    This difference took me YEARS to figure out and I think I've only recently realized it. Focusing on speed this summer has been interesting, so much so I plan on continuing it for the rest of 2024 and likely 2025 (video on this in Sept/Oct). It took me about 4 months to break the habit, as a marathoner, of stressing about volume. Once I broke that running has been much less stressful, workouts have been more focused and easy running has become much more easy. It is a process.

    As I am focusing on the half at the moment , my work is more about icreasing speed (but it is just small tweeks from the coach) but it does mean that my longest run at the moments (my steasy / top of MAF range) is 90 minutes (like Matt, Paul uses time too and not distance). Thanks for sharing your run and thoughts. Re you guys and later in life .. it is all relative .. The tet offensive was going on when I was born 🤣 . This being the case I will never fully go down the speed route being a late starter, there is not enough time in the day for an older hobby jogger to fit in the required rest and push the boat out on volume .. while maintaining a job , family etc.. happy to plod along and see small incrementle improvements.

      Thanks JBS. 90 min steasy is just mentally tough as 90 min zone 3 or MP for me....well almost. Still, it's a lot on the body. It is super challenging with family and work to get in the required rest and recovery. Speaking of which, hope the recovery is going well.

    You've been smashing it on speed, I'm very curious to see the difference that will make to your marathon training.
    As for fueling for the long runs, I've seen a big difference in the last few months since I've been more consistent on that, right now I'm using some cliff bloks (energy chews with caffeine) that I found at a nice deal - having said that, I'm debating if regular fruit jellies would do the trick at a fraction of the cost.
    This vlog style video was really nice, especially since you could do it without being out of breath, it's something I can't stand as well 🤣

    Nice video, like hearing your stream-of-thought while running. My friend, a runner for 20+ years, admonishes all of us for turning off our watches during water and pee breaks. She says that, not only does the official clock keep going during a race, but a genuine reflection of effort is only to see the entire workout "in the raw". The next workout might be faster or slower, but *must* be compared in its totality to know if it is improved from a prior run. "If you want to impress your Strava friends, why not run quarter miles at 5:40 pace and take a five minute break between each by shutting off your watch...after 13.1 miles, your Strava followers will think you're an Olympian," she jokes to us. There's truth there though, I feel. What do you think, @MidLifeRunner??

    • @MidLifeRunner
      @MidLifeRunner  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Brilliant! I think it’s a big jump to assume a motivation of impressing Stravians as the root cause. I could care less what others think because I know they don’t care what I run. But she absolutely nailed the first part - as you can’t really know comparative efforts unless they’re the same - if one needs to compare. I think the biggest point is that you can’t stop a watch during a race, so you shouldn’t stop the watch during a run. But that only makes sense if you’re doing a work out. For easy runs, I think it maters a lot less.

    This is why I'm on team "don't stop your watch". I'd rather have a bad split than forget to the start the watch again and run "undocumented miles". Plus, i figure "The clock's not going to stop for me at aid stations or emergency bathroom breaks. It is what it is 🤷🏻‍♂️" That said, I'm also guilty of telling myself pace doesn't matter on long runs and then thinking about my pace the whole run, which might be why you stopped your watch in the first place?

    • @MidLifeRunner
      @MidLifeRunner  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      🤣 yes. Either way it’s not accurate tracking . If I let the watch run, the data will show regression of fitness and if I pause it, the overall HR at the given pace and effort will be false and overly forgiving . I think I just needed to fuel a little better or get some more sleep 😂

    You're talking like it is easy, but your Easy is only like 30 seconds off your marathon, which seems crazy. Marathon for me is 7:10. Easy is 8:55. I can probably run faster in zone 2, but turn off the brain, default no effort speed has never gotten faster for me in a few years of training. Did your Easy come down without noticing or are you pushing to see what's possible in zone 2?

    • @MidLifeRunner
      @MidLifeRunner  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s a good difference! I think they say easy pace should be about 90-120 seconds slower a mile than MP. My zone 2 HR cap is 147 but I try to land around 140-141, even if it slows me down on most my easy days. I also have zone 1 low zone 2 days at 129-130bpm, especially after hard workouts or long run days. My easy pace has come down. For the Houston marathon, pushing the easy pace was 8:00 , most days were 8:15-8:30, recovery days were 9:00.
      I think the speed block the last 4 1/2 months has dropped my easy pace by 30 seconds at the same efforts, therefore the target of my marathon has to shift also from a sub 3 more toward a sub 2:50 based on those paces. The solution for me is to run by effort. The HR will reflect it and the pace will be whatever it will be. I can look back at previous marathons run well to get a good gauge of where the HR should be but I also know MP effort pretty well . Once the marathon training starts at the end of this week, I will have a better idea of what I’m capable of running :)
