    LmL is giving GRRM the credit he deserves for the sheer ambition of his storytelling. There’s so much more to ASOIAF than the red wedding... if only the show runners of GoT had a shred of interest in literature, myth, and the deep tradition of symbolic storytelling within which GRRM has rooted his garden! Thank you LmL, I’ll be watching this one a second time.

    It’s so sad that most of this symbolism is completely unnoticed by even the educated. But I find it hilarious, how George works with apparent indifference and detachment. He hides gold nuggets in a plain piece of text and in doing so his work has been seen by more people than almost anyone. It’s subtle, understated, humble, and therein lies it’s true greatness.

    • @DavidLightbringer
      @DavidLightbringer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      totally agree, and I will add that using archetypal symbolism like this works *even if* the reader doesn't consciously pick up on it, because the archetypes are familiar to us, having appeared in stories throughout our whole lives. Dany already seems god-like; then you do this research and you realize *why*

    Daenerys is the character who made me realize George brilliant writing and read the rest of his work,she is truly George’s greatest character,when her story is complete she will be his icon and may even inspire many young writers as her show character did even though they tried to ruin her,While George is playing with the complex aspect between mother of dragons and mhysa her ending arc is clearly “Mother to All” I thought that at second time reading hotu chapter and as i get deeper in her storyline and George’s stories and speeches of his way of writing I know believe in it.

      If Dany's story isnt finished in Winds of Winter then we will never know her ending. I do have faith that we will get Winds of winter , most likely around the time the HBO series "House of the Dragon" premieres. But the thing is, we will never get "A Dream of Spring" . We will never learn of the end of Song of Ice and Fire. And it makes me so upset. I wish I was wrong but its absolutely clear we will not get Dream of Spring.I'm still accepting it. I feel real bad for the many who believe George will finish this and write and release Dream of Spring.

    One interesting thing I learned was that:
    Everyone’s souls are made of the same kind of “energy”. In Hinduism, gods have souls too, they just create a physical body to act as a vessel. The souls of all living creatures are made of the same thing that the souls of gods are made from.
    Meaning, every soul is just a droplet that rises from a water body when something is dropped into it. They are all parts of a primordial chaos sea, different versions and aspects of the same thing.

    Top work. Best asoiaf video out there so far. George is a genius. Also Pyramid means fire within/the middle. Dany in Mereen is her coming to her God power and her dragons are kept deep down there. Ready to be released like a volcano. Volcanoes are also evident in the dragonstone v storm god myth setup. If dragons are fire made flesh, then the Magma forms the mound and thus the stone dragon.

    Just wanna point out that Aphrodite was actually a sort of war goddess: when she came to Greece she was a remnant of Ishtar, who was a goddess of love and war. Her cult first came to land close to Sparta, who didn't mind to have a goddess of war or a goddess who is associated with both war and love. When she got more popular with the rest of Greece tho, the war Aphrodite and love Aphrodite became two different entities. There's an interesting video made by 'overly sarcastic productions'. It's just called Aphrodite or the origins of Aphrodite I think.

    It is a wonderful coincidence that I was dreaming of Shiva and Translucent Darkness some days ago. I am a Schizoid so my Dreams are a way for me to synthesise my Inner Thoughts. And, this video did resonate with me. I love Dany too and her sensuality. Daario is lucky but he makes Dany feel so awesome in the Books especially when they had each other in every way possible before she goes on to marry Hizdahr. I connect more with Bran as a PoV, but Dany has an elusive ethereal touch to her. She is more Magical a Being than even Bran. Bran receives Magic and is a conduit. But Dany is Magic herself.

      @@DavidLightbringer I thought of the dosh khaleen symbolism meaning "faulty incarnations of Kali". They each were as Dany was, a Khaleesi, but they were fell short and didn't fight or challenge their fate of becoming a 'dosh khaleen', a faulty Kali, whereas Dany is the "true Kali", embodying her aspects in ways the others didn't and who defied her fate of being just another "dosh". I remember the head of the dosh khaleen in the show telling Dany that she too was supposed to be the mother of the stallion who mounts the world, but somehow failed to birth them, but Dany didn't fail. Rhaego was thought to be the stallion, but in GRRM fashion, the prophecy was fulfilled differently than interpreted. Dany, with the life of Rhaego, Drogo, and MMD, was reborn with her dragons. It could be that she is the stallion, or her dragons through Rhaego's life essence.

    That being said, you've also gotten really good at TL;DRing these Mythic Level ideas and symbols into easily digestible 30 minute vids. It's like watching a college lecture done-up as a weekly TV drama but you also get a feature film that busts open new doors in the franchise!

    Wow!! I never realised there was so much vedic mythology strewn across asoiaf! Kali = Khaleesa, Mirri Maaz Dur and Durga as well as Shayala's dance and dance of Shaila were great observations! I never compared Dany to Parvati before since I thought she resembled Draupadi from the Mahabharata. But this has begun to convince me! Loved it. I can't wait for more!!!

    In Hindu myth Shiva is a god who is a nomad like figure who doesn't have any wish for ruling because his way of life is different(just like how khal doesnt understand the westerosi obsession with the iron throne) and his wife Sati, is a princess of a king Daksha (just like Dany who is a essentially a princess from a different land).
    And also Sati burns herself after her husband was humiliated by her father (he doesn't invite Shiva to an important ritual). Shiva's followers kill Sati's father king Dhaksha.
    Just like how when Khal is blood sacrificed by Mirri Maz Durr and Dany climbs on to the pyre sacrificing herself and later Dothrakis who never cross the sea are willing to kill the Westerosi ruler.

    Cool video.
    One of the points made by GRRM in his writing (Armageddon rag, ASOIAF, a song for lya, and seven times never kill man, etc) is that collective consciousness and shared memory are powerful. And acting on the adage that "those who don't write have good memories," referring to human cultures and their poetic/sung retelling of history and myth. GRRM demonstrates this power in his own settings through song and myth, and sometimes trees (or weird little pyramid things). It is through retelling that we keep the history of humanity over countless thousands of years alive, and with its destruction, we are reduced. I think that is part of the reason that GRRM seeks to incorporate these mythologies into his work. Tolkien did the same. Finally something ACTUALLY similar about them. I mean, he gets called the American Tolkien all the time, but they are so different... it's nice to actually have some basis for that comparison lol. I think GRRM would say that the morals are important, but dogmatic rigidity isn't. That heroes and archetypes are important, but saying XYZ (think jesus, azor ahai) is the only hero is just as destructive. Because it seeks to limit transmission of ancient teachings. Again, another aspect of GRRM's writing is what humanity becomes in interregnum. When we lose something that we had before. You can hear the lament of the free folk in 'last of the giants'. And that, I believe, is a true lamentation of George's. That we have become either too modern and cynical (think Jon's "but I can see giants over there, there must be a hundred of them", "you know nothing" tears tears), or too dogmatic and rigid (think melly sanders and her "all pagan gods are demons and servants of the other" when in reality it's all one "chaos realm" as you put it). There are lessons we have fought hard to learn, and died countless millions of deaths to learn, and we forget them, and in forgetting we lose something. I truly believe that ASOIAF is George's attempt to bring us back a little of our own history, to help us learn these lessons again vicariously. As Jon, and Tyrion, and Danny, and Davos, and Ned, and Caitlyn, and Theon, and Bran, and Arianne, and Quinten, and Cersei, and and and and.... Every one of these characters, that he made up in his brain, delivers a moral fable based on an imaginary world. It's not real, yet it's the most real thing that has been written in while, and he does it with expert subtlety.
    One thing that I find weird is how many people haven't actually read anything else except ASOIAF and supporting material. None of that has ended yet, every part of that material is: More to follow, part 1/2, etc. I think that's the thing people aren't prepared for, the end. What about fevre dream? What about nightflyers? What about starlady? What about bitterblooms? What about The Hero? That last one got GRRM out of the Vietnam war by the way, so you just know the ending is hard hitting. People took season 8 poorly because it didn't end how they expected. But the sad reality is, if his other work (and I mean every other story) is anything to go by, what we saw was D&D making the ending more viewer friendly. GRRM writes crunchy fucked up endings to stories. "and then the people hung their children to strangle at the end of ropes from the walls of their city, and burned their entire harvest, just as a brutal winter set in. The end." "and then they never got off the planet, and everyone became junkies and probably died, the end." "and then Robb lost the love of his life to a cult who's whole purpose is to feed people to a fungus, the end." "and Marsh lost everything after being manipulated and used as a regretful, yet still ultimately disposable, puppet by Joshua. Just so Joshua could enact his plan to free his people from bondage, but it's ok because they visit Marsh's grave sometimes, the end." Don't be surprised when it's "and the prophecy was true, but azor ahai was actually the bad guy, and when he "came back" as the emotionally unstable & traumatized 15 year old with dragons, she murders everyone and also the children of the forest were bad guys too and they also now have control of Westeros, the end." It's savage stuff, and most of the time gives basically no real closure. That's why I laugh whenever I see people bitch about TWOW (which is really them bitching about wanting the series to end, to have all the content), because it won't make a difference, people that thirsty are going to be disappointed when they get a GRRM ending. Which in itself is a part of the lessons I was talking about earlier, and I think his kind of ending is a really hard lesson for people to learn. That nothing is assured, and often things don't work out as you think, there's always a little bad with the good, and good with the bad.
    Take care dude.

    • @DavidLightbringer
      @DavidLightbringer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey great comments Chelsea, I loved especially "I truly believe that ASOIAF is George's attempt to bring us back a little of our own history, to help us learn these lessons again vicariously." Couldn't agree more, and well said. However I also still disagree about the endings, particularly when it comes to Dany. She's actually not emotionally unstable at all; she's very well grounded and has a better moral compass than most. She's very true to her core values, which revolve around giving other people the protection and safety she was denied as a child. I just don't see her going against that without completely destroying the character. I think there is a reason why George crafted Dany to be so caring and protective, so self-sacrificing. Those ideals need to weather a big storm, and I think they will. I think she'll end up dying, and not ruling, and there will be plenty bitter about it all. She may not be remembered as the hero she really is. Her and Jon will both have to give themselves up to the struggle in awful ways, same as bran... but I don't think the ending will be as much of a bring-down as some of his short stories. I mean, he's kinda packing all those emotions into the main story this time around, isn't he? Robb and Catelyn and so many other people's stories do end like that. Maester Cressen for example. But I think understanding that Dany is literally the divine feminine incarnate makes me think George simply cannot and will not end her story in disgrace and madness.

    • @mistermaestersirthomas9164
      @mistermaestersirthomas9164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mostly agree, just wanted to make a small point. GRRM'S main goal is to write a masterpiece, not just in a modern sense, but a ?literal? one "a culmination of his previous work and learning." It's why ASOIAF is filled with allusions to history, legends, myths, fairy tales, movies, and especially his own previous work; all being the culminations that taught him to create a masterpiece and becoming a master in his field. I think this is important to understand because it tells us that his function of the book will outweigh the form. He is crafting a mystery for his deepest fans and being that he's from era that made works like the movie "Murder by Death" doesn't want to reveal an answer that can't be solved by the clues given beforehand. It's why it is fantasy rather than sci-fi, to fool the Preston Jacobs of the world; It's also why the story has reversed mythologies, beware of unicorns/play with dragons; and it's why the story will be dissatisfying to people, because it's extrapolated from culmination of what has come before not what will be pleasing to the readers (though that can be a occasional side effect, it's not the main goal).
