  • Lisa Gade reviews the new 27" iMac for 2017. The all-in-one comes standard with a 27” 5K Retina display with wide P3 color gamut, Thunderbolt 3, Apple’s Magic Mouse 2 and Bluetooth Magic Keyboard. The computer starts with quad core 65 watt Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake Core i5 CPUs, and a 4.2 GHz Core i7 is also available. It has AMD Radeon Pro 5xx series graphics (570, 575 and 580 available). The 3 stock configurations cost $1,799, $1,999 and $2,299, and we look at the $1,999 configuration in our review.
    The mac supports up to 64GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM, and is available with 1, 2 and 3 TB Fusion drives (a 7200 RPM HDD with large cache) or an SSD. The design is unchanged from the late 2015 iMac, other than the addition of two Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps) / USB-C Gen. 2 ports on the back. For those who want even more power, the iMac Pro will be available in December 2017.

      @asdfrozen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brian Radeer Chromebooks would be great now that they can run Android apps and come in the convertible variety. Desktops don't make much sense though since it's usually better to build yourself.

    • @brianradeer351
      @brianradeer351 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      asdfrozen desktops still serve a huge purpose for video and photo editing. Not everyone is mobile for extreme jobs and people will always need a desktop solution. (With all do respect of course). Legacy ports will be critical in the future.

    • @asdfrozen
      @asdfrozen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not saying desktops are bad, I'm saying it's typically better to build your own desktop rather than buying a prebuilt one.

      Young Kim, is it correct that if you buy the 256GB upgrade for the SSD this means that your 1TB fusion drive now has a 256 SSD? Surely, the 256 SSD is not a REPLACEMENT of the 1TB fusion drive? Thx.

      Like young kim said but it needs to be said: It has a big 128gb SSD drive inside it that automatically selects your most used files and programs and it obviously has the OS on it, and the rest is a 7200rpm HDD. You could also get PCIe flash storage too when you order.

    Unfortunately, Safari currently doesn't support VP9 so recently uploaded 4K TH-cam videos will max out in 1440p on Safari, and Chrome isn't colour managed so videos appear oversaturated on the P3 displays, so there's no perfect way I've found to watch TH-cam 4K on my 2016 iMac 😓

    • @SicSemperBeats
      @SicSemperBeats 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      plus something about chrome, when watching youtube videos on Mac OS it takes more of a toll on the cpu then the same video watched on safari. I kinda resale MacBooks and its noticeable on all MacBooks from the 2011 to the 2015. the Mac minis aswell

    • @Ostiosti
      @Ostiosti 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ultimatebestusername Isn't colour management handled by macos itself (not like in Windows where each application has to do it itself)?

    • @ultimatebestusername
      @ultimatebestusername 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it is supposed to be, but when I load up webpages on chrome they do appear far more saturated than safari for some reason. However, I need to correct myself, there must have been a recent change to chrome or the way youtube renders videos because it seems that at least the videos render colour correctly now, which wasn't the case before (although graphical elements on webpages still appear oversaturated).

    • @rohanjain4573

    Now I'm heavily consider an iMac once my hp workstation laptop which is slow as hell dies (5 1/2 years old).
    I want to make my own PC because know it's cheaper and and customizable, but it just seems daunting. It is nice that if I don't want to spend time building, there is a decent option from apple. (Wish they'd be more upgradeable though than just ram though.)

    Interesting watching the blackmagic tests! You can tell exactly where it had to move from the flash part of the fusion drive to the HDD. 1TB model is still only 32GB NAND unfortunately. Wonder if you can upgrade the blade SSD part of it.

    I for one like the black bezel. Gives it some style, and provides a nice contrast to the display. (And anyone who doesn't, at least they got rid of the outer aluminum bezel.) If they get rid of it, I guess that wouldn't be too bad either. I would however be pretty disappointed if they get rid of the "chin." Gives the slight impression of something more substantial; an actual computer, not just a "smart monitor."

    "Astronomic prices" - is you think, €3750,- (converted from US$) is much, then I imagine you'll be shocked to know €4959,- is preposterous beyond one's loosest expectation. Yes, that's what a 15" MacBook Pro with 3.1GH processor, 16GB memory and 2TB storage costs here in Europe! A rip-off of the a magnitude Æmæricæn can not imagine.

  • @tipoomaster
    @tipoomaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those inch big black bezels seem to date the design, a month ago I thought surely the new model would reduce those, either expanding the screen or just shrinking the chassis, I'm frankly surprised that did not happen.

    Hi. Nice. That's fast. I wish this they'd offer a trade-in for those who bought the late 2015 iMac just before Christmas last year (it's now obsolete, no Thunderbolt 3). This should have been the late 2016 iMac. God's will be done.

    Hey Lisa - would love to see a review of the 13" model. I am currently looking at changing my computer. Have the HP Spectre 2016 - the luxurious ash gold one , non 360 but unfortunately have had issues with it and even though it's the second model I've got from HP (they replaced it) - its still having motherboard issues with the USB-C ports. Got a 360 (2016) version and within 2 days the screen was faulty....Sooooo, everyone is trying to get me to go to Mac, and they are beautiful machines. Very wary of staying with HP, so I'd love to also hear about how the HP 360 has stood the test of time and what to be aware of. Thanks for the amazing reviews. You are by far - the best on youtube. Take care.

    I'm just curious about 4K video editing in 27" i5 3.4 GHz 1TB Fusion Drive (base model) or in 27" 3.5 GHz 1Tb Fusion Drive. I have to decide soon. Will it be big difference between two machines?
    Speed is important for me but the question is; is it worth to pay more money for a speed difference?

    I got a Mac Mini 7th Gen Quad Core i5 with a top speed of 3.5 Ghz, 8GBS of RAM (e-a-s-i-l-y expandable) and 512SSD. No fusion. Plus a 25 inch 2K monitor from Asus. Total price: $1028.
    Now -- if you know anything about Macs you know that's impossible. Because the MacMini is really an Asus VivoMini PC.
    Yeah, I know you're all "oooo IIICCCCKKK WinDOZE"... right? I used to be that way too. Lifelong MacUser. Always always ALWAYS had a desktop/iMac. But I simply couldn't justify it this time. For the price of that 27 inch iMac I not only have what I described but also an Asus Zenbook Flip. When I owned iMacs I couldn't justify having a MacBook too.
    Ahh... the sad old days...

    If the 575 can do unigine heaven 60ish fps at 1080p, it's pretty darn good, the 580 will play anything at 1080p, most games even at 1440p, which is fine for an iMac, if you want to game on a 5k monitor @ 60fps you need 1080ti or even 2 of them for some games. It was a good, much needed, upgrade from apple, I can't wait to see what they'll do with the new Mac Pro next year.

    Hi Lisa,
    Thanks for doing this review, I was wanting to see how these new iMac performed once people started getting them in the real world . I just bought a late 2015 27" top level standard config at the beginning of the year since I didn't know when Apple was going to release new mac, or if they were going to do something I wouldn't like and take away all user serviceable parts .
    From what I can tell from my own research and looking at what people are starting to say, because I don't edit 4k video currently . I won't notice much of a difference . Anyway I look forward to seeing how the new macs hold up. From my understanding Apple computers don't do the new 4k HDR standard officially either, which is something I enjoy on my Android based sony TV. Is it true, that if I wanted a computer with true HDR support that I would have to look outside of the Apple line of products ?
    Thanks

    I know I need an upgrade sometime soon, but I can speak for the longevity of the iMac, at least those from a few years ago. I currently run a 2010 iMac for professional print work (Photoshop, Indesign mostly), and it’s still chugging along nicely. It’s not the fastest machine in the world (no SSD) and I can no longer upgrade the OS (on Sierra, should have stuck with Mavericks, lol), but if the new iMacs are built to the same standard, you’re looking at 5+ years of good service :D (p.s I’m not Apple fan girling, just a long time professional user)

    I have a late 2013 27' iMac and a new 2017 5K iMac sitting side-by-side; the 2013 is absolutely silent; the new Mac there is constant fan noise, albeit fairly low level. It's not that big a deal but I think you said it was as quiet as the previous generation; it's actually a little noisier, it seems.

    • @waynengo1316
      @waynengo1316 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My 5k 2017 has fan noise at idle too. It sounds like a constant faint whispering compared to the quiet hum of my old desktop . I've monitored the fan rpm and cpu temp with Macs Fan Control. The rpm is at the minimum of 1200 and cpu temps are 50-52 C. I guess noise is the price we pay for cramming desktop graphics for the first time in an iMac. Previous gen graphics were mobile-based.

    Thank you for the thorough review! Our late 2009 24” iMac gave up the ghost this week. We took it into a local shop and they put a new hard drive in it and got it running again, but my wife and I decided to order the 2017 27” iMac. I am excited for the upgrade! Up until the moment it crashed, the 24” iMac served us well, but it has been showing it’s age, especially when we were left behind for the os updates a little over a year ago (or was it two years ago?). Anyways, I’m glad the 2017 one was introduced this year. It will be nice to have a considerable upgrade shipped to us early next week!

    I feel like the 27" 5K iMac is the perfect Mac at the perfect price. If you think of the price, that's $1,000 included.

    These iMacs are Apples best Macs by far and are priced pretty reasonable especially for having one if not the best displays on the market. You really cant go wrong with it, now with iOS 11 on iPad these iMacs are looking great for my Mac, nice review

    Thank you for the great reviews, they sound really independent and it's obvious you know very well what you're talking about.
    I'd love to hear what you think of Custom Macs.

    On the 21.5 in" imac. Have they added an access door for the ram? Like the 27".

    That disk speed test is actually very bad. The MBP 2016 clocks at 1300 MB/s

    Lisa, a fusion drive is actually 2 software connected drives: 1 small SSD for OS and common apps, and 1 HDD for file storage and less commonly used apps

    • @MrHenrikAndersson
      @MrHenrikAndersson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it's 1 hybrid drive with a larger than normal NAND storage that is visible and shown as a combined space, and it relies on software to cache regularly used files just like all other.

      Henrik Andersson I have replaced a failing SSD on an iMac with Fusion Drive. It is a separate component from the HDD. After replacement, it had to be “re-fused” using Disk Utility.
