    Just hope you
learn more about inside your engine. Looks like rust chunks from the cooling galleries. Have you considered pouring gas through the engine and letting it drain and evaporate? I did that with my B20.

I thought it looked that way, too, but nothing else is pointing to a major coolant leak in my mind (water pump probably isn't even working). It could be residue from a previous leak (that I will see when a new water pump is installed), or it could be all the rust from the valve train caused by condensation over the years and washed down into the pan. When I opened the valve cover there was rust in there.
I will pull the engine at some point, but want to keep it rolling for now to work on the suspension and bushings. Don't have the space to take it all apart at once. Maybe I'll get a borescope to look without opening it up :)

Reminds me of rust powder that collects in the fuel pump, and maybe got dumped in the oil when the pump failed.

I've been thinking about this, and why I opened up the old fuel pump. It had a very fine screen going to the carbs, but I think you may be right in that the fuel got past the diaphragm before hitting the screen. The silver lining was that the oil turned to butter and captured all that grit before it got into the valves and pistons too much.
