15:13 How can you close an emulated game? Especially when you are launching Emu Station via the SteamOS Steam Library. Which buttons do I have to press to exit? I am currently stuck in a DS Game and dont know how to quit. For future: Is there a way to look up how all the controls work? (Close Game, Save State, etc.) And thanks for your awesome guide!😊
Depends on the game. Some games you may have to do some controller monkeying. For retroarch (most of the early systems) it's hold down view and tap menu.
thank you so much for some great content. does the games have to go on the internal in order to play them? Id love for them to stay on a HDD thats plugged into the Deck. is this possible? plug and play basically. thank you.
You COULD ... But I don't typically recommend it. The mounting of internal storage and the internal microSD card are handled quite well by the OS. External drives do seem to occasionally have mounting issues. I would certainly use the virtual symlink for the install as shown. Then you can change easily - even if your external drive takes on a new mount point!
@@Darkuni thank you so much for the speedy reply! So it’s best to just stick in a SD card? Would you recommend putting in a new one just for emulation? Thanks so much again
@@TomLally I'm not the biggest fan of the microSD slot on the Deck. I am not sure it would handle a ton of ins and outs. I would put a nice big SD card (if you can swing a SanDisk Extreme - that's recommended).

I really don't understand the concept of Symlink, but is this something I'm going to want to do if I keep everything on internal storage with no plan on upgrading or using an SD card? Thanks in advance :)
That's a bold statement to make :) We all start off making similar promises - then? Well, you know. If you're going to never ever EVER change where EmuDeck is going to be installed, and NEVER want to use multiple storage devices for EmuDeck support files? Choose internal. But this is a good exercise if nothing else - and future proofs you with really no downside - other than a few minutes of your time.
Sounds good. I have various devices for various things, and I'm getting a Steam Deck from my sister and I'm solely using it for portable emulation and am 100% positive the internal space is sufficient. I just dont fully understand what a Symlink does so i am not sure if there's a point to making one if I set up with internal storage. I'm not new to emulation but I'm a complete noob with both Steamdeck and Linux lol so excuse my noob questions 😅
@@Velocifaptor92 A symlink is a "fake folder" that links somewhere else. So you can create a symlink folder (let's call it EmuVirtual) that points to some folder on your current SD card (let's say it is named "Retro Roms". Now let's say you want to have another SD card for new consoles like PS3. That card will have a different name (Windows uses drive letters, Linux uses mount paths). So you put the new card in, with the right folders and everything but Emudeck is completely broken. This is because all the paths you set up (without a symlink) no longer are there ... what used to be run/media/desk/retroroms ... is now run/media/deck/ps3games ... nothing works. With the symlink? You just point the symlink to the new card and BOOM ... everything continues to work as it should. EmuDeck expects you to forever and ever use the exact same path - but that doesn't always work out.
So last question, and I hope to stop pestering you! What am I doing when I want to use a second SD card? Am I having to change anything about the symlink if the new SD card has a different mount path. Im completely new to the steam os, so im sure once i fiddle with itll start to click. I'm sure this is way more simple than I'm making it. Im setting it all up tomorrow, so I'm excited, yet a little cautious. Want it to be right the first time 😅
Great tutorial, but unfortunately ES isn't detecting any games despite the directories being setup, roms in place. I see it's a fairly common issue with it just not working for some people. Various random fixes work for some people, and for others nothing ever works.
did you ever come across an issue when adding y*** back that emudeck didn't detect the switch firmware, despite it being there, and due to this not being able to reset y*** configuration? I need it to restore my backed up saves and restore all the symlinks
@@Darkuni yep, that bios checker, it's definitely in the right place. although i did do the emudeck backup from my previous install (had to factory reset deck). but even when my backup ones didn't work, I even went and got the latest keys and firmware and still somehow it's not recognised
I've been using dolphin for game cube emulation and some of the control schemes are awful. Because I've used the Emulation station front end, does that mean i cant set up deck profiles for individual emulated titles? On the steam input ES seems to have various action sets for different emulators yet i cant see one for Dolphin which is odd. Do you have any suggestions as to how to get steam control profiles for individual titles and whether steam input will work with emulated titles the same as regular steam games?
I don't use Dolphin much, but Emulation Station has its own per-emulator based input settings. If you want to depart from them, you're going to need to create your own input switching (someday I might do a video on that) or you're going to need to inject the game into Steam and use Steam Input from there. Hope that makes sense.
@17:20 how do we get the cover art for ES-DE? Not the games, but EmulationSataion itself? Mine used to be there, I did a fresh install, and now its black, just like yours.
I recently updated Emudeck. For the emulator that starts with Y, whenever I try to run one of the games through emudeck, it doesn't run and gives an error saying, 'Error: couldn't find emulator 'Ryujinx'... But I don't have that Ryujinx installed and don't want to use it. Do you know how I could fix this? I have checked to see if I have all the files in the correct location for Y, as shown in your video.
@@Rubayeth123 Crap, I may have clipped that out by accident. You need to change the default emulator. MAIN MENU->OTHER SETTINGS->ALTERNATIVE EMULATORS ... I'm guessing you can figure it out from there.

No, the BIOS files all go in the ROOT of Emulation/bios ... there are a few RARE exceptions, but as a rule? Put all bios files in the ROOT, not in a system named folder. This is something new to me. I haven't seen this. My guess is that one of your games has an odd filename and it is blowing up ES DE. Check ES DE's log file for any clues as to what is crashing it.

People ask why I don't like or use SRM (outside of getting Emulation Station installed) - this is why. The app isn't great. It breaks a lot and the experience seems to change from version to version. ALL my emulation is controlled via ES-DE - and I wouldn't have it any other way.
@@DaGai So, you would prep the new card - copy your Emulation folder to the new card. Put the new card in. Delete the EmuVirtual folder, recreate it using the new card's path. That's it.
The file literally just says emudeck desktop and won't open or anything. It's a text file for some reason? I don't understand. I can't even ask someone else to do this it's so convoluted
Did you put it on the desktop? It won't run anywhere else. There is also the possibility you said "OPEN" instead of "EXECUTE" and that will open it in a text editor. You'll have to reset that behavior if you did.
Thank you for the tutorial! I can see the game in ES-DE but when I launch it, it'll just go back to the ES-DE main page again... What could it be? There aren't any ROM alternatives and I also have the according BIOS
I have a couple of questions. I am seeing multple artwork for the same game for Sega Saturn. I put my Sega Saturn game folder with the bin and cue files in it, into the roms folder. I opened up SRM, and saw the multiple artwork. I added only one to Steam. Is it ok to delete the multiple artworks? Also, how can I remove the games from Steam after injecting them?
The better thing to do is run the ISO Compression tool and it will take all those multi-file games and up them in a SINGLE file - which will actually solve everything. :)

@@Vegan_Lifting here's my guess and I have no data to back this up. The way that scraper works effectively is if there's a hash check of your file that matches the scrapers database. These hashes require a lot of CPU to generate but on small files? It doesn't take very long at all. But with an ISO? A big giant disk image? It's not going to be able to hash check those effectively. So it has to go 100% based on the name. If the name has anything funky in it it will kick it back as unfound or you do a manual search and it will show you three possibilities and 99% of the time one of those possibilities is the one that you want. Emulation - per se - is not difficult. EmuDeck is so turn key, it is almost criminal. Chasing BIOS files and ROMS (both of which are illegal of course) is where people hit the wall quickly. Being illegal, nobody on YT or other platforms wants to talk about them for risk of punishment. There are Reddit groups that stick it to the system and talk about these illegalities - but they are transient as they end up getting spanked too, eventually. Emulation isn't for the faint of heart on Windows. On Linux? You MUST get your hands dirty. There just isn't any other way. :(

thank you so much for some great content. does the games have to go on the internal in order to play them?
@@Darkuni Awhh so do this via a USB C to SD card reader? Or even my Ugreen hub thing? Sorry for all these questions. I want to get this right to the T.
@@TomLally Probably easier to answer your questions in our Discord ...
@@Darkuni That clears up so much. Thank you!!

Great video!
Use Steam Rom Manager or Decky Loader's SteamGridDB plugin. You could set it yourself, if you like. I have videos on all of these.
If you're using steam rom manager? I can't really help you. Emulation station? I can help you out there.

Confused on setting mine up. My bios folder doesnt have folders for certain emulators. Do i just create folders for those?
No, the BIOS files all go in the ROOT of Emulation/bios ... there are a few RARE exceptions, but as a rule? Put all bios files in the ROOT, not in a system named folder. Most "bios packs" you obtain online aren't very clean. I wouldn't recommend using them - just take what you NEED from them. Unfortunately, mine is messy because I pulled the bios files from my Anbernic handheld boot card - not the way I should have done it.

@@Darkuni Strange because the problem is only with Xbox. On Windows I use Retrobat. It's Emulation Station too and the Xbox scraping is not perfect but it works good and better than with Emu Deck. I think there are more scraper.
Alas, BIOS are copyrighted content - you're going to have to find that on your own. :)
Videos like this make me completely lose any hope that I’ll ever be able to get emulators working on my steam deck… Beginners?
Emulation - per se - is not difficult. EmuDeck is so turn key, it is almost criminal. Chasing BIOS files and ROMS (both of which are illegal of course) is where people hit the wall quickly. Being illegal, nobody on YT or other platforms wants to talk about them for risk of punishment. There are Reddit groups that stick it to the system and talk about these illegalities - but they are transient as they end up getting spanked too, eventually. Emulation isn't for the faint of heart on Windows. On Linux? You MUST get your hands dirty. There just isn't any other way. :(
@@Darkuni finding the bios and roms wasn’t difficult at all, it’s where to put them and how to have the right format.
