I got some dahlia "bulbs" several months ago and forgot about them. (I know, so dumb!) But now they are pretty dry and I don't know how to save them. Is it too late to plant them or should I just "store" them (and how do I do that) until next spring??? I am in No. San Diego county. Please advise this not so green thumb'd gardener...
Hi Denise, things to evaluate are: Zinnias need full sun to thrive and bloom. Ensure they are receiving at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. While nitrogen is essential for plant growth, too much of it can promote foliage at the expense of flowers-Check your fertilizer. If it has high nitrogen content, switch to one with a higher phosphorus content, which supports blooming. Zinnias need space to grow and bloom. If they are too close together, they might compete for nutrients and light, leading to excessive foliage growth. Thin out your zinnias to ensure they have enough space to grow. Ideally, space them 6-18 inches apart, depending on the variety. Poor soil quality can affect blooming. Zinnias prefer well-draining soil with good organic content. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve its quality. I didn’t realize how tall the zinnias to get! This was my first year using them in my garden. They actually got taller than my tomato plants. L O L.
