Im so happy that i went with a steam deck some months ago. Def the right handheld for me personally and emulation was really easy to set up with emudeck :)
Have a steam deck oled. Running into an issue, I've tried plugging several usbc drives directly to the steam deck, but none of them show up, no matter the format, fat32, exfat, mac os, ntfs. UPDATE: I found the fix on reddit for the oled deck, it appears to be software related issue, b/c the solution I found is booting into bios and accessing setup utility > advanced - changing 'USB Dual Role Device' value from 'DRD' to 'XHCI'. Once I saved this change, booted back into steam deck then back into desktop mode. I plugged in the original usbc drive I attempted, and it now shows.
Congratulations. Before it arrives, as I mention in the video - take some time to get all your bios and roms organised! It will make the whole process easier!
Yes, any changes you make in steam Rom manager will update in steam. Alternatively, if you use the steamgriddb plugin you can change the artwork directly from gaming mode
It is really easy! A lot of people see emulation videos like mine and and think “cool. I’d like to do that”. Then you tell them that you need to obtain the roms and bios files yourself, and then they get all confused…In short, you need to have the bios and roms (games) already. If you don’t then go research how to obtain those first. Once you have these files, the rest is EASY! You are literally just putting the files into specific locations.
Yeah but dood once you learn it and you get it that's it!. You'll know what you're doing and you'll fly through the process, and have the WORLD of emulation in your hands.
Now a beginners guide to setting up wii controls for games like mario galaxy, mariokart wii, mario and sonic at the olympic games, mario sluggers, and sonic and the black knight
If I launched every rom that I have installed on my MicroSD card, I would have over 10,000 games on Steam. It would take me an afternoon just to find one game. I bought a 1.5TB Sandisk MicroSD card just for storing rom's on. Then, I found out that my entire collection of retro games came to less than 10GB of storage. I think that I might have gone OTT with storage on the deck. I have a 2TB NVME, 1.5TB MicroSD, and a 1TB in a hub, magnetised to the back of my deck.
I got my deck during the first sale they did. Had a separate SD card for emudeck and got stuff working great but when I decided to delete stuff it left a load of files or links to stuff that weren't there anymore. It got so annoying I ended up resetting the whole system and starting again. I have relatively recently started a batocera build but it doesn't support switch without hassle. I will be going back to Emudeck for a specific few systems as I've just picked up a small 1tb ssd (£30 cheaper than an sd card!!!) and I'll be doing a batocera build on that and use the spare 512gb sd card for an emudeck build for nintendo systems.
Thanks for, very clear an easy to follow. 1 q - if I have an SD card I already use on another machine, can I just take it out and use in the steam deck or will I have to start over? Thanks
Again! So much appreciation for this tutorial. I'm gaming away on every system! One last question..... To add more roms do I just follow the same steps? Do I have to delete the previously loaded roms from the USB drive?
No, you don’t need to delete the roms. It will just copy over any new ones you added. Alternatively, you can manually copy the games to the relevant folder on your steam deck rather than using the transfer wizard
@steamdeckguy thank you so much! I will just follow the tutorial again and repeat the same.e success without having to even think. I'm old. First generation gamer.
Great video, thank you for this! Question, since EmuDeck installed all of the folders and organized them by emulators. Can I just remove the SD card and do all of the file transfers there and then reinsert into the steam deck and parse them?
The card will be in Linux format (ext4) which won’t be readable by Mac or windows. There may be some third party programs that may be able to read it, but never tried.
@@steamdeckguy thank you! Do you know if you’d still be able to use WiFi functionality,’such as Pokémon games trading with everyone or Mario kart online?

Hi mate. Great video. I do have a question though. How can I access the actual emulator itself? Example duckstation. I have them all on my pc, and I like to go into the actual settings and mess with them. Do I just select the actual duckstation emulator in steam os?

How are you launching the games? through steam? Emulation Station? and which systems are having issues? all of them? Usually you can solve this by making sure the controller is connected before starting the game.

Hi after I use parsers on emudeck, none of the artwork transfers to steam. Have tried fully loading 5 times and reinstalling emudeck with no success. If anyone has any ideas why, that would be great. Thanks.
i've spent >3hrs trying to get firefox and emudeck installed on my new steam deck oled. If the device literally can't install its own default browser without hours of troubleshooting, seems like it's going back for a refund...
I dunno. I was hype about the deck at first but 90% of my existing library on steam is not compatible, and 90% of the games marked as verified are “playable” at best. Its so frustrating even getting steam games to work, i cant imagine this will go smoothly at all
Half of the games that are "verified" or untested will run fine with minimal optimization, use protondb badges for a more accurate idea of how a game will run and how to optimize them
Great video! But please I need help. Once I open an emulator and start playing a game I don’t know the controllers! lol. Don’t know how to save and quit as well. Please help
At 15:50 in the video you are able to check the hotkeys for each emulator. For majority, pressing start and select quits the game back to steam or emulation station. If you have auto save enabled it will save the game automatically when you quit the game
My SD card is grayed out despite the fact that it works normally in game mode and my games are installed and working and having over 400gb of free space
If you formatted your SD card or drive to EXT4 in game mode, How did you mount that drive to your PC and interact with the files. that doesn’t seem to be natively supported By windows or Mac as EXT4 is a Linux format
That is normal. The sd card will be formatted in ex4 format which cannot be read by windows or Mac. You’ll need to put the games on another thumb drive or equivalent and then plug that into the steam deck, where you can then copy them to the microSD card.
Can I use my Thumb drive with folders on a friends steamdeck as well? Meaning....after finishing up with mine, do I need to start over again with an empty thumb drive and reformat with folders?
You can reuse the thumb drive. You’ll probably need to click the ‘create folders’ button on your friends steam deck, but since they already exist it won’t actually do anything. Then you can click copy to copy them over automatically
Yeah, if it just mentions the bios file, but no specific path, put it in the main BIOS folder. E.g game boy gba, ps1, ps2, and Saturn all go in the main bios folder
I mentioned this in the video. You should select only one parser for each system. There are duplicates because each one is configured to launch the game with a different emulator/core
@@carlosmelendez8317 No. all the parser is doing is adding a link to the game in steam and adding launch parameters so that it loads in a specific emulator/core. You should find that each one is in its own collection. For example if you enable ‘switch - yuzu’ and ‘switch ryujinx’ then you will have two collections, each containing the same games. If you launch the link from the ‘switch - yuzu’ collection then the game will load in yuzu. Likewise, launching the game from the ‘ryujinx’ collection will load the game in ryujinx instead of yuzu. Personally, I only have one collection for each system to avoid duplicates
are the prod keys game specific (i have the game cartridge for the games i want to play AND the game files) or could i search up a yuzu prod key and use that to get it to work?
Waiting on my Steam Deck OLED and this is very helpfull thx ! Quick question, do you have to copy bios&rom via a USB-C device ? I don't feel like getting a USB-C Adapter for this single purpose :'). Would it work with an external DD that has other stuff on it ?

After I create EmuDeck folders on my thumb drive, there are no bios folders for Ryujinx or Yuzu. The bios folder is empty. Why is it not creating the bios folders for the Switch emulators?
My Saturn games don’t work. Have the Bios. When I launch, the Saturn boot screen comes up, but it then kicks me to the Saturn dashboard screen as if no disk is inserted. How to fix this?
followed this guide to a T but the only emulators that installed were ESDE, Vita3K, and PCSX. Everything else failed and won’t install. Any ideas? On a brand new OLED deck
Does it give an error? What does it say in the post-installation summary? If you still face issues, I'd suggest a full Emudeck reset and keep everything as default.
What would you suggest if I’m getting error messages in the log menu in steam rom manager after his save to steam? Because I’m not able to get any images for my games.

Do you need a thumb drive to do this? ( im very new to all of this:) )
You need a way to get your games and bios files from your computer to steam deck (you can use thumb drive, hard drive, whatever) Alternatively, you can download all the files directly from the steam deck itself e.g. if you have all your files stored on a google drive.
got it installed and switched controllers but now the one i have keeps coming up as Player 2 - any suggestions?
How are you launching the games? through steam? Emulation Station? and which systems are having issues? all of them? Usually you can solve this by making sure the controller is connected before starting the game.
@@steamdeckguy I am only using Emulation Station but have Mame and RetroArch installed and everything was working so perfectly until I connected my keyboard and now my controller is player 2 on every system 🤦🏿♂️
@@andril I suspect the issue is your keyboard is detected as a controller. If you bring up the main menu take a look under input device settings. There are a few option there that you could try such as ‘ignore keyboard input’ . Also make sure you have connected your controller before launching emulation station
@@steamdeckguy will try this when I get off work and appreciate you and your help
@@andril no worries, and hope you get it sorted!
Is it possible to download the games directly from the desktop mode on the steam deck and then place the game into emudeck? Or do you have to use an external pc? I’m still very confused, I’m a noob. My OLED deck will be here next Tuesday and I want the setup to be seamless.
You can do it all from the steam deck
thank you
You’re welcome!
Thank you for this tutorial video, really helped me out and im fairly new on my steam deck and emultion. I have a good collection of retro games all working fine but I have problem with my yuzu emulator tho hoping you can maybe help me out. I have the latest keys in the bios folder on switch. When I go to boot up super mario bros deluxe u it loads up to the start menu and then after ive pressed start, the screen goes black an stays like that? Haven't tried any other games yet but i do own mario kart deluxe so hoping that will work
Apparently for that game you need to do a firmware dump. yuzu-emu.org/game/new-super-mario-bros-u-deluxe/
Ah ok thank you I will do some research how this is done 👍🏼
where do you download these games ??
The internet 🤷♂️
Hi after I use parsers on emudeck, none of the artwork transfers to steam. Have tried fully loading 5 times and reinstalling emudeck with no success. If anyone has any ideas why, that would be great. Thanks.
Is it better to use emudeck than installing all emulators individually?
You can install them manually, but why do that when emudeck can install them all for you? Including applying the best settings for the steam deck
Are there instructions for the OLED or is it roughly the same?
It’s the same
Don’t worry Steam Deck Guy, I promise to obtain all my bioses and roms 110% legally! 😃
Pinky promise?
@@steamdeckguy cross my heart!
Can I do this over windows on my steam deck I just downloaded it last night
Yeah sure, it is a PC afterall
i've spent >3hrs trying to get firefox and emudeck installed on my new steam deck oled. If the device literally can't install its own default browser without hours of troubleshooting, seems like it's going back for a refund...
the one million dollar question........ can download roms from the steam deck?
(without a pc an, usb?)
Hypothetically, yes. The steam deck is just a computer after all….
ok thx@@steamdeckguy
I dunno. I was hype about the deck at first but 90% of my existing library on steam is not compatible, and 90% of the games marked as verified are “playable” at best. Its so frustrating even getting steam games to work, i cant imagine this will go smoothly at all
If you already have the roms and bios files getting up and running with EmuDeck is easy.
Half of the games that are "verified" or untested will run fine with minimal optimization, use protondb badges for a more accurate idea of how a game will run and how to optimize them
How much storage you need for all the emulators and a few games?
I’d recommend a 512gb card as they are fairly cheap nowadays
Great video! But please I need help. Once I open an emulator and start playing a game I don’t know the controllers! lol. Don’t know how to save and quit as well. Please help
At 15:50 in the video you are able to check the hotkeys for each emulator. For majority, pressing start and select quits the game back to steam or emulation station. If you have auto save enabled it will save the game automatically when you quit the game
The skip for now option isn’t there for me?
"legally obtain your bios"
yeah, sure, I will totally do that.
Simple answer. I didn’t….. the drive where the games and roms are being copied from is not EXT4
Getting a deck soon is it possible to not have to transfer files from my pc to the deck ? Can i just download it directly from the deck desktop
Yes
@@steamdeckguy great video by the way I rewatched it and noticed you clearly answered my question lol 😆
Followed these steps but now when I try to copy games over from my PC to my SD Card it doesn't get detected by my PC. So what's the fix for that?
That is normal. The sd card will be formatted in ex4 format which cannot be read by windows or Mac. You’ll need to put the games on another thumb drive or equivalent and then plug that into the steam deck, where you can then copy them to the microSD card.
can you use just a usb c flash drive to add the roms and bios to steam deck?
Yes
Can I use my Thumb drive with folders on a friends steamdeck as well?
Meaning....after finishing up with mine, do I need to start over again with an empty thumb drive and reformat with folders?
You can reuse the thumb drive. You’ll
probably need to click the ‘create folders’ button on your friends steam deck, but since they already exist it won’t actually do anything. Then you can click copy to copy them over automatically
@steamdeckguy awesome thank you.
That happened to me on my SD. It wouldn't offer me "copy files"
I did what you said and all was fine
Are you the guy who does switchcorner if not you just sound similar
Nope
Which should be a correct size for the micro SD to have all the emulators ?
Emulators are installed on the internal SSD. It is only the Bios and Roms that will be stored on the micro SD
If it doesn't say "PLACE" on the Cheat Sheet, I'm guessing I just put it in the main BIOS file?
Yeah, if it just mentions the bios file, but no specific path, put it in the main BIOS folder. E.g game boy gba, ps1, ps2, and Saturn all go in the main bios folder
I did everything except I don’t have usb to put games on .
Why do I have 2 Parsed files of the same game when adding to Ryujinx and sometimes other emulators? It's like there are 2 copies in the Library.
I mentioned this in the video. You should select only one parser for each system. There are duplicates because each one is configured to launch the game with a different emulator/core
@steamdeckguy cool I will watch again. If I have 2 parsers configured will it have trouble loading the game?
Hypothetically if you “found” the prod key file on the internet it would work.
@@steamdeckguy k, i’ll have a look into it, thx!
the game DOES have a steam port, so i could prob just use that instead, but still, thx!
My steam rom manager looks different than yours where you toggle the parsers and stuff. I’m confused at this section
Go to the settings and choose the steam deck theme
Waiting on my Steam Deck OLED and this is very helpfull thx !
Quick question, do you have to copy bios&rom via a USB-C device ? I don't feel like getting a USB-C Adapter for this single purpose :'). Would it work with an external DD that has other stuff on it ?
Glad it helped! The Steam deck is a computer so there are many ways to do this. e.g. Move them to a dropbox/google drive, connect USB Drive or hard drive directly to the steam deck, FTP transfer....
@@steamdeckguy Thx for clarifying man !
My SD card fried along with emudeck in it. How do I reinstall emudeck on my SD card so I can play it on my steam deck again?
hey, i know its an old video, but how would i install DLC to my emulated games? like the fighters pass to smash bros ultimate for example.
Hi - I’d recommend reading through the Yuzu FAQ. It has everything you need to know
This is a long shot.. 🙏🏻
I'm using "parallel launcher" (n64 emulator.) My buttons are all messed up I think.. When I try to keybind, the buttons, it says "not bound" when I press a button. The right stick also controls the mouse as well as the right trackpad. Is there a "community layout" that can help? I just need help to make the buttons recognizable for keybindings. I think I need to re-bind for all emulators...
Set the controller profile to gamepad, and then redo the keybindings in the emulator settings
@@steamdeckguy Where's the option? I can't find it
@@CapnRetro you asked for community layouts earlier. Instead of selecting a community layout just select one of the default gamepad options
@@steamdeckguy The default gamepad options are under "Recommended"? I only see one. I tried it, but I still can't button map. Should I just reboot the whole thing?
@@CapnRetro I ‘d try switching over to desktop mode, launch the emulator, and then try the button mapping from there.
I have been tempted to use emu deck compression tool, but worried it will ruin my game library and makes games unplayable like Dreamcast games. Has anyone had a good experience with it?
Can’t all of this be done through the desktop mode on the deck?
Yes
@ thanks for quick reply! Great video 👍
After I create EmuDeck folders on my thumb drive, there are no bios folders for Ryujinx or Yuzu. The bios folder is empty. Why is it not creating the bios folders for the Switch emulators?
You have to create the sub folders yourself, per the cheat sheet instructions
My Saturn games don’t work. Have the Bios. When I launch, the Saturn boot screen comes up, but it then kicks me to the Saturn dashboard screen as if no disk is inserted.
How to fix this?
Sounds like bad roms tbh
You make it sound so easy…
Or I’m just getting old.
What about the gba emulator? You didn’t mention that one?
Yeah I missed it, but not a lot to say on that one really. Retroarch has GBA cores, so the standalone mGBA isn’t required
followed this guide to a T but the only emulators that installed were ESDE, Vita3K, and PCSX. Everything else failed and won’t install. Any ideas? On a brand new OLED deck
Does it give an error? What does it say in the post-installation summary? If you still face issues, I'd suggest a full Emudeck reset and keep everything as default.
Could I pay you to install this on my Steam Deck? And if I had a small list of maybe 20 games? Let me know we can set it up thank you! 🙏🏾💯
No chance, sorry. Maybe look up buying a an sd card preloaded with batocera. You’ll find them on Aliexpress and etsy.
i have the emulators but when i go into game lists into one of them (duck station for example) there’s nothing in the game list. fix?
Probably bad Roms. Check the cheat sheet for the supported Rom formats, and also ensure that you are obtaining them from Legit sources.
What would you suggest if I’m getting error messages in the log menu in steam rom manager after his save to steam? Because I’m not able to get any images for my games.
What does the error actually say?
Do you know how we can emulate 3ds now that Citra is gone?
There are various forks (copies) of citra out there, but unfortunately I haven’t tried any yet, so I cant tell you which is best. To be honest I was never really impressed with Citra so I probably never will…
Do I need a pc to download games to put on my steam deck because I don’t have a pc ?
you can do if from the steam deck directly if you prefer
