Hi Jane, thank you for the video…. Longtime Marathoner here…. From 1983 to 2017. 2017 was my last because I absolutely destroyed my feet after I finished and suffered w/sever platter fasciitis for years. Totally my fault, ran in broke down shoes…. My question is how do I begin again? I cannot begin to tell you the mental tool it had on me, running was my life…. And still does. The depression of not being able to run…. It was my outlet for all things stressful in my life……. I just decided that in order to get over it, I need to get through it! So…. I need to start over again like back in 1983 only with a MUCH older body…. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Ps, I’m 65 years old.
I ran my first marathon at 64 years old. I wasn’t concerned with time or anything, didn’t have a watch or a fancy plan. I looked at a couple plans online and kinda followed them in principle. I did great, 4:30 plus something, but I talked to people and stuff. One thing I read was to smile, physically smile, and to have fun. I did and I loved it. I’m 70 now and I’m gonna run another one in about a week and a couple days, planning to get Boston qualifying time. I’m doing about the same, except I’ve learned to fuel, (honey), and I’m resting lots more. I used to run everyday, 10 miles, I mix it up now, cross training, swimming and biking. I’ve done a couple half Ironman distances. For me, I need to remember why I’m doing this, because I enjoy it. Gotta have fun, I don’t have to make some time, nobody cares. Smile and have fun.
Hey John - I agree with the smiling!! Did this at my marathon this weekend and it helps so much! And yes, if it's not fun what's the point? Good luck on clinching that BQ...which marathon are you doing?
Thanks. Congrats on the marathon. I’m in Sinaloa, Mexico and plane to run the Culiacán marathon this Sunday. I need to remember to not be so competitive and to prioritize having fun.
Thanks for your help I am planning to do my first marathon just started running after 32 years. Having fun know i m 54 years old I know I m on right track after reading your story. Smile and keep running 🏃♂️

Great video! I’m currently training to run my first marathon in January. I’m a quarter of the way through my training plan and I know that things will get tougher physically and mentally over the next few months. Fortunately my only goal is to finish the race so not having the added pressure of reaching a time goal will help me with the process. 😁

Thank you for the motivation and wisdom! I definitely don’t feel like quitting but I can relate to much of what you said. Since this is my first marathon, I will be happy to just finish but I am glad to know I would do better the more I do this.
Absolutely! Every marathon and training block is an opportunity to learn and improve. Just popped into your training log and you are rocking it, Joanne!!! So so proud of you and all of your hard work. You're doing it!!
I made that first mistake... injuries from starting too fast because I could and was over confident.. now I am trying to fix this mistake and hoping for the best ...! It's so tough because I follow running influencers and I swear all of them are doing so much
It's all a learning process. You don't know til you know sometimes and then you learn for next time. Hopefully you're seeing a PT or someone who can help get you back out there soon! Also, don't get caught up in what others are doing...most running influencers you probably follow have been running for many years and are experienced marathon runners. But I know it's so hard not to compare. Best of luck to you, Mindy!
Judging real life to influencer media is a MISTAKE. No matter how flashy they are compared to me in their new sponsored shoes. Doesn’t mean I won’t stomp them unto pain life with my thrift store trainers
Great video, Jane!🤓 All great and very true points! Patience is definitely a very key thing for me in marathon training. Having the long term patience to keep building towards the race with each day of the training block, realizing there will be good days and bad days and just trying to stay present and not get too far ahead of myself. Then to have the patience during the marathon to stay within myself, trust my training and realize that no matter what I have done, there is going to be pain, going to be struggle. But then, this is part of the beauty of why I do marathons, as you mentioned, if only 1/2 of a % of the world's population has done a marathon, it is a special achievement to push one's body and mind through the preparation and completion of 26.2 miles! Thanks for the excellent video and I hope your training is going well! Cheers, Scott
Hi Scott - great to hear from you! Absolutely, every marathon training and finish is one to be celebrated! It's a ton of work and so worth it when you stick it out. What are you up to training for these days?
@@runningwithjane Hi Jane, I'm currently training to do a virtual marathon in Oct/Nov, my training is still pretty consistent although our summer is pretty hot, so my pace is quite a bit slower. But I'm getting it done, which is what matters! I also started some great strength/cross training as a 24 hr Anytime Fitness gym just opened less than 10 minutes walk from my house! So I'm excited to see how that helps as my virtual marathon rolls around when the weather will be much cooler! Do you plan on doing Boston next year also? Hope all is well with you, your family and your training! Cheers, Scott
Great list, just subscribed to your channel. I'm deep into a 4mo plan for a mid October marathon (it'll be my first, and almost coincide with my 41st birthday). Already missed 10 days of training this month because of Covid, but have mostly caught up, I think. We'll see!
So sorry to hear Covid put you down for a bit - one of the athletes I coach was in your same boat. She bounced back quickly and it sounds like you are, too. Frustrating when those uncontrollables get in the way, but that's life, and it's all part of the process of adapting and getting stronger over time. I hope the rest of training goes smoothly for you!
This was very informative. Grappling with the hard truths on an internal level is way harder than the external measurements and goals. I have subscribed to this channel. Thank you! 🙏
I'm a novice/intermediate runner, and the furthest I've raced is 10k. I'm about to start marathon training (20 weeks.) I set my heart on a marathon - I have ADHD and I've found the best way to keep me motivated is to set a really ambitious, exciting goal then prepare and train like crazy! This is really helpful, thank you so much!
(I have a huge why - recovering after 6 years of mental health struggles, bereavement, and just not living my life. Finally getting an ADHD diagnosis and starting running has quite literally saved my life. So this is my huge goal, my reward, my proof to myself anf the world that I CAN achieve incredible things!)
Yes!! I am so happy to hear you found running and that you have set an ambitious goal that you are excited about! I hope the channel helps you as you move through marathon training. Wishing you best of luck!
@Running With Jane thank you so much! I'm nervous but I know I can do this. Really happy I found this channel, so helpful and encouraging 🥰 This video is great for beginners who might not realise that ups and downs are a normal part of the process, and it doesn't mean you're going to fail :)
I'm using your beginner marathon training plan for my first marathon, Chicago 2022! 8 weeks away from race day! I'm now entering mileage I've never done before. I'm nervous but very excited!
Hi Julia! This makes me so happy to hear! So proud of you for getting into those big weeks. Keep prioritizing proper rest and quality nutrition making sure you're getting enough fuel as the miles build. Keep going - 8 weeks will be here before you know it!
I started running in 2017 with 5km runs. Today i have run 7 marathons and 3 Comrades marathons which is a 87km race its the worlds biggest ultra marathon ❤
Ran just the half marathon. Did pretty good for first one. It was humbling because so many people passed me up, but so many people I was ahead of at the same time. What helped me with my muslce soreness was my techniques from massage therapy school. Not sure should I do for the full marathon later. But the 13.1 run was really fun.
Congrats on your first half marathon! That's a big deal. No need to do full marathons if you don't want to...or perhaps someday you will want to. But the half is a fun distance!
just completed my first half marathon this past weekend. now i do like to put a marathon as a goal on the horizon. however i rather train properly for one vs just entering and finishing one for the sake of doing a marathon. just now is the case of where to start on training
Ah so fun! It's a great feeling when you get the bug and are ready for the next challenge. Here is a link to a video that talks about a free marathon training plan I have if you want to start there: th-cam.com/video/9ojMGaJhWmA/w-d-xo.html
I am starting a training plan to run my very first marathon. I have done 2 half marathons and improved my time by 6 mins but that I believe was more mental in knowing what to expect and having a better frame of mind for it. I have found a 52 week beginner's training plan to go by and I am sure I will encounter everything you mentioned in this video. I am actually looking forward to completing this goal but training through the 4 seasons is my worry, running in the cold weather as well as the scorching heat. Bring on the fun.
Hi Dan - that's great that you are preparing yourself well in advance for your first marathon. Just make sure you build in a bit of a rest break (a week of little to no running or at least not following a strict schedule) each quarter so that you don't get burnt out. Strength training alongside the running will also be important to stay injury-free.
@@runningwithjane thank you for the advice. Like yourself i go to Orangetheory too. I use to go 5 times a week but during my training i am going to go once maybe twice a week and instead of running on the treadmill, i may switch to the bike at times. Your videos have helped me understand what is ahead and cannot wait.
Just always remember your WHY because you are asking yourself and your body to do something a very small percentage of the population will ever try. When you reach what we call The Pain Cave, embrace it. This makes you Awesome !
6 weeks left till my 4th stand alone marathon (Ironman's don't count), I'm attempting to BQ and going into this race with a 5 minute deficit your comments on goal/speed expectations are appropriate, if I don't get there this time I will next - I know I can, I just need to continue the build/journey!!
100% Paul!! Running time goals definitely don't need to have fixed end dates...you can keep progressing and building your potential. What marathon are you running?
I will be running my first marathon in October this year a week before i hit 65. Have run plenty of half marathons in the last few years in the 1.31 - 1.35 range based purely on training for Ironman 70.3s. My run mileage when training for triathlons was 40 - 50 kilometers a week, with lots of swimming and cycling, however i have decided to cut out most of the bike/swim training and just concentrate on running. Have now been running 80 kilometers a week for the last 6 weeks mostly 80/20 and plan on hitting 100 kilometers a month before the marathon. Am curious what effect being now a pure runner will have on my run form. My run legs definitely feel better after cutting out cycling.Hopefully i will find out come October if cycling has been detrimental for my running! I have not landed on a goal time yet but thought i would test myself and run a half marathon in zone 3.
I don't think that cycling has negatively impacted your running form. Just likely you are becoming more efficient as you run more. Could you have been running more on tired legs when you had the other modalities and felt that? For sure. Wishing you best of luck in your marathon in October!
When I saw the "you've been warned", I thought you were going to talk about the bad The Warning (this is their slogan!), but of course, I stayed for the running stuff which is why I'm here. Still really fun to see this phrase! 😃
Hi Jane, I am a 32 year old woman in my last month of marathon training and I need advice. I've been active in a wide variety of activities my whole life, but over the last couple of years, I've really focused on improving my running. I am a "normal" weight by bmi but I had some health issues in the spring that led to me gaining 10lbs. When I began my marathon training program, I figured it would help with dropping the weight. Months later and not only have I not lost any, I have actually gained another 2lbs this past week, just after my longest (20mi) run. It affects my performance and motivation. With only a month to go, is there anything realistic I can do to feel better on race day? I'm nervous so late in the game to make any big changes, but obviously something isn't working. Or maybe I need to accept this is how my body will be on race day and just focus on what I can do differently afterwards. Thanks for the great content and honest insights!
Hi there! TBH, weight gain in marathon training is actually not that abnormal. Sometimes this stems from thinking we can eat all the things because we're running all the miles, but at other times that's not the case at all. I'm sorry that it's affecting your performance and motivation - I would really encourage you to ditch the scale for at least the next month. Try to eat intuitively and listen to your body and give it what it's telling you it needs. Definitely not a good time to try to lose weight. And lady, you just ran 20 miles and you should be damn proud of what that body is allowing you to do!!! Post marathon, I'd encourage you to work with a nutritionist - there are many who work specifically with runners and I could give you a few names. Enjoy your last month of marathon training and just go out and do your best!
@@runningwithjane I really appreciate your response, especially the reminder of putting into perspective what my body has already accomplished. I'll focus on your advice to stay the course through the training and race and then look into making changes afterwards. Thanks!
I get that - it's definitely nerve wracking going into it. But many things worth doing leave you with those emotions. Wishing you best of luck on your training and your race - you can do it!!
I’m two weeks out today and was feeling really tired 4 weeks out. Did my longest ever run 3 weeks out and was feeling over the moon and ready to taper. Then today I woke up with awful food poisoning :( thankfully tomorrow is a holiday where I live so I will be able to make up my long run then. I’m feeling better and am carb loading with rice and bread for my tummy and rehydrating like crazy.
Oh yuck, I'm so sorry to hear this! Well, if it makes you feel better, I got an awful stomach bug 5 days before the Boston Marathon and I thought it was going to do me in, but it was still a great race. Hope you feel well enough for your long run, but don't overdo it. You're almost there and the hay is in the barn!!
Love your channel! I have a few questions. Im about 3 weeks into a 16 week garmin marathon training plan. I decided to run a marathon thats a month later then my original date so i would have more time to train. Do i just keep doing the plan then start it over 16 weeks out? Can i do a week twice to fill in the week and half? What would work best? Also how would i know if a sub 4 hour time is doable with my current fitness level?
Hey Aaron, nothing at all wrong with doing a week two times in a row! You'll be that much stronger for it all and more used to the mileage as it comes. Here's a video to help with that last question: th-cam.com/video/aXu4jA-SJsM/w-d-xo.html
I comment on almost EVERY post because it helps the logarithm . . . I just want to do a 10K trail run at before I hit 70 years old (in 2-1/2 years) but I also want to keep doing 500 mile backpack trips. So I guess that's a time goal haha Just finish in the middle of my age category in the next two years.
I had to stop marathon prep, it was killing me physically and mentaly, I have a physically demanding job, it really felt like I was doing too much, I was killing myself
I'm so sorry to hear that, Kevin. Sometimes it's just not the right time. I hope in the future, perhaps at a more settled time, you'll be able to fit it in if it's something that's important to you. All the best!
Good facts regarding tackling the marathon. Be careful if you’re OCD because you could wind up chasing Boston, and then the majors medal. 😂 Marathoning is the best. 👍🏼
I have been training since March 2023 . I have been taking my rest days and also I have seen significant weight loss 10 pounds to be exact . I feel more energetic and I am able to sleep better. I have been accepted for the 2023 nyc marathon. Like you say I keep training as prescribed so I can feel comfortable running the marathon. I need more help into what month should I start tapering my training.
All i can say about the training ,Hard to train because of my work schedule i get home 6:30 pm know gets close to dark 7 pm ,my Alternate is go on my peloton like i use for training in a marathon is that acceptable training
Peloton treadmill do you mean? If so, then yes! Treadmill is fine! If Peloton bike, you don't want to replace your necessary runs with that but can be great XT. Can you go out in the morning?
I’m less than 30days from my first full marathon and I’m struggling. I did my longest (17mi ) and felt solid the next day . Then I couldn’t move the next week ! It turns out I’m supposed to be tapering anyway! If I don’t succeed, it be because I’m out of shape , it will be mental
Keep up with your taper runs and then fill the rest of the time with something else you enjoy. Focus on planning for the big day. Also make sure you are running your long runs at an easy enough pace, fatigue at this point is VERY normal, but you also shouldn't feel like you can't complete your weekly mileage. You're almost there. Believe in yourself, David...you got this!
So I have been training for two years, strength training. My cardio was always abysmal. I couldn’t run a mile, and at first I struggled to even slow jog at 5 MPH for a tenth of a mile. Now if I PUSH I can get a mile in about 8 minutes, but that’s IT. I have run a bunch of 5K’s, I do one every Sunday now, and I have never gotten below 30 minutes and right now I’m averaging 31-33 minutes HARD effort and I’m falling over afterwards. I keep seeing videos talking about people maintaining an 8 minute mile pace for hours and I can barely do it for 8 minutes. This is the most frustrated I’ve ever been since beginning my training. I get that my focus was always strength and I didn’t work on cardio as much but HOW is it possible I can still have cardio this far below normal levels after all this time?
Without having more info, the thing that stands out to me is that you are trying to best your 5k time every weekend. You likely need a bigger base...higher volume of miles/kms logged. Most of this should be at an easy pace. Focus on building up time on feet for 6 weeks and then try racing that 5k again.
@@runningwithjane Even though the logical side of me understands this concept, the emotional side of me is like "you are exhausted and missing paces, how are you going to complete this 50K coming up?"
Yeah im at the point were my legs are feeling fatigued when i know i can do it. Then i got a really long run two days later likke is this even right. I just don't want to be burnt out for race day
I want to give myself a minimum of 12 months to prepare, starting with long walks first, because I'm a complete beginner and I've never ran a day in my life. Is that okay?
Yes, that's a perfect way to start! You might find this video helpful with complementary 8-month "from scratch" marathon plan: th-cam.com/video/T9PfLfThUgg/w-d-xo.html
The first part where you said you question everything made me start laughing and have to press pause. I'm training for my 2nd marathon, and all the questions are there again.

@@runningwithjane CIM in December!
@@stephaniec1720 love that race and hope you have an amazing experience!
@@runscottyrun5297 so wonderful to be able to walk to the gym!! Planning for Boston at this point, yes!
Nicely put, great advice. Rest between marathon training cycles to avoid injury, and repeat! That BQ might take a few cycles...
Agreed. People want it right now, but the body doesn't work that way.
This was very informative. Grappling with the hard truths on an internal level is way harder than the external measurements and goals. I have subscribed to this channel. Thank you! 🙏
Agreed! It's not easy that's for sure.
Thank you so much for this video
You're very welcome!
How was it?
I started running in 2017 with 5km runs. Today i have run 7 marathons and 3 Comrades marathons which is a 87km race its the worlds biggest ultra marathon ❤
So awesome!! Starts with a single step - it's amazing what the human body can do.
Great advice.. Quality video 🤙🏼
Thanks for watching, Shane!
just completed my first half marathon this past weekend. now i do like to put a marathon as a goal on the horizon. however i rather train properly for one vs just entering and finishing one for the sake of doing a marathon. just now is the case of where to start on training
You absolutely have to!! And yes, it makes you VERY awesome!
@@runningwithjane I'm doing Mesa in Arizona Feb 4th, and recently found out I got into London (my fourth WM Star) April 23rd....
To do a marathon is hard and painful. i will run my first marathon soon and I totally agree with you.
Wishing you best of luck, Karen!
Hi - not familiar! Either way, glad it got you to watch and stick around haha.
Thanks!
Im not particularly excited, but its also easier for me in some sense. Im 64, my only goal is to finish one.
@@runningwithjane really helpful to hear that this happens to other people! Thanks for your encouraging words :)
You can do it!
Awesome advice
Glad you found it helpful, Noah!
@@runningwithjane but I have't lost my love for running
Good facts regarding tackling the marathon. Be careful if you’re OCD because you could wind up chasing Boston, and then the majors medal. 😂 Marathoning is the best. 👍🏼
LOL I'm not OCD but fully get that! I just REALLY LOVE the marathon.

3 week taper is usually best for first-time marathoners!
Love that you are feeling great in training, Oscar!
@@runningwithjanethank you
All i can say about the training ,Hard to train because of my work schedule i get home 6:30 pm know gets close to dark 7 pm ,my Alternate is go on my peloton like i use for training in a marathon is that acceptable training
Peloton treadmill do you mean? If so, then yes! Treadmill is fine! If Peloton bike, you don't want to replace your necessary runs with that but can be great XT. Can you go out in the morning?
Ooo this video has a steady tone sound happening in the background. Good content regardless.
Glad the content was helpful. Yeah, I'm not sure that was happening at that time.
Very good advice!!!
Thanks for watching, Jeff!
I appreciate the advice.
You're so welcome!
Right on Jane
You're out there doing it!! Proud of you!
The concept of cumulative fatigue is a struggle for many of us.
For sure! Tough to determine what is normal and what's not!
@@runningwithjane Even though the logical side of me understands this concept, the emotional side of me is like "you are exhausted and missing paces, how are you going to complete this 50K coming up?"
@@Freight_Train_Running Yes! Such a normal thought process. I always remind everyone they will be fully tapered come race day!
After committing to Wim Hof I no longer have cumulative fatigue
Can you share where you got the tank top?
Hi Kristin, it's from Senita! Their clothes are fantastic quality AND affordable! Here's 15% off: tinyurl.com/yp9bw7wv It's called the Motivate tank.
Yeah im at the point were my legs are feeling fatigued when i know i can do it. Then i got a really long run two days later likke is this even right. I just don't want to be burnt out for race day
That sounds like marathon training to me!! Make sure you have a good taper and you should be feeling fresh for race day!
