@@sooverit5529 I think dick Sargent did an ok job. He wasn't as fussy as dick York. I liked though the way Sam would twitch her nose and make things happen.
The show also ran its course. With how they handled replacing Darrin in the show, it was a matter of time before they pulled the plug on it. Still, Bewitched is an excellent show. Thanks for the video Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!
Yes! I heard about this affair on another platform. Such a shame 2 marriages were destroyed. But I think the show had run its course. Thank you Rick 😊 for another great video. 👍
Dick York suffered from emphysema caused by smoking. Dick Sargent replaced York because York was using too many pain killers. Both imo we're great actors.
@@jimshannononsounds yep. Dick York dedicated his last years to homeless people, even though himself he was basically homeless too. Such a sweet soul. I pray for him in heaven all the time. He made me laugh for 40 years. I'm 50 now. Shame on Hollywood for not taking care of their great former actors after they retired. Still making millions on the show. I'd assume.
I saw a video talking a bit more indepth about their marriage and Bill Asher said in later years that "...most of the causes of their breakup....was his own fault...!" I heard that the series was originally going to star Tammy Grimes and the name of her character was going to be "Cassandra"! Also that Dick Sargent was wanted for Darrin in the beginning but wasn't available. I have to wonder - like having Bea Benederet and Gale Gordon playing Ethel and Fred Mertz - if the show would have been successful!
"Bewitched" is coming to Blu Ray early next year. I hope the episodes will look better than the "I Dream of Jeannie" Blu Ray release, which was a disappointment.
I’m so glad you’ve discovered the wonders of Bewitched! I’ve been a mega fan for years. Although I did know about the affair covered in the video, I like how you compared it to Lucy & Desi. I wonder if you’ve seen the episode where Serena and Uncle Arthur basically recreate the Lucy candy factory scene, but with chocolate covered bananas! I’m lucky enough to have seen some of Bewitched (and Here’s Lucy) first run.
Thanks Rick. I really appreciate your channel. Yours is one of the very few that reminds us that celebrities are people, just like us, & often can make dumb, & really awful decisions. Also love that you don't get into spreading ridiculous & mind numbing conspiracies, like so many other channels. Great video, as always. It's sad that Dick York couldn't stay on the series, due to his crippling back pain. What movie was it that he suffered his injury, on again?
Bill Asher had his own affairs too. A few years later he married Joyce Builfant (He didn't know her while he was married before.), who was first married to James MacArthur from HAWAII FIVE-O and later to Bill Mallory of DAYS OF OUR LIVES prior to Asher. After she gave Asher his requested divorce, and after another quick marriage, Joyce Bulifant married Roger Perry, who'd been married to JoAnne Worley for 25 years prior. Ms. Bulifant writes about her life & marriages in her bio MY FOUR HOLLYWOOD HUSBANDS. She was married to Mr. Perry until he died in 2018.
The original Darrin was Bumbling and loveable but the second Darrin came across as intolerant maybe even dare I say bigoted the way interacted with Samantha's relatives.
Possibly. But divorce transcends Hollywood. 50% of all marriages end in divorce. My aim was to look at the affair leading to the divorces which led to the ending of that show. It’s hard to work with your divorced partner on a show like that
I always shake my head when I see season 5-8 episodes that are exact copies (minus a few small things) of episodes from seasons 1-4. Most notably, Ben Franklin and George Washington
Bill Asher was reputed to have had affairs as well. Under these circumstances, it must have been challenging to continue collaborating on the show for any length of time. Fleetwood Mac survived inside affairs and splits, but they agree it wasn't easy. As for the Darrens, I liked Sargent better and heard he was supposed to be the original.
Never get your honey where you get your money. The divorced star and director working together would have been a whacky 70's sitcom. Darren fastens his top button on his PJ's!
True! The constant/unending episodes of Endora putting a "spell" on Darrin had me (as pre-teen) rolling up my eyes. Even Gary Larson (of "Farside" fame) wrote a very funny "panel" on this very thing.
Being human is messy- for all of us, especially celebrities in the spotlight. The show had a great run, I think the Darrin switch probably had more to do with its demise.
Cheaters cheat. Anyway, had Gig Young put the bottle down, he and Elizabeth may have been married longer, and we may have never had a Bewitched series at all.
I had the pleasure of meeting Elizabeth when I was 16 and got her autograph. She was gorgeous. This was in the mid 70s. It was at a Disney movie shooting location near our town. She wasn't in the movie. I believe she was dating the director. There were other notable stars there, too. It was a real treat. Vic Morrow, Joan Hackett, Mills Watson and the legendary Peter Ustinov were all there. The movie is called The Treasure of Matacumbe.
The reason the show ended was because Elizabeth Montgomery and her boyfriend flew to Paris and she said she's not doing any more new episodes. Since they had a contract with ABC, Bill Asher sold them "The Paul Lynde Show". Paul as a perpetually annoyed married man with children and a son-in-law living with him didn't really work.
I loved that show and still watch today. I’m interested to see what you dig up that I do t know yet! LOL. I do know that there are quite a few things that you can find as far as mistakes, seeing wires, seeing Elizabeth’s double when she was Serena etc. can’t wait to see you do more!
This question has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand, but I couldn’t help think about it as I looked at the pics you included with the video. When they filmed Bewitched did they decorate the sets to complement the black and white film being used or did they film it in black and white regardless of how they decorated the sets? As for the topic, unless we were we there, we really don’t know what truly caused the end of the show. It’s probable based on what you’ve said, but even then, that in itself may not be necessarily the case. Great video regardless and as always. I’m looking forward to the next one! 😊
I'm so sorry her marriages dissolved. I wonder if the men were also jealous of her success :( but it takes two (usually) Thank you for reviewing this show ❤ I just prefer the 1st Darren.
I think the series ended because it got tired. The stories were just being re-hashed and the jokes got cornier. I did like the Sabrina and Uncle Arthur episodes, though.
