put food with early best by date at the front so you eat it first to make sure nothing goes bad
also a friendly reminder for toiletries that some of them can expire! some oils and creams have an expiry date and can give you horrible rashes! So please check for your health and to reduce waste! :)
Once again though, best way to reduce clutter is to simply not buy things we don't need.
You did such a good job! I love how bright and colourful your apartment is
Thank you for being authentic and real!
That’s me tonight. I hope you did it.
Good job!
I thought I was the only one that felt bad for throwing my things away thank you for posting this, this motivates Me to declutter my house!❤
Thanks
Thanks for showing a realistic decluttering, sometimes it's frustating trying to decluter all in a day
Yes on the guilt! I feel the same way. This was really supportive to watch as someone creative. I also don't use the term 'get rid' as much as possible and try to say 'pass on' so I understand that my well kept items will make someone very happy. Equally, the trash items that come in packaging are so sad to toss :(
This is exactly what I’m doing this weekend! Very motivating and relatable 😂🖤
Here's a couple ideas I learned to trick my brain:
1) Holding onto trash in my place isn't saving it from the landfill... it's only delaying its trip to the landfill.
I am a bit of a hoarder myself, but I declutter regularly (books, shopping bags, gift boxes, puzzles...)
What worked for me was to pack a box of stuff I didn't need anymore, write a nice message on it and put it in front of my house.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets sad about parting with socks with holes 😂
Me too, but only if they are nice socks or fit well 😂 I'm not sure why, but I'm glad its not just me! lol
Thank you for making a video that I come back to regularly for a sense of comfort ♥️ your style of decluttering is very soothing
