This is the classic Matt Fox technique 😂 Continually say you or someone else is in shape for X time and never run it. I like Matt and his Sweat Elite videos are great but this is the biggest annoyance of mine with him. You've never broken 3 dude, just go for 2:55-2:59...
LOVE the philosophy of running to effort/time for training. You and Matt can figure out what exact race pace is when you’re closer to the race and know the race day temps. I don’t think a lot of commenters realize that you’ve made a huge leap in your fitness but you were almost basically at 3 at Houston. Plus, a “Breaking 2:58” Thumb Nail just doesn’t have the click bait factor like 2:50 does.” Tune out the noise and don’t get too greedy with your fitness. You have ten weeks to get more fit, but staying healthy is the most important thing! Cheers.
Thanks for the support Shannon! My Prime X Strung just hit 600miles today btw. I definitely will connect with the coach and see what our plan is for the race , especially with so much elevation in the first 15k. I know for certain I will not sandbag my fitness and coast to a sub 3 if I’m in much better shape. I’m going to go for it
Preaching to the choir, brother. Switching to a “running by effort” approach last fall produced more progress for me than I’d ever seen before. Life is too short not to shoot for goals that excite and terrify at the same time.
Be careful not to get over confident, I wouldn't think about going sub 2:50 and focus on breaking 3. You picked a non-flat marathon to do this and while you are in shape, keep your mind on the first goal. Next year we can see you going for the sub 2:50.
all research on endurance that I've seen says if you can sing a bar or two from the Canadian anthem during your long run, then no doubt about it, you are on par to crush sub 2:50, you have arrived - congrats!
The point at the end you make is very important... Firstly, plated shoes are very fun! And while you may lose some "work" you put in - it also developes muscles you use IN plated shoes. One of the biggest mistakes - healthwise - I see is people who run in plated shoes only during races. The injury risk increases a lot. I think a good mix up is a good way. Also: the rods in the Adios Pro 3 tend to break after like 400+miles, then you have an even better training shoe :P There was a review about the Pro 3 after 1000km, the rods fell apart, but the outsole was stilling going and the shoe felt still great. Thank you for your work
I ran 2:57:50 in my first marathon attempt at age 42. I did similar long runs with "marathon pace" in them. My target pace for the faster sections of the long runs was 6:35 with non plated shoes. I think your training marathon pace miles need to be 10-15 seconds faster than what your actual marathon would be. If your thinking of 2:50 as a goal time your training marathon pace should be in the 6:15 per mile range.
@@mattheworr7059 An example of an 18 mile long run that I did was. 8 mile warm up at 8:30 per mile easy pace. 1 mile faster than target marathon pace at 6:35 per mile, then a cool down mile that would usually be at 7:45 per mile pace. Then repeat the faster/slower miles until you get to the desired distance. To increase difficulty I would do 2 or even 3 miles in a row at 6:35 pace then just one slow mile. I was able to run sub 3 in my very first marathon pretty comfortably doing this in my long runs.
LOVE IT! LFG! Thx for PX update. I think a little over 800 has still been the max (I’m on my fourth pair of v1s)…and the heel collar/lockdown just gets stretched and sloppy.
I'd shoot for a 2hr 55min marathon (average pace 6min 41sec). That way you have a bitnofna buffer for the sub three but if you're feeling great but the last couple of miles you can turn it on and finished sub 2:55. Considering the travel and possible weather I'd rather just stick to the main goal which is sub three. Get that monkey off your back then worry bout PRs after that. Hate to see this turn into a sisyphean vlog like Casey Neistats (although that was a dope ass video).

Awesome to see your fitness improving. In terms of target time, I wouldn't be too greedy. The 23sec per mile between 6:29 and 6:52 paces to run a 2h50 or a 3h00 is not a lot of margin over 26.2 miles. I would be aiming for 6:40 (2h54) for 20miles and hope to stay under 6:50 for the last 6miles. When is the race?
BEING A TEXAS RESIDENT MYSELF I CAN SAY SUMMERS ARE BRUTAL..AND WE PUT IN WORK..MUCH PROPS TO TEXAS RUNNAS 👏 🙌 😎 ❤MY HOTTEST RUN OF SUMMER WAS 105° 60% HUMIDITY 10K LAST WEEK..UGH
Great training , I look forward to following your training .. out of intrest are you about the end goal. or are you more of a 'its all about the journey' guy?
The journey for sure. That's why I am NOT so methodical about making sure I check off all the boxes - 3:10, 3:05, 3:00, 2:55, 2:50 etc... I missed a sub 3 by 2 minutes and 24 seconds. I had a blast. I got fitter. And I don't really see the point of running pretty hard and securing a 3:00. If I race, I feel like I should go for it. If I miss 2:50 by the same time, it's still a success. Where I would really like to elevate to is a better mental balance with running. Like, I don't have to even run or arrive anywhere to be happy where I am with family and be filled with gratitude.
Hey midlife great run! I was gonna ask you I know you said I should stick low heart rate 130-140bmi and more mileage. Do u think running 4-5 times week is enough including long run? I feel like when I try run more than 4-5 times week my body starts breaking down and I feel like 4 to 5 is best u think that’s enough? Should I include 1 short tempo speed day?
@supertreybo - 1) I’m not a coach so take the following with a grain of salt. 2) If you’re pushing your body up to the point where you feel the bolts are shaking but you’re not getting injured 💪🏼 then you’re in a great spot. 3) if your improvement has plateaued then I would mix in some speed. I would reduce mileage just a bit to make room for the added stress of speed. 6-8 weeks and see if the fitness is improving
Absolutely forget about youtube and anyone else, we literally don't matter in the long run! What matters is the work you put in and the goals you (eventually) set for yourself. If it was me and I put in all this work and sweat equity ( and multiple attempts), I'd cruise at 6:43 (so there's room to spare for a long course or a little struggle) and IF you hit mile 23 and feel too good to be true, throw the hammer down and take an additional couple minutes off.
Good thinking . Most of the elevation is in the first 15k so I’m going to have to respect the first half and “take it easy “ or “take it in stride” anyway
Nice work. You look & sound strong (I listen to foot strikes). Extra Kudos for carrying a gimbal/phone the whole way? When I run in this weather I need a headband or 1 sweatband on one wrist to wipe the sweat off my brow & from my eyes - not sure I saw you do that a single time - do you?
I do a band in the winter to keep warm to start a run and pocket it later. But in the spring/summer? You know, I am not sure I really do and I don’t know why because I’m drenched. I have to bring a towel to put on the car seat. My family avoids me from the doorway to the shower and the clothes immediately go into the dryer. On my long run Sunday, I stopped at mile 2 to re-tie my laces and as I looked down sweat fell from my nose already. Interesting …
You mentioned the Rock n Roll in San Antonio. Are you running it? I’m thinking of going to run the full with my daughter and son in law who are running the half.
Awesome, Joe! I ran the half last year. I am running the Austin international half mid January so I may sign up for the half or maybe a 10k or 5k if they offer it
Set the time goal the day/week before the marathon. Why set an arbitrary goal when you don’t know if you’ll do the work sufficiently in training to run at that pace?
Well, to be fair, if I set a goal for 2:50 then I know the training workload is set much higher than a 3. And if I can’t hit that training load, I can always adjust the goal. I think the most important thing is to pick a goal that reflect fitness potential. Like, running a 5k and see what is capable for a marathon via VDOT and aiming for that
