The candles really hammer home how terrifying and godawful living under the Valyrian yoke would be. It’s a surveillance state, one that can get in your mind in a way the Party from 1984 could only dream of.
Marwyn sailing with a glass candle feels like the Light counterpart to Euron, a sorcerer ship captain that could use magic to avoid storms and whatever else
I always looked at Asoiaf in a literal sense, from a science and fact point of view. These videos have shown me just how much symbolism and meaning George has woven while still creating a believable and realistically detailed world. Great stuff, dude.
There's a whole Bell, Book, and Candle witchcraft symbolism thing going on with Dany. It's got me wondering about that book Pate/the Alchemist/character formerly known as J'aquen might be stealing. I think it's safe to assume Danny's coming back from Vaes Dothrak with a crap ton of bells.
GRRM was raised Catholic, the three black and one green glass candles reminds me of the advent candles burning in mass the month before Christmas, 3 purple (or white), 1 pink. And the pink was always third making it seem even more conspicuous. There’s also a wreath tied in that symbol but it feels like drawing inspiration from real life, just with a fantasy bloodmagic twist.
Here I can see another Tolkien/LOTR reference from George RR Martin. Glass candles remind me a lot of the _palantiri_ or seeing stones. They were gifts to the Dunedain from the Noldor Elves and are tied to the Numenórean royal bloodline. One can use said stones, as Sauron and Saruman did. However, true mastery of a _palantir_ comes from blood right. That is why Aragorn (who in many ways is similar to Dany) was able to dominate the Orthanc Stone and openly defy Sauron. For this same reason, Denethor could master the Anor Stone in Minas Tirith. Even though he was from a lesser Dunedain noble family, he wielded the authority of the Kings of Gondor and the stone recognized said power in him. So, the "blood magic" related to the glass candles may come from having Valyrian or Great Empire of the Dawn blood as Quaithe (who comes from the Shadow), Dany or perhaps Marwyn have. I apologize for the long text, but I'm a huge fanboy for both Tolkien and Martin and I just can't stop drawing parallels between both of these great stories.
I always thought that Dany would somehow absorb the knowledge of the East. In dreams, black candles can symbolize hidden secrets and knowledge, as well as the mind exploring mysteries and the unknown. This fits very well with what you state in your video.
This actually makes a lot of sense. Helps Dany’s arc by looking at Asshai and ties in Marwyn the Mage. Not too out there considering she saw the Great Emperors of the Dawn in AGOT. Excellent content Lucy!
If Dany has a glass candle they won't have to do that awful journey north of the wall arc in season 7 🤔 I'm sad to have missed the last few livestreams! Hoping to tune in next time
In the books, Dragons won't cross the wall. They refuse to fly over it. Remember that the Wall was made using the magic of the Children of the Forest. A different magic than that of dragons . Ice magic as opposed to the fire of dragons which come from Old Valyria.
Euron's Valyrian steel armor has been in the Iron Islands for millennia. Balon Blackskin, an ancient Ironborn figure of legend, had dark skin that was impervious to any weapon, and Euron's armor is scale-mail, which is descibed as fitting like a glove (Rohanne Webber) or a second skin (Danelle Losthon, I believe). So Valyrian steel, being dark colored and unbreakably hard, if made into a suit of scale armor, would be like black skin that is impervious to weapons. Euron probably got the armor after he killed Baelor Blacktyde. That, or Balon Blackskin was actually Luke Cage.
I’ve always thought Balon Blackskin and the tales of the ancient Ironborn having black weapons that drank the souls of those whom they slew were references to Azor Ahai people (Great empire of the Dawn) in Westeros
Anything that upgrades magic in the story is my cup of tea. Daenerys as a sorceress is awesome, I can't wait for it, but do you think she would have to make a blood sacrifice to use the horn or the glass candle?
I'm pretty much sold on this theory, but the idea that somebody else could be on the other side of the 'candle call' when Sam recounted his story is brilliant! Could it be Quaithe? Maybe some other sorcerers from Ashaii? Or could possibly some priests of R'hollor have access to the candle, and maybe they did a Zoom call presentations in the temple in Volantis! :)

I think the fact that Quaithe tells Dany that she's gonna find "the truth" in Asshai gives more credence to the theory that Asshai was the capital of the GEotD. Or at least that it was important city.
I’ve always wondered, what would the Citadel/Maesters do if a student was able to use a glass candle on their night with it. Is it truly designed to snuff out believers, or was it at one point intended to alert them to those who may know secrets they don’t wish be revealed. Those who could somehow have an accident afterwards.
Sam could steal another glass candle from the Citadel before Euron gets there and save it for the Wall and Jon to communicate with Dany and Marwyn later. I just remembered the Sam the Stealer Winter predictions episode

It would be really interesting if Drogon takes Danny back to old valyria and they discover something big. ALSO the reason why the Tagaryens didn't bring any real magic with them was probably because they weren't that powerful of a house in Valyria. As I understand it they were one of the lower or even lowerst houses in valyria probably so poor they didn't even had the money to buy glass candles. I think they will be possibly be used as swords if someone can install a hilt onto them. Black for Dany, Green for Coldhands or some leader of the Children of the Forest.
Stannis recalls multiple colours of dragonglass, though they were predominantly black.“On Dragonstone, where I had my seat, there is much of this obsidian to be seen in the old tunnels beneath the mountain,” the king told Sam. “Chunks of it, boulders, ledges. The great part of it was black, as I recall, but there was some green as well, some red, even purple. I have sent word to Ser Rolland my castellan to begin mining it. I was looking for information (not wild guesses :-P) about whether a green glass candle would e.g. allow for different types of watching/communication compared to what a black glass candle has to offer. Also: what type of cost is associated with creating resp. using a glass candle? In this world, magic doesn't come for free...
Yes! I wanted to ask the same thing. The only thing the colors remind me of in the story is the Blacks vs the Greens in the dance of the dragons.. But that was about dress colors iirc? Wondering really what the differences could be, as well as the price of using/lighting one...
I love your premade vids, you put a lot of great work into them, not saying your streams dont have it either, but I love how great this type of video is, and I feel like you get to experiment more like this. I find the streams can go all over the place and can be hard to follow if im not paring attention. Anyway, love all your content LML, keep up the amazing work man!!!
Great video. Totally worth the wait. I have a feeling there will be no Marwyn POV chapters. Much like Euron, being privy to those inner monologues would give too much away.
Her parts of the stories have too many of the few Glas candle references. And then with the end of the 4th book explaining what they are, it's obvious. I think in the last 2 books she will use the candles to see for herself, or show others, the night king or the army of the dead. And also to potentially learn more valyrian magic. I hope Marwyn makes his way to Danny. Because marwyn the mage is by far the most interesting secondary character in all the books.
"Could see across mountains, seas and deserts" I was wondering... is dragonglass candles the equivalent of the weirwood trees but from fire perspective? I mean, the greenseers can do the same with the trees
I don't think George planned for Marwyn to meet Daenerys from the beginning, because this does not fit his 'gardening' writing style. But it does show how that writing style works: he randomly drops the name of a random maester in the story (a seed), and then later when the plot needs a seed to grow he looks around for planted seeds to water the right one. I'm not even sure if glass candles were an idea from the beginning (although obviously earlier than Marwyn crossing her path). But other than that, 100% agree with the theories laid out in this video. I wonder why it's so specifically specified that one of the candles is green...
Def could be, but he also had a lot of ideas early on which he lays the groundwork for. The glass candles are mentioned in book 2. But it could be more like you say as well, it’s hard to say.
I just wanted to say, while I enjoy your streams a lot and they make sense as a more reliable format for content, your actual theory videos are always my favorites. Your effort really shows. I'm glad you added the text when you read a quote (I think there were a few of your videos that didn't have any text) because I like to read along. It's harder to become distracted that way, and I feel it's easier to understand for people who may speak English as a second language. In any case, thank you for the video and Praise Garth, friend.
Love all the content you've been putting out lately. David. This ASOIAF esotericism has been getting me through the past 2 weeks. I hope sincerely that you're doing well, and that you're getting adequate rest between uploads.
At 1st I was like uh mmmmmmmmm i don`t knooooooow.... Will Dany trust Marwin since he is connected to miri maz dur ? But when I think about it more, I believe that Danny now knows why Miri did what she did, and that she would have probable done the same in her place
Great video, what a body of work you have on ASOIAF and mythology! I wonder though, is Quaith perhaps a version of Daenerys? Guiding her, so that she can become something else than her valeryan ancestors.
I want to ask LML is there any way Dany could “break bad” that would satisfy his head cannon. I think if she “wins” the game but turns into a calculating, ruthless ruler like Stannis/Tywin combo that would be fine with me. 🤷♂️ (more nuance than the show is an absolute given)
God I hope he releases the book soon. I can't be the only one who watched this and remembered "Wait wtf it's been year since my last reread and thought it was coming out soon"
When Marwyn said he knew most of it I assumed he did use the glass candle to listen to sam telling his story to Alleras. And somehow i just accepted without thinking that Marwyn send Alleras to catch Sam. Somehow i thought of the candle but at the same time i thought so small.
A group of old men making decisions for Daenerys' regime without her is thematic, so the battle solved by just a dragon in air and a horn blow or someone like Sweets, Pretty Maris, Tyrion, Quentin, Plumm riding one with a horn blow is possible. I find it just as likely Daenerys returns with Drogon with horn blown, all depends on how long she's gone.
The green one makes me think of the green crystals from the old Superman movies. Perhaps the candles themselves contain knowledge. Btw, there is currently technology that exists to save data into glass and have a laser read it. The line between science fiction and reality continues to thin.
Oh hit my head, Kryptonite!?! That would make sense with "Doom of Valyairia" equals the "destruction of Krypton" and Aegon and two sisters is General Zod and co. Haven't read the prequels yet, so still wonder who is Kal El (Superman).
Excellent video. Clarity is so crisp I can almost read titles on your bookshelf. Not sure if you added enough glass candle cgi, tho. Q: Do you think maybe Dany will come across a glass candle by… less direct means? Technically, any dragonglass is some form of “glass candle”, and I’d be very interested to see what even a dragonglass dagger would do in Dany’s presence.
It was Quaithe..... It's always Quaithe. Whenever there is a question you do not have an answer to in ASOIAF, the "go-to" answer is Quaithe. Or sometimes Bloodraven. Or maybe the Green Men on the Isle of Faces. Oh, and the Unicorns on Skagos.
Can you imagine if Jon and Dany's first meeting is through his skinchanging making contact with her using a glass candle. I can imagine on this dream plane, Dany might at first be intimidated by Jon, looking somewhat dead and with a huge white wolf by his side, only for her to realise she is appearing to Jon as a giant black dragon.
Think there's any chance spying on the White Walkers via the glass candles could have the same kind of magical result Bran runs into when bumping into the Night King during one of his weirnet surfs in the show?
These captions are a 😂 very welcome new feature. The quality of your videos, only ever goes up! Thanks for the cool content, David! 👏😎 Always great to see a new lml video pop up on my feed.

This was amazing, well done btw! My mind has so many possible ways these candles could be used for good, and evil. Scary that Euron is collecting everything magical he can. I hope he bites off more than he can chew. Or we’re fucked lmao.
That’s probably what’s gonna happen it’ll corrupt him and that’s what’s gonna be his undoing I can see him trying to kill Dany but she’s definitely gonna end him
This might be a dumb question but why doesn't Marwyn just astrally project himself to Dany à la Quaithe, instead of taking the long and perilous journey to Slaver's Bay? If he's supposed to be counseling Dany wouldn't that be much easier to do from within the Citadel where he has access to books and ravens and no risk to his safety? This might actually supports LmL's idea that maybe part of the reason he left Oldtown is to bring a Glass candle to Daenerys.
@@DavidLightbringer Maybe Marwyn has his own ulterior motives. If he needs to persuade Dany to fulfill her destiny it might involve something that isn't quite in her interests

Bro your content is second to none in my humble opinion! And I watch every song of ice and fire channel known to man
Looking forward to what marwyn the mage does in the next book. I want more magic and more truths revealed
Thanks LmL just when I needed something to watch so thoughtful of you
I love your premade vids, you put a lot of great work into them, not saying your streams dont have it either, but I love how great this type of video is, and I feel like you get to experiment more like this. I find the streams can go all over the place and can be hard to follow if im not paring attention. Anyway, love all your content LML, keep up the amazing work man!!!
Dude I love the way you read the passages and quotes even when it’s supposed to be light hearted you turn it into something dark and creepy 😂😂
Great video. Totally worth the wait.
I have a feeling there will be no Marwyn POV chapters. Much like Euron, being privy to those inner monologues would give too much away.
been missing that intro music 🔥🎶
Her parts of the stories have too many of the few Glas candle references. And then with the end of the 4th book explaining what they are, it's obvious. I think in the last 2 books she will use the candles to see for herself, or show others, the night king or the army of the dead. And also to potentially learn more valyrian magic. I hope Marwyn makes his way to Danny. Because marwyn the mage is by far the most interesting secondary character in all the books.
hell yeah!
David, you actually make me laugh out loud. I love your humor and find you extremely witty.
"Could see across mountains, seas and deserts"
I was wondering... is dragonglass candles the equivalent of the weirwood trees but from fire perspective?
I mean, the greenseers can do the same with the trees
Kind of, but the trees access the past and the candles do not. But yeah, very similar
Great catch
Dany is such a great character. Thanks for teaching us just how deep it all is
That is an absolutely unnecessarily sexy picture of Gendry give us a warning first omg 🤯🤯🤯
“..may have endowed with...”
None of this is accident hahaha
Isn`t he like 14?
16:25 maybe he uses the candle to find Dany to send riders out to guide her home.
oh sure, that makes sense! I like it
At 1st I was like uh mmmmmmmmm i don`t knooooooow....
I've never heard this, though I like it
I want to ask LML is there any way Dany could “break bad” that would satisfy his head cannon.
Yet another great video. Loved all the captions.
“I’d kill a man for some Signs and Portents”
“this can be arranged”
Heh heh heh
Dude! Excellent video LML! I love the little animations and edits, the content quality is raising all the time my dude! PRAISE GARTH.
Dany will NOT be a mad queen! She will be dooopeeee!
When Marwyn shows up in Mereen will Dany still be gone? Maybe Tyrion will get a look at the candle first
A group of old men making decisions for Daenerys' regime without her is thematic, so the battle solved by just a dragon in air and a horn blow or someone like Sweets, Pretty Maris, Tyrion, Quentin, Plumm riding one with a horn blow is possible.
I find it just as likely Daenerys returns with Drogon with horn blown, all depends on how long she's gone.
So much great content recently from you! Thankyou LML!
hey thanks I'm working hard out here
The green one makes me think of the green crystals from the old Superman movies.
Ty for the Primus poster center background
I love the description of the glass candle burning.
The little comic speech bubbles were so f'ing good
Ah thank you Jon I put too much thought into those lol
I always assumed they were some sort of magical fundamentalists that rejected sone/most magic.
oh yes - all but Marywn. Check out Sam's last AFFC chapter if you haven't read it :)
Two different conversations between you two, maybe? Are you talking about Targaryens or Maesters?
Excellent video. Clarity is so crisp I can almost read titles on your bookshelf. Not sure if you added enough glass candle cgi, tho. Q: Do you think maybe Dany will come across a glass candle by… less direct means? Technically, any dragonglass is some form of “glass candle”, and I’d be very interested to see what even a dragonglass dagger would do in Dany’s presence.
I’ve wondered about the difference between candles and knives - it could be the candles are consecrated initially to make them function as candles
Don’t forget time-travel Bran from the future and past.
@@DavidLightbringer Shit, I forgot! Although Time-Travel Bran is probably just Quaithe anyway.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!! so psyched for this....got shivers..let's go!!!
Oooh good idea... yeah totally.
These captions are a 😂 very welcome new feature.
The quality of your videos, only ever goes up!
Thanks for the cool content, David!
👏😎
Always great to see a new lml video pop up on my feed.
I was waiting for this. Professor David Lightbringer ♥️ solid analysis. There is no doubt that Dany will use a glass candle 🕯️. It seems necessary to fulfill her vision about breaking the slavery chains in any meaning. She wants to bring a new state of living but she must learn all about the old one in order to replace it.
Thank you so much.
Appreciate all the recent uploads! Your videos are a great way to nerd out and puff. Most of my friends, never read the books and are sick of me talking about them...
"Stop telling me about Varamyr Six Skins!!"
And Skin Changing in general. D&D failed
This is some of your best editing yet! The sorcery is far from over.
I always wondered if Dany would recognize Marwyn from what mirri maz dur told her
I like thumbnail picture for this video🎥
They are a good artist.
💥💥🔥🔥🐉🐲🐉🔥🔥💥💥
Asshai may still be seen, and she still may “go” there. Maybe without her body, and only as her conscious self, but she may still find herself “in” Asshai soon enough.
So you're saying there's a chance? . .
😏
I love the drawing @ 4:51 It has been the background of my desktop multiple times.
Offering to the algorithm gods!
I’ve been listening to a series of your videos since I’ve found your channel and they’re fantastic! So interesting and well done!
Hair is on point dude!
Squad, assemble! (been excited for this video LmL thank you so much!!)
Squad, Go!
I also think what Quinn said is true that she will take her army in the dragons to upper East and get them and catch the others from behind going over the mountain of the morn into the gray waist
"... that's probably because I'm eccentric and flashy."
Yes, and we adore it.
Dave, love the Solid Snake-esque take on Marwyn 🐍
I've been too salty over season 8, that I haven't been able to read or listen to anything ASoiaF, but I can finally watch you again! Maybe the salt is fading? Thank you for continuing to make great content/tinfoil.
This is a beautiful comment and I love it
Wow great picture resolution! Love your new camera! It’s so sharp 👌❤️
excellent video! glass candles are hard to understand, how do they really work and why do they work. love the discussion.
Let’s gooo! 🕯
This was amazing, well done btw! My mind has so many possible ways these candles could be used for good, and evil. Scary that Euron is collecting everything magical he can. I hope he bites off more than he can chew. Or we’re fucked lmao.
That’s probably what’s gonna happen it’ll corrupt him and that’s what’s gonna be his undoing I can see him trying to kill Dany but she’s definitely gonna end him
That new cam is suave
LML you think Marwyn would be willing to use his valyrian rod ring and mask to make a sword or some armor for Dany? Thanks for all the dope vids
Enjoyed the stream!!! Thanks for the content !!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Nice, just woke up from a Garth induced coma to this 👌🏽
Great video as usual.
Well, Dany wouldn’t have any idea who Marwyn was... Quaithe appeared to Dany in person twice. But yeah I think the point is to bring her the candle
@@DavidLightbringer Maybe Marwyn has his own ulterior motives. If he needs to persuade Dany to fulfill her destiny it might involve something that isn't quite in her interests
Okay, out of all the fun references, I'm limiting myself to skb case. The classic hard case.
Hahah there’s a joke for everyone in there...
Sooo, Aemon's body still in a barrel on the Swan? What do you imagine might happen with that, being King's Blood and all?
It’s definitely a good symbol. Hope Sam and Gilly didn’t accidentally get drunk off Aemon rum hahaha
I really luv this video I've been rewatching your Danny videos this an Who is the Real Danny Book V's Show so much great information knowing she is far more important than what they did to her in the show
Are you going to see The Green Knight (Sir Gawain and The Green Knight) this Friday?
def gonna see it soon
Is this a new film?
@@Pentagathusosaurus Yes, was due out about a year ago but was postponed due to Covid.
@@user-ln7jw2qn6h noice. I looked it up, got super excited by the trailer and then found out that it's release has been cancelled here in the UK again because they were worried we might have a covid spike coming up. Sad times
@@Pentagathusosaurus Sorry, to hear that. I believe now it's currently only showing in theaters, but hopefully, it will reach a streaming services somewhere.
Gotta admit, that black candle illustration is kinda suggestive.
If the Church of Starry Wisdom was founded by the Bloodstone Emperor, could you see the possibility of Marwyn being one of the 3 betrayers in favor of Euron?
That doesn't make sense at this point in the story since he hasn't earned her trust yet and I think it's unlikely she will.
Wow great video! The hair is lookin slick my dude
Thank you! Funny, well explained and well augmented as usual!
"I'd pick the green one" Garth gang
I’m new to the community and I just love your content! I really appreciate your perspective and I am very much enjoying the videos! Thank you for sharing your awesome self with the world so people like myself may experience this 🎉
