    I've been overlanding in my Ford Expedition. When I return home to Texas, a trailer build is my top priority! I'm sick and tired of everything rattling around in the back, no matter how well I secure everything! LOL ... Also, I feel that a rooftop tent would just last longer on a trailer that would be stored in my workshop when not in use. I can't wait to see the rest of your build!

    I know you haven’t gotten this far yet, but if you mount bare alyminum against bare steel anywhere the aluminum will sacrifice itself and turn to white ash. I recommend using a structural adhesive from 3M, 7333 and rivet the parts together. This will make it a lot stiffer and less apt to decay the aluminum or steel.
    I’m a high end Autobody repair technician of … many years. Hope this helps.

    If it would've been mean, i'd have to talk to the center bar all the way back and leave a short section out the back of the trailer. That way you could have a receiver on there. For hooking your you're bicycles or whatever. A little luggage rack on there or whatever. And then that way, you got a little bit more room to carry something.

    When I built a custom trailer for a family member. I put the metal on the inside of fender and on the top. Then squared off the front and rear for Jerry cans for fuel. We did that to both sides. On the front tongue to the outside I made brackets for propane tanks, water, and storage for jacks, tools, and such for break downs. In the bottom if the frame I used angle iron to act as bumpers and mesh to help protect the under side. Kinda a reinforcement for the frame. With all the bells and whistles he wanted. It came out indestructible. Has well over 50k miles on it and still going strong!

    • @Adv4x4
      @Adv4x4  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s awesome! It’s fun because the possibilities are pretty endless when making a custom trailer. Lots of fun to be able to make it exactly what you need vs what’s available for purchase.

    • @N2NDF
      @N2NDF 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Adv4x4 Exactly! Another family member liked the first one, he wants one. I will be making it this winter. I'm not sure what he wants as options but it's gunna be fun. I'm tig welding all the joints and frame. I will be also building a brush guard off the tongue so there is more storage and keeps it out of the sleeping space. Solar power battery box, tool box, propane storage, water Jerry cans, and fuel jerry cans. Or all fuel. He did say he wanted to try a small generator compartment in case batteries go dead. That way he can carry a small welder for emergency repairs. Just some things he's shared so far.

      I’d like to learn to tig weld one day forsure!

    • @N2NDF
      @N2NDF 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's easy to learn. But it takes practice. I'd say the hardest part is finding your sweet spot. Meaning finding the settings that work for most metal thicknesses. I learned to Arc weld by being given the handle and being told to learn by myself. It took a few months and then I got the hang of it. Same with Mig and Tig. Tig welding I learned on car bodies. I was helping work on a '32 roadster. I learned real quick... And have been having fun since. I'm not the perfect welder everytime, but I've had nothing break since I started.

    I can do most things easily, but I can’t cut steel flush, I have a Cut Off Saw but I don’t like the lousy way it cuts.
    I like your cutter but I don’t plan to do a lot of fabrication.
    Anyway! I contacted the steel supplier and asked them if they could cut the lengths if I gave them measurements, such as 6 pieces 5’ long, 10 piece pieces 1” square 4’ long and so on. They said sure no problem, over 25 pieces he said he’d have to charge me 10.00

    I wonder if you could use the frame cavity as a compressed air reservoir if welded as such.

    • @RyanNash20
      @RyanNash20 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theoretically, yes. But since it's a trailer meant to be taken offroad, there's plenty of opportunities to hit rocks and puncture your "air tank" I'd also imagine the total volume it could hold would be relatively low. A little 2 gallon tank mounted somewhere above the frame at the end would probably be more effective. Could even tuck it underneath the trailer with a skid plate, especially if you're already putting a water tank under

  • @jasoncrawford1465

    I'm WAY late asking, but I've been looking at building my own trailer using this system. You did pretty much exactly what i want to do, i even have a 1st gen tacoma its going to pull behind.
    My question is how did you determine what timbren system to go with in order to achieve desire ride height? I know i need a 2000lb HD system to accommodate finished weight, and the 16" 5.5 pattern rims with 32"x11" tires. I just havent been able to determine how far below the frame the center hub for the wheel hangs below the mounting point on the trailer. If I knew that, i should be able to figure out ride height by roughly adding 16" to account for tire height. I think anyways..

      @NestecStudios ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The following is for the 2000lb HD suspension systems. This is the distance from the bottom of the frame to the center of the hub spindle by model number.
      ASR2KHDS01. 3 13/16”
      ASR2KHDS02. 3 13/16”
      ASR2KHDS03. 7 1/2”
      ASR2KHDS04. 7 1/2”
      ASR2KHDS05. 0”
      ASR2KHDS09. 0”
      ASR2KHDS12. 7 1/2”
      ASR2KHDS13. 5 11/16”
      ASR2KHDS14. 3 13/16”
      They also make 2200lb and 3500lb models with various spacing numbers.

      I have done little bits of welding here and there for years. Nothing substantial enough to learn as much as I’ve learned during this build alone though. If you watch a few TH-cam videos on welding and then practice you will find it’s not too hard. Also the trailer frame itself weighs about 118lbs 👍🏼

    Hate to tell you but the tongue is going to bend. You either need thicker material or taller. Like 2"x3" with the 3" being the vertical. My buddy used 2"x3"x.120" wall but didn't listen to me and put the 3" has the horizontal. It started bending the first time using it. He ended up cutting it out and replacing with thicker.

      Enclose the $5.00 fee in form of check with the filled out application.

      Eventually, they will mail you back an assigned VIN plate and your paper. (You can avoid the wait if you visit dmv in person with the paper filled out)
      Install VIN plate as per instructions on paper.
      Call your local state police department and they will send out a trooper to inspect the trailer VIN plate installation.
      He will sign the paper and return it to you.
      Bring the signed off paper back to DMV and they will issue you a title & tags 👍🏼

    Honest question. Why have all terrain tires on a trailer?

    • @Adv4x4
      @Adv4x4  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aside from the fact that I bought the wheels with those tires already on there; if you are towing an offroad trailer down a trail it is exposed to the same hazards the tires on the tow vehicle are susceptible too (sharp rocks, sticks, ect) So for that reason having a durable tire that can handle the trail it’s being towed on is important.
      Also if your trailer has the same lug pattern and tire size as your tow vehicle your spare tire now covers your trailer. As well as your trailer now covers your tow vehicle in case of the unlikely event that you need more then one spare to get out of there. 👍🏼

    A 6 foot tongue on a 6 foot trailer seems excessive. What was the reason for making it that long?

    • @Adv4x4
      @Adv4x4  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I explain in the video my reasoning, but mainly because I have a swing out tire gate on the back of my truck. So I wanted to be able to open that even with a bike loaded. As well as the longer the trailer the better it tracks and backs up. Aside from that other small reasons is to haul my 14’ canoe or 12’ pieces of lumber etc.
