Your memories are slightly faded ... you forgot the part where you had to get some keyboard->controller driver because the emulator didn't support controllers; only keyboards. If it did? It didn't support YOUR controller - so you either needed a tool that remapped XINPUT to DINPUT (or vice versa). Oh, and if it was supported out of the box? The controls weren't mapped - you had to do that yourself (or at least change the dumb ass one that the developer premade for whatever reason). Heaven forbid you had some sort of custom controller like a fighting pad or arcade controller - that's really just keyboard mapping only. You may not remember - but Pepperidge Farms (and I) remember. You also didn't get a nice easy to access display of your games. Hey, not everyone likes to scroll through a directory listing of 4000 roms ... No favorites .. no sorting ... No per game customizations. No save states. MAYBE FFW but no rewind... Certainly no choice of compatibly cores ... Of course, back then ... ? Roms weren't encrypted ... half the code needed to run games at all wasn't locked inside an encryption chip covered in anti-tamper glue. You didn't need a half a GB of "firmware" to make anything run either. Game roms were 8kb and not 8GB. A simpler time - for sure. But we don't live in simpler times anymore. That's why these things exist.
