  • NZXT has re-re-refreshed its H500 case as an H510, then an H510 Elite, and now an H510 Flow, which, by some miracle, is presumably selling for $110. They eventually sent one.

The pro tip to easily increase airflow is to Dremel out the holes from the grille ( they are put there because of safety laws ) and then manually add a wire fan grille/guard ($2). Easy 20-30% better airflow versus trying to force air through those stamped metal grilles at a few mm offset. They also look fairly attractive as well, making the gaping hole look like it was intended instead of just drilled/cut out.
If the thing is solid metal, just get a 4.5 inch hole saw, and sand the edges afterwards. Drill 4 screw holes, and done. Install the fan(s) and wire grille(s). It will look completely factory provided you measure and align everything.

Have you ever thought of having a test metric for cases, that is focused on a 'best fan option' scenario, where you put the best orientations of fans from your storage shelf, regardless of maker, count or size ... into a case ... to see how good a case 'can be', if enough fans and/or the best cooling setup was used?
    It might:
    - Really show what a case 'could cool like' in a best case setup scenario,
    - inform viewers by way of chart, as to the very best way to set up their home enthusiast builds, for a given case.
Obviously this completely upends any budget build goals, but in most situations enthusiast builders who have spent $1-2000 on parts, would likely order a couple $30+ fans if they 'thought it would do any good' to protect their investment, but have no testing methodology to rely on, as to if it really is helping.
This is probably a hell-hole of difficult when it comes to baseline balancing a chart, which may be why you dont do it.

they have traditionally shyed away from the category of "so you're in love with this case and want to make it work no matter what, here are stages of upgrades to get more out of it" but of course, there are certain cases unique enough that you can find those kinds of reviews, but those cases are often as unique in use-case as they are in style, or cater to specific small groups of people (the cat case behind Steve) so even then, it's super niche and not worth most people's time except as pure entertainment, which is more of a Linus/Bitiwt avenue, and Steve seems content to let them have that space, even though Steve's opinion would arguably be much more valueable than the others

It seems like a valid thought process to believe that NZXT knows this case will sell well regardless of high price because of individuals who understand the importance of airflow, therefore were not willing to purchase the other areas of the H500 series no matter how much they really liked the look. This case is an easy decision for those individuals who really wanted this very popular case design but also wanted decent airflow. Whether or not this high price is a reflection of cost coverage on the business side or profit expansion is up in the air here, but the point still stands.

So... do you think your reviews were the driving force behind so many companies moving towards airflow cases? Was this something the engineers had talked about internally, but were ignored by the suits in favor of more tempered glass & RGB until GN started pointing out the obvious? Or was this something that just wasn't on their radar to begin with?

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +95

I would hope that people realized before us that cases should have airflow, and certainly there's evidence of that, but a lot of the companies became fully entranced by glass back when the industry shifted from plastics / acrylics to tempered glass. Someone added a tempered glass side panel, so to compete, someone else added a tempered glass front panel, and so on. To answer the question: A mix of both. We had a lot of engineers & designers tell us they needed ammunition for management, but there were also several companies that came to us over the years with questions about what they should do. At this point, nearly every major case manufacturer has asked to spend significant time with us at events or on the phone to talk about design (we don't do it as consulting, but if we have time, we'll sometimes give them ideas).

With my latest build, I actually went with a InWin 101 and couldn't be happier. The back side intake (or exhaust for my AIO as I'm using the bottom 3 fans for intake) provides the perfect airflow ratio, at least for how I built. It runs about 60/40 positive with super cheap UpHere fans, but stays cool and quiet, at least by my standards. It could probably do better, but it's great for the $60 I spent on it at the time.

Has 3 5.25" bays which I needed. This case is packed with 2 air cooled GPUs and an air cooled CPU and still holds decent temps, mostly due to the side panel fan intake. I wish case reviews simply had a "Best Thermal Configuration possible" Noise & Thermal test (using whatever amount of Noctua 120/140 ... fans, or even stock ones if bigger special ones).
Most people are willing to buy extra fans for their case instead of leaving it "as bought", and Standardized is kinda dumb as you're putting the same setup in a Mini case or a Huge one, which doesnt make any sense and nobody would do. Which only result in showing the full power of smaller case (that dont have bottom intake) while "nerfing" the big ones.
Most people just want to know how good the case can be, so having a test showing and comparing the best config each of them can achieve would make most sense and be ideal for most watchers instead of Stock and/or Standardized charts.
Afterwall, we're testing how good the given case layout is compared to other cases layouts, so isn't it only normal to utilze it to the best it allow and show that ?
Idealy "Best Thermal Configuration possible" would need two test, one for CPU air cooler and one for CPU AIO cooler, as nowaday AIOs are in at least half of the new builds made.
What I also fear is that some manufacturer start creating cases that do well specificaly in these configs just so it goes high on your charts and it boost their sales, regardless of the actual performance of the case in configs that make more sense for the end-user.
