Thanks for that information. I guess camera tricks saved studios from having to build so many different houses. They could just use camera angles and complex shots to trick the viewer into believing a neighborhood or street is much, much larger and locations are actually somewhere else. Brilliant! On a different note: I always felt sorry for poor old, nosey Gladys, especially when Abner disregarded her. I nicknamed my dog, Gladys Kravitz because she is always keeping an eye on the neighbors and lets me know when something is amiss.

Bill Asher had said it was tricky to shoot when Gladys was coming across the street, since she is supposed to live across the street from Darrin and Sam. Another piece of hard work is when Sam and Endora were putting in and removing the hedges, plants, and trees. These were all done by stage hands. The cast and crew had to go back and forth from the studio to the Ranch. When people see Sam and Endora walking into the house, they're in the studio. They built a replica of the front of house facade on the studio set. When they opened the front door, they used backdrops to show the street and the houses across the street, sometimes with their lights on. There is a scene in THE MOMENT OF TRUTH, when Sam opens the door and sees aaunt Clara comes down on a parachute, the backdrop shows trees, instead of houses. ??
Darrin got a new Chevrolet every year same as miss Hathaway got a new plymouth and Andy Griffith a new ford..and I dream of Jeannie got a new Pontiac...etc etc .product sponsorship was something else back then..
There are lots of bloopers with the Camaros and Chevelles. They switched cars from scene to scene that looked almost identical, but with different wheels and trim rings. Look for the episode with a pea green 1968 Chevelle Sta Wagon w/wood grain panels owned by Mr. Kravitz . The wheels change from one scene to the next. Also the blue Camaro convertible driven by Darrin changed from rally wheels to hub caps in the same episode. I read that the local dealer in the area of the studio was responsible to supply the new Chevrolet vehicles daily. It would likely be that those cars were returned at the end each day and the next day would bring a replacement with different trim maybe because the first car was sold.
Of course, this wasn't done just on "Bewitched". It's been done all the time on TV and in movies. It gets especially crazy when there's a car chase and distant locations in a city--or even two different cities--are cobbled together to look like one continuous route.

I suspect they used stand-ins for Elizabeth Montgomery and Agnes Moorehead in the wide shots and we're seeing the characters from behind. A lot of work had to be done on the day(s) of shooting these sequences of the house being constantly changed. I'm sure they didn't want to have the actresses outside while all of this is being set up. It could have been a second unit doing the wide shots with all the changes.
I noticed that too by watching part episodes on TH-cam and noticed that Mrs Kravitz was suppose to be across the road but when they showed that, there was park there.
What I always wondered watching this episode was just how much time and careful continuity planning it took to gradually add in all of the landscaping and such that Samantha and Endora are zapping in and out while discussing the house’s potential. Bewitched was such a fun show.
Gladys coming out of the Partridge house? Can you imagine Samantha getting annoyed with the Partridge Family practicing in the garage and "doing something about it" Just the idea of Danny and Sam in the same block makes me happy. Who would be the Hottest Housewife- Sam or Shirley?!
The Bewitched house was only a front and partial sides with no finished interior. All of the interior shots were in a sound studio. Some of the houses on the Warner Brothers Ranch were fully finished. These houses and buildings were used on many shows and films over the years. The Kravitz (Partridge Family) house was last used in Young Sheldon as Memaw's house, which was supposed to be across the street from Sheldon's house. In reality, they weren't anywhere near each other. Memaw's house was shown destroyed by a tornado near the end of the series, which was really Blondie Street being demolished for redevelopment. The Warner Brothers Ranch had a lot of history. Too bad it couldn't have been saved!
The TV series "The Middle" used this street also, probably one of the last series to do so. When they used exterior shots you could see the "Bewitched" house up the street from their house and I believe the church could be seen as well.
I worked on Wanda Vision and the series was shot there. Wanda Vision was one of the first shows shot during COVID after the initial shut down. We shot in front of almost every house and the pool area. The series was originally shot in Atlanta, but COVID changed that.
I always info on the "backlot" simulations of streets, homes, etc. I have noticed in TV eps or old serials how *narrow* streets were: *because* they were crafted sets on a backlot. Dimensions notched down a little to save on space and money yet they could actually become functional if needed. (And how the same "on the street" sets show up in Andy Griffith or Star Trek, of course! Some entertainment park needs to craft a wandering amusement of a backlot which represents many styles and genres!)
I'm always really sad when I think about them destroying the ranch. All of that incredible history is gone forever. Oh well, I guess we should be used to it by now.
I always found it facinating that they always filmed the inside of the front door from the side, never permitting us to look through the door, and never letting us see the room who's wall we were looking at.
Hi Rick I'm a huge fan of Elizabeth Montgomery and Bewitched and still love it like crazy. Tho the repeat of scripts is kinda Odd, do you know why this was done so often in Bewitched?
Gladys Kravitz is probably my favorite character on the show. 😁 It's just such a shame the original Gladys Kravitz died of cancer after just a year and a half.

When watching the Partridge Family, as the bus would leave their house and go to our left, you could see the Bewitched house straight ahead. Those houses were used in a lot of shows. Bewitched house appeared in one episode of Home Improvement. I believe it was Al's aunts house in that episode. Also, one of those houses is where Dennis the Menace lived with Mr. Wilson living next door. I believe Dennis lived in the same house as the Partridge Family. Mr. Wilson lived in the same house used for Major Nelson from I Dream of Jeannie. I often wondered how the show might have been affected if they had used another house in that neighborhood. The Bewitched house was, to me, a character in the show. Thanks for the stroll down Morning Glory Circle.
A few years ago, I saw that fountain in a BEWITCHED episode where Samantha leads a campaign to clean up a neglected park. I realized it was the same fountain that figured in OMEGA MAN, a fave film (and Neville's townhouse was facing it!), and that prompted me to seek out the backlot location. The fountain's also seen in the opening credits of FRIENDS.
A couple of years ago as I was looking out the front window at some goings-on across the street, my roommate asked me, “What’s going on, Gladys?” We had a good laugh and I responded, “I’m Kravitzing.” I figured out that I had just invented a brand new verb to describe the art of peeking out the window to check out what the neighbors were up to. I decided to check the internet to see if my brand new verb had ever been used. Much to my dismay, someone posted it to the Urban Dictionary in 2007. So much for my “original” thought!
The "Blondie" house next to the "Partridge" house (aka Kravitz house) was also the home earlier of the Andersons of FATHER KNOWS BEST and just a bit later as Tony & Jeannie's house on I DREAM OF JEANNIE. Sam & Darrin's house could be seen in the IDOJ original opening credits and in at least 1 PARTRIDGE FAMILY episode when the Partridges drive their bus toward it.
With the 2nd episode, yes it shows Endora & Samantha walking into the house, when Gladys looks in the window, it's actually part of the house structure not the interior, I've several books about Bewitched & that's the secret of the house, plus if you're really paying attention, the living room is the set of Hazel, the kitchen doesn't look like any of the other shows, but you really have to pay close attention to the little things you may not have noticed watching Bewitched
The memories of all these shows from the golden age of TV will live on longer, and hold more interest than the new Warner Brothers Studio complex which is under construction.
My niece works there. The ranch was over 75 years old, and it was falling apart. I call it mockingbird heights, and my wife calls it Whisteria lane. As someone pointed out, these were shells! Some just props. Not the clock tower remains and other buildings and stuff like the L train tracks. Small stores from seinfeld and friends. In fact, if you get a chance to go on the tour, it's well worth the money!
The wonderful Alice Pearce (as Gladys Kravitz) was an accomplished Broadway, television, and film actress. I have a couple of Broadway "Playbills" signed by her which I treasure. Sadly, she was fighting cancer at this time and would pass away in early March 1966 - during the second season of the show. Miss Pearce never told anyone that she was fighting cancer as she felt it would make her unemployable. There was a real stigma about the disease back in the day.
I never noticed any of that as a kid. I was more focused on why she put up with her husband treating her like a servant when she had such powers and could be anywhere in the world with whomever she chose. Never understood that, even as a 10 year old. 😁
With editing and good actors, that’s how you make a tv show! When the actors convince you that there is a house where there isn’t a house, then they have done their job. The whole backlot with all those homes, were used is no many shows and movies, that the only way ti make them look as if they were in a complete different subdivision, was to edit, and use different angle shots. The fact that the backlot had been there so long, I’m surprised it didn’t look like a slum area. But apparently they had a crew keeping it up until it was demolished. Hated to see it go.
Rick was it always this way ? Every time they filmed . Glady’s was really just acting and did not see the Steven’s house ? Please do more Bewitched, it is my favorite. Any chance you could do a Bewitched video giveaway ?
I thought that was known more as the Warners Bros backlot in Burbank, but it was originally managed by Screen Gems/Columbia. A few YT vloggers have covered it being recently torn down to make way for soundstages. I recall years ago seeing the facade used for Bewitched but never noticed until recently the large power lines above the house. Those lines were undergrounded years ago, which I'm surprised Warners (or Columbia) never had done from the beginning.
I've noticed this before. The house shown behind them is actually right next door. This was Hazel's house, Gidget's house, and during one of the later Bewitched episodes, it was the home of "Danger O'Reilly". I guess it was a more pleasant looking background than if they had shot it in the actual location, which would have shown a street behind them in the distance.
Just a side note.............the house you have labeled as the "Blondie House" was also the house for the Andersons in "Father knows Best", Mr. Wilson in "Dennis the Menace" and Jeannie in "I Dream of Jeannie". The house you've got labeled as the "Oliver House" was also where Dennis the Menace lived. The Hazel house was also where Gidget (Sally Fields) lived/filmed. The park was used in virtually of these shows and others including anything from Monkees videos to the opening of the TV show "Friends" (the fountain). I believe all of this neighborhood was sadly torn down this year.
4:46 Someone could probably do a complete video of the structures on Blondie Street at Columbia Ranch (the backlot of Columbia Pictures) and how each one was incorporated in various films, TV shows and commercials over the years.
Alice Pearce was the best Gladys Kravitz. Unfortunately she was very ill with Ovarian Cancer, but continued to work up until the point where she could not. The characters Samantha Stephens and the first Gladys Kravitz socialized with each other. This was never the case with Sandra Gould.
I'm confused. That one shot from outside, showing the inside foyer with the staircase. Was that actually taken from the outside of the house / facade? Or was it taken in the studio with a recreation of the outside entrance looking into the house? I assumed the house was just a facade, so there wouldn't be an interior to see when you open the door?
Awesome observation. The show is a little bit before my time but I used to watch reruns and I recently binged the entire thing. Find some more stuff and post it!
Abner!! It really isn’t a house! LOL. Kind of got lost in your explanation, but I trust your knowledge. Fun stuff, Rick. 😊

That house has always been my favorite house of classic tv..I also liked the country house of I love Lucy
Why didn't Darrin not wear a wedding ring in the show?
Some men don't....
The memories of all these shows from the golden age of TV will live on longer, and hold more interest than the new Warner Brothers Studio complex which is under construction.
I think Maxwell Smart put it best, when he banged on a door and then fell through to the other side: "I think this address is a front!"
I loved that house though the kitchen in the last few seasons always co fused me, The first Gladys was so great I the role
I got lost in that explanation 😂 But yeah. Gladys' house wasn't really across the street. They just made it seem like it was 😅 Very clever editing.
Gladys was an early version of a Karen…
Let's remember. Bewitched was a fantasy.
And of course, they need all those 'outside' shots to record everyone driving around the street in their (Bewitched-sponsored) CHEVROLETS. haha
I always loved her house.
For a moment the kitchen counter from the second episode looked like the one from I Love Lucy. 0:56
Well, William Asher directed both Bewitched AND I Love Lucy so there may be some influence there
Great video I've heard that they fooled us into believing what you've said.
4:46 Someone could probably do a complete video of the structures on Blondie Street at Columbia Ranch (the backlot of Columbia Pictures) and how each one was incorporated in various films, TV shows and commercials over the years.
great video thanks for sharing this
Alice Pearce was the best Gladys Kravitz. Unfortunately she was very ill with Ovarian Cancer, but continued to work up until the point where she could not. The characters Samantha Stephens and the first Gladys Kravitz socialized with each other. This was never the case with Sandra Gould.
What I can't believe is that you thought people actually wanted to know this.
I just realized that im more and more like Mrs kravitz as i get older.
Interesting how when they show Darren's car, the license plate doesn’t show a state! Anyone know what state they lived in?
I'm confused. That one shot from outside, showing the inside foyer with the staircase. Was that actually taken from the outside of the house / facade? Or was it taken in the studio with a recreation of the outside entrance looking into the house? I assumed the house was just a facade, so there wouldn't be an interior to see when you open the door?
Blondie house also was the I dream of Jeannie house.
Isn’t that the Colonel/ Dr.Bellows house on “I Dream Of Jeannie” show???
It is!
Awesome observation. The show is a little bit before my time but I used to watch reruns and I recently binged the entire thing. Find some more stuff and post it!
Two opinions....Black and white is so much better for most shows, and E.M's hairstyle is so much hotter in the early episodes.
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank youuuu
