This was an interesting review for me. I used to own a '16 EcoBoost Mustang (6sp Manual), and now own a '23 BRZ (6sp Manual). The Mustang was amazing on road trips. Easy to get 30-32mpg, it had very little road noise, TONS of room. And it had plenty of power to be fun. The mid range torque on the 2.3 is great. The shifter on the Mustang was pretty sub-par and often did not want to quickly shift. But was still better than an auto from a fun perspective. The BRZ/86 on the other hand, gets pretty poor fuel economy for what it is. I can get 28-30 on the HWY. It has lots of road noise (I did a full sound deadening install on mine which helped a lot). The trunk is big enough to be useful, but is easily half the size of the Mustang's. The power is good for its weight, and is enough to make the car fun. Its a HUGE improvement over the previous generation BRZ/86. Mine has the STI short throw shifter, which is fantastic. One of the best shifters I have used outside of something like an S2000. I did install an HKS exhaust, and unplugged the engine noise generator. MUCH better sound experience now. Overall, the BRZ is a much more fun car to drive through the canyons, and for driving around town. The Mustang is a much better grand tourer for road trips and the like.

Got my 2024 mustang ecoboost last November 2023 on sale for 26k plus. A lot cheaper than the competition that I test drove. Love the technology, features, the looks, my wife and my son can fit at the back (5’5), sound of the twin scroll turbo, 33 mpg high way sometimes more and enough power (310hp). 26k was a bargain
got a 2017 mustang EcoBoost premium, (32k msrp) got 23k OTD, as it was a 2 year leftover, put 50k miles on it and sold it for like 30k during covid. I really enjoyed it, put ford performance tune on it, ripped. But I just bought 24 gr86 as it's a summer commuter, really enjoying it. smaller car, just feels great. honestly I dont miss my mustang.
An unexpected but very relevant comparison by someone who has owned both. This is fantastic! Personally I like the idea of simplicity since I think it ages better, so 86 for me (assuming they don't have that oil starvation issue anymore). I hope they keep iterating into a next generation.
These two cars are literally what I’m having trouble deciding to get, I might go with an Ecoboost just because I’m quite tall( 6’3 with longer legs), so I feel like the Mustang would fit me more comfortably
Test drive them. Only problem I could see GR86 is how low you are getting in and out. It’s actually really roomy and a bit easier getting in and out with the seat all the way back. You will have plenty of room in the gr86 though.
I purchased a 22 ecoboost manual and was considering the brz. I’m very happy with my decision honestly. It’s a decently fast car. The clutch is a bit floaty at times but wouldnt trade for an auto
You made the correct choice, Matt. Wish the younger generation would look at pure, driving pleasure, and less at the numbers. Unless you track your, car, they don't matter.
Just a small correction, the port injection is cleaning off the back of the intake valves. The direct injectors are inside the combustion chamber so they’re already getting washed in fuel and fire without dual injection setups. Great video though!
Nice comparison! I have a 2022 BRZ and I will say that it is the most fun car to drive on the road and on the track! The Mustang seems great with more power but the lack of a manual kills the deal for me.
I got a 2016 Ecoboost new, and I’ve enjoyed it a lot. This comparison is very relevant, as I was making this exact decision about 8 years ago. Back then, the Ecoboost felt like a lot more bang for the buck, especially for a daily you had to live with for everything. It’s been a great commuter and a lot of fun on the occasional back road. That said, looking at the current versions I’d go with the GR86. The Mustang is just too expensive! I’ve also grown to dislike how numb the steering is. Toyota also finally gave the GR86 enough tech to make it more livable. Perhaps it’s just that I’ve done the Ecoboost thing, but my vote in 2024 is the GR86!
A perfectly maintained Ford Ecoboost 4 vs a perfectly maintained Subaru flat 4…I’d pick the Ford as the one most likely to remain sound once the mileage gets high.
As everyone else has said great idea comparing 2 similar cars! You should see if you can do that more often with the Harrison Auto Sales cars even if they’re more mainstream like a couple year old CRV RAV and Rogue or compare a RAV to an Equinox or something, compare the best sellers from each country in each vehicle segment type thing
The choice really comes down to how much room do you need and how many twisty roads in your area. I’m in driving heaven in my 22 BRZ. Unable to afford a Porsche I’m overjoyed with sub 3000 lbs 200+ hp. It’s so much fun and ride is comfortable for what the car is.
i finally saw one of these mustangs in person. they look a lot bigger than the s550 even though it shouldnt be. styling isnt as nice too. the plastic by the rear bumper is a bit much. maybe if i see a dark horse in person ill change my mind. id pick the gr unless it's a GT with a manual.
I don’t mind a 4-Cyl Mustang… I hate that people dismiss it because it’s associated with “Muscle Car”. I’m sure if ford changed it up a little and slapped a different badge that those said people would be praising it. Aside from that. It’s an amazing car, it looks great. The only thing that kills it for me is the lack of a Manual Transmission. I’m sure if they had a manual transmission in the line up that it would sell well.
Good information, but I can’t, in good conscience, consider a 4 cylinder Mustang. I’d just get a pre-owned V8 GT, which, funny enough, gives you comparable fuel mileage to the thirsty GR86/BRZ twins from what I’ve seen.
Shit take. This 4 cylinder mustang is faster and has more HP than a V8 mustang from 10 years ago. So what’s your point? Not everyone needs close to 500 HP that current GTs have.
I think I’d take GR86 honestly, I’d feel like a punk in an auto four cylinder mustang 😂 I am a huge fan of the s650 styling though, both beautiful cars! Great video !
We've planned on my 15yo son taking my WRX when it's time, but he's been asking about the BRZ recently. Videos like this help rule out (or rule in) other options. Thanks for the help Matt.
when has living in a more crowded area an issue with the size of a car? c'mon matt. simply put, the Gr86 is a lot more nimble and feels a little more like a sports car. the mustang is a bigger heavier car with a lot more power grand touring car. you cant lose either way.
The pistons in the mustang are actually oval instead of round kind of wild. I have a question for you. How much do you think the ford performance track suspension could maje a difference with the cornering? Just curious because you have recent memory in driving it.
The Ecoboost 0-60 times are quite varied. I saw the initial 4.5s when the car released. But now I check different places and I'm seeing 4.8, 4.9, 5.6. Looks like it's a all over the place.
I think what the comparison between the 2 cars really comes down to is where the money is spent with each car. The 86/brz is a car which cost is split between subaru and toyota on specifically the engine & platform between 2 companies while ford is tackling the same market alone. With that said, the 86/brz is by far better in its engine, drivetrain, & platform over the more daily practicality of the mustang at that price point in performance. The mustang is more geared toward a customer who wants a daily with an interior thats accommodating closer to what german cars can offer at a reasonable price point when it comes to power and practicality. But many of the issues with the 86/brz can be solved aftermarket with hardwork + $$. It really comes down to how much are you will to work with your car after you own it? I bought my own 86 recently and am currently looking into sound dampening the interior and possibly adding a turbo after watching those who did over a course of time to gauge reliability. But that isn't for everyone. Some people just want a stock car to daily. But if you're willing to put effort into ur car to make it built just for you, 86/brz all the way. Only issue is that this won't be a $30k car anymore. It just comes down to how you'd like to spend your money on a car you'd call a daily. If you are a performance enthusiast, custom car shop, some rich dude with 10 cars, etc. this does not apply to you. Without money being a factor, the car can be exactly what you want and thats not the point. Ofc you can keep the 86 stock and it is still a great car but for practicality, the mustang will win. I hope this helps for those not only considering between the mustang and the 86/brz but just considering the 86/brz in general. FYI the 86/brz's manual transmission is geared aggressively on the lower end. It will punch through gears very quickly up to 60 where you live in 6th gear. At 70 mph, I am at 3k RPMs while at 80mph, I am nearly at 4k RPMs. Its def enough for highway but not practical as coming from a 2013 535i which would live at 2k rpms at 80 mph in 7th gear out of 8. The mustang is a 10 speed transmission and will be much better for city and highway driving if "transmission learning your drive habits" is correct. FYII have a coworker with a 2018 fiesta? eco-boost getting their engine rebuilt by dealer and is currently looking to sell ASAP after rebuild because of reliability issues with eco-boost. I never had mopar so I dont have further comment but I hope it helps.
I'm a GR86 owner, so I am biased. I was wondering the MPG of the Mustang. I've been playing around with my GR86, as well as a lot of highway miles. I'm currently at 27ish MPG.
You know what you could do? Is occasional drag races/ dyno pulls. That might bring in the viewers. Especially if you dyno each new sports or performance car.
@@MattMaranMotoring Maybe start with a one or two cars here and there. How much power does the new eco boost put down? And see if it does well or not, and worth making more time for or not. Next time you get a new hot sport car or hatch to review.
I rented an ecoboost and was impressed with the power. It's plenty, but the transmission is terrible. Lazy in normal mode or very jerky in sport mode. Almost like being in a manual car with someone who can't drive manual. It would be a deal breaker for me.
But in it's class I doubt anything can touch it. 4.5 0-60 is great. But it can't perform on the top end. Good car for everyday use. I need top end, I'd bust out the 69 Impala SS 427.
Toyota and Subaru should have used the 2.4 litre right from the start. I like that the Mustang has a longitudinal 4 in a large hood. Much easier to do your own maintenance. On the 86 just changing a set of spark plugs is tedious work.
If it has to be new, get the base no option Ecoboost and pay like 5 grand to have it manual swapped at a shop that can do it. If used? Get a used GT for the price of an Ecoboost. No matter what you pick, do a steering swap and put in a manual rack.
I'd take the GR86 - Boxer 4, lighter, shorter wheelbase, and... it's a Toyota. Great idea for a vid, Matt! Hopefully this appeals to the algorithm gods and gets tons of views. :)
Not really a fan of this class but never owned a porny car and I’ve always wanted a Stang so I’d get it. Plus like the bigger size and tires are bigger which I like.
Keep in mind that majority of people just drive in a straight line and for that purpose, the Ecoboost Mustang is a lot more fun. Plus in my area, you can get 5k off MSRP on a new Mustang Ecoboost and pay 3k over MSRP for a new GR86. So the Ecoboost is cheaper!
@@johnkonde1975 I got a GR86 Premium manual in red with the performance package. Exactly what I wanted. I paid MSRP. I've owned 2 Mustangs, red, of course. Turning is fun.
Both are 4 cylinder rear wheel drive two plus two sport coupes. So why does my brain refuse to consider them comparable? I think GR 86 alternative, the first thing that comes to mind is Miata. A two passenger convertible. Maybe it’s like boxing, weight classes.
I used to own 1st gen BRZ and currently own S550 Mach 1. GR86/BRZ are great cars but the engine has no soul, but if you get the Mustang then you need the V8 for sure. I think the new S650 looks terrible while the new GR86 is a great improvement over 1st gen. The dumb screens on the S650 are another weak point. My advice is to get used S550 GT or Mach 1.
I owned a 2022 BRZ MT and now I drive a 2024 Mustang GT MT, I understand that the one review is an eco boost but comparing a Brz to a mustang is just unfair the Brz handling is increadible but past that it's pretty much mustang all the way.
Well simply put gr86/brz is perfect driver's car. Easily the best car you could learn to drive better & especially learn racing skills too. Best beginner car ever. The only true upgrade to it would be a type r. Mustang ecoboost is a daily comfy coupe/grantourer. Totally different cars imo. Infact i would rather get the type r vs gt mustang.

I know the 10 speed is faster, but I do wish the Mustang still came with the 6r80 as an option
I'm a GR86 owner, so I am biased. I was wondering the MPG of the Mustang. I've been playing around with my GR86, as well as a lot of highway miles. I'm currently at 27ish MPG.
Great video
Thanks!
You know what you could do? Is occasional drag races/ dyno pulls. That might bring in the viewers. Especially if you dyno each new sports or performance car.
It's a fun idea if I had the time, unfortunately I don't.
@@MattMaranMotoring Maybe start with a one or two cars here and there. How much power does the new eco boost put down? And see if it does well or not, and worth making more time for or not.
Next time you get a new hot sport car or hatch to review.
This should be a revenue generator for you 👍
Ever since you mentioned an 86/brz is one of the cars you thought of taking over the bullitt I think I know what your answer is here.. I hope 😊
I rented an ecoboost and was impressed with the power. It's plenty, but the transmission is terrible. Lazy in normal mode or very jerky in sport mode. Almost like being in a manual car with someone who can't drive manual. It would be a deal breaker for me.
super great video
Thank you! Cheers!
86: The backend doesn't play around at those speeds, when you're not even accelerating out of the corner.
I'd go 86, so much fun.
Til u want to go faster than the ecoboost for the win 😂
@@cormaro13 you aren’t buying an ecoboost to race, it’s like driving a couch
Thanks!
Not really a fan of this class but never owned a porny car and I’ve always wanted a Stang so I’d get it. Plus like the bigger size and tires are bigger which I like.
I got a 22' ecoboost and love it! super fun car. And pretty spacious for the driver, i feel like the 86 is a tighter squeeze
Being a Mustang lover, i prefer the GR86 more.
I'd say if you prefer a manual transmission, gr86/brz. If automatic, mustang.
I’d go with the GR86
Keep in mind that majority of people just drive in a straight line and for that purpose, the Ecoboost Mustang is a lot more fun. Plus in my area, you can get 5k off MSRP on a new Mustang Ecoboost and pay 3k over MSRP for a new GR86. So the Ecoboost is cheaper!
@@johnkonde1975 you might as well just buy an ev if you're going to make straight line statement lol
@@johnkonde1975 I got a GR86 Premium manual in red with the performance package. Exactly what I wanted. I paid MSRP. I've owned 2 Mustangs, red, of course. Turning is fun.
@@johnkonde1975what area or state is that?

I thought the 2024 86 had wireless car play and the generation before was the wired one
I love mustangs, but the 86 is too much fun
These two cars really shouldn't be compared. They both have unique characteristics, but the Mustang is a decidedly American car.
Mustang is 11 inches longer but it definitely looks like more because of its shape
None of these are actually affordable, but I'd take mustang over 86
Both are 4 cylinder rear wheel drive two plus two sport coupes.
The Ecoboost will put down faster lap times, in case anyone was curious
Can’t remember the last time I saw anyone over 30 driving a GR86.
I had one at 52
I can...because it's me.
I have a 2024 gr86 at 37 it’s fun and a nice car
@Filterfinder new ones seem much nicer I had 2013, version for 2 years, started to hate the slow fukin thing, and just had to get rid of it.
I'm 42 and I been wanting a GR86 myself
Toyota for me
The Ecoboost front facia is a lot nicer than the GT imo. I wonder how expensive the bumper is from Ford so that I can swap it.😂
Someone delusional about that 😂 , the gt looks way better in the front with a base looking eco , that’s why I got a gt premium lol
I owned a 2022 BRZ MT and now I drive a 2024 Mustang GT MT, I understand that the one review is an eco boost but comparing a Brz to a mustang is just unfair the Brz handling is increadible but past that it's pretty much mustang all the way.
I almost spit out my drink when i heard you say that GR86 was over 30K. That car shouldn't be more than 25K.
Love the comparison video. I’d love to see a VW Arteon vs Toyota Crown review.
