    Outside the box , the way our nation grew to be the greatest of the world. Nice work. Im sure refinements will come.

    For the folks not liking this setup, keep in mind that many industrial broaching operations are horizontal. Horizontal is good because the broach doesn't fall on the floor every time it passes through, as happens when using a vertical press.
    If you use a porta power hydraulic pump unit, you won't need the springs, as it is self retracting.

      porta power's are really nice, and work good for this as mentioned

    Great setup for a frankenstien. I call them scrap box fabs. One shop I worked at had a broaching press made with a regular cylinder from tractor supply place, a 1 1/2 hp electric motor with a hydraulic pump rigid mounted. A valve mounted on the leg of the beast and a pail the oil came in for a reservoir. If only 200, your setup probably makes more sense. Great vid.

    Interesting. No part lock down required. Thanks for sharing this.

    Agreed, the broach I use at my work is definitely much easier to use than a manual press. Especially when I'm having to broach 1/2" keyways in S7 rolls.

    Nice build for the resources you have. Perhaps when you make more, you can get a small hydraulic pump package and a ram, two way valve, and overpressure bypass valve.

    my suggestion would be to make some sort of shield between you and those Springs. Nothing fancy but just a steel plate to stop them from causing any harm

    I'm sure it's been brought to your attention before, but you really should use a hat at the end of your cylinder! Even a simple piece of pipe with the end capped to save wear and tear on the piston end. Since you have the bolts at the end, it can be held there.. and have room to make better spring mounts!

    moly dee is some prime cutting oil for that job, and a manual press gets old after awhile even with a extension.

    I would like to have parts made how many do you have to have a machine shop make before before the price becomes reasonable?

    I like it.. small suggestion... make a guide plate for the broach... so it lines it up straight going in. Would basically be a small block.

    You may want to consider covering the right hand portion (those springs when extended). Some kind of polycarbonate blast shield. Those springs look like they want to make a mess of your eyeballs.

    Any plan to sell these? I could think of a few other uses for this set up, where the rigidity and extra stroke would be much better than the HF 20ton press.

    I just ordered a set of SWAG wings for my HF roller. I haven't tried roll bending my 1-1/2" tube yet. I'm guessing that the tool isn't going to hold up as well as I would like. Would you be willing to replicate this broaching process on my 1-1/2" die for a fee?

  • @Swagoffroad
    @Swagoffroad  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It is not cheap for a quality 3 ton ratcheting manual press. Well over a thousand dollars. Remember I need an 11" stroke min. After you do a couple hundred a month push button air/hydraulic is the easy and inexpensive solution.

    Nope, you need to use plenty of cutting oil. We have been using this set up for over 500 broached key ways and we are still using the same cutter shown in this video.

    How do you get the air pressure to be hammer action?

    • @marshalllhiepler
      @marshalllhiepler 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, he did not intentionally design his broach set-up to be "hammer action".
      The pulsing that can be heard, and seen (if you pay close attention) is due to the air compressor. It is a reciprocating compressor (sounds like a single cylinder model). As he opens the air valve to the press-cylinder, the pressure drops in the compressor tank, and the auto-pressure switch starts the compressor to make up for the lost volume. Since the compressor is generating air pulses as the press cylinder is driving the broach forward, the air pulses are affecting the pressure delivery to the cylinder, and a slight "hammering" can be observed. The compressor completes its cycle at 7:03 and the pressure switch shuts it down. The hissing noise that can be heard at shut-down, is the switch venting the "head pressure" so that the next cycle's start-up will not have to overcome the residual pressure, thus easing the start-up load on the electric motor and reducing wear and tear on the motor's start-up capacitors.

      @recrdholdr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way an air over hydraulic system works is it uses an air operated piston pump to make the hydraulic pressure. it's just the action of the pump you are seeing. Every one of these will act in the same way.

    No, but the traditional way to Broach is with an Arbor press which is really cheap and is probably quicker in the long run.

  • @mcadamdavid1

    Your idea is good. Try making a cheap electric Ram slotter { A GATE CLOSER }ect off ebay on 12v Dc adapter. The ram needs to 150kilo newton pounds force {160-250 great} for about 60 dollar, adapter about 10 Dollar. You place a foot end in ram holding the Broach. You could use your Spring return Or you could just use the remote supplied forwards/back wards so theres not much to move about for.
    Let the broach fall onto a pad under the work.
    This will allow the riser blocks to be fitted to the broach guide before the next ram pass.
    Also a attachment Jig/Holder could be fitted to the tool post and same done there.
