- Join me on my birthday for my little tradition of creating a homegrown birthday bouquet. The dahlias are in full swing and although it isn’t their best year, I sill have many blooms to pick! I’ll share lots of tips and tricks on how to make your blooms carry on blooming, and how to prolong the vase life of your bouquet at home.

Did you know Dalia's second name is Georgia? The name comes from the surname of a pastor's son from a small village of Konarzewo in Western Pomerania, Poland. A very interesting history of the town, about 15 kilometers away from us. Regards. :)

Kenzan (Japanese Flower Arranging): In Japanese flower arranging (ikebana), a kenzan is a pin frog or floral frog. It is a device that holds flowers in place within a vase or container. The kenzan has a heavy lead base with numerous brass or steel pins, which stabilize and arrange the flowers in the desired positions.

Happy belated birthday Katrina! Great tip putting chicken wire in bucket,you could also use a small piece attach to top of vase and that way the flowers won’t flop. Your gift was lovely I believe they are called frogs and have been around for ages. I hope you had a great birthday with some bubbly to go along with the lovely bouquets. Happy belated Birthday, nothing like spending time cutting flowers in your own garden on your birthday. What lovely arrangements, the simplicity of using the Kenzan was gorgeous, my friend uses those too. This was a timely video, I've been watching all I can about Dahlias. Seeing when is the best bloom time to cut is what I've been hoping someone would show us, I'm a newbie this year. Alexandria at Middle Sized Garden had one up earlier too, some great info there as well. Thanks for sharing all you know about everything.

Happy birthday! Your Dahlias are lovely! The chicken wire in your harvest bucket is brilliant! I use it in floral arrangements but never in the harvest bucket. You’ll love the pin floral frog, very easy to use!

They're called "pin holders", and have been around decades. The latest ones have sharp looking pins, a bit lethal looking. I also have oblong ones, and very small round ones for tiny arrangements.

Your dahlias are gorgeous this year. Like you I cut and bring in a lot of blooms throughout the season. This year here, first with a very hot and dry June then a drought (and forest fire smoke filling the valley everyday for weeks and weeks) through all of July, it seems my dahlias have suffered a bit. Now though, from mid-August on, after some welcome rain and the fire smoke clearing, dahlias are blooming well. I love that tinted jug and cylindrical vase you were using, very nice. Here inside my place I have dahlias, and other flowers, stuck into various vases along the long shelf that follows beneath several window sills. That chicken wire, having the wire in the tub, is a great idea. Shaking the blooms out before bringing them in is a good idea too. A few times I've brought dahlia blooms in and surprise surprise, a bee is resting hidden within the petals. Your garden is beautiful right now with all the flowers blooming. My garden is plum full of blooms too right now. Some of your white blooms look exquisite. One year I grew a white variety of dahlia that was exceptionally beautiful. The white petals on those flowers sparkled in the sun like they were covered in tiny jewels. Thanks for taking us along on your birthday garden tour! Have a spectacular year! Cheers!

Happy Birthday! The bug I briefly saw on the Dahlia was a brown marmorated stink bug. This is an imported agricultural pest that should be eliminated from your garden.
