Old Finnish way is to layer the bottom of the boot with couple of layers of newspaper and switch them with dry ones couple of/a few times a day. The newspaper absorbs the sweat from the feet ergo making the foot dry. I've been the newspaper method for years now. Can recommend. Haven't heard about this plastic bag method yet.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this oft-overlooked subject, Erik. The vapor barrier is essential in the conditions in which you filmed this post, and you've probably saved many winter hikers with less experience from a lot of misery. Your observation regarding the silence of the snow is spot-on. The silence out there in the wild places is why we go there, and in the dead of winter in a dead-still snow-covered landscape one certainly can hear it. I've always been dismayed, after hiking for a day or two into the wilderness, to hear commercial airliners overhead. But where you are seems to be outside of the airline industry highways. You choose your locations well! Cheers.

The best thing to help keep feet warm is to reduce sweating. My feet sweat profusely so before a cold weather hike I spray my feet with a antiperspirant and it works wonderful to help prevent your socks and shoes from getting soaked.

The foot bag is made by Helsport, in case people were wondering.
Personally, in addition to what Erik uses, it's important to go up min. 2 sizes. You have to be able to wiggle your toes, with the extra wool socks.

I always struggle with this, ill go up in size but at that point my boots and feet feel big and heavy and it becomes a huge compromise, the hike becomes a struggle and it kills my enjoyment. You’re definitely not wrong, its just a battle I’m always trying to handle

I've been using sealskin waterproof socks as a vapor barrier for 3-4 years now. They acts as an inter sock and vapor barrier. I usually carry 2 pairs on multi day trips. Whichever pair is not being worn stays in a dry bag against my body. This way I always have a dry pair.

  • @bengt_axle

My favorite tip is to use wool insoles, socks and avoid goretex or waterproof linings. I like leather boots with a large toe box. The leather breathes and keeps your feet drier than Goretex boots. In temperatures below 0C, you don't need waterproofing and it traps moisture (even though it is supposed to be breathable). I always choose wool and breathable materials for winter, and avoid waterproof materials. Of course, I do not camp outdoors, so it maybe different for winter camping.
I wonder if wearing a waterproof sock inside out would achieve the same result as using a plastic bag.

These footbags must be exellent when digging snow to prepare a place to put up the tent or to make a fire, digging snow at least for me means getting a lot of snow all over that will melt on boots and clothes. A problem with wet boots exept from being less insulating is that they will freeze inside the tent during nighttime unless you take them in to the sleeping bag wich could be quite uncomfortable. Your way, using plastic bag between socks sounds very good, will test it.

Good solid advice in an appropriate setting. The tree roots from the fallen tree would make a great warmth reflector for the fire:-) I would also add how important it is to keep the legs warm so that the blood is not cooled on its way from the core to the feet. The long footbags are great for that. My experience is that once that blood is cold you mostly need an external heat source to warm it up ;-) I always wear an extra base layer and carry a light pair of insulated overtrousers for stops in -10C and below :-) Great video. Looking forward to the next one :-)

I use this method all the time here in rainy Oregon USA. Another tip - cut shoe shaped soles out of shiny reflective car windshield shades and put them into your boots. Adds another layer of insulation and feels cushy, too. Also, women's knee high nylons work well as a super thin insulating layer under any sock if it's not quite cold enough for long underwear or wool leg warmers (I cut off the toes of a pair of soft, much too big wool socks and pull them up over my calves). I guess that's three more tips to add to your most excellent first tip! Love the video, as always.

Hi Erik, we love your videos. A trick I use to keep feet dry is to clean them carefully, then apply MItchum antiperspirant liberally, air dry that then put on the boots. That works for me as it keeps the perspiration down to a minimum. The bag trick works well too, but I find it less stable for hiking on steep terrain. Stopping to rewash and reapply during the day is not a bad idea either. Good luck.
