    Great video. Speaking of deals, I bought 25 bags of organic raised beds dirt at home Depot in January for $1.10 a bag vs $10. They all thought I was nuts in the store brushing off snow and loading! Saved me a ton of money on my new bed

    I’ve been gardening for years and for the most part has been doing ok. I never looked at podcasts or spent time researching how to grow vegetables. I learnt as I went. So to me, the best tip was to keep it simple and learn as you grow and keep notes.
    All the tips were great. It was helpful to be reminded of the basics.
    Great video!

    I started learning how to garden in an area where I was unfamiliar with the climate, so I turned to youtube for advice. I quickly learned that every area has particular rules and needs. I was amazed to learn that some areas have summer rain. I have a solid 5 months without rain accompanied by scorching heat. My part of California is very different from coastal areas. Texas can have frost, some areas get colder than my 9a. Some 9a zones are humid, like Florida. All this said, I find the best learning comes from experimenting in my own garden. I try lots of different plants. I keep a journal and track the data, like weather and when flowers form, when fruit appears. I also track successes and failures. This really helps when planning each year.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Your approach to gardening is both insightful and practical! It’s amazing how much you’ve learned by diving in and experimenting with your own garden. Keeping a journal to track the weather, plant development, and your successes and failures is a fantastic way to tailor your gardening efforts to your unique climate. Understanding the specific needs of your area, especially in a state as diverse as California, is key to thriving as a gardener. Your dedication to learning and adapting is truly inspiring! 🌵📓🌸. Farmers markets! Picked up local garlic last fall for a fraction of the price I would have paid from a garlic dealer. Unlike a grocery store, you can ask the variety of pepper, tomato, whatever, if it is an heirloom, free seeds for next year. I did that with a orange bullhorn pepper last summer, doing great this year.
    If I knew in the beginning what I know about gardening, I would have skipped the raised beds. A one time tilling and the purchase of some quality compost would have been a lot easier and cheaper than the route I took.
    A lot of good tips! Stay Well!!!!

      What a lovely piece of advice! Peppers do tend to thrive when planted close together, as it can help with stability and support, especially if they’re in a windy area. They also create a microclimate that helps retain moisture and keep the roots cool. That phrase is a sweet reminder that plants, like people, often do better with a little companionship! 🌶️🤝

    If you`re at home all the time and there are animal pests use cheap driveway alarms to alert you. I use 5 of them to alert me to destructive armadillos, bunnies and deer. The deer learn to stay away but the armadillos can be relentless. The bunnies now have their own "garden" after I planted vining cow peas (Red Rippers) around the edge of the yard and under fruit trees. The bunnies get to eat, the peas keep growing back, and I get a harvest too. The peas add nitrogen to the soil around my fruit trees and are very drought and heat tolerant and the pollinators like the blooms.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      What a clever setup you’ve got there! Using driveway alarms to keep an eye on animal pests is such a smart idea, especially when dealing with persistent critters like armadillos. And giving the bunnies their own “garden” is a win-win-how thoughtful! Planting cowpeas around the edge of your yard not only keeps the bunnies happy but also benefits your fruit trees with that nitrogen boost. Plus, drought and heat tolerance make them perfect for your climate, and I bet the pollinators are loving those blooms. You’ve really created a harmonious garden ecosystem! 🌿🐰 CK

      @CaliKim29  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh no, dealing with pests like aphids and spider mites can be so frustrating! I totally get it-the costs can add up quickly. A budget-friendly tip is to make your own organic spray using ingredients like neem oil, insecticidal soap, or even a mix of water and a few drops of dish soap. Consistency is key, but I know it’s tough to keep up. Also, introducing beneficial insects like ladybugs or using a strong blast of water to knock off those pests can help too. Hang in there-you’ve got this! 🌿💪 CK

    How do you keep air circulation with using shade cloth like this past summer in 6B ( had at least 45 days of extreme heat and watering every other day)? I had lost strawberry plants between extreme heat and possible fungus ( yellow and black spots on leaves) from watering more often.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great question, Jeanette. A few things that I do are:
      I use a 40%-60% shade cloth..which allows air to flow underneath.
      I am constantly our there adjusting things - for example, towards the evening, I would go out and elevate the shade cloth and bring it down some over night and then further down to the ground in the morning - depending on the projected temps.
      Sometimes, I'll leave gaps/openings on the sides or ends, of the cloth; this allows cross ventilation preventing overheating and humidity in the shade cloth.
      Last, of course, I water in the early AM, sometimes in the evening and/or both, depending on the temps. are going to be -- keeping in mind not too much water sitting overnight.
      I hope this helps!? CK
