Years ago, I worked in downtown Seattle. One summer, Grace Slick had an art show at a downtown hotel. I went on my lunch hour. I walked into the large display room and saw a woman sitting in a rattan high backed chair reading a magazine. She looked up as I said, “You would be Grace Slick.” She looked at me and said, “Guilty.” And smiled. We talked about everything under the sun as I was the only person there for the whole hour. Gracious, interesting, well read, amusing and willing to talk about music, Monterey, Woodstock and just about anything. I’ll never forget that afternoon with my all time absolute favorite singer.
The only celebrity I ever met was Brian Dennehy . I was coming back home from Toronto and stopped at a McDonalds just outside London Ontario . He was having lunch with who I assumed was his daughter and her 2 kid's so I walked up and said are you Brian Dennehy , and he said yes I am and seemed willing to give an autograph but they don't interest me so I just said have a good day and placed my order.
Indeed! Stop idolizing these people. They are paid to ACT parts of real or imagined characters based on story books or screenplays. Bottomline, they are the same as everyone else spanning from total degenerate sociopaths to down to earth decent people and everything in between. Best to just keep these people up on screen. The more we get to know them on the inside, the more likely we are to be disappointed. There are the occasional saints like Keanu Reeves, but few and far between.
A lesson to learn: Don't blindly believe everything you hear, as a lot of times it can be complete lies or nonsense. Hopefully, the older you get, the wiser you will be to this. One random video and you take all this as being the whole truth?
Refusing to idolize folks goes hand in hand with not taking these or other things at face value. I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with him for a while when our plane bound for Chicago was forced to land in De Moines Iowa. A tornado had destroyed a hangar in St Louis and it was 18 hours before we were able to get to Indianapolis then on to Chicago. He was just a regular guy. I almost forgot how famous this man is. He's been through so much in his life but, you just wouldn't know he's one of the most famous musicians of all time. ❤😊
We saw Jerry Seinfeld once time outside on a restaurant patio. My son knew how much I liked him and, so, mentioned it to him and asked if I might meet him. Meanwhile, I was still in the car and really did not want to meet him, just seeing him was fine for me. But he asked and Seinfeld's answer was, "No, thank you," a very abrupt and rude, "No, thank you." Well, that certainly ruined my image of him. I have never been star struck, as we live in an area where "celebrity" sightings are very common. After approaching and speaking to many of them, I decided to never do it again. They are never who we think they are and are often very rude. One encounter with Pierce Brosnan really left me cold though. I saw him at a coffee shop. He had dated a friend of mine who had recently passed. I wasn't sure if he knew and, so, decided to tell him. I approached him, and he cut me off mid-sentence, just after I spoke her name, saying, "Not now." And, so, a bit shocked, I walked away, but I did kind of "get even" with him later on. It's funny, He was following me with his eyes, as if he was wanting contact before that. Then, when he got it, he was rude. Many of them react that way I noticed. So, no more approaches for any of them. Although, there have also been some good experiences, like with Ben Stein, Leslie Jordan and Ru Paul.

My late husband, Rhodes Reason, was cast as the Bearded Gaul" in Spartacus. When Rhodes met Kirk, he was friendly. Behind the scenes, Kirk had Rhodes' character cut from the movie. Why? Rhodes was 6'2" and towered over Kirk. Kirk did not like that and had him axed!
Have an Aussie friend who was in the Vietnam War. Returning after being discharged from the Australian Army, he got a job as a crewman on a charter deep sea fishing boat on the Gold Coast. On one trip, everyone had stripped down to their shorts because of the temperature. One of the clients remarked about the scars on my friend's back. "Shrapnel?" He asked, my friend said yes, admitted being wounded in Nam, The man turned and partially pulled down his shorts, exposing a wicked scar on his buttock. "Got it while in the Marines, Saipan." The client was Lee Marvin and whenever he chartered the boat, he'd ask that my friend be on the crew. My friend said Marvin was a regular guy, personable and down to earth , a great story teller, especially on himself, but hated being fawned over. Another friend, a Navy Corpsman at the time, out drinking in Honolulu with some Marine buddies met Marvin who joined and drank with them. He said the same thing about how Marvin behaved.
These folks were then what they call “influencers” today. Total controlled programming instruments, to deliver whatever message or cultural creation is desired by the controller. I remember when the opinion of a celebrity meant something, to the people that followed them. Corey Feldman has made claims over the years. MJ used to have "sleepovers" with boys, took them without their parents on vacation. There was the DEN scandal. Boys were at parties with adult men then given liquor and abused. I believe parents have used their children to support their lifestyle and looked the other way. Have you read how some of the victims of Weinstein were attacked? Many of the women went to meet him for an audition but they were attacked instead. ME? If I were one of those actresses I would've play along, then I would've chomp down on the mans penis and made sure I cut off a part of it. Then I would call police. That would be a story heard the world over. Likely would've been no more victims after that.

My late grandfather was at Boys Town when they shot the film by the same name. He said Mickey Rooney was an entitled asshole to him, calling my grandfather “boy” and demanding that he bring him coffee. He wanted to kick Rooney’s ass. However, he said that if Spencer Tracy had asked for a coffee, my grandfather would have done “cartwheels” for him.
While some of these stories are no doubt true when looked into by neutral parties, the majority turn out to be overblown or malicious envy. What that all does to someone experiencing it from a very young formative age makes me think sometimes that making a child extremely famous kid a form of abuse.
I accidentally ran into Tommy Lee Jones in San Antonio in the 90s. I didn't talk to him because I have a life and was busy. I happened upon him at a popular cafe. I was getting my coffee and looked his way. Apparently, that's not something you should do. He said " don't look at me" i told him he was overrated and left.

I demonstrated an 18th century process to Kirk Douglas in colonial Williamsburg back in the early 80's. He was still to date, the rudest person I've ever met. He stood there talking to his "people" the whole time I talked. He never once looked at me and proceeded to walk off without a word. I had done the demonstration to many famous people and met some wonderful people who were so gracious and down to earth. But him?!?! Then I was told by a staff member that if you aren't blond he won't give you the time of day. What a f-in jerk!

I met Elizabeth Taylor in Charleston in the 80's when she was appearing in the miniseries "North and South". I'd waited for her in the lobby of the Mills House on a tip she was staying there. I walked up to her and said "welcome to Charleston, are you enjoying your stay"? She said "I'm loving every minute, especially the fried chicken and maccaroni and cheese from Piggy Wiggly". We both laughed as I said wise choice for authentic southern food. Of all the renowned restaurants here, she chose takeout from Piggly Wiggly. She seemed very down to earth and was loving her stay in Charleston. Her eyes really are violet & I was pleased she was enjoying our city. Nowadays, Charleston is a mecca for the rich and famous (no thanks to Bravo TV with its ugly, ridiculous & absolutely absurd portrayal of Charleston). But now instead of just visiting, they buy $million dollar second homes; absorbing and GENTRIFYING the city. Driving locals like myself out of the city I love with absorbant NYC-type rent & housing costs. Celebrities can visit our wonderful city & not be bothered by people or paparazzi...and then please go back home!! We're full up!!
When I was 18 months old and my sister a little over 4, my mother was leaving Macy's in NYC and ran my baby carriage into Elizabeth Taylor who was entering. My mother said she had the bluest eyes she'd ever seen. My mother apologized profusely and asked if she was OK. 'Yes I'm OK. Is this your lovely daughter?' 'It's Marty--she's 4 years old.' Elizabeth told Marty she was a pretty little girl. 'This is a young boy in your carriage?' 'That's my son Tom, he's 18 months old. Elizabeth caressed me and told my mother what a handsome young boy I was. Ms. Taylor couldn't have been more gracious. I have no memory but my mother would bring that up on occasion how pleasant and courteous Elizabeth was.
Elizabeth Taylor had developed a taste for okra, and would have one particular restaurant overnight mail orders to her in Los Angeles when she got a hankering. She was a beautiful woman, and I hate to hear that Hollywood didn’t treat her too well until after the studio system was dismantled and she was able to command respect that she was due.

I met Scott Wilson (In Cold Blood) in the Atlanta airport on the way home from a turkey hunting trip while he was playing Hershel on The Walking Dead. Nicest guy you'd ever meet. We got selfies and hung out with him and his wife while waiting for the plane. When we arrived at the destination airport, he couldn't figure out how to get the trunk of his rental car open, so we helped him get it open and get his luggage loaded up. He kept in touch with me over the years until his death.
I can see Rooney as a jerk. Married 8 times only shows his pathetic character. So many of these stars and their flawed personalities and reprehensible behavior just seems so ridiculously unnecessary
It was known in Hollywood that Rooney would set up fake casting calls for young actresses, only to require them to have sex with him for a role in an upcoming movie. Many did, only to find out later the movie never existed.
I read about that Natalie Wood story a few years ago, along with other examples of his behavior. Sounds like he was a horrible guy. I don't know if I'd characterize any of these other actors as "evil" except maybe Kirk Douglas.
Evidence indicates that poor mental health is correlated with celebrity worship. Celebrities are just people. They're professional pretenders. Many (if not most) are narcissists. Some want to be worshipped. Some don't. Some are genuinely good and appreciative people. Many ....are not. Regardless of their respective personality traits (or flaws), none should be placed on any kind of a special pedestal; moreover, it's not thier place to tell us how to think, ...how to vote,... or how to dress, look or live. We each have a duty and responsibibilty to be ourselves and think for ourselves. In the words of Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."

Peter's not bad at all, he came and visited my mom when I was about 14-I wasn't at home, i flipped out when she showed me the photo of him on our living room couch. She would throw things at the tv if she saw Jane, though-I remember having to go buy a new tv set when she put a can opener through the screen. That's when I found out she was my cousin.

This is about a present day actress.... My mother worked for Zcoil shoe company several years back. She was on the phone assisting a customer, the woman bought several pairs of shoes and she was so kind and sweet. She told my mother her name and that shes an actress, my mother apologized,saying shes not familiar with her work. The actress went on to share several of her films. And when their conversation ended she thanked my Mother for being nice to her and that she hoped to talk with her again. The woman is Helena Bonham Carter My mother was so taken with how kind and sweet she is.

I read the story about Douglas and Natalie over 20 years ago written by her sister who said she would write a book about it after Douglas died. Who knew it would take him so long to die. I read at the time that she was 17 yrs old and he should have gone to jail for what he did to her.

Jerry Lewis was a well known jerk. Danny Kaye, Bob hope, Robert Cummings, Bing Crosby, gene Kelly, Chevy Chase, Will Ferrell…so many.. most of these types find that their roles dry up as people don’t want to work with them.
Thank you for mentioning Danny Kaye, who belongs at the top of the list. I sang in the vocal backup group on his very popular show in the 1960s for a few seasons and was stunned at what a jerk he was. He was downright mean to Harvey Korman. I was thrilled when Harvey went across the hall to Carol Burnett’s studio (the greatest lady ever, inside and out) and he got to shine on her show. I cashed in on some good karma as well when I got to work on the Dean Martin Show for 6 years. An absolute prince. I miss you, Boss

Funny also that approx 250 people who knew or worked with Bing were interviewed in decades of outstanding research and it was noted most of them loved him. So who didn't want to work with him???
The sister of Natalie Wood released her biography after the death of Kirk Douglas in which Wood alleges Douglas raped her. Wood had confessed this to her sister soon after it happened but swore her not to reveal it until after Douglas died. This adds credibility to Wood's account.

I think that the line uttered by Shirley Maclaine, in the movie "Bewitched", is more on the money than most people realize when she said (about actors) "... deep down, there is no deep down." I believe that a person's ability to become different characters requires the lack of one's own character. Combine that with the influence of Hollywood, and you usually end up with a less than stellar type of person.

I helped a small boy get out of the pool below a slide in Hawaii 10 yrs ago. Cindy Lauper thanked me and called me a nice man. I shook her hand.:) Nice woman.
Part of the reason why Douglas disappeared towards the end of his career, little bit after Spartacus, he was involved in a scandal where supposedly he severely beat a female fan to the point the the walls were covered in blood in his hotel room because she refused to have sex with him. They had a carrier out on a gurney because she was completely unconscious, and if I remember the story correctly he beat her so severely that her face was disfigured from the beating. I forget which studio he was signed with at the time, but they had to pay off the victim, the hospitals, law enforcement, and the papers so the story would not get out in the public. They just basically quietly shelved him and basically made him disappear. It's like he made a whole bunch of films all of a sudden, this happened and he was gone. Wasn't just Natalie Wood that he did this to, it was other woman as well.
I was taking the scenic drive on H2 or H3 in Hawaii so I stopped to check out the view. There was another car already there. The elderly gentleman was looking out and seemed to be thinking. I said boy that’s a nice view, and he turned and said “Yes, it is”. I recognized him immediately. It was Donald Sutherland. I smiled and he did too and I got back in my car and drove off. I would never have thought to bother him for an autograph or anything like that.

I watched a 60 minutes segment about 30 years ago, where they followed Jerry Lewis around, as he spoke about his work with Jerry’s Kids. It was suppose to be a behind the scenes look into his life. He was soooo rude to his staff. Belittling them, swearing & yelling. He was so nasty, I was gobsmacked. Use to be a fan of his old movies with Dean Martin. After seeing that, can’t stand him.

Yes, Uncle Milton made the list. Decades ago, my husband and I were flying back home from one of many ski trips out west with another couple who were our best friends. On the way home we had to wait between flights and stepped into a small restaurant. Seated at a table with four or five young men was Milton. I recognized him immediately and said softly to my friends that’s Milton B. He must have had super hearing, because he started at us with a look that was pure EVIL! Fortunately the place was not crowded and we chose a table as far away from that old man as we could get. I always thought that he was an overacting actor, anyway. Just one more Hollywood jerk. They are a dime a dozen. But some of the actors I’ve had the pleasure to meet or known were very sweet and classy. Amount these are James Garner and Bill Cobbs. In 1990 our house was used in the Hallmark Hall of fame movie “Decoration Day’. They spent a week or so at our place. I enjoyed hanging around with them. Both were very kind and sweet to us. ❤❤❤

A few years back, by chance, I was seated next to Jerry West - no one in the middle seat. Was a late night flight - little over an hour. What a warm, friendly and gracious Gentleman. We had the most amazing conversation covering all things basketball from his school years, to the NBA, to the AllStars and what it took to become one - what the other players were like, even the books he enjoyed reading, his family - he was a walking book of deep knowledge. Trust me, I listened smiling - he talked. I didn't want to break the magic. Flight landed and we headed in different directions. Will never forget his kindness. WOW Superstar all the way.
Years ago, I worked in downtown Seattle. One summer, Grace Slick had an art show at a downtown hotel. I went on my lunch hour. I walked into the large display room and saw a woman sitting in a rattan high backed chair reading a magazine. She looked up as I said, “You would be Grace Slick.” She looked at me and said, “Guilty.” And smiled.

He was having lunch with who I assumed was his daughter and her 2 kid's so I walked up and said are you Brian Dennehy , and he said yes I am and seemed willing to give an autograph but they don't interest me so I just said have a good day and placed my order.

Indeed! Stop idolizing these people. They are paid to ACT parts of real or imagined characters based on story books or screenplays. Bottomline, they are the same as everyone else spanning from total degenerate sociopaths to down to earth decent people and everything in between. Best to just keep these people up on screen. We saw Jerry Seinfeld once time outside on a restaurant patio. My son knew how much I liked him and, so, mentioned it to him and asked if I might meet him. Meanwhile, I was still in the car and really did not want to meet him, just seeing him was fine for me. But he asked and Seinfeld's answer was, "No, thank you," a very abrupt and rude, "No, thank you." Well, that certainly ruined my image of him. I have never been star struck, as we live in an area where "celebrity" sightings are very common. After approaching and speaking to many of them, I decided to never do it again. They are never who we think they are and are often very rude. One encounter with Pierce Brosnan really left me cold though. I saw him at a coffee shop. He had dated a friend of mine who had recently passed. I wasn't sure if he knew and, so, decided to tell him. I approached him, and he cut me off mid-sentence, just after I spoke her name, saying, "Not now." And, so, a bit shocked, I walked away, but I did kind of "get even" with him later on. It's funny, He was following me with his eyes, as if he was wanting contact before that. Then, when he got it, he was rude. Many of them react that way I noticed. So, no more approaches for any of them. Although, there have also been some good experiences, like with Ben Stein, Leslie Jordan and Ru Paul.

Have an Aussie friend who was in the Vietnam War.
Returning after being discharged from the Australian Army, he got a job as a crewman on a charter deep sea fishing boat on the Gold Coast.

Another friend, a Navy Corpsman at the time, out drinking in Honolulu with some Marine buddies met Marvin who joined and drank with them.
He said the same thing about how Marvin behaved.

My late grandfather was at Boys Town when they shot the film by the same name. He said Mickey Rooney was an entitled asshole to him, calling my grandfather “boy” and demanding that he bring him coffee. He wanted to kick Rooney’s ass. I demonstrated an 18th century process to Kirk Douglas in colonial Williamsburg back in the early 80's. He was still to date, the rudest person I've ever met. He stood there talking to his "people" the whole time I talked. He never once looked at me and proceeded to walk off without a word. I had done the demonstration to many famous people and met some wonderful people who were so gracious and down to earth. But him?!?! I met Elizabeth Taylor in Charleston in the 80's when she was appearing in the miniseries "North and South". I'd waited for her in the lobby of the Mills House on a tip she was staying there. I walked up to her and said "welcome to Charleston, are you enjoying your stay"? She said "I'm loving every minute, especially the fried chicken and maccaroni and cheese from Piggy Wiggly". We both laughed as I said wise choice for authentic southern food. Of all the renowned restaurants here, she chose takeout from Piggly Wiggly. She seemed very down to earth and was loving her stay in Charleston. Her eyes really are violet & I was pleased she was enjoying our city.
Nowadays, Charleston is a mecca for the rich and famous (no thanks to Bravo TV with its ugly, ridiculous & absolutely absurd portrayal of Charleston). But now instead of just visiting, they buy $million dollar second homes; absorbing and GENTRIFYING the city. Driving locals like myself out of the city I love with absorbant NYC-type rent & housing costs. Celebrities can visit our wonderful city & not be bothered by people or paparazzi...and then please go back home!! We're full up!!
When I was 18 months old and my sister a little over 4, my mother was leaving Macy's in NYC and ran my baby carriage into Elizabeth Taylor who was entering. My mother said she had the bluest eyes she'd ever seen. My mother apologized profusely and asked if she was OK. 'Yes I'm OK. Is this your lovely daughter?' 'It's Marty--she's 4 years old.' Elizabeth told Marty she was a pretty little girl. 'This is a young boy in your carriage?' 'That's my son Tom, he's 18 months old. Elizabeth caressed me and told my mother what a handsome young boy I was.
Ms. Taylor couldn't have been more gracious. I have no memory but my mother would bring that up on occasion how pleasant and courteous Elizabeth was.

I met Scott Wilson (In Cold Blood) in the Atlanta airport on the way home from a turkey hunting trip while he was playing Hershel on The Walking Dead. Nicest guy you'd ever meet. We got selfies and hung out with him and his wife while waiting for the plane. When we arrived at the destination airport, he couldn't figure out how to get the trunk of his rental car open, so we helped him get it open and get his luggage loaded up. He kept in touch with me over the years until his death.

She told my mother her name and that shes an actress, my mother apologized,saying shes not familiar with her work. The actress went on to share several of her films. And when their conversation ended she thanked my Mother for being nice to her and that she hoped to talk with her again. The woman is Helena Bonham Carter
My mother was so taken with how kind and sweet she is.

Part of the reason why Douglas disappeared towards the end of his career, little bit after Spartacus, he was involved in a scandal where supposedly he severely beat a female fan to the point the the walls were covered in blood in his hotel room because she refused to have sex with him. They had a carrier out on a gurney because she was completely unconscious, and if I remember the story correctly he beat her so severely that her face was disfigured from the beating. I forget which studio he was signed with at the time, but they had to pay off the victim, the hospitals, law enforcement, and the papers so the story would not get out in the public. They just basically quietly shelved him and basically made him disappear. It's like he made a whole bunch of films all of a sudden, this happened and he was gone. Wasn't just Natalie Wood that he did this to, it was other woman as well.

My aunt was a costume designer in the 50s and 60s in Hollywood. She told me that Jerry Lewis made every young female costar burst out in tears in every movie he made.
A lot of these people aren't more than rude. It's awful to me that Welles' private conversation with someone that included frank opinions and observations of others in Hollywood should be made public, for example. That doesn't make him evil. 😢😮

Yes, Uncle Milton made the list. Decades ago, my husband and I were flying back home from one of many ski trips out west with another couple who were our best friends. On the way home we had to wait between flights and stepped into a small restaurant. Seated at a table with four or five young men was Milton. I recognized him immediately and said softly to my friends that’s Milton B. He must have had super hearing, because he started at us with a look that was pure EVIL! Fortunately the place was not crowded and we chose a table as far away from that old man as we could get. I always thought that he was an overacting actor, anyway. Just one more Hollywood jerk. They are a dime a dozen. But some of the actors I’ve had the pleasure to meet or known were very sweet and classy. Amount these are James Garner and Bill Cobbs. In 1990 our house was used in the Hallmark Hall of fame movie “Decoration Day’. They spent a week or so at our place. I enjoyed hanging around with them. Both were very kind and sweet to us. ❤❤❤

A few years back, by chance, I was seated next to Jerry West - no one in the middle seat. Was a late night flight - little over an hour. What a warm, friendly and gracious Gentleman. We had the most amazing conversation covering all things basketball from his school years, to the NBA, to the AllStars and what it took to become one - what the other players were like, even the books he enjoyed reading, his family - he was a walking book of deep knowledge. Trust me, I listened smiling - he talked. I didn't want to break the magic. Flight landed and we headed in different directions. Will never forget his kindness. WOW Superstar all the way.
